Rubery youngster’s mum to scale the great Wall in his memory

THE mother of a Rubery youngster who tragically died from a blood condition is taking part in a charity trek across the great Wall of China in his memory.

Sue Evans will be doing the trek next may in memory of her son Owen Evans.

Owen was a very active boy, going out on his motocross bike, and was a yellow belt in karate with plans to become a black belt by the time he was 13.

After becoming ill, in August 2010, he was diagnosed with a Hepatitis virus. He was treated at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital for four weeks, but within two weeks of being discharged he was readmitted with a low blood count.

Owen was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia, which is bone marrow failure which leads to serious symptoms, the only real cure being a transplant.

Owen bravely went through biopsy and transfusion operations but the nine-year-old devastatingly lost his battle, dying in his mum’s arms on November 16, 2010.

On may 12, team Owen will scale the great Wall of China, as they attempt to raise £10,000 for the Aplastic Anaemia Trust.

The team includes Paul Freear, headteacher at Beaconside Primary School in Rubery, the school where Owen was a pupil, and family friend Alexia Sutton.

Sue Evans said: “Owen never got the opportunity to make his mark on the world and I think this trek is a fitting tribute to my little boy who had such a passion for life and adventure.

“Team Owen’s aim is to raise awareness of this terrible bone marrow disease. With funding and research we can save another child and family from going through this devastating ordeal.”
