Can Taking Fish Oil Supplements Reduce Asthma Symptoms?

by Symptom Advice on December 11, 2010

Research has clearly shown that most of us are deficient in our intake of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids, and in particular DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) found in fish oil. And that this is bad for our health. but can you use more Omega 3 for asthma reduction?

There have been a number of studies conducted on the possibility of an Omega 3 asthma link. the studies have been mixed. one for example has concluded that women who increase their intake of Omega 3 essential fatty acids during late pregnancy reduce the risk that their children will contract asthma later in life.

Another study has found that the use of Omega 3 essential fatty acid supplements can help reduce exercise induced asthma.

But not all studies are showing a clear fish oil asthma link.

It is well known that the Omega 3 essential fatty acids have strong anti-inflammatory properties. As asthma has an inflammatory basis it would seem to make sense that if Omega 3 essential fatty acids reduce inflammation this may well help reduce asthma symptoms.

But the fact that it makes sense is not proof that it works. not all studies have found an asthma fish oil link.

If you suffer from asthma then of course you should always consult your doctor. however it may well also be worthwhile undertaking a regime of Omega 3 supplementation for a period of time to see how, or if, taking more Omega 3 for asthma relief works for you.

And like many of these things it may well be that Omega 3 supplementation may well help reduce asthma symptoms for some sufferers and not for others. Trying it for yourself may well be the only way to find out how it works for your asthma.

Whether or not using fish oil capsules for asthma relief works for you there is little doubt that increasing your intake of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids has a wide range of other health benefits, including reducing the risk of death from heart attack.

And this has to be good regardless.

And for these reasons almost all of us, except perhaps those whose diet includes a large amount of fish, can attract some important health benefits by Omega 3 supplementation. whether this extends to reducing asthma symptoms remains to be seen.

Note however that you should be careful in your choice of fish oil capsules.
