Additional cases of whooping cough have been identified in Alamance County since health officials announced earlier this week that the state lab confirmed that three children at B. Everett Jordan Elementary have the bacterial infection.

While there is no need to verify additional cases with the state lab, there are four other cases that are considered “confirmed” because the people had symptoms and have been in contact with one of the children originally tested. There are another nine people who have symptoms and those are considered “probable cases,” said Dr. Kathleen Shapley-Quinn, medical director at the Alamance County Health Department.

All the reported cases are linked to B. Everett Jordan Elementary School. The parents of all the children who attend the school along with staff have all been contacted by the health department and offered a preventative antibiotic.

“What we are doing now is reviewing all the information we have gathered talking to 560 children’s parents to see if there are other children affected,” Shapley-Quinn said.

Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is a bacterial infection that starts with typical cold symptoms and in one to two weeks develops into prolonged bursts of coughing with a “whooping noise” at the end. while the infection is rarely a cause of serious disease or hospitalization in school-age children and adults, it can be dangerous to babies younger than 12 months.

“We are really focused on keeping babies from getting pertussis,” Shapley-Quinn said. 

While most babies are vaccinated against pertussis along with all public school children before they start kindergarten, the vaccine isn’t foolproof. It’s 88 percent effective, Shapley-Quinn said.

“That means 12 children of every 100 are at risk,” she said. “The vaccine isn’t perfect.”

Health officials recommend that if a child develops symptoms — runny nose, cough and low-grade fever — that child should be taken to the doctor for an evaluation. Pertussis is most contagious before the coughing starts.

While a preventative antibiotic is being offered to staff and children at B. Everett Jordan Elementary, the best way to prevent the disease is through a Tdap vaccination, which prevents tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis. In 2008, state law required that all sixth-graders receive a Tdap booster shot.

There are several possible causes. The organisms that may cause bacterial P are Escherichia coli, Enterococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumonia and Staphylococcus aureus.

It can also be caused by sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Trichomonas, Syphilis and other STDs.

It can occur with an infection in and around the testicles, especially if the infection originated from an STD. Symptoms may include:

Low back pain

Pain during urination

Burning during urination

Pain while have a bowel movement

Urinary retention (can’t completely empty the bladder)

Pain with ejaculation

Pain in the area of the anus and the genitals

Blood in the semen

Foul odor to the urine

Frequency or urgent need to urinate

Diagnostic evaluations

Your doctor will do a physical examination; he/she will look for signs of prostatitis. The signs that you might have are:

You may have a discharge from your urethra

You may have enlarged lymph nodes in your groin

You may be tender in the area of your scrotum

You may be tender in the area of your rectum

You may have tenderness in the area of your prostate

Your doctor will ask you to give a urine sample for a culture and sensitivity. Your doctor will also order a routine urinalysis. if there is a discharge coming from the prostate, the doctor may choose to do a culture and sensitivity test on it to look for increased bacteria and white blood cells.

Your doctor will send you to the lab or a nurse can take a blood sample from you in the office for a complete blood count (CBC) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA).

Most cases can be successfully treated with antibiotics, and lifestyle changes. The lifestyle changes would include making changes in your diet and activity. Antibiotics such as tetracycline, doxycycline, sulfamethoxazole and others may be prescribed to treat bacterial P. if prostatitis is caused by an STD an antibiotic such as ceftriaxone and doxycycline may be given. in severe cases caused by an STD infection, then you may need to be hospitalized for medications to be given piggy back with IV fluids.

Sometimes, men with prostatitis may have difficulty emptying the bladder. if you have urgency and cannot void, your doctor may suggest that you have a suprapubic (inserted in the bladder through the pubic region and not the penis) catheter until your infection is under control. if you have pain , you may find relief by sitting in a warm bath or sitz bath. Sitting in a warm bathtub will help relieve the backache associated with prostate pain.

Dunmang CPS, Zhemgang – An 11-year old student of Dunmang school, Zhemgang, died of suspected kidney inflammation on December 6.

Four others are recovering in Yebilaptsa hospital.

Doctors call it acute glomerulonephritis, a bacterial infection.

The class III student from Kamjong village, died at home, complaining of headache and swelling of face and stomach.

Yebilaptsa hospital assistant clinical officer Uttam Sherpa said the students, between 13 and 14 years, were brought to the hospital on December 7. They were suffering from similar symptoms.

"Laboratory investigations revealed high presence of protein in the patients' urine," Uttam Sherpa said.

He said all patients had a history of consuming beef from dead cattle that died of black quarter disease.

School principal Bhim Bahadur Subba, said the first incidence of the disease was reported on November 23. "We didn't take it seriously, thinking the child had allergy," he said.

But, on November 30, two other children complained of the same disease. About three were infected last week.

Though health and livestock officials are still investigating, villagers suspect the infected meat caused the outbreak.

A 50-year old man from Kamjong said the disease outbreak surfaced two months ago, where about 20 cattle died in the locality. "My child was infected after eating the meat," the father of three, who is in Yebilaptsa attending to his son, said.

Meanwhile, on His Majesty's command, two officials from the regional welfare office in Bumthang arrived in Zhemgang to offer semso and collect first hand information last night.
