Ferndown granddad recovers from ‘silent killer’ of prostate cancer

IT’S known as the silent killer.

So when granddad William Watson, from Ferndown, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, his family were understandably worried.

the retired machine tool worker, now 73, had had no symptoms when doctors picked up the disease back in September 2005.

currently in remission, Mr Watson still remembers the shock of those first scary days.

the dad of three, who was being treated for a skin problem at the time, said: “I didn’t know I had anything wrong with me.

“It was a complete shock.”

he was immediately put on a course of hormone injections, before starting 30 days of radiotherapy.

“My wife June was wonderful,” Mr Watson said. “She used to come to every appointment with me.

“The radiotherapy doesn’t bother you too much in the beginning, but after three weeks it’s not very pleasant at all.”

After more hormone treatment, the cancer was in remission. he still needs to go for six-monthly blood tests to check it’s kept at bay.

Daughter Lisa Goddard is shocked by statistics that although 37,000 men in the UK are diagnosed every year, nine out of 10 adults don’t know what a prostate gland is.

Wimborne resident Lisa, 38, said: “Up until he retired he’d never missed a day’s work, was very fit and well and played golf four times a week.

“Although you hear it’s a common cancer, you never expect anyone close to you to get it.

“I now believe every man over 40 should be checked, because if it’s caughtearly enough it can be cured. I just feel like compared to breast cancer awareness it is not really out there.”

Mrs Goddard, who works at Bournemouth and Poole College, is holding a Viva Las Vegas men’s charity night at AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, February 25, to raise ‘as much as possible’ for the Prostate Cancer Charity.

Keep an eye out for symptoms

MOST prostate cancer is slow growing to start with and may never cause any symptoms or problems.

however, some men will have cancer that is more aggressive or ‘high risk’, and needs treatment to help prevent or delay it spreading outside the prostate gland. If a man does have symptoms, such as problems passing urine, they may be mild and happen over many years.

I have dizziness whenever I stand from sitting or just rapid change of height in general, also I have fatigue with the dizziness. my blood pressure however is normal.
Does anyon know why this could be??

I am not a doctor, but it sounds like it might be anemia, or low iron in the blood. The only way to know for sure is to make an appointment.

How long does it last?…secs, minutes, hours?
Do you vomit with the dizziness?
are you on any medication? e.g blood pressure tablets.
Any problems with your hearing during an attack?
Any fullness in the ears during an attack?

I think I may have developed a uterine fibroid(s). I'm having mucus and bleeding discharge while I'm taking progesterone, and I've read they are about the only "female" issue that gets worse with progesterone exposure instead of better. also, my mom had one of the worst cases they'd ever seen when they were doing an autopsy on her over a year ago, and I've read they are genetic. does anyone want to share how their symptoms presented? I do have a doc appointment on Thursday.

I think I am having a nervous breakdown what are the symptoms I am so unhappy and dont know what to do . I already take a medicine called lexapro but i do not think it is helping my depression at all i cry all day ……

Call the doctor who prescribed that, and let them know how you feel!!!!

How long have you been on your medication? Sometimes it can take a month for medication to build up to the correct levels in your bloodstream. Don't give up though! Call your doctor and see if there is something else that you can take (still while taking the other medication) until the other medication is built up in your system. Sometimes you can take herbal supplements that help too, but you have to ask your doctor first so there aren't any complications. I'm in the same boat right now so I know what you are going through. I'm making an appointment tomorrow as well! Hang in there…you aren't alone even if it seems that way.

Sounds like you might have Anxiety and depression. I suffer from Anxiety but have it controlled by taking Zoloft which seems to help for my anxiety and my light case of depression. But i think you should consult with a doctor and talk about what exactly is going on. Best wishes of luck!

If at any time you feel that badly, then I urge you to admit yourself into a psychiatric hospital for a thorough evaluation. or talk to a mental health professional about all your dealing with. I hope my answer helps. good Luck.

"Nervous breakdown" isn't actually a medical term, it's a secular one. People can snap in many different ways. Depression is just one of them. I mean, last time I had a nervous breakdown, I just vanished and took a road trip for a week.

If Lexapro isn't helping, you may actually be taking too low a dose. If you're a teenager, it may have the opposite effect. definitely check with a doctor to try to tweak your meds until they are what you need.

When Julie Swanson needed a doctor’s advice about shoulder pain last year, she didn’t want to take time during the workday for an office visit.

So the 57-year-old Burnsville resident used an online video connection to talk with a physician through her computer. The doctor reviewed her pain medications and showed her some new stretching exercises, all within a 10-minute visit that cost $45.

“When you think about the time that it takes to go, make an appointment and sit in a doctor’s office – something like this is invaluable,” Swanson said.

It was a similar experience for Shaun Steffen, 45, of Hugo, who turned to an online health service earlier this year when a urinary tract inflection flared up.

After filling out a questionnaire about her symptoms, Steffen received a treatment plan and a prescription that did the trick – all in about four minutes.

“I was really impressed with the speed,” Steffen said. “I definitely would recommend it.”

The testimonials sing the praises of a trend that can be dubbed “online care” or “telehealth” as doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants start to provide medical treatment through the Internet and mobile devices.

The Twin Cities market appears to be an early adopter of online care services, with offerings from Eagan-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and OptumHealth, a division of Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth Group. Forms of online care also come from the medical group at Bloomington-based HealthPartners as well as a St. Paul-based startup company called Zipnosis.

But as health care providers begin to dabble in online care, it’s unclear exactly what form of web medicine will prove the most popular with patients. Swanson and Steffen, for example, used two very different services – one provides a chat with a doctor on a wide range of topics, while the other guarantees a treatment plan from a nurse practitioner for a limited number of problems.

It’s also not clear whether insurers, entrepreneurs or health systems will drive the trend. The St. Louis Park-based Park Nicollet Health system said this month, for example, that after completing a one-year pilot project with Zipnosis, it plans to go in a new direction with online care.

“This is the very beginning stages of this industry,” said Tom Charland, a health care consultant with Merchant Medicine LLC in Shoreview. “The thing you have to remember is the acceptance factor….Not everyone is going to be willing to receive medical care through their home computer.”

MN Community Measurement, a health care quality group in Minneapolis, said that about 13 percent of medical clinics surveyed in the state – 152 out of 1,198 – said they were offering electronic visits in 2010. this year, the number doubled as 334 clinics of 1,313 surveyed – 25 percent of the total – said their clinic or organization offered e-visits.

It’s likely that many of those clinics were providing online care through one of the four prominent services.

“I am not personally aware of any physicians or other professionals who are providing online care independent of (those) large organizations,” wrote Dr. Patricia Lindholm, president of the Minnesota Medical Association, in an email. “It is not likely a profitable line of business in and of itself and liability insurance is one of the costs.”

When it comes to e-visits, Blue Cross got the ball rolling locally in 2009 with a program called Online Care Anywhere, a virtual clinic that initially linked employees of the health insurance company with providers from Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services.

In spring of 2010, the insurance company began making the service available to employees of several large national employers that do business in the Twin Cities, said Sig Muller, the company’s vice president of business development. Then, late last year, Blue Cross opened up the service to anyone in Minnesota.

Now, people who use Online Care Anywhere do so in one of two ways: Either they log on and pay $45, or they have free access because their employer has purchased a subscription that’s independent of the health insurance plan. Muller said the top health complaints handled through the system so far include sinusitis, urinary tract infections and upper respiratory infections. Doctors can offer advice and prescriptions through the system.

The Twin Cities could lead the online care trend nationally, Muller said, much as it did with MinuteClinic, an operator of health clinics that are located in retail stores. MinuteClinic was based in Minneapolis before being acquired by Rhode Island-based CVS Caremark.

“It certainly is never going to completely replace visits to the physician’s office,” said Muller, who would not say how many patients have used online care through Blue Cross. “The intent is really to complement it.”

Blue Cross wasn’t alone in developing the online care model last year.

Zipnosis announced in 2010 its pilot project with Park Nicollet to treat 10 simple medical problems for patients who submit answers to a confidential online interview about their condition. If the responses suggest the patient can be treated through Zipnosis, a clinician then makes a diagnosis and suggests treatment options that can include a prescription. Patients are notified with an e-mail or text message.

In the past year, more than 5,000 patients have used Zipnosis, said Jon Pearce, the company’s chief executive officer. More than 40 percent of those who used the service are Park Nicollet patients, Pearce estimated, but he said the health system’s recent decision to not continue the pilot project is not a setback.

“Having a big provider group behind us gives us a little more velocity in the marketplace,” he said. “But we have plenty of high-quality medical providers that can provide care.”

In addition to Minnesota, Zipnosis now is operating in conjunction with medical clinics in Washington state and Colorado. The company has been backed financially with $600,000 from angel investors and has drawn on former leaders of MinuteClinic for executive talent.

“In the next 10 years, we’ll leapfrog retail care,” Pearce predicted. “There are a lot of macro-economic factors that will give a lot of financial incentives for patients to use online care….They’re becoming much more cost-conscious.”

The Virtuwell service from the medical group at HealthPartners also launched in 2010 and has many similarities to Zipnosis. Patients provide information about their illness through a secure website that’s designed to screen out those who might have more serious health problems.

So far, Virtuwell has handled just more than 7,000 cases. But the system has evaluated another 21,000 cases where it referred patients elsewhere for care – neither Zipnosis nor Virtuwell charges patients in such cases.

About 70 percent of people who’ve used Virtuwell have paid for the service as part of their health insurance, said Kevin Palattao, a company vice president. in those cases, a patient might pay their typical copayment for an office visit or convenience care visit, depending on the health plan.

About 30 percent of users pay the flat $40 fee for Virtuwell, which offers online diagnosis and treatment of about 40 common conditions. as with the other online care services, patients with uncomplicated urinary tract infections – where antibiotics can quickly provide relief – have been frequent users of Virtuwell.

“If you have had a urinary tract infection and you develop symptoms again, most women are spot on – they say, ‘This feels exactly like it did the first time,’ ” said Gwen Verchota, a nurse practitioner with Virtuwell. “I don’t think we’ve had a night when we haven’t treated a urinary tract infection.”

The OptumHealth division of UnitedHealth Group opened its NowClinic online care service to workers at Delta Air Lines in June 2010. That gave Minnesota-based employees of the airline “access to quality care when they’re on a layover in Poughkeepsie,” said Chris Stidman, a vice president with the firm.

Later last year, the company made the service available to all residents of Minnesota regardless of their health plan affiliation. as with the Blue Cross program, patients using NowClinic can ask to talk directly with a physician about any number of health issues, but doctors make the call about whether the consultation can be provided online or should instead involve a face-to-face visit.

Women have been the primary users of the system, Stidman said, especially women with children. The company’s data suggests “about 10 to 12 percent of the care that was delivered in either urgent care centers or emergency rooms could have been delivered in a clinically appropriate way via a telehealth solution,” he said.

Like the Blue Cross service, NowClinic provides a 10-minute visit for $45. whereas the Blue Cross online care program is open for business only during certain hours, NowClinic is always open. Stidman noted, however, that doctors using NowClinic in the middle of the night might respond by phone rather than through a web camera.

Similarities between the Blue Cross and OptumHealth systems aren’t surprising because both companies use a Boston-based information technology company called American well.

Many telehealth visits through the company’s system are for minor illnesses of the sort treated in retail clinics, said Dr. Roy Schoenberg, the co-chief executive officer of American well. But many others are for patients with chronic conditions who need better access to doctors to manage their ongoing health problems, he said.

Health insurance companies have led the charge with online care because they recognize the potential for savings, Schoenberg said. But American well has tried to differentiate itself by focusing on the central role that doctors play in providing care.

“When you ask people what health care means to them, to most of them health care is talking to a doctor,” he said. “That’s fundamentally the health care transaction that most people are carrying out.”

Doctors say they are closely watching how all this plays out.

Lindholm, the president of the Minnesota Medical Association, said her group does not have an official position on online care. But most doctors think e-visits should be provided in the context of a patient’s established relationship with a physician office, which could have better access to medical records.

Lindholm noted that patients might be able to get the same services they find online without a fee by calling their clinic’s nurse line. in some ways, online care is similar to the “telephone care” that doctors have tried to give patients over the years, Lindholm said, but the experience suggests a few cautions.

“We do feel somewhat handicapped and at-risk by not being able to examine the patient,” Lindholm wrote in an email. “Things may sound more serious or less serious than they actually are over the phone and misjudgments are a greater risk.”

i get really bad stomach pains on and off for periods of about a month, but they've never been as bad as they are this time.

i guess the list of symptoms simplified is this:
intense cramping and/or sharp pains in lower left and/or right abdomen (always after eating, sometimes even without eating)
vomiting an average of three times a day, more after eating meat (also, i haven't been able to eat beef for a few years now. it makes me so sick)
constant exhaustion, no matter how much i sleep
headaches, probably from all the pain
near-black diarrhea almost every bowel movement, which are usually once every 2-3 days
6 pounds lost last week, even though i've been eating much more than normal to try to maintain my weight

i have no symptoms of just simply being sick.
i don't have a fever, but i feel feverish. my temperature has been constantly below normal.
might i emphasize how the abdomen pain is constant and intense? it interferes with my daily life.

this has been going on for two or three weeks for this time.
also, i have a doctor's appointment tomorrow.
i just want to have an idea of what's wrong ahead of time.

Your symptoms sound so similar to mine except everytime I go to the dr they say it's acid reflux. I'm constantly in pain not just the lower stomach but in between my rib cage at the top, gas, belching and bad indigestion. There are so many things that could cause your symptoms, you should really see a doctor. Black diarrhea is an indication that there is blood in your GI tract. this is serious. It could mean ulcers or much worse.

Get help immediately.

I've searched this site on lock jaw but I'm not sure if that is the answer to my symptoms. Basically, I noticed yesterday that when I went to eat something I opened my mouth and the top of my jaw gave a sharp pain as if my jaw got dislocated. I was able to close it again and did so really quick. but now every time I open my mouth wide (like if I yawn) it really hurts at the top of my jaw, almost near my ear. I thought it might be an ear infection at first but the pain is definitely in the top of my jaw or at least the bone in front of my ear. I have a doctors appointment on Friday so hopefully will find out more then but to be honest I can't wait that long so if anyone has any clues I'd love to hear them. I hear lockjaw is something to do with getting a cut. I remember about a couple of months ago I stepped on a nail and it went right through my shoe but it didn't pierce my skin or at least I didn't think it did.

The incubation period is around 8-10 days. It starts out with jaw rigidity, followed by difficulty swallowing, stiffness in the neck, and rigidity of pectoral and calf muscles eventually leading to full body spasms. You also get fever, sweating, elevated blood pressure and heart rate. my mother is a doctor and has been for 35 years and she's never even seen a documented case of tetanus. You could have done something to your jaw but it's not tetanus. Especially if you have been vaccinated in the last ten years.

at the time though there was a bout of gastro going around my work so of course I just wrote it off as that. when everyone else started getting better and I didn’t, I had a feeling something was not quite right, next thing I knew I had lost five kilos…then another five… 12 kilos in total bringing me down to a very scary weight! I went to see my GP, she has been fantastic through all this, and she prescribed some blood tests testing for celiac and lactose intolerance and a stool sample. I was absolutely devastated at the time because I had always had such an appetite and such a passion for food, the thought of not being able to eat bread or pasta was terrifying (if only I knew what was to come!). A week or so later after a negative result on the tests, another doctor’s appointment I had lost all ability to get out of bed or stay awake for longer than a few minutes, my G P recommended I have a colonoscopy and an endoscopy so they could figure out what was wrong.

The day of my surgery I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and immediately started on prednisolone. By reading this website, I have been one of the lucky ones, the main side affects I had from this medication were a bit of hair loss and instead of depression there were a few days where I did feel abnormally elated, quite strange given the circumstances!! since then I have been taken off prednisolone and am now on salofalk and imuran (was taking iron supplements too but have since gotten my iron levels back up to a normal range). Overall I am fairly healthy, and in comparison to some of the other stories I have been reading I feel absolutely terrible for feeling sorry for myself and my state, there are others who have this disease far worse than I have at the moment even though my specialist has told me I was one of his worse cases when I first came, my heart goes out to you, it really does.

Being diagnosed with a chronic illness is something which takes a bit of adjusting to, only know that I am better I am starting to realize what this means.

before this I had never taken any over-the-counter painkillers (such as pandol), antibiotics or anything, the sickest I have ever been would have lasted for less than a week before I would be back playing the sports I love. Assuming the sick role has been so difficult for me because I have always felt a sense of pride of how healthy I was, I did everything right, good diet, heaps of exercise, why should this happen to me?? Now when I think of myself I don’t see myself as I used to be, I see my disease. I hate what is happening to me and that I have no way of controlling it and I feel so guilty that only now am I starting to feel this way when everybody has praised me for the last few months on how well I am handling this, I feel like I am letting people down by feeling this way now.

The main reason I stumbled upon this site is that for the last week or so I have had quite severe joint pains, mainly in my back. Reading some other peoples posts, imuran seems to be the most likely cause for this (other than the disease itself), however I have been taking imuran for about 6 months with no previous problems. Truth is I am actually quite worried about my kidneys, as the pain seems to be in the right spot and I have also had a slight fever all week. I have had a blood test done this week, just my usual one which tests for everything under the sun. I really don’t want to go back to the doctor as after visiting him every week I was getting a little sick of him!! and he just told me that as long as my blood tests remain fine I don’t have to come back for 6 months!!

As a psychology student at university, one thing that did particularly bother me about the medical system here in Australia is that I was not referred to see a psychologist or a dietician (I know they say it’s not diet or stress related but realistically…how can it not be) or physiotherapist or any other allied health service. Managing a chronic illness, or any illness, involves a much more multi-disciplinary approach than purely the ‘fix the symptoms’ mentality of the medical profession. I was just wondering if any other countries the multi-faceted approach is utilized more than it is here?

Common Characteristics of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases (venereal diseases) are infections that are contracted through intimate sexual contact. Once established, sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and syphilis can spread and cause extensive, serious physical damage. It is important to make a doctor’s appointment immediately if you suspect that you have contracted–or have been exposed to–such an infection. if it is found that you have been infected, you should abstain from sexual contact until your doctor tells you that you are no longer contagious. you should also inform your sexual partners so that they can be examined and treated also, whether or not they have symptoms.

Although gonorrhea and syphilis are the most serious of the sexually transmitted diseases, there are a number of others that cause considerable discomfort or embarrassment. Venereal warts, for example, can be acutely painful. Pubic lice (crab lice) cause intensive itching.

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection, and an extremely contagious one. An estimated 2.5 million Americans contract this disease annually.

The symptoms of gonorrhea usually appear within one to three weeks after infection. in men, these symptoms include a white to yellow-green penile discharge, burning pain while urinating and deep, aching pain or pressure in the genitals. in women, there may be painful and frequent urination, deep, aching pain in the lower abdomen and, rarely, a vaginal discharge. Pharyngeal gonorrhea (in the mouth and throat) may produce a sore throat; rectal gonorrhea occasionally causes discomfort in the area around the anus and a slight discharge. However, in 10 to 20 percent of men and up to 80 percent of women, there are no perceived symptoms at all.

Untreated, gonorrhea commonly affects the urethra in men, making urination extremely painful and difficult; it may progress to chronic obstruction and infertility. in women, the disease can attack the fallopian tubes and other pelvic organs (pelvic inflammatory disease), causing pain, fever and, very likely, infertility. The risk of infertility increases with each infection: 75 percent of women who have had three infections involving the pelvic organs are infertile. in both sexes, untreated gonorrhea may result in arthritis, or in a generalized bacterial infection affecting the heart and nervous system. if a woman has active gonorrhea at the time of delivery, her baby may develop permanent blindness.

Fortunately, once it is diagnosed, gonorrhea can be treated quickly and effectively with antibiotics.

A diagnosis of gonorrhea can be made by a microscopic examination of the discharge or a cervical smear; or, more reliably, by a culture that takes two days to incubate. The culture should be repeated one week after treatment.

Syphilis is caused by an organism called a spirochete that is spread through sexual contact. About 20,000 cases a year are reported to United States health authorities, but it is highly probable that several thousands more are not reported.

The disease has three stages. First, skin ulcers (chancres), which are usually painless, appear in the genital area. The chancres may erupt anywhere from 10 to 90 days after infection. Men may see them on the penis, but in women they usually form inside the vagina and may easily be missed. these sores heal in a few weeks, leaving little or no scarring. meanwhile, the spirochetes circulate in the bloodstream and, in a few weeks, produce the symptoms of the second stage of the disease: fever, swollen glands and reddish rash. these signs then also disappear, even without treatment, within 10 days to two weeks; the disease becomes latent and, within two years, no longer infectious. the third stage may develop without warning, years later. in this final stage, there is tissue damage in the brain and the nervous system, the heart, liver, bone and skin. in as many as one-third of untreated individuals, this damage may result in death.

If a woman infected with syphilis becomes pregnant, or contracts the disease during pregnancy, there is a high risk that her baby will be stillborn or suffer from severe birth defects.

Syphilis is most accurately diagnosed by a blood test. It can be treated successfully with penicillin or other antibiotics. Periodic tests should be done for two years after treatment to make certain that the disease is cured. As is the case with all sexually transmitted diseases, sexual partners should be informed immediately, and examined and treated.

Venereal warts (condylomata acuminata), cauliflower-like and red, are caused by a virus and are thought to be almost exclusively sexually transmitted. in women, they appear around the vagina and rectum, growing more rapidly where they come in contact with any vaginal discharge and being greatly aggravated by pregnancy. in men, they appear on the penis and rectal area.

A wart-removing compound may be prescribed, although it is not recommended for use during pregnancy since it can be harmful to the fetus. The compound should be used with care and applied only to the surface of the warts. About six hours after application, a sitz bath should be taken to remove any excess. Over-the-counter preparations should never be used; the genital tissues are too sensitive for such products. Occasionally it is necessary to remove venereal warts by electro-cauterization (burning) or by surgery.

Pubic lice (crab lice) are almost always transmitted sexually. The lice, which can be found attached to the pubic hair, are yellow-gray in color, becoming dark after they are engorged with blood.

An infestation of crab lice causes intense itching in the pubic area as a reaction to the parasites’ bites. It can be readily cured with the application of a prescription cream, lotion or shampoo. to prevent re-infestation, the sexual partner(s) should also be treated, and clothes and linens washed.

Sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and syphilis are highly contagious infections. if you are sexually active–other than with a single partner who is also monogamous–you risk exposure to these diseases; the more partners, the greater the risk. Sensible precautions that may be taken include urinating and washing the genitals after intercourse, using condoms and spermicidal vaginal foams, jellies or creams, and being tested frequently for gonorrhea and syphilis if you have several sexual partners–or if your partner does.

If you suspect that you have a sexual infection do not hesitate to tell your partner(s) and to visit your doctor or a clinic immediately. Sexually transmitted diseases can be cured only with prescribed courses of drug therapy.
