Allergy season has come earlier in some parts of the country, thanks to the unseasonable mild weather.

And, if you haven’t started taking your preventive allergy meds, you may want to get right to it, said Dr. Stanley Fineman, an allergist and president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. “We’re seeing patients who started to have symptoms a month earlier than usual, in early February.”

Last year pollen counts were barely recorded in the first week of February in Atlanta, but this year the first week of February saw numbers above 80 and as high as 250. Pollen counts above 50 are considered high.

Though it’s worse in the South, allergy season is also arriving early in the North.

Why the early sniffles? the warmer winter can cause trees to pollinate earlier. In addition, some studies have shown that pollen season is not only getting earlier, but the pollen is getting more potent.

“With the higher concentration of carbon dioxide in the air, plants seem to produce more potent pollen,” said Fineman, who has a private practice in Atlanta.

Another factor causing more severe allergies is the priming factor.

“People who are exposed early in the season to an allergen, which then goes away and then comes back a week or two later, are primed for a more severe reaction,” Fineman said.

Making things worse for allergy sufferers, a combination of mild weather and rain can lead to an increase in mold spore counts as well.

Many people this time of year may mistake an allergic reaction to a respiratory illness like winter colds and flu.

“Doctors have to consider that these may be allergies, not viruses,” Fineman added.

Allergists recommend that people who know they’re allergic to certain pollens start medication before allergy season starts. that may be too late for the South, but you may be able to get a headstart on allergies in the Northern states, where pollen counts haven’t gotten that high yet.

To monitor pollen levels in your area, go to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology’s pollen count map. Pollen counts can not only help you avoid the outdoors when the count is high, but can help you better determine what types of pollens are triggering your symptoms.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Doctors offices along the Grand Strand are getting busier with people already suffering from seasonal allergies.

From sniffling to sneezing, doctors say the warm weather is making symptoms pop up in those allergic to various types of pollen.

Dr. Joseph Moyer, allergist with the Allergy, Asthma and Sinus Center, attributes many patients problems to trees being tricked into thinking it's spring and spreading their pollen early.

“We started to pick up a lot of tree pollen during the warm days that we had last week. We also noticed more people coming in with symptoms, your typical allergy symptoms,” Moyer said.

“I sneeze, my eyes burn, my nose runs. I get all choked up and my head hurts. It's just a general feeling of yuck,” said Laura Forbes, who has allergies.

Meteorologists say the pollen counts do reflect a high level of allergens in the air, especially over the last few days.

Moyer recommends allergy sufferers try over the counter antihistamines and avoid long periods of outdoor activity.

He says the allergy season is just beginning and it's expected to get worse as more things bloom later in the spring.

“This is just the beginning I'm afraid. the cooler weather may slow things down a little bit, but I think the trend is gonna be that the weather is warming up,” he said.

If medicines and avoidance don't work Moyer says it's time to see a doctor.

“My lungs just don’t hurt every day like they have been,”Pauline Buehner said before taking her spot in one of the loungechairs for her 45-minute session. Buehner, 49, of High Ridge, suffers from asthma, allergies and chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease.

It was Buehner’s fourth visit to the St. Louis Salt Room, whichopened Dec. 3 in the hip downtown area. about two tons ofmineral-rich Dead Sea salt fills the room, oozing of anti-bacterialand anti-inflammatory properties. Operators of little-researchedsalt rooms say salt boosts immunity and offers relief for a varietyof ailments, including respiratory problems, skin disorders, arthritis and stress; but doctors question the claims.

“There’s no scientific evidence at all that it’s beneficial,”SLUCare allergist Dr. Raymond Slavin said. “It’s not a bad idea, but somebody should study it.”

While several salt rooms operate in Europe and Canada, the St.Louis Salt Room is only the seventh to open in this country, saidowner Clay Juracsik, 42, of Richmond Heights.

“I think this is the most health-giving room in the Midwest,”said Juracsik, who discovered salt therapy this summer whileresearching natural remedies for his daughter’s asthma. Sessionsare available for parents and children, who play with toys as ifthe chamber is a 14-by-11-foot white sandbox.

Salt therapy, known has halotherapy or speleotherapy, was bornin the mid-1800s after it was discovered that people who worked inthe salt mines of Poland had remarkably low rates of respiratoryillnesses.
Salt rooms are different from salt caves, in that besides beingfilled with salt, they also use a “halogenerator” to reach thedeepest parts of the lungs and skin. the machine heats, spins andgrinds salt into very small particles before blowing them into theair. the dry vapor is filled with negative salt ions, consideredthe key to the room’s healing powers.

Once in our blood, they increase mood chemicals and theflow of oxygen to the brain, boosting energy and relieving stress.Columbia University researchers have found that negative iongenerators work as well as medication for people who get depressedin the winter.

“Those publications are almost all in Russian and really notvery high-quality, controlled trials,” said Dr. Mario Castro, apulmonologist and professor at Washington University School ofMedicine. “At this point, there really is not strong evidence tosuggest that it is helpful.”
