People with central auditory processing disorder are unable to locate where sounds are coming from and often have a warping effect when they hear something, unable to exactly pinpoint where it is coming from. this sort of disorder is quite common and one of the more recognised causes of many developmental disorders and dyslexia is one of them. Psychologists who are assessing a child may mistake central auditory processing disorder for something like attention deficit disorder – and this is because they share some symptoms and there could be a misdiagnosis. those afflicted by this will have plenty of trouble to process any sort of information that is verbal in nature and this could lead them to learning difficulties as they would find it very difficult to understand the person speaking to them.

The auditory dyslexic may hear letter or words as jumbled, and may be unable to repeat something that they just heard moments ago. Most people associate dyslexia with reading difficulties. this type of dyslexia is no different, because they cannot hear words as most people hear them, associating written words with sounds that are jumbled makes reading and writingmuch more difficult. Dysphonetic is another word used to describe someone who has auditory processing issues. As the word describes, individuals with this diagnosis have problems with phonetics.

People with auditory neuropathy may get natural hearing, or hearing departure ranging from balmy to serious, they ever have impoverished speech-perception abilities, meaning they have problem agreement address understandably. some patients with auditory neuropathy appear, based on history and initial behavioral testing, to fit into the category of “central auditory processing disorder”. however, evaluation of such patients with physiological measures sensitive to auditory nerve disorders shows a more peripheral site consistent with auditory neuropathy. Sometimes people with auditory neuropathy are subsequently diagnosed with diseases such as charcot marie tooth disease and friedreich’s ataxia. In these cases, auditory neuropathy may be a symptom of the more global effects these diseases rather than an isolated neuropathy of the ear-brain connection.

To ensure that the brain is effective in processing information, it is important that it has the capability to hold specific pieces of data and information and view it as a whole. it must do this by arranging the information into a particular order.

Auditory dyslexia, also known as dysphonetic dyslexia, is a disorder that affects a person’s ability to distinguish individual letter sounds within words. usually there is nothing wrong with the person’s hearing, but the brain is unable to correctly process the sounds it receives. While visual dyslexics can have trouble identifying written letters, auditory dyslexics have the same kind of problems hearing letter sounds.

Upon hearing the term “auditory processing deficit” most people think of someone who does not hear something well. They mistakenly are thinking about the person’s hearing acuity. Auditory processing is what the brain does with sound impulses once these impulses leave the ear. For some, the complicated chain of events in auditory processing presents barriers and is overlooked. this can result in false or inaccurate diagnoses. Sometimes a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is not ADD at all, but is a deficit in attention secondary to an auditory processing deficit. In other words, the auditory processing deficit causes the individual to look like he/she is not paying attention. why, you ask? Imagine you are in a bad cell phone area.

You may go through most of your life without needing an audiologist, but if you discover you’re having problems with your hearing, seeing an audiologist can change your life dramatically for the better. many people assume that if they should be seeing an audiologist, their doctor will suggest it and set up a referral.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 15, 2006

In her new book, Pieces of a Puzzle: the Link between Eating Disorders and ADD, Dr. Carolyn Dukarm focuses on the overlap between eating disorders and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and points out how diagnosing and treating both disorders can provide the missing pieces of the puzzle that hold the key to recovery.

People suffer daily from the symptoms of eating disorders. For some, however, eating is not the only area of their life that is out-of-control. Â?Every day I would see women that did not meet the criteria for either anorexia or bulimia, but clearly had disturbed eating habits, with typically no regularly planned meals or snacks, and an inability to follow dietary plans for any useful length of time,Â? states Dr. Carolyn Dukarm, an eating disorders specialist in Buffalo, new York. as these patients were more carefully evaluated in her Center for Eating Disorders, it became clear that the incidence of undiagnosed attention deficit disorder was very high.

The ADD/disordered eating connection is not difficult to understand. Healthy dietary regulation requires organization and planning Â? two areas of functioning that are typically difficult for those with ADHD. Good eating habits also require self-awareness Â? awareness of when one is hungry, awareness of when one is full. many individuals with ADHD report that they skip meals because they were busy and distracted; these same individuals often report that later their hunger becomes so intense that they swing in the opposite direction, overeating well beyond the point of reasonable intake because they donÂ?t know when to stop until they feel Â?stuffed.Â? And individuals eat for many reasons besides hunger Â? including boredom, self-stimulation, anger, sadness, reward, simple food availability, and stress relief. in addition, weakness in consistent self-regulation, a well-documented difficulty for those with ADHD, often leads to patterns of chronic over-eating.

Pieces of a Puzzle is divided into six sections, covering the spectrum from diagnosis to treatment of both eating disorders and ADD. Each section contains Â?guidelinesÂ? or specific action steps that the reader can take.
Alan, an Edmonton sales consultant, has something in common with comic Howie Mandel, host of reality TV shows Deal Or no Deal and Howie Do It.

Both were diagnosed as adults with ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a genetic chemical imbalance commonly thought of as a kid’s disease.

Looking back, both think they probably had it in childhood, but ADHD wasn’t recognized as a medical condition at the time.

But where Mandel, 52, is speaking out as part of the Adult ADHD is Real public-awareness campaign launched in the U.S. last fall, Alan, 56, is hiding his diagnosis because he thinks it could cost him his job.

There’s still a stigma to having a psychiatric disorder, he explains.

Three to five per cent of kids under seven have ADHD, formerly known as ADD (attention deficit disorder). most medical professionals initially thought kids outgrew it. But 70 to 75 per cent continue to have symptoms as adults, says Dr. Pratap Chokka, an Edmonton psychiatrist who specializes in treating and researching mood and anxiety disorders. (Famous adults with ADHD diagnosed as kids include Ty Pennington, host of TV’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.) Thirty per cent of Chokka’s patients have ADHD as well as a coexistent condition such as depression, anxiety disorder or bipolar disorder.

An estimated 10 million adult Americans and about one million adult Canadians have ADHD, but most don’t know it, Chokka says.

Alan was diagnosed almost two years ago, when he went for counselling to save his third marriage. Relationship problems and multiple marriages can be symptoms of ADHD.

"my wife was getting frustrated with what she perceived as my lack of attention to her," Alan says. "I would say I would do things and she was thinking I wasn’t going to do them, but in my mind I was going to do them, but in my own time, type of thing. we were on two different time planes, something that kept boiling up with her." Procrastination can be another symptom of ADHD.

A psychologist gave Alan a article about adult ADHD. he thought it sounded somewhat like him. But it was his wife’s agreement that clinched the diagnosis.

"She looked at the article and said, ‘This is you 100 per cent.’ " Alan now takes medications that even out his chemical imbalance.

"my concentration is pretty good now. I’m able to read because I can stay focused, I can stay on track working on a project. before, my mind would go off to different things." Alan and his wife attend group sessions with other couples dealing with adult ADHD and the prognosis for the marriage is hopeful.

"the problem I’m facing now is unlearning some of the bad habits like poor time-management that 50 years of masking my ADHD has created." he wonders how much easier life might have been, how much more successful he would be, if he had been diagnosed sooner.

The recognition of adult ADHD is still quite new, Chokka says. There is a strong genetic component (85 per cent of ADHD children have a family history), but the exact cause is uncertain, he adds.

People with ADHD are of normal or higher intelligence, adds Chokka, whose patients include highly educated professionals. "But they are unable to process information, retain it, and organize it." In children, ADHD manifests itself as hyperactivity — not being able to sit still, running around. Adults with ADHD mostly display inattentiveness. they can’t make decisions, they’re disorganized, they make lists of things they need to do, then lose the lists.

Chokka says he has patients who aren’t able to keep a job because of it.

"Imagine being chronically late for work, missing deadlines or meetings, spending hours on tasks and getting very little done, getting distracted from the simplest of tasks. Now take that home and see how it impacts your personal life and your relationship with others." Some people cope by using alcohol, cannabis or nicotine to help regulate their mood. their ADHD is sometimes diagnosed when their coping mechanisms get out of control and they go looking for help, Chokka says.

Other adults are diagnosed after their child is diagnosed and they recognize a similarity in symptoms.

If you’re not achieving your full potential and are trying to figure out why, Chokka suggests talking to your family doctor or a psychologist about the possibility of ADHD.

The disorder can’t be cured, but there is treatment available — medications, and, in less severe cases, cognitive behavioural therapy.

"you can’t do anything about the past," Alan says, "but you can do something about the future and getting the most out of what’s left of your life."

Twenty-year-old Ariel has been living both with anxiety and depression since the eighth grade. she says, “It got so bad where I just slept all day, I didn’t get out of bed, I didn’t do anything.”

That is in addition to attention deficit disorder. Ariel says, “I was already upset and depressed about the fact that I had ADD and had to take medications for that. When I found out I had two more things, I was like, ‘Oh my God! What’s going on?’”

Research from Harvard University shows girls with attention deficit are 19 times more likely to be depressed…and 15 times more likely to have bi-polar disorder than other girls.

Dr. Richard Winer, an Atlanta-area psychiatrist, says, “There is a very high likelihood that there will be something else besides ADHD going on, probably at least a 70 percent chance if not more.”

Why is one person so likely to have several disorders? Researchers say the conditions are genetically linked…and tend to aggravate each other.

Ariel says, “I try to do something, but I can’t because of the ADD, and it frustrates me. Then that makes me very nervous and anxious and that goes to the anxiety. and then when I get like that, I’ll go ‘Oh my god! I can’t do anything! I can’t do anything!’ and that leads to the depression.”

Experts say girls like Ariel often need one medication for ADHD and another for depression.

Dr. Winer says, “I generally will try to treat ADHD first if I think there is also mild to moderate depression alongside. If the depression appears to be extremely severe in nature, then that takes precedence over treating ADHD in terms of what do you treat first.”

Ariel often skips her medication. she says it’s a crutch, but it does work. her mom Arlene says, “She started taking some anti-depressants, and all of a sudden she was back to the way she had been six months earlier.”

Another study out of Harvard University shows boys with ADHD are also at risk for having another mental health problem, but the statistics are slightly less dramatic than they are for girls.

What we need To Know

Many parents seem to be ignoring medical advice when it comes to treating their child’s attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). a study conducted at New York University reveals that of 500 parents whose children have ADHD, 45 percent say behavioral therapy has been recommended, but less than one-quarter (21 percent) say that their child actually participates in it. in addition, 89 percent of parents with an ADHD child say medication has been prescribed for their child to help manage symptoms, but only 55 percent report their child is taking medication.
