LOGAN — a 28-year-old woman is facing felony charges for swapping cigarettes for Adderall with two juveniles in her neighborhood.

Court records show Sunny Morrisette was charged in 1st District Court Friday with seven counts of possession or use of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony and 10 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a class B misdemeanor, in connection with the exchanges. the woman apparently admitted to police that she was was “under a lot of stress” when she decided to try the prescription drug,

“(She) had heard good things about Adderall and wanted to try it,” according to a probable cause statement.

The woman then started to trade a brother and sister in her neighborhood their Adderall “and other pills or money” for her cigarettes. She told police the exchanges took place at least 10 times in the month of October, according to the probable cause statement.

Both juveniles also admitted to the exchanges.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, Adderall is a brand of drug that is used to control symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, and narcolepsy and is in a “class of medications called central nervous system stimulants.”

An initial appearance was scheduled for Dec. 19 in the case.

When we encounter the term Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), we usually immediately associate the condition with children, which is not entirely surprising, as it is one of the most recognized developmental problems in children.

ADHD, however, is a condition that is not experienced exclusively by children. Adults may have ADHD as well.

ADHD is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness, and for 60 percent of children who have ADHD, these symptoms continue into adulthood. Adults with ADHD may find it difficult to follow directions, remember information, concentrate, organize tasks, or complete tasks within a specific time limit.

ADHD in adults may lead to several behaviors and problems, including, but not limited to, low self esteem; difficulty in controlling anger; substance abuse or addiction; depression; and relationship issues, among others.

In addition, adults with ADHD were found to be more likely to smoke cigarettes, use illegal drugs, and have various driving violations, such as being cited for speeding; having their license suspended; and being involved in more car crashes.

While there are adults that may suffer from ADHD, researchers agree that it is not an adult-onset disorder and needs to be verified from childhood.

Treatment of ADHD in adults may consist of medication and cognitive and behavioral therapy.

Adults with ADHD are usually prescribed with stimulant drugs. the challenge with this treatment, however, is that stimulant drugs are controlled substances, which is why adults with ADHD are prone to substance abuse. the only non-stimulant medication that has been given approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is Strattera.

From coffee to restrictive diets, unconventional treatments for ADHD are being sought by parents and studied by scientists. a growing body of literature suggests omega-3 fatty acid supplementation may be helpful for treatment of some cases of ADHD.

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered necessary for our health yet not produced by our bodies. to obtain omega-3s, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), we must include them in our diet from sources like fish or nuts.

While omega-3s have been reported to confer benefit in chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis, they are also thought to play a crucial role in brain function and are one of the most studied alternative treatments for ADHD. from a 2009 review article, the role of fatty acids in the treatment of ADHD, published in Neuropharmacology:

Several arguments have been proposed to support the hypothesis that supplementation with essential fatty acids (EFAs) could be valuable in the treatment of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Indeed, this disorder seems to involve the monoaminergic systems which have been shown to be affected by polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) status, at least in animal models. In addition, several studies have

reported abnormal nutritional status with regard to EFAs in ADHD, indicating that lower levels of longchain PUFAs occur more frequently in the plasma and/or red blood cells of ADHD subjects. few nutritional

EFA supplementation studies have been reported in ADHD to date, but several of them have shown increased blood EFA levels, although their effects on ADHD-related symptoms were not or were only partly successful.

Researchers from the Yale Child Study Center performed a systematic review of randomized placebo-controlled trials examining omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in children with ADHD symptomatology. their results were published online in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

The analysis reviewed ten trials involving 699 children and included the following conclusion:

Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, particularly with higher doses of eicosapentaenoic acid, was modestly effective in the treatment of ADHD. the relative efficacy of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation was modest compared with currently available pharmacotherapies for ADHD such as psychostimulants, atomoxetine, or alpha-2 agonists. however, given its relatively benign side-effect profile and evidence of modest efficacy, it may be reasonable to use omega-3 fatty supplementation to augment traditional pharmacologic interventions or for families who decline other psychopharmacologic options.

The authors go on to state that “using omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in lieu of traditional pharmacologic treatments is not

recommended in children with significant ADHD symptoms.”

Sandy Newmark, M.D., is a behavioral pediatrician at the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine and author of the book, ADHD without Drugs: a Guide to the Natural Care of Children with ADHD. since I first interviewed him on the radio, he has continued to answer my questions about integrative approaches to behavioral problems in children, and recently shared some of his thoughts on the aforementioned meta-analysis:

I’m glad to see this meta-analysis confirms the effect of omega-3s. I think they made a bigger deal than necessary of the effect size compared to stimulants. Note that they made no mention of the side-effects of stimulants or the lack of information on long-term effects. also, as a practical matter, omega-3s alone are only part of an integrative approach.

I think it is also worth noting that the authors don’t mention the possible side effects of omega-3s, such as gastrointestinal distress or excessive blood thinning.

Having taken omega-3s for several years, I can acknowledge that they contribute to occasional fish-oil flavored burps, but feel that the potential benefits far outweigh this minor side effect. even before the recent studies suggesting that the anti-inflammatory effect of omega-3s were helpful in anxiety, I found that regularly taking high EPA-DHA ratio fish oil helped me feel calmer, potentially making it easier for me to focus or be less impulsive.

“A strictly supervised restricted elimination diet is a valuable instrument to assess whether ADHD is induced by food,” wrote the study authors. “We think that dietary intervention should be considered in all children with ADHD, provided parents are willing to follow a diagnostic restricted elimination diet for a five-week period, and provided expert supervision is available,” they concluded.

Results of the study are published in the Feb. 5 issue of The Lancet.

BUFFALO, new York — Teen drivers with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are the new focus of safety advocates because they perform as poorly on simulated driving tests as drunk drivers. A University of Buffalo study is using such tools as onboard driving monitors to help improve their driving skills.

“Teens with ADHD are such risky drivers,” said Greg Fabiano, an associate professor at the University of Buffalo who is heading the study, in a phone interview with inside Line. “We have to do something to help them.”

One 2008 study showed that people with ADHD who were sober performed as poorly on simulated driving tests as drivers without ADHD who were legally drunk. The U.S. Department of Transportation is in the midst of a high-profile campaign against distracted driving.

Fabiano’s latest study, funded by a $2.8-million grant from the National Institutes of Health, uses an in-car device that monitors the teen’s driving behavior. It tracks top speed, as well as any instances of hard acceleration and braking. The teen drivers also sign a contract with their parents that rewards good driving behavior and penalizes poor driving.

“The teens actually like this (onboard) monitor because it demonstrates that they are obeying the contract, which often leads to more privileges,” said Fabiano.

The study won’t be completed for several more years. But families appear to like the approach, which includes retraining parents to stop screaming at teens from the backseat to control poor driving habits.

ADHD affects about 7 percent of the U.S. population. It is called one of the most common psychiatric disorders, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is distinguished by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

ADHD is a common childhood disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Children with ADHD have trouble paying attention, focusing and can be hyperactive. Parents have long suspected that sugary foods might be a culprit in inducing symptoms, but there’s not a lot of evidence to support this theory, according to the NIMH. however, food additives and preservatives have recently been singled out as possibly having an effect on children’s behavior, though the evidence isn’t yet conclusive.

Since some children have negative physical reactions to certain foods — such as eczema, asthma and gastrointestinal problems — that affect different organ systems, it has been suggested that foods may also affect the brain in a way that results in adverse behavior, according to information in the study.

To test this theory, the researchers recruited 100 children from Belgium and the Netherlands. the children were between the ages of 4 and 8, and all had been diagnosed with ADHD. Most of the children were boys.

The children were randomly assigned to one of two groups. one group was placed on the restrictive elimination diet, and the other group served as a control group and received advice on healthy eating.

The restrictive diet began with a diet called the “few foods diet,” which includes just rice, meat, vegetables, pears and water. the researchers then complemented this diet with certain foods, such as potatoes, fruits and wheat. the restrictive diet lasted for five weeks.

During the next four weeks, kids in the restricted diet group received two food challenge diets, in which certain foods were reintroduced into the diet. the researchers selected foods that were considered both low- and high-IgG foods.

IgG is an antibody made by the immune system that some alternative medicine practitioners believe is linked to food hypersensitivities; however, IgG testing is controversial among many mainstream physicians and even some naturopaths, according to background information in the study.

Some complementary medicine practices test for IgG and recommend eliminating foods high in IgG, explained Dr. Jaswinder Ghuman, who wrote an accompanying editorial in the same issue of the journal.

Forty-one children completed the restrictive phase of the diet. Of those, 78% had a reduction in their ADHD symptoms, compared with no improvement in the controls. Nine children (22%) didn’t respond to the diet. on an ADHD symptom scale that ranges from 0 to 72 points, with a higher score indicating more severe symptoms, the average reduction was 24 points, according to the study.

Thirty children who had shown a response on the restrictive diet went on to the challenge test. Nineteen of those children had a relapse in symptoms on the challenge test. What’s more, it didn’t appear to matter if the children with challenged with a low- or high-IgG food.

“Measuring IgG levels in kids doesn’t seem helpful,” Ghuman said, but it does look as if the elimination diet may help some children.

“If parents have noticed that a child’s behavior seems to get worse with certain foods, it may be worth considering,” said Ghuman, who is an associate professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

“But, for this diet to work, you have to be very consistent with it, and you have to pay attention to nutrition. It should be done under the supervision of a primary care doctor, and if possible, a dietician,” she advised.

Ghuman said that this study doesn’t answer a number of questions, such as whether or not the elimination diet reduces symptoms long-term. and, she added, that clinical practice shouldn’t be changed based on the results of one study.

Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park, echoed Ghuman’s concerns.

“Since none of the children stayed on the diet beyond five weeks, it is hard to know if this dietary intervention offers sustained benefit,” he said, adding, “Since it is more difficult to enforce restricted diets in older children, this approach may not be suitable for the majority of older children with ADHD.”

Adesman also pointed out that this study is only applicable to children with ADHD, not to children who had ADD without the hyperactivity component.

When her oldest daughter first started showing signs of having ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder) she thought it was a discipline issue.”I used to ask other parents if they had trouble with (their child completing) homework assignments. Often they said they did, but our issues were different. I literally had to stay at my daughter’s elbow to get her to do her work,” recalled the East Whiteland resident.Although she admits she was resistant to the idea of her daughter being helped with medication and wasn’t even sure if she believed ADHD was a real disorder, Cavanaugh decided to do some research on the subject. That effort eventually led to diagnoses of ADHD for three of her five children, as well as for her husband, Patrick, and herself.”Learning about my daughter’s behavior was revelation for me, and my husband saw it too,” said Cavanagh.the connection is not surprising, since studies have found that ADHD, one of the most common brain disorders that can continue through adolescence and adulthood, runs in families. And three of the five Cavanaghs who have the disorder are also part of a growing trend — girls and women being diagnosed with ADHD.Marisa Burton was diagnosed with ADHD soon after her three children were born. a teacher with a master’s degree in special education, Burton had twins, and then another child 14 months later.”I had high expectations for myself as a mother, but when the kids all started becoming mobile it was difficult to keep my patience. I was resentful because I was stuck at home, and I was bored. And the biggest thing is that I didn’t have any structure in my days. I lost my routine,” said Burton, who lives in West Grove.Burton certainly isn’t alone. Ari Tuckman is a West Chester psychologist who specializes in treating people with ADHD. He said many women with ADHD are able to manage their symptoms when they are working, but once they have children things can start to unravel.”Raising kids in an unstructured environment is very difficult for women with ADHD. It’s up to the parent to provide the structure, and that’s where they are struggling,” Tuckman said, adding, “Another common place for these issues to come out is in college, since that is not a very structured atmosphere either.”Those struggles can also develop into depressed and anxious feelings, two things that are often prevalent in girls and women with ADHD.”Some of the differences between the ways boys and girls present with ADHD are cultural. Boys are more likely to act out and get into trouble, girls are more likely to become anxious or depressed about it,” Tuckman said.Burton explained it this way, “There’s a huge difference for girls with ADHD. Society has so many expectations for them. for one, they’re expected to be neat and tidy, but when you are barely able to handle the things you need to do, it’s hard to make sure you look cute.”Now that her own 12-year-old daughter is diagnosed with ADHD, Burton said she feels a special connection.”I always felt that I was different from the other girls and I felt isolated. my daughter is a tomboy, like I was. Neither of us are into what we call ‘mall talk,’ like some girls. the differences can make it hard to develop good social skills,” Burton said, adding, “I hope my daughter’s experiences are better because she has my support.”And Kelly Cavanagh, who has two daughters who are diagnosed with ADHD, said the family has developed many different strategies to deal with such issues as time management and organization deficits, impulsiveness and procrastination.”The biggest thing was being able to realize where the behaviors come from. How old is the child? Doctor's will not diagnose a child with ADHD if they are under 4 or 5 years. This is because a lot of the symptoms of ADHD are very similar to normal terrible twos behavior. they like to wait til the child is in school so they may get a teacher's perspective of behavior when the parent is not around. Symptoms can be, inability to sit still. not able to focus. Starting a project but not finishing. You should see you pediatrician.

Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research

• On the surface, children with fetal alcohol exposure and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) appear to be similar with respect to poor academic performance
• But a new study exploring number processing shows that each disorder appears to affect different areas of the brain
• These results indicate that the treatments for one might not be effective for the other, and therefore, there is a need to create tailor-made interventions for each

In children, the brain is in a constant state of flux as it analyzes and evaluates stimuli from the environment. Fetal alcohol exposure and ADHD represent two disorders that can affect children’s ability to learn and process information from a very young age.

Both ADHD and fetal alcohol exposure are linked to poor academic performance in cognition and attention, so the researchers decided to try to pinpoint the exact brain areas affected by each disorder with the hope that this research could lead to the creation and development of new and improved treatments.

The results will be published in the March 2011 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and are currently available at Early View.

Joseph L. Jacobson, lead author of the study and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, said that the goal of the study was to determine if alcohol-related deficits in magnitude comparison (the ability to mentally represent and evaluate relative quantities) seen in children with prenatal alcohol exposure would also be true for ADHD.

“We thought it very interesting that this is not the case. the arithmetic deficit in ADHD is mediated primarily by poorer executive function and attention problems rather than magnitude comparison, which is more often impaired in children with fetal alcohol exposure.”

The researchers assessed 262 African-American adolescents at 14 years of age. Their mothers were recruited during pregnancy and interviewed extensively regarding their use of alcohol to determine the amount of alcohol the child was exposed to prior to birth. the children were evaluated for ADHD symptoms at ages 7.5 and 14 by parent/guardian and teacher reports, and their number processing abilities were assessed at 14 years.

The results showed that children with fetal alcohol exposure demonstrated strong deficits in number comparison, while children with ADHD demonstrated deficits in attention and memory. thus, although number processing is affected in both ADHD and fetal alcohol exposure, the exact cause of the difficulties appears to be different.

In a related study using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) conducted in Cape Town, South Africa, the researchers found that, when given simple number processing problems, alcohol-exposed children appear to be able to recruit different brain regions to compensate for the damage done to the areas of the brain. However, the recovery is never complete and is variable at best depending on the child.

“The extent of the brain damage experienced by the individuals is an important predictor of recovery of function and is influenced by the quantity and duration of alcohol consumed while in utero and various genetic and metabolic characteristics of the mother and fetus,” said Julie a. Kable, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine. “More extensive damage leads to less available resources to compensate.”

However, Jacobson does not consider the performance of the children in this study to constitute recovery. he said that the alcohol-exposed children in the fMRI study performed as well as the control group on the arithmetic tasks only because of the relatively easy nature of the problems selected for that study.

“In our view, the alternate strategies these children use are less efficient than those used by the controls. As a result, these strategies are not likely to be as effective as the problems get harder.”

Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a very serious disease that has been diagnosed more frequently each year, it seems. ADHD Symptoms in Children is extremely frustrating for parents because it can often be difficult for a parent to accurately assess. of course typically it takes a specialist to diagnose properly the condition of ADHD. you may find there are alot of different symptoms that can manifest in your child. often all you need to do is keep an eye on your child where ADHD is a concern. there are alot of different things that can affect this disorder and just as many treatment options. we will talk about some of the main symptoms of ADHD here in this article. however you must realize this is not a complete list of symptoms there are many others.

One symptom is the ADHD child has a tremendously hard time with following through with something, and it's usually instructions of some kind. What that means is many tasks beyond schoolwork, for example. While some little kids will have an endless supply of energy it's not always a sign of ADHD. This might seem like a no brainer but alot of parents are concerned about their children suffering with this disorder. ADHD and your child can be worrisome to many parents. so it is imperative that you consider all of the possibilities.
