ANN ARBOR, Mich., Oct. 14 (UPI) — U.S. researchers say they are beginning to detect behaviors and symptoms of autism that may make earlier diagnosis — and intervention — possible.

Brooke Ingersoll of Michigan State University said autism is normally diagnosed between ages 2 and 3, but if physicians could detect autism spectrum disorders in babies as young as 12 months, it might be possible to help them earlier — and perhaps even stop them from developing autism.

“In the field, there’s this new excitement,” Ingersoll said in a statement. “We’re starting to get a picture of what autism looks like in the first years of life.”

Results are coming from studies that tracked large numbers of children ages 6 months to 3 years, when a formal diagnosis of autism could be determined, Ingersoll said.

“The group of children that eventually develop autism spectrum disorders looks different from typically-developing kids,” Ingersoll said.

For example, at 12 months, children who will later develop autism are less likely to show “joint attention behaviors” paying attention to both a toy and another person, Ingersoll said.

If young children have problems with social behaviors, it may then explain some of the later problems in autism. for example, if they don’t imitate, that could help explain why they have difficulty with language later, Ingersoll said.

The findings are published in the Current Directions in Psychological Science.

Around 6 weeks I started getting nauseous and was vomiting also couldn't eat certain foods that I normally love, not sure of my due date yet as I haven't had a u/s yet.

2 weeks b4 a test could even tell me I was with both babies due Xmas day

This is my third pregnancy and I have not had any symptoms at all besides a missed period im 5 weeks…

besides a missed period, my extremely large and sore breasts were the tall tale sign for me (both pregnancies). i noticed this at around 5 weeks. due date with bub#2 is 28 September.

I have had 2 miscarriages in the past year. One in October of 2006 and just been treated for another. I have had 2 pregnancies resulting with no complications and healthy babies. During my pregnancy with my son who was born in July 2004, I found out I had uterine fibroids which caused lots of pain during the pregnancy, especially as my tummy expanded! I have had no symptoms ever since but am wondering if this could be related to the previous miscarriages? the doctor wants to remove them surgically but I want more children. I have 4 fibroids on the outter part of the utereus about the size of key limes as he described. any one ever had this problem who went ahead with the surgery and then had successful births? And is it possible that they are causing the miscarriages? thanks in advance for you help!

If you go on the net and search fiboids it will tell you what they are. From what I read you might be safe but only a doctor can tell you for sure. I could be completely wrong ,but it depends on location and probably other items not known. Sorry I can,t help more.

I'm so sorry for your lost. My mother had uterine fibroids when she delivered my brother and they were removed. She then went on to have my youngest brother and he was born happy and healthy. I think it's possible but I would suggest you ask your doctor about your specific circumstances.

Also…as an side note: if you want to have more children in the future, know that "giving birth" isn't the only way to become a mother.

Is it possible i could be pregnant after 5 months when had sex with no symptoms.also i have taken the test 4 times and i am not showing and having periods. Could i possibly be pregnant?

Are you saying you are not having period or you are having them? I wasn't clear on this. I think if you aren't having periods it can be possible you are pregnant. I was watching a show on TLC where a few women didn't even show or have the symptoms of pregnancy and they had babies so I guess its a definite possibility. Some of them even said the tests turned up negative each time. if you haven't had periods you may want to just get a check up at your doctor anyway to make sure nothing is wrong. Hope this helps!

You said you took 4 tests, i am assuming it came out negative because your asking if you're pregnant and stuff. if your tests turned out negative i would advise you to ask your doctor and get yourself checked. if your tests turned out positive then you are pregnant, you can still be pregnant and not have any symptoms, every woman is different. Hope this helps.

You should be showing around now, but I guess it is possible, it seems like you would of felt your uterus stretching, if you are though, and you haven't gone to the doctor yet, you better hurry because doctors don't accept someone after 5 months, then you've got to have a natural birth at home and just hope that everything is fine.

If your getting negative tests then I am 99% sure you are not pregnant. Some women have gone full term and not known they were pregnant but it's rare and I doubt they ever tested.

If your having periods, that is a pretty good indication that you aren't pregnant. if your not, you need to go to the doctor to find out why you are skipping so many.

Talk to a doctor. I didn't show with my daughter until 6 1/2,7 months. you didn't tell us if your tests came out positive or negative,so I'm assuming negative. I would think you'd need to get checked out,as ovarian cysts can cause these same types of issues. I had them.

1 in a MILLIONTH chance. Some women have vaginal BLEEDING but not periods. if you're not showing by now and you're having periods, I'd say stop worrying.

My aunt found out she was pregnant at 5 months. thought she had an ovarian cyst and went for an ultrasound. And surprise!

i had no symptoms what so ever apart from a missed period? and what did the test say??

i was bringing my baby to the y and someone brought to the day care there and their child had it. she is not infected with it. just want to know how long i should keep her out as a precaution. this is my first time hearing about that disease.

Two of my children had it when they were babies. it looks like little white blisters in the mouth. The hands and feet get little patches of pealing skin. it is treated with antibiotics.

It's more popular than you think…besides I think it gives the dr a diagnoses when they really don't know what it is…

Symptoms include:
High fever – often up to five days.
Severe fussiness – this is often the worst part of the illness.
Severe mouth pain or sore throat
Copious drooling
Refusal to eat or even drink
Rash – small, red or white spots may, but not always, appear on the hands or feet (thus the name of the illness). A red, lacy rash can also appear anywhere on the body.

My son just had it. He was exposed the same way your child was. He devoloped white sores in his mouth and in his diaper area but no where else. He screamed constantly nothing would console him it lasted 6 days. and one day he woke up and it was gone and he was better. they wouldnt give him any medicine just and antacid and advil (mix 1/2 and 1/2 parts. There no antibiotic dut to the fact its viral. it can take 7 to 14 days for symptoms. best of luck it will be along tiring ride!

My kids have never had it but my friend's son did.He had a mouthfull of Canker sores and I mean a mouthfull. Underneath and on top of his tounge inside cheeks the poor kid could hardly eat because it hurt .He also had a rash on his legs . The Dr gave Mom some antiboitic rinse for his mouth but he rash went away on it's own.

It’s a fact that parents really can tell when something is off with a child, even though autism symptoms can be quite different in children. Autism shares similar symptoms with other medical problems, and that’s why it’s imperative that a professional assessment is performed to determine autism. Our discussion centers on the usual symptoms found in autistic children, and these symptoms are not all expressed equally in all children.

The first symptom we’ll discuss is failure to imitate. a normal child will imitate almost everything they see right down to smiles and sounds. However most autistic children do or can not. Babies soon learn to smile when someone smiles at them. One symptom of autism is a fear or dislike of any changes in daily routines. Autistic people, from the lowest to the highest functioning, tend to like repetition and ritual. Movement and routine are basically self taught and self managed such as how they prefer to stand or certain types of movement. regardless of what the routine is, if you try to force a change they will become disturbed. taking into consideration how change affects the autistic person is an important factor in treating this condition.

There are more symptoms that are considered common in autism, and that are seen frequently in the very young child. the range of symptoms is different from one person to the next, and that is why any treatment for this condition must be constructed based on that person’s particular symptoms and situation. Autism research has been an ongoing concern for many years, and obviously more needs to be done so the disease can be unraveled and understood.

Early autism intervention is critical to a positive outcome for children. Not only must intervention be appropriate for the child’s needs, but it must come as early as possible. many autism interventions do not begin until a child is in his or her toddler years, and the parents and siblings can feel somewhat removed from the treatment process. Not so with the treatment offered at the Hamstead, England-based Parent-Infant Clinic. Treatment there is an Infant-Family program comprised of three phases, all designed to assist parents and babies with symptoms of pre-autism find new ways to relate to each other, resulting in positive outcomes for the child.

The clinic offers different treatments based on the child’s age. For children under 5 years of age, the Infant-Family program is one intensive program lasting 2 to 4 weeks followed by a follow-up program that lasts for 1 to 2 years. The staff works with the entire family and the child 6 hours a day, 6 days a week. One day of the treatment is performed in the family environment.

In the assessment and formulation phase of the treatment program (phase 1), the baby is observed to identify what obstacles there may be to communication. Family relationships, a critical part of the assessment, are explored and observed, and emotional, environmental, or relational obstacles to communication are identified.

Practitioners observe and investigate the entire spectrum of child development in order to identify problems with social, communication, and behavioral and emotional development.

Phase 2 is the therapeutic intervention phase in which practitioners work with all family members. Work with the parents and child together helps to build on sensitive ways of being together and to expand on the parent/child relationship skills. Work with the infant in this phase helps the infant to understand his or her repetitious behaviors and to expand their communication skills. Play objects are use to stimulate sensory development.

Working with parents and siblings together teases out patterns of managing emotions that may be obstacles to helping the infant respond to them.

Finally, in keeping with the whole child / whole family approach, staff works with the couple to explore issues that may interfere with effective co-parenting.

Because having a special-needs sibling can be difficult, the staff works with siblings to help expand their ability to manage their feelings and frustrations.

The final stage (phase 3) is the integration phase in which staff helps the family to anticipate challenges that may be in their future, to support the family during transitions, and to document the progress made during treatment.

The Parent-Infant clinic’s website states that they “can say that 100% of the infants we treated achieved physical and emotional development.” clearly this innovative approach to autism treatment not only starts very early, but the nature of its family-centered intervention helps to achieve phenomenal results for the child.

I was wondering how soon flu like symptoms occur when first pregnant.
You know when your pregnant you just think your sick with the flu? And its really pregnancy. Throwing up, nausea, etc….flu/pregnancy. get it?

Well that doesn't always apply to everybody because pregnancy symptoms varies for everybody. With flu-like symptoms you have to be very careful and particular because as almost every country is currently experiencing right HINI Virus. you should closely monitor all these symptoms and get tested if it persists for more than three days. However, pregnancy symptoms can be very similar to flu-like symptoms with the nausea or vomiting. so yes you do have a point but it will match for those two symptoms only.

It depends on the woman. also if you're pregnant w/2 or more babies, symptoms will start earlier. I'd say it's anywhere from 4 – 8 wks that most women get their first symptoms.

He was a new doctor to me, the second I had seen in my attempt to find a physician after moving to a new city. the white-haired man looked straight at my mother and me from across his desk and asked how comfortable we would be with that. that was five years after I had been diagnosed with stage four (of four) endometriosis, and he was suggesting I conceive so I could have a hysterectomy—the second most commonly performed women’s surgery—as soon as possible.

every day, women’s lives are saved and improved thanks to the work of surgeons. They rid patients of cancerous tumors and right malfunctioning body parts; they stitch up wounds and oftentimes they deliver babies in distress. Surgery can seem like an obvious choice to better your health, but it may not be your best choice. the two most common surgeries doctors perform on women in the United States are Caesarean sections to deliver babies, followed by hysterectomies to remove reproductive organs. Both surgeries have saved countless lives and are essential for many women, but they also come with risks. a Caesarean gets its name from the belief that Julius Caesar was delivered in the same manner. the surgery consists of an incision through the uterus and abdominal wall through which the baby is delivered. Starting in 1996, Caesarean rates have risen in all 50 states and among women of all ethnicities. Overall, the rate has increased by 56 percent, from a low of 20.7 percent of all births in 1996 to 32.3 percent in 2008. Mississippi had the third highest rate of Caesarean births in the country in 2007, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, with 36.2 percent of Cesarean section births. a few reasons for a Caesarean are an abnormal fetal heart rate or position, fetal meconium (ruptured amniotic sac) or placental complications. Surgeons do the procedure as a matter of convenience, too. But a Caesarean, as with any other major surgery, has risks and drawbacks, including longer hospital stays, risk of infection, blood loss and anesthesia complications. Caesarean aftercare can include waiting two weeks to drive, no heavy lifting for two to eight weeks, use of narcotic pain relievers and waiting about six weeks to return to work, versus about two with a vaginal delivery, according to a podcast interview with Dr. James Holt Crews of the Women‘s Clinic. Experts also cite potential harm to infants delivered via Cesarean, a few of which are late-preterm complications, like problems with respiration and digestion, and development of childhood asthma and even Type 1 diabetes. Doulas or midwives can work with an expectant mother and her doctor to ensure the most successful birthing experience in the delivery room. These trained health professionals follow the “Midwives Model of Care,” which includes “Monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother … hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support.” the second most common surgery performed on women in the U.S. is the hysterectomy, which removes a woman’s uterus and, in some cases, her ovaries. in 2000, Mississippi had the highest rate of hysterectomies in the country, at 30.8 percent of women 18 and older having had a hysterectomy, according to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control. Doctors perform more than 600,000 hysterectomies annually in the U.S., and about three-quarters of those don’t meet the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guidelines, according to the National Uterine Fibroids Foundation. Surgeons perform the procedure to remove cancerous tumors, uterine fibroids and complications of endometriosis or uterine prolapse. While it is likely the best choice for cancer treatment, a hysterectomy can have complicated after-effects like early menopause, increased risk for heart disease, osteoporosis, dementia and cognitive impairment, weight gain and sagging organs. Women suffering from endometriosis and uterine fibroids may find relief with alternative treatments. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that grow inside or outside of the uterine wall. as many as 80 percent of all women may have fibroids; however, most do not suffer symptoms. Endometriosis is when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus, often on the ovaries and other organs. It is one of the top three causes of female infertility and affects more than 5.5 million women in the U.S. It is commonly associated with incredible pain and bleeding and is ranked in stages, one being the mildest and four being most severe. After consulting with more than 14 doctors, I tried nearly every treatment available to manage my endometriosis. the most helpful treatment at the time was laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive procedure. While laparoscopy surgeries helped me tremendously, to steer clear of the knife, I’ve also found a combination of birth control, pain medicines, and eating a diet low in wheat and sugar that works best for me. if you are one of the thousands of women considering surgery, talk to your doctor, and get a second opinion, if necessary. Risks exist with any surgical procedure. Liver failure occurs when the body’s liver can no longer function properly. This is often preceded by liver disease, which can have numerous symptoms. Liver failure, however, is marked by several symptoms, which taken together with blood tests and other medical exams indicate the liver’s function is impaired to an extraordinary extent.

One marked symptom of liver failure is jaundice. Jaundice is easy to note physically since it discolors the skin to a yellow or orange tint. The whites of the eyes may also appear yellowish. Jaundice is a sign of the liver’s inability to successfully excrete bilirubin from the body. Although many babies suffer form jaundice after birth, this is not generally a symptom of liver failure. However, jaundice in adults is always cause for concern.

People with liver failure may also bleed easily or bruise excessively. Platelet count may be reduced in those with a failing liver, which “thins” the blood, making it harder for the blood to coagulate if a cut or a blunt injury occurs. Lower platelet counts are also symptomatic of numerous other illnesses.

Ascites, the accumulation of large amounts of fluid in the abdominal cavity, are quite frequently the result of liver failure. In fact, an abnormally protruding stomach is often a sign of severe liver failure. Ascites may also be caused by a failing heart or other conditions, which should be ruled out.

People with liver failure may also have a reduction in their ability to think and remember. overall, their health may be poor and they may be more susceptible to common illnesses. Liver failure can also cause significant fatigue, a general feeling of weakness, and loss of appetite or nausea.

If liver failure is unarrested, symptoms progress resulting in possible seizures, disorientation, inability to speak, and impaired judgment. Failure of other major organs may occur since the body works cooperatively with each organ. Ultimately death will occur if medical intervention is either not feasible or is not sought. Many who have liver failure can partially arrest symptoms through treatment with medications. However, some with liver failure require a liver transplant in order to recover.

Jaundice(yellowing of the skin and mucus membranes) is a sign of a failing liver.

turning yellow is a symptom of liver failure, plus long term alcohol damage leads to vomiting blood.

The liver can repair itself up to a point, but serious damage may need a transplant.
