After months of frigid temps, dodging rainstorms and wrapped in warm blankets, Memorial Day is the first holiday to celebrate the start of warmer weather. the sun is out. Sunglasses are on. Sweat is glistening. Finally, there’s hope that summer is on the way.

Most Memorial Day celebrations are outside in the heat, gathering with friends or family over food, or consuming alcoholic beverages. Yet, even in May’s typical 70- to 80-degree weather, being healthy and preventing illness should be on the forefront of the brain.

Please pass the potato salad… with a side of food poisoningThe lack of refrigeration at barbecue lunches invites bacteria to join the party. the biggest culprits are dishes made with mayonnaise, such as potato salad or coleslaw. Not fully cooking meat on the grille and accidentally touching cooked food with the raw meat utensils are also setups for food poisoning.

Food poisoning symptoms are not subtle. the abdominal pain, cramping, vomiting and diarrhea often hits suddenly, after two to six hours of eating the offending food. most times, it has to simply runs its course. but, remember to stay hydrated and avoid milk or dairy until the diarrhea stops.

Pregnant women, children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems have to be especially careful.

In order to prevent infection, cook meat until fully done. Keep raw food far away from cooked food. And, keep the cold items in a good quality cooler with lots of ice. Maintain the cooler as close to 40 degrees Fahrenheit as possible.

Don’t shrivel upDuring hot weather months, especially when exercising, make it a point to drink more fluids. Waiting until thirst sets in is not always a reliable judge of dehydration, especially in older adults. many people are already dehydrated long before feeling thirsty. the best judge of hydration is the color of urine. a well-hydrated person’s urine is clear or pale yellow. anything darker, and it’s time to drink up.

Children and elderly adults are most sensitive to severe dehydration. but, regular, healthy adults are still 60 percent water. Even a small amount of dehydration can keep the body from working optimally. Women are suggested to drink eight glasses a day of fluids and men, 12 cups.

Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages — such as coffee, green tea and soda — actually dehydrates even more because the person loses fluids by urinating. so when drinking caffeinated liquids, increase fluid intake to make up for what’s lost.

Running out of steamHeat illnesses usually happen from staying in the heat too long. Sweating is the body’s way of releasing internal heat, but sometimes sweating alone can’t keep up with the body’s rising temperature. Horsing around or exercising too much in hot weather increases the risk of dehydration. Young children, older adults and being overweight adds to that risk.

Heat exhaustion is characterized by profuse sweating, lightheadedness, nausea, headache and vomiting. Muscle cramps may occur and even precede heat exhaustion. Immediate treatment should involve getting out of the heat, sitting in front of a fan or using cold water and ice to get cool.

If not, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which is life-threatening. the dizziness and lightheadedness worsens, the person becomes confused, has seizures or can fall into a coma. the person is no longer sweating and the pulse is fast and weak. People with heat stroke need to be immediately cooled and brought to a hospital.

Alcohol and energy drinks make heat exhaustion and stroke more likely due to the dehydration. Also, ingredients in energy drinks — especially caffeine — can alone raise the body’s temperature in hot weather.

Poisoned by a good timeDrinking many alcoholic beverages back-to-back — typically five or more — over a short period of time can cause alcohol poisoning. when the blood’s level of alcohol increases to dangerous levels, the person can become unconscious and breathing can slow down, decreasing oxygen to the brain and body. If the person vomits while unconscious, they can choke to death on their vomit. If any of these symptoms occur after someone drinks alcohol, get them to medical attention immediately.

And driving this weekend? Remain sober. Nearly half of motor vehicle accidents involve alcohol. And, that number goes up around holidays and proms, making Memorial Day weekend a prime danger.

A RETURN of La Niña weather heralds an explosion of bugs and disease.

Forecasters are predicting another long, wet and humid summer - and those warm, sticky days could mean all sorts of potential health problems.what is known as a La Niña weather pattern is tipped to bring plenty of rain and humidity over summer. this weather is a haven for bacteria and insects, and food poisoning and gastroenteritis are more common. An explosion of flies and mosquitoes expected in the coming months is also set to lift the risk of viral infections.

Be on guard:“if it is hot, people tend to be outside a bit more, so they are more exposed and of course people get relaxed and less vigilant,’’ says Dr Liz Hanna, convenor of the Climate Change Adaptation Research Network - Human Health. “if we are facing another long, hot summer, we have to be on guard.’’ Experts are currently analysing data from last year’s La Niña, which brought extreme temperatures and flooding along Australia’s east coast. it is expected the figures will show an increase in various illnesses caused by the extreme weather.it is already known that last summer’s downpours saw the largest outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases in the past decade in western NSW and parts of inland Queensland.Dr Cameron Webb, an entomologist from the University of Sydney, says if current conditions continue we could see a repeat, with large numbers of mosquitoes expected. “As soon as you add all that water to areas that were once drought-affected, you start getting big populations of mosquitoes,’’ Dr Webb says. “when we get hot weather combined with rain these insects can live longer, so the problems can persist for longer.”

Once bitten:in Australia, mosquitoes carry two main infections - Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus. Other potentially deadly mosquito-borne illnesses include dengue fever and Murray Valley encephalitis. there are about 5000 notified cases of Ross River/Barmah Forest infection every year but the true figure could be higher, says Dr Webb, who suspects mild cases are often not reported. Both viruses cause a rash, fever and joint pain lasting from a few days to weeks or even months. Both diseases can also leave victims with extreme tiredness and weakness. Birgit Bradtke, 43, from Kununurra in Western Australia, says she still has relapses almost five years after being bitten by a mosquito infected with Ross River fever. “the first six to 12 months were the worst, but all the symptoms, especially the tiredness, can come back.”

Watch out for fleas:Fleas and ticks also thrive in the predicted muggy conditions, says Dr Bob Rees, a veterinarian with Bayer Healthcare.such parasites are likely to be brought into the home by pets and can cause more than just nasty bites or allergic reactions.the Australian Medical Journal this year reported on the first known case of cat flea typhus, after four members of a Melbourne family fell ill from a flea-infested kitten. the illness had not previously been seen in Australia. it is possible there have been other cases, but until recently the pathology to prove it was not available, Dr Rees says.Flea bites transmit the bacterium to humans. it causes a rash, flu, high temperatures and lethargy and sometimes serious complications such as pneumonia. “it is relatively easy to treat in humans with standard antibiotics,’’ Dr Rees says.Researchers from Murdoch University are also investigating whether Lyme disease exists in Australia. the bacterium, transmitted by tick bites, is well known in North America and Europe. Lyme disease starts off as a rash but, if left undiagnosed, can cause permanent arthritic conditions, chronic fatigue and heart damage. it can also be treated with antibiotics.

Staying safe:As a precaution against ticks, long-coated animals should be clipped in the warmer months, Dr Rees warns. Lawns should also be mowed regularly.Clearing puddles and other stagnant water around the home will help ward off mosquitoes, as will insect screens and using a good insect repellent.With the number of cases of food-borne illnesses also increasing as temperatures rise, extra precautions, including vigilance over food temperatures  and better hand hygiene, need to be taken when preparing food or eating outdoors.

Coral researchers and reef managers will be able to identify coral infections using a new method that allows them to classify specific diseases based on the presence of microbes.

This could lead to more effective action to reduce the impact of disease on the world’s imperilled coral reefs.

“Current classification of coral diseases is mostly based on a description of how the coral has deteriorated, such as the pattern of tissue loss and abnormal colours,” says Joseph Pollock, a PhD student at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies. “This is an ineffective way to identify coral diseases because different diseases can often look very similar. for instance, in the Caribbean alone, more than six “white” diseases show the same characteristics of tissue loss exposing white coral skeletons.

Coral diseases can be caused by a number of different microbes, including viruses, bacteria and fungi. Knowing exactly which toxic organism leads to a particular disease is therefore important for accurate diagnosis – and for planning how to manage or control its impact.

One of Pollock’s supervisors, David Bourne from the Australian Institute of Marine Science, says that the recent worldwide decline of coral reefs has been accompanied by increased disease, creating an urgent need for a deeper understanding of the various diseases, including what harmful bacteria and viruses contribute to different coral diseases, what triggers them and how they spread.

“Instead of relying on appearances to tell us what disease the corals have, we need to determine what’s happening to them before the symptoms show. this will help us to control, or reduce the impacts.”

“The technology is called quantitative-PCR (qPCR) and is often used in human medical research. qPCR works as a genetic fingerprinting technique that both detects and quantifies a specific DNA molecule in a sample. It can detect pathogens at even very low levels – as few as a couple of bacteria in a cup of seawater,” mr Pollock says.

Apart from testing corals for the presence of pathogens, researchers can also use the technology on water samples to gauge the general health of the wider coral reef environment, mr Pollock says.

“This technology is sure to have many applications in the future”, he says, “as marine environments are put under pressure by multiple impacts from rapid coastal development, declining water quality, and climate change”.

Market adoption of Meridian Bioscience’s (NASDAQ:VIVO) new molecular diagnostic testing platform illumigene will go a long way toward determining the company’s future.

Cincinnati-area Meridian is betting big on the technology, hoping it’ll help rescue the diagnostic testing company from its recent struggles. the company has reported declining year-over-year earnings in several recent quarters and twice in the last few months downwardly revised its full-year earnings outlook for 2011.

Meridian’s illumigene platform provides its hospital and laboratory customers with a simpler, cheaper option to test samples for certain types of bacteria without the use of expensive instrumentation. It represents Meridian’s first foray into molecular diagnostics, a means of analyzing the makeup of an organism at the genetic level.

AdvertisementMolecular diagnostic tests tend to offer better sensitivity and specificity than their antibody-based counterparts, said Zarak Khurshid, a senior research analyst with Wedbush Securities. “the world appears to be moving in the direction of molecular tests,” he said.

So for Meridian to stay at the cutting edge of its industry and build the best products it can, the company’s push into molecular diagnostics must succeed.

“Illumigene is critically important to Meridian’s future — the reason being that the diagnostic space is fiercely competitive,” Khurshid said.

Thus far, Meridian has just one illumigene test on the market, for C. difficile, a bacterium that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. CEO Jack Kraeutler said in July that Meridian expects to begin selling a second illumigene test, for Group B Streptococcus, to international markets before the end of the year.

Kraeutler said at the time that the company had achieved 500 “placements” of the test, with 90 percent of those in the U.S. Those sales contributed $6 million in revenue in 2011. (Kraeutler didn’t return calls for this article.)

That performance is a little better than Khurshid had expected, though he warned the true test of the illumigene platform will be whether it can help Meridian regain market share it’s lost to competitors like Cepheid, Becton Dickinson and Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Cepheid, in particular, has bruised Meridian with a molecular C. difficile test that came on the market in 2009. Khurshid estimates that the Cepheid test has taken a 10 percent bite out of Meridian’s market share in each of the last two years.

If Meridian is going to succeed, it needs to turn that around quickly — and that’s among the company’s biggest looming challenges.

“the jury is still out as to whether illumigene will allow Meridian to take back some of its lost market share and whether they can develop additional tests on that platform to build a meaningful, high-growth franchise in molecular diagnostics,” Khurshid said.

KERA Health Checkup: Facts Behind Tuberculosis (TB) By Sam Baker, KERA Morning Edition Host (2011-10-17) DALLAS, TX (KERA) – naa

Students in Denton and Ellis counties have recently tested positive for tuberculosis. but TB isn’t unusual for North Texas. Dallas County, for instance, had 188 cases of the disease last year. In a KERA Health Checkup, Sam Baker talked with Dr. Garry Woo. He’s the Medical Director in charge of Tuberculosis Control for Dallas County Health Services. Dr. Garry Woo: Tuberculosis is a respiratory infection that’s transmitted from individual to individual through the air. It’s transmitted by coughing, singing, laughing. And this is due to the fact that the bacteria that lies in the hosts’ cases aerosolized in the air, and other people in the room are susceptible to this infection by breathing the air. Sam: how does one contract or develop the disease? Dr. Woo: it has to do with the length of your exposure to the individual, it has to do with your immune system, and it also has to do with the virulence of the organism. actually, there’s two forms of the disease: The latent or positive skin test form, and that’s characterized by positive skin tests, normal x-ray, no symptoms. And only ten percent of those people, in their lifetime, will progress to the active disease, which is characterized by cough, fever, weight loss. The second scenario, those are the individuals who are infectious to other people. Sam: is it curable? Dr. Woo: oh, the disease is easily preventable and curable. Individuals who have been exposed to the disease, who have a positive skin test, again normal chest x-ray, no symptoms, they can prevent progressing by taking nine months of isoniazid. Sam: A pill, we’re taking about? Dr. Woo: just one pill a day for nine months. We can provide it at no cost. Sam: Who’s most at risk? Dr. Woo: Children younger than five because of their immature immune system. Certainly older individuals who may be suffering from other medical illnesses. And, of course, the H.I.V. population. those people are susceptible to all infections. Sam: A reasonably healthy person has less to worry about, I would assume? Dr. Woo: Less to worry about, especially if they’ve had casual contact with the source case. For example just passing by, participating in an athletic event with this individual, saying hello – the risk would be very minimal. When we talk about prolonged contact, we’re talking about perhaps 40 to 80 hours over a two to three week period, someone that you would work closely with. Certainly we’d concentrate on individuals who actually live or work with the source case. Sam: Does anyone know, at this point, what is behind – for lack of a better word – this resurgence now? Dr. Woo: I would say this: What occurred in Ellis County, and of course, Ellis County is taking the lead in their geographic region, they had a higher number of cases. In 2010, they only had three cases. And by count, they have somewhere between eight and ten now. And, of course, they many not have the same resources Dallas County does. Sam: So, in the meantime, what can local officials do to fight against TB? Dr. Woo: What occurs, and it’s occurring in Ellis County, is you conduct a contact investigation around the source case. You look for secondary cases and individuals who have evidence of exposure to the disease. You would give them isoniazid to prevent and stop the spread of the illness. however, it takes time to come up with a list and it’s a fairly arduous process in that you would have to interview every individual. So, you have one source case, maybe eight to ten secondary cases, and you know, they’re interviewing household contacts, family contacts, work contacts, and, you know, who these people recreate with. That’s a lot of leg work, a lot of skin testing and, basically, plain Jane public health work. Sam: Sure, you really have to identify a case or suspect a case before the rest can go into effect? Dr. Woo: Precisely. Sam: how does North Texas compare to other areas of the state or to the country in terms of the number of TB cases? Dr. Woo: Texas is one of the top four states in the country for tuberculosis because of our proximity to the border. Sam: how does proximity to the border Dr. Woo: because of lack of health care, perhaps areas of high immigration, large urban areas where individuals are immuno-suppressed, any city that has a significant homeless population, any city that has a population of substance abuse problems – those are additional risk factors for the disease. An illness associated with tick bites and not seen in Delaware since 2003 has been confirmed in a Kent County man.  State Public Health officials say a 45 year old man is hospitalized with Tularemia – and responding to treatment.  Officials say the illness is not spread person to person, however domestic cats are very susceptible to tularemia and can transmit it to humans.

NEWS RELEASE:  DPH LAB IDENTIFIES FIRST CASE OF TULAREMIA SINCE 2003On Oct. 6, the Delaware Public Health Laboratory confirmed Delaware’s first case of tularemia since 2003, in a 45 year-old Kent County man. the man is hospitalized and responding to treatment. Although Delaware has not reported a case of tularemia in eight years, each year an estimated 125 to 150 cases are reported nationwide.

Tularemia is associated with tick bites and is not spread person to person. Domestic cats are very susceptible to tularemia and have been known to transmit the bacteria to humans. Humans can become infected by handling infected animal tissue when hunting or skinning infected rabbits, muskrats and other rodents; by inhaling dust or aerosols contaminated with the bacteria, such as during farming or landscaping activities, especially when tractors or mowers run over an infected animal or carcass. the disease can also be transmitted by drinking untreated water contaminated with the bacteria introduced by animal contact.

Symptoms of tularemia usually appear three to five days after exposure to the bacteria, but can take as long as 14 days. Symptoms may include: sudden fever, chills, headaches, diarrhea, muscle aches, joint pain, dry cough and progressive weakness. People can also develop pneumonia with chest pain, cough and difficulty breathing. Other symptoms of tularemia depend upon how the person was exposed. These symptoms can include ulcers on the skin or in the mouth, swollen and painful lymph glands, swollen and painful eyes and a sore throat.

Anyone exposed to tularemia should be treated as soon as possible since the disease can be fatal. Because the disease is difficult to diagnose, it is important to share with your health care provider any likely exposures, such as tick and deer fly bites, or contact with sick or dead animals. Blood tests and cultures can help confirm the diagnosis. Delaware laboratories and healthcare providers are required to report any diagnosed case of tularemia to the Division of Public Health’s Bureau of Epidemiology.“Preventing tick bites is the best way to protect yourself from tularemia,” said Dr. Karyl Rattay, DPH director. “Use insect repellent containing DEET on your skin, or treat clothing with repellent containing permethrin, to prevent insect bites.” In addition, use care and wear gloves when handling sick or dead animals. Be sure to cook food thoroughly and that your water is from a safe source. Many women live in pain not knowing that what they are experiencing is abnormal and they need to see a doctor immediately.

Here are some of the most common ‘gyne’ problems women should know about:

Sexually Transmitted Infections

Women can harbour Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) like chlamydia or gonorrhoea without even knowing it. Chlamydia in particular can lie dormant for years after you get infected.

Both infections frequently produce no symptoms in women. They quietly fester in the body causing havoc in the pelvis, leading to pelvic inflammatory disease and fertility problems.

The first sign of danger is when you have trouble conceiving and your damaged tubes are spotted when you’re being investigated for infertility.

You may succeed in getting pregnant but end up with an ectopic pregnancy.

You also risk passing on the infection to your unborn baby during delivery. the gonorrhoea causing bacteria can also cause gonoccocal arthritis.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

This is an infection of the fallopian tubes, ovaries and the adjacent organs. in many cases, the infection is due to either chlamydia and or gonorrhoea.

PID can also follow a miscarriage, a criminal abortion or childbirth. the classical symptoms of PID are fever and severe pelvic pain.

These symptoms can be missed if you keep going to the doctor about problems that appear unrelated to the PID, such as irregular periods, cystitis, frequent bouts of thrush or backache.

A quarter of the women not treated for PID will suffer from scarring of the affected organs causing infertility, chronic pelvic pain and ectopic pregnancies.

The combined oral contraceptive pill like Femiplan protects against PID.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the muscle of the uterus. They are especially common among black women who are three to nine times more likely to develop them. though genetic, the good news is that only 20 per cent of these women will develop symptoms and they shrink after menopause.

On the richter scale of women’s ‘gyne’ problems, fibroids are the equivalent of a minor quake.

Many women still have fibroids and have no problem conceiving.

In others, they cause heavy periods and may affect fertility, where due to their position in the uterus, they block the fallopian tubes or act like a contraceptive coil and thus prevent pregnancy.

The fibroids grow and can reach the size of a large melon causing backache, constipation, frequent urination and urinary tract infections, varicose veins and pain during sex.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

In this condition, the ovaries develop a mass of tiny cysts.the disease can also have nasty knock-on effects on your health. It increases your chances of becoming diabetic by seven times and of developing high blood pressure and heart disease three times more. It’s caused by an imbalance of testosterone, a male hormone.

The most obvious signs of the problem are acne, excessive hairiness and a deepening of the voice. sometimes the signs are not so obvious which makes it so hard to spot.

Many women suffer from no adverse effects at all. others only suffer mood swings and irritability which they put down to pre menstrual syndrome.

This condition causes painful, heavy periods but may be completely missed all together.

Endometriosis occurs when the lining of the womb, the endometrium grows in other parts of the pelvis including the bowel, ovaries, fallopian tubes and bladder.

Because it is the same tissue as the normal endometrium in the uterus, it responds to the hormonal changes and also bleeds causing pelvic irritation, inflammation and scarring of the tissues.

The women who are slowest to be diagnosed are those who don’t suffer from any unusual pain or bleeding and only discover it when they can’t conceive because it has involved the tubes.

Some women ignore warning signs like heavy periods, painful sex and or painful bowel movements because they think the pain they are experiencing is normal.

Keeping up to date with your pap smears will highlight precancerous cells and you can be treated even before you develop cervical cancer, the leading cause of death due to cancer in women in Kenya.

Ovarian cancer on the other hand is difficult to diagnose because it has no symptoms until it’s in an advanced stage. the space in the pelvis gives the cancer room to grow unnoticed until it’s causing extreme pain and swelling. There a genetic predisposition to it especially for women in whom a close family member has suffered from cancer of the bowel, breast or ovary.

Vaginal and vulval cancer are thought to be ‘old women’ cancers. They are rare below the age of 60.

However it is not unknown for these cancers to occur in younger women as well so it’s always important to take notice of any unusual symptoms.

A sore and itchy lump may indicate cancer of the vulva. an unusual, growth, bleeding or unusual discharge can be a warning of vaginal cancer

yet many women are to embarrassed to see a doctor.

Endometrial cancer — (cancer of the womb) the easiest gyne cancer to identify — which produces early warning bleeding in women who’ve had their menopause, can be missed. This cancer is completely treatable if caught early.

The combined oral contraceptive pill is also protective against cancer of the ovary and womb.

The symptoms are the same. The only difference is the age group affected. H1N1 is targeting younger people than the seasonal flu. Usually the seasonal flu seriously affects old people. H1N1 is affecting young people.

Veggies are strange too, animal waste in irrigation water, factory foods/processed foods, imported foods, wow, not even water is safe unless you boil it. If you read every report about food processing, you wouldn't have time to eat or worry about it.

I have spring and summer allergies and they are in full force.
