“It is a very devastating disease,” said Dr. George Winny, psychiatrist and medical director of Winter Haven Hospital Center for Behavioral Health. “It is horrible for people to go through.”

Nurses at Regency Center for Women and Infants, where WHH has its childbirth unit, do depression screening with female patients who are there to give birth.

“If the score is high, they call us for ?consulting,” Winny said. “I have seen many cases of postpartum depression over the years.”

Postpartum depression and a much rarer condition, postpartum psychosis, came to Polk County residents’ attention this month with the death of 1-year-old Ishan Patel of Lakeland.

He drowned and had blunt force trauma on his face, according to autopsy results.

His mother, Neha Patel, 32, is charged with first-degree murder. Authorities said she suffered severe postpartum depression and had threatened suicide in the past.

Untreated, Winny said, the condition interferes with a mother’s inability to take care of and bond with her baby.

About 10 percent to 15 percent of women develop that condition after giving birth, said Dr. Latamia White-Green, a psychiatrist at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

Such women aren’t able to take care of themselves or their babies, leading to feelings of being worthless, irritability, agitation and exhaustion beyond the normal stress of having a newborn. They need treatment by a doctor, White-Green said.

“The stress of caring for a newborn can take a toll,” Winny said. “You may feel overwhelmed and anxious about your ability to take care of the baby.”

In a small number of cases — fewer than 5 of every 1,000 births — the mother’s mental condition goes beyond postpartum depression into postpartum psychosis. Symptoms can include trying to hurt herself or the baby, seeing things that aren’t there, feeling confused and having rapid mood swings.

The difficulty for families and friends, as well as the mother, is determining when feelings are normal baby blues or something more serious.

Anywhere from 55 percent to 85 percent of women are likely to have some short-term baby blues, more accurately called an adjustment disorder, White-Green said.

Mood swings, crying, feeling sad or overwhelmed and other emotional reactions can occur during that period as the body goes through hormonal adjustments, she and Winny agreed.

If women or their family members feel the depression goes beyond baby blues, particularly if it interferes with the mother-child relationship, both psychiatrists advise them to call their doctors before the scheduled six-week check-up.

Too often, they’re reluctant to do that, said Teresa even, mental health therapist with Peace River Center.

“People feel they should be able to control it,” she said. “I spend a lot of time doing education on brain chemicals (and mental disorders).”

Teenage mothers are at greater risk of postpartum depression, as are mothers whose babies are born prematurely or with developmental problems.

In the case of Ishan Patel, the Lakeland baby killed, he was premature and spent months at Tampa General Hospital.

Other mothers at greater risk are those whose pregnancies are unplanned, who lack an adequate support system or who already have depression.

Cultural factors also can play a role.

“In India, women are not very vocal in talking about their feelings,” said Winny, a native of India who practiced there before coming to the United States.

“We used to see a lot of anxiety disorders,” he said, but added that in India there is likely to be more family support.

“Your mother or mother-in-law might help take care of your baby there,” he said. “Here you are living with your husband and child.”

White-Green, who is African-American, said her cultural experience is that “it’s really frowned upon to be out of the house until three or four weeks after the birth.”

Isolation can increase symptoms of depression, she said, encouraging women to ask for help with child care or housework and find ways to take care of themselves. Something as simple as a hairdo or manicure may help improve mood.

Winny offers this advice for significant others of any culture to follow in the days and weeks after a child is born:

“Listen to her without judging her or offering solutions, without trying to fix things. Simply be there.”

Volunteer to help with childcare and housework without waiting for her to ask, he said. Encourage her to exercise.

I should get my period March 14th but im having alot of early pregnancy symptoms like fatigue mood swings and i have to pee alot, what are some other symptoms and could i be pregnant?

Symptoms that early could just be your period coming. most women don't have symptoms until they actually miss their period. I mean you could have symptoms but they are not a good way to tell you fi your pregnant or not. I didn't start having any symptoms other than a missed period until I was about 6 or 7 weeks along as in 2-3 weeks after I missed my period.

Changes in appetite, nausea, changes in your skin (like more oil/shone), hair and/or nails growing faster than usual, and intuition. Have five, and the signals can change from person to person and pregnancy to pregnancy. until you know, act as though you are pregnant, and avoid any medications, hair dye, or anything else you would avoid if you were sure.

Some other early pregnancy symptoms are morning sickness, tender and swollen breasts, sensitivity to smell, constipation.

Every woman is different but there can be soreness in your breasts, very hungry (different feeling than normal) or nausea.

I was 4 years old when I saw my grandma in her bed and she was white as a ghost and puffy looking and skinny at the same time. she opted NOT to use chemo and back then it was much worse effects. but that's the symptoms. The moment I feel anything weird, I am on phone to my gastro doctor, but lately as my symtoms increase, he isn't taking my calls seriously and I think it's because he's been my gastro doc for 20 years now and maybe we are just too close, and I should find another younger gastro doc so that he won't ignore my symtoms and wave them away as I.B.S. It's more than that sometimes…. So if you feel any symptoms, try and connect with a good gastro doc like I did… but don't get so close to him that he secretly doesn't want you to be sick and explains stuff away…

What were your symptoms?

I was one of the lucky ones who only experienced morning sickness from about week 14-15, and it was only a couple of times. Other than around week 7 or so, which I didn't know I was pregnant yet, I started noticing a change in my appetite and bathroom usage. I had to pee all the time, even 20 mintues after I had just used the bathroom. I started craving snack type foods a lot and felt like I needed to eat all the time. I found out around week 9 that I was pregnant.

I have GAD and my weight has been going up and down daily,also my appetite is off. When i eat my appetite is good,but i am not that hungry in general. I know anxiety can lots of symptoms are these also symptoms of anxiety?

Appetite and weight issues go along with emotional distress in general, as well as in cases of disorders of mood regulation (such as GAD) I know when I'm feeling my anxiety going my stomach is in knots! so I feel for ya.

Though if your weight is fluctuating drastically on a daily basis (like more than a pound or two) that might be something to talk with your doctor about.

I have a blue heeler, who we have purchased a 3 way immunization shot for, including parvo. we were ready to give the dog the shot, but the dog developed symptoms of parvo, so we're holding off on the shot. The pup is 6 months, and has found a way to sneak out of the yard and came in contact with some ruddy looking dogs that are chained in a neighbors yard. He lost his appetite (usually ravenous), wouldn't touch water, wouldn't eat, lethargic, stool was bloody, slimy, and smelled terrible, and puked up a frothy looking white and orange mess.

So not being able to afford a trip to the vet for intravenous fluids, we got him some electrolytes that are usually given to horses (very concentrated), and some terramycin (antibiotic to prevent blood infection). Shortly after squirting 35 ml of that solution into his mouth he started eating, and even drank about 16 oz of water. He seems more energetic now, and I'm doubting if it was even parvo, anyone have another ideas?

You need to keep that treatment up for at least a week so he doesn't relapse.

u really need to get that dog to the vet now. most vets will allow u to set up a payment plan if u dont have the money to pay for the visit. so just call ur vet and ask him if this would be ok. he really needs some vet care

You really should take this puppy to a vet asap. The breeder should have started parvo shots before he ever left.

You need to get that dog to a vet, have him tested for parvo, and if it is not parvo, get him the immunizations.

You also need to make sure he is safe and not running free.

Al-Fajar Foundation arranges blood for more than 200 patients.

Umar Tariq, a father of three children with thalassaemia shared his views, “Today finding one blood bag is not possible, I salute the administration and staff of Al-Fajar who regularly finds blood for more than 200 registered patients.”

A large number of parents of thalassaemia patients, civil society persons and local elders attended the event that was organised by Al-Fajar Foundation, the only hospital in Malakand Division.

The rate of thalassaemia incidence is alarmingly high in Malakand Division as compared to other parts of the country.

Briefing the audience about thalassaemia, Sar Zamin Khan, an expert of the disease explained that the disease is caused by genes inherited from the biological parents. it can develop if only one parent has abnormal genes.

About the symptoms of the disease he said, “Symptoms most often begin within 3-6 months of birth and include anemia, jaundice, enlarged spleen, fatigue, lethargy, reduced appetite, enlarged and fragile bones, growth problems, increased susceptibility to infection, pale skin, hormone problems, heart failure, shortness of breath, liver problems and gallstones.”

Diagnosis and treatment were also discussed, but the expert stressed that prevention of the diseases is only possible if blood tests are carried out before marriage.

Maulana Sadiq Ahmad who runs a maddrassa, said, “The 200 students of my madrassa are regular donors with Al-Fajar Foundation. We not only feel special but it is our duty to save lives of the young generation of our country. Whenever the hospital needs blood we welcome them.”

Some of the audience could not control their tears when thalassaemic children appeared on the stage and expressed their resolve to fight the disease.

There are more than 7,000 patients of the fatal disease, which is increasing at an alarming rate, but there is no single government hospital, only philanthropic organisations have taken the responsibility. “It is the duty of the state to provide facilities to the patients, but unfortunately no such platform exists,” said Khalid Mahmood, an elder of the Pakhtunkhwa Mili Awami Party.

Bushra, a young girl carrying the disease, thanked Al-Fajar Foundation for taking care of her, calling it the best hospital in the world.

“This is the only hospital which provides blood transfusion free of cost in the country,” said Rahimullah, the father of a patient.

APP adds from Mirpur: World Thalassaemia Day was also observed in Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) on Sunday with renewal of the pledge to utilise maximum efforts to save the patients of thalassaemia by ensuring regular transfusion of blood and other required treatment.

Special ceremonies were held in the public sector hospitals in various parts of AJK to observe the day while a ceremony followed by a walk entitled Umeed-e-Kiren Walk starting at the Thalassaemia Treatment Centre located in DHQ Hospital under the auspices of Al-Shifa Blood Bank, Mirpur.

Speakers at the walk said the first modern Thalassaemia Treatment Centre in AJK is here at DHQ hospital.

They recalled that the centre was set up in collaboration with philanthropists engaged in serving the community.
