Stallergenes S.a (Euronext Paris CAC small)(Paris:GENP) today announced results of a clinical study (VO67.10) of its house dust mites sublingual immunotherapy tablet, conducted in an Environmental Exposure Chamber (EEC).

Study VO67.10, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose ranging trial, evaluated the efficacy and safety of 6 months of treatment with 100 IR, 300 IR, 500 IR house dust mites sublingual immunotherapy tablets in 355 adults with house dust mites related allergic rhinitis.

the study met its primary objective. a clear dose effect was observed across the three active doses, with considerable reduction in allergic rhinitis symptoms observed for the 2 higher doses. the primary efficacy analysis demonstrated that, compared to placebo, treatment with the 500 IR dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in allergic rhinitis symptoms. Secondary efficacy analyses are ongoing.

Adults aged 18 to 55 years with a history of house dust mites-associated allergic rhinitis, documented allergen-specific IgE antibodies, and symptoms during the baseline challenge to mites in the exposure unit were eligible for participation.

SALT LAKE CITY — Cedar, oak, birch, cottonwood.

They’re a big part of the local landscape, but they’re also causing Utahns a lot of trouble lately.

“We had a relatively warm winter and what might be perceived as an early or mild spring and this has promoted very high pollen counts,” said Dr. Charles Rogers, a board-certified allergist with Allergy Associates of Utah and Intermountain Medical Center. Rogers works out of two offices and definitely keeps busy this time of year.

Pollen counts for a variety of trees are already way above average, “extra high,” according to Intermountain Allergy and Asthma, which produces daily measures of what’s in the air in the Salt Lake Valley.

“This year is the same or worse than other years,” Rogers said. “But it has come on somewhat earlier.”

Tree pollens are typically bad from March through June, grass pollens pick up in late April and are prevalent through July, and weed season is worst from July to October. this year, many trees have been pollinating since February.

“These things have a tremendous negative impact on quality of life,” said Dr. Craig Moffat, a board-certifed allergist at Alta View Hospital and the Intermountain Sandy Clinic. He said allergies have a tendency to interfere with school, work and daily life, often leading to decreased productivity and absenteeism.

“The best treatment is to change your parents or change your genes,” Moffat joked. “But since we can’t do that, there’s actually really good therapy available.”

Allergies, he said, are inherited from a person’s parents. if one parent has allergies, children have a 33 percent chance of also having allergies. The percentage increases to 66 percent when both parents suffer from allergies. Moffat’s family history (he has one parent with allergies) actually helped him determine his own career path, as he wanted to help others find relief.

Children aren’t typically affected by seasonal allergies until age 5, and Moffat said symptoms continue to get worse through a person’s 20s and 30s, when they peak and eventually fade away at age 70 or 80.

Both doctors said initial appointments with an allergist or a primary care physician involve recording a patients’ history and examining symptoms.

Typical symptoms for seasonal allergies, Moffat said, include red, itchy, watery eyes and runny nose, sneezing and itchiness.

When the weather warms up, it’s hard to tell what is causing your sneezing, coughing and runny nose symptoms. The question is – when you sneeze, are you suffering from allergies, or experiencing the symptoms of a cold or the flu?

What not to do if you have seasonal allergies:

1. A life without wheat

Local businesses respond to gluten-free movement

Express graphic by Kristen Kaiser Many popular food items contain wheat or traces of wheat. Such products are enjoyed by millions of Americans every day but more and more are trying wheat-free diets to boost their health.

Imagine cutting wheat out of the everyday American diet. no burgers, pizza, beer, flour tortillas or even an all-American peanut butter and jelly sandwich. all of these items contain gluten, a wheat protein that for some people has been linked to symptoms such as stomach cramping, fatigue, bloating, weight gain and depression.

as a result, people across the nation, including celebrities such as Gwenyth Paltrow, Keith Olbermann and Chelsea Clinton, have chosen to live a gluten-free lifestyle, and local business owners say the valley’s demand for gluten-free products has risen as well.

"People have been eating wheat because it’s easy to grow and can be grown in a lot of different climates, but I don’t know that it’s naturally good for us," said Colleen Teevin, owner of the Cloverstone Gluten-Free Bakery in Hailey.

Teevin herself discovered her gluten sensitivity nearly 10 years ago, when she started suffering from vertigo, "fuzzy brain" and exhaustion, common symptoms of gluten sensitivity. she said she cut all gluten out of her diet and felt better within a week.

Teevin’s story is not unusual. according to the National Celiac Sprue Association, an organization dedicated to helping those with intolerance to gluten, nearly one in 133 people have celiac sprue, a disease in which gluten triggers an autoimmune reaction that causes the body to damage its own small intestine.

Nearly one in 20 people have a form of gluten sensitivity, which is less severe but can still cause uncomfortable symptoms in those with the condition.

Teevin said her diagnosis hit her especially hard, as she was a professional baker and couldn’t even touch the wheat flour at her old job without experiencing symptoms.

"I knew if I was ever going to bake again, I would have to go gluten-free," she said.

since January, she’s offered her muffins, cookies and other baked goods in local stores and coffeehouses. her goal, she said, is to make gluten-free products that people aren’t afraid to try.

"In the past, gluten-free has meant taste-free," she said. "There’s still some apprehension, but the more well-made products that are available, the more people will be willing to try it."

Pam Colesworthy, owner of Tranquility Tea House in Ketchum, said she began selling gluten-free items because she has friends who struggle with celiac disease.

"I knew that for them, baked goods are a challenge, and even meals can be a challenge," she said.

Colesworthy admitted that with the myriad of celebrities pushing the gluten-free lifestyle, she thought it was just another trendy diet—like the Atkins diet or the grapefruit diet of yore.

"In the beginning I thought it was somewhat faddish," she said. "Now, I believe it’s a legitimately growing market. Mass-produced wheat today is a different grain than the grain of 100 years ago. I don’t know that our bodies can really tolerate it."

A feature in the Wall Street Journal last year corroborates Colesworthy’s statement. Joseph A. Murray, a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., told the Journal that agricultural changes to wheat, including specialized breeding and genetic modification, have boosted the protein content of wheat. as a result, people as old as 70 who have eaten gluten all their lives have suddenly developed intolerances or even celiac disease.

Jim Funk, owner of Despo’s Mexican restaurant in Ketchum, said he’s seen an increase in demand for gluten-free items over the years that he’s been in business. Funk said roughly 95 percent of his menu items can be made gluten-free with few, if any, modifications.

"A lot of people ask, and when it’s pointed out, they realize that a lot of it is safe for them to consume," he said.

Funk said most of his customers who ask for gluten-free items do have an allergy or sensitivity, but Atkinsons’ Markets co-owner Chip Atkinson said he’s seen growth in non-sensitive purchasers of gluten-free items.

"you have the true customer who literally has issues, whatever disease that they have, that they are diagnosed," he said. "but there’s definitely a segment that is in an experimental stage. they read it’s good for you, and they experiment with it."

That experimentation has been partly responsible for an explosion of gluten-free items, with more than 27,000 food and beverage products launched with the gluten-free claim between 2006 and 2010, according to the Mintel Global new Products Database.

one of the dangers of experimenting with a gluten-free diet without a diagnosis, however, is the potential for covering up a serious medical condition.

Becky McCarver, nutritionist with St. Luke’s Wood River, said undiagnosed celiac sprue patients who follow a gluten-free diet could think they are solving the problem when really other issues may still exist. the American Dietic Association reported in 2010 that those with undiagnosed celiac disease are still at risk for thyroid disease, irritable bowel syndrome and fertility issues.

In addition, those without celiac disease who go on a gluten-free diet may find it harder to lose weight and may develop nutritional deficiencies.

Despite these caveats, locals say the demand for gluten-free food items could be here to stay.

"is it like the cupcake fad [of a few years ago]?" Teevin said. "I don’t think so. People are realizing they feel better when they eliminate certain grains from their diet."

We’ve barely worn our hats and gloves, let alone our puffy down coats. We’re saving money by turning down the thermostats, enjoying long walks in the unseasonable warmth with our families, basking in the unexpectedly balmy temperatures. our snow shovels and giant bags of salt and sand stand at the ready, but have been sadly neglected. All of these are wonderful, welcome effects of this year’s unusually mild winter.

Personally, I’ve been thrilled not to be freezing my you-know-what off out there, shoveling snow off my walk and digging out my car. (Remember last year’s endless blizzards?) And I’ve even managed to escape (so far, at least) catching my usual winter cold. But from a health perspective, there’s actually a downside to all of those remarkably unfrosty winter days: Allergies. (Sniff-sniff!)

Allergy season across the U.S. is starting earlier this year, and it’s likely going to last longer, too, MSNBC reports. And if you — like me — don’t usually get seasonal allergies, well, don’t get too smug! The milder winter means a longer growing season, which means more pollen in the air, which means it might affect people who don’t usually find themselves sneezy and itchy and wheezy in the springtime. Ugh … then again, even if I do get a few allergic symptoms (and suddenly my throat is feeling a little scratchy), I still think, in the end, it’s totally worth it. After all, just think how much healthier we are for not staying huddled inside all winter long! Whoo-hoo! Ah-choo! And pass the tissues, please. Do you think allergies are a fair price to pay for a mild winter?

While studying abroad in England in 2001, I was introduced to Celiac Disease. I tried out the gluten-free diet, but was unsuccessful. in 2002, without knowing about my previous attempt at eliminating gluten from my diet, I was encouraged by a nutritionist to try out a gluten free diet. after keeping a food journal for a month, she noticed that my stomach problems and emergency room visits increased the more I consumed foods containing gluten. with the help of my nutritionist, I cut gluten out of my diet for 4 weeks and at the end of that 4 weeks, I was amazed. My itchy rash had gone away and I didn’t get get sick after every meal. It was at that moment that I began researching celiac disease and the gluten-free diet. after almost 6 years of research and analysis of celiac disease & the gluten-free diet, I have opened a gluten-free store, “Gluten Free Specialty Market” in Downtown Sacramento, California. the goal is to provide both gluten-free products and gluten-free resources to the local community. with both a BA and AM degree in Psychology, my goal is to provide information about both the physical and psychological effects of celiac disease and gluten sensitivities.

(CBS) the death of a 7-year-old girl at school from a peanut allergy has raised questions about a school’s responsibility in treating kids with food allergies.

Two days ago, Ammaria Johnson died after suffering an allergic reaction at Hopkins Elementary School in Chesterfield Country, Va., WTVR CBS 6 in Richmond reported. the death is still being investigated, but Johnson’s mother told WTVR she learned from the school principal and a doctor that the allergy was to a peanut product.

Emergency crews were called to the school on Monday, but by the time they arrived, the child was in cardiac arrest, according to a Chesterfield fire Department spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore. Johnson was pronounced dead a short time later at CJW Medical Center in Richmond.

Food allergies affect an estimated 6 to 8 percent of children under age 5, and about 3 to 4 percent of adults, according to the Mayo Clinic. Food allergies can cause a number of symptoms, ranging from digestive problems and hives to a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis.

How did the school respond? County school and health officials could not discuss Johnson’s death directly, although they said it is the responsibility of the parent to provide medicine and instructions to doctors for kids with allergies.

“For any medication, the school would have to be in possession of that medication to provide it,” Shawn Smith, a spokesman for Chesterfield County Public Schools, told ABC News. “The medication we receive, or should receive, has to be specific to that child, whether it’s over-the-counter or prescription.” 

The girl’s mom, Laura Pendleton, told WTVR she authorized an allergy action plan to give her daughter Benadryl in case of an allergic reaction, but the school didn’t give the girl the medication. Pendleton said she had tried to give an aid an EpiPen for emergencies, but was told to keep it at home. An EpiPen is available with prescription and gives a dose of epinephrine that reverses symptoms of an allergic reaction for enough time to get the person to a hospital.

The girl’s tragic case raises the question: should schools stockpile EpiPens to treat kids in the event of an allergic reaction?

Maria Acebal, head of the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, told CNN that Ammaria’s death “underscores the need for all teachers to have the basics of food allergy safety as part of their orientation and continuing education.”

Acebal told ABC she’s supporting a bill that would let all schools give EpiPens to any student, regardless of if they have a prescription.

“No one in this country has ever been sued for giving epinephrine, to my knowledge,” Acebal told ABC. “All the lawsuits come about because school officials don’t give it when it’s needed.”

FOOD ALLERGIES: THE HIDDEN CULPRIT

You may have food allergies and not even know it ! That’s because the typical symptoms that people identify as related to allergies–watery, itchy eyes, or sinus congestion, or a rash- are just the tip of the iceberg. Because there are many more effects that are not as commonly recognized as related to allergies, many people don’t get the help that they need.

 A very important point about food allergies is that the symptom onset may be delayed , making the allergy even more difficult for the doctor to detect. Let’s take the case of  migraine headaches which may be triggered by food sensitivities. the person who suffers from them has never noticed that the headache occurs after any particular type of food is ingested. That’s because the onset of the headache may not necessarily start shortly after the food is ingested. the headache may not even occur on the same day, but may arise the day after.

Other symptoms which may be related to food allergies include anxiety, irritability, , asthma,  joint pain, and irritable bowel.  many times  a variety of medical specialists may be  consulted looking for  a diagnosis related to that body part   where the person has symptoms.

One person may see a neurologist for recurring headaches, while another sees a gastroenterologist for abdominal cramping and diarrhea. another perosn is a  repeat visitor to the dermatologist’s office because of recurring rashes  These people have  very different symptoms which have the same cause-food sensitivities.  Consider yet another scenario  which causes something of  a medical mystery. A person feeling very fatigued is tested by their doctor for ailments typically known to cause fatigue- anemia or thyroid problems, for example. the doctor doesn’t find anything wrong and sometimes concludes "it’s all in the patient’s head". what might  never considered is that food sensitivities themselves may manifest in some people as generalized fatigue, and when they have muscular and joint pains  they may suffer form fibromyalgia -chronic fatigue syndrome.

I have had the distinct pleasure of seeing symptoms , some of which have been troublesome for years, relieved when the true underlying cause was discovered and treated. For instance some patients who describe themselves as having a “ sensitive stomach” suffering from abdominal discomfortfor years , find themselves relieved of these symptoms when the offending food sensitivities are identified and avoided. others who see themselves as “headache prone” and assume that stress is responsible, find relief when they know what foods to avoid.

A simple in office testing procedure can be done to properly identify these food sensitivities. It is also important to understand that a program of desensitization can relieve the person of their symptoms so that it is possible to eventually reintroduce the food into the diet without adverse effects.

About KALBITOR® (ecallantide)

KALBITOR is a plasma kallikrein inhibitor indicated for the treatment of acute attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in patients 16 years of age and older. KALBITOR, which was discovered and developed by Dyax, is the first subcutaneous treatment available in the U.S. for treating acute HAE attacks.

Important KALBITOR Safety Information

Anaphylaxis has been reported after administration of KALBITOR. because of the risk of anaphylaxis, KALBITOR should only be administered by a healthcare professional with appropriate medical support to manage anaphylaxis and hereditary angioedema. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the similarity of symptoms between hypersensitivity reactions and hereditary angioedema and patients should be monitored closely. KALBITOR should not be administered to patients with known clinical hypersensitivity to KALBITOR.

As part of product approval, Dyax has implemented a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. the goal of the REMS is to communicate the risk of anaphylaxis and the importance of distinguishing between a hypersensitivity reaction and HAE attack symptoms.

KALBITOR Development HAE Program

the approval of KALBITOR is based on the results of two placebo-controlled Phase 3 clinical studies, known as EDEMA3® and EDEMA4®. Patients having an attack of HAE, at any anatomic location, with at least one moderate or severe symptom, were treated with 30 mg subcutaneous KALBITOR or placebo. because patients could participate in both trials, a total of 143 unique patients participated. there were 64 patients with abdominal attacks, 55 with peripheral attacks, and 24 with laryngeal attacks. In both trials, the effects of KALBITOR were evaluated using the Mean Symptom Complex Severity (MSCS) score and the Treatment Outcome Score (TOS), two HAE-specific patient-reported outcome endpoints developed by Dyax. these measures evaluated the severity of attack symptoms at all anatomical locations (MSCS score) and response to therapy (TOS). In the EDEMA4 trial at 4 hours, patients treated with KALBITOR demonstrated a greater decrease from baseline in the mean MSCS than placebo (-0.8 vs. -0.4; p = 0.010) and a greater mean TOS (53 vs. 8, p = 0.003). In the EDEMA4 trial at 24 hours, patients treated with KALBITOR also demonstrated a greater decrease from baseline in the mean MSCS than placebo (-1.5 vs. -1.1; p = 0.04) and a greater mean TOS (89 vs. 55, p = 0.03). the results in the EDEMA3 trial were consistent with the EDEMA4 trial results.

Potentially serious hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred in patients treated with KALBITOR. In 255 HAE patients treated with intravenous or subcutaneous KALBITOR in clinical studies, 10 patients (3.9%) experienced anaphylaxis. for the subgroup of 187 patients treated with subcutaneous KALBITOR, 5 patients (2.7%) experienced anaphylaxis. Symptoms associated with these reactions have included chest discomfort, flushing, pharyngeal edema, pruritus, rhinorrhea, sneezing, nasal congestion, throat irritation, urticaria, wheezing, and hypotension. these reactions occurred within the first hour after dosing.

the most common adverse reactions occurring in greater-than or equal to 3% of KALBITOR-treated patients and greater than placebo were headache, nausea, diarrhea, pyrexia, injection site reactions, and nasopharyngitis.
