a RETIRED businessman has paid tribute to staff at Wycombe Hospital who treated him for prostate cancer, and urged other pensioners to get themselves checked out.

Anthony Calladine, 66, was shocked to be diagnosed with the disease after taking a blood test on the advice of a friend.

He had no symptoms and had never even been to hospital before.

Wycombe Hospital has a specialist urology ward and after a ‘speedy and efficient’ series of tests , including a biopsy, ultrasound and bone scan, Mr Calladine, of new Road, High Wycombe, had his prostate removed last month.

He said: “I want to pay tribute to the consultant, Mr John Kelleher, and all the doctors and nurses who were exceptional in their duties.

“It’s not an easy department to work in and they’ve all got my sincerest respect.”

“Prostate cancer is a killer because many people are reluctant to take a test. I want to try and get people to do what I did.

“Please take my advice and have a blood test…it does not hurt or cost anything but if you don’t bother very serious problems can occur.”

I was diagnosed with STD trich which I have mess for but I took blood test for other stds how soon should I know I just took the test yesterday. also when should I have symptoms of it if I do have it?

If you suspect a possibility of you getting HIV via sexual intercourse or needle puncture, it is protocol to wait at least 6 months before testing, or else the blood test may yield a false negative. Testing usually takes a few days.

Here, it takes about 3 days.

So I had all the symptoms of lyme disease, and noticed the bulls-eye rash on the back of my knee. I went to a doctor and got a blood test taken for lyme. I got antibiotics for lyme. the next day I had an especially bad fever, so the next morning my parents brought me to a lyme specialist, who said he was sure I must have lyme based on what I was describing as symptoms, and looking at my rash.

I got the blood tests back today and they were negative! I know that the tests can be wrong, but is it possible that there is some other disease that could be giving me the bulls eye rash and lyme symptoms? thanks.

No. Lyme is the only thing that causes a bull's eye rash. Here's a good article that talks about the unreliability of Lab tests for Lyme. canlyme.com/labtests.html. It's a little technical. but I think you'll get the gist of it. do your doctor a favor and give him a copy of it. In medicine, you never stop learning. So keep taking those antibiotics and make sure you finish them.

There are a 2 or 3 different types of tests for lyme. maybe you should have a different kind. Hope you didn't stop your antibiotics, just in case the test was wrong.

I took a home pregnancy test yesterday because it was the fifth day of my missed period. my test came out positive but I started my period very light like but still there. I've been having pregnancy symptoms like crazy. Swore boobs food craving nausea swollen fingers irration stuff like that I took another test this morning and it said negative. Could I be pregnant or not? is it possible?

It's implantation bleeding if anything. But, some woman like the other person stated can have light spotting during their pregnancy, but tell the doc you got a + pregnancy test and have spotting.

That was not your period. You are indeed pregnant. Spotting is normal many women mistake it for a period. Once you got a positive it means your pregnant.

My son was put on steroids after being diagnosed with bells palsy. since he was bite by a deer tick 5 months before any symptoms I am worried he has lyme disease. the blood test was completed and came out negitive. Could the steroids have caused a false negitive?

The most common blood tests for Lyme aren't actually for Lyme itself. They look for antibodies to Lyme. Steroids suppress the immune system, so the body doesn't produce antibodies–hence, a negative test, even though the person may actually have Lyme disease.

That's only one of the reasons you might get a false negative response. there are others, too.

Bell's Palsy can exist without it being Lyme, but Lyme often presents with Bell's Palsy. So, if you son has Bell's Palsy, that's a good reason to thoroughly look at the possibility of Lyme, even with that negative test.

There is absolutely NO test that can rule out Lyme. the tests are awful. Researchers have found that these tests miss 35 to even 50% of culture-positive Lyme disease cases, depending on what study you read.

Steroids are a NO NO with Lyme and that's how many of us get worse who finally find the Lyme diagnosis… if you suspect Lyme, make sure you make an appt with an LLMD, only one in La.. all the testing except a SMALL handful of labs int he courntry are completely inaccurate, the Western Blot by preferrably IGENEX is needed. there are over 300 strains inthe world and 100 + in N America.. the standard tests only use about TEN strains and many are from Europe which is not acceptable.. Even the testing is only 65% accurate in sensitivtiy- again , unacceptable.. anything from steroids down to regular/occasional TYLENOL use can give false NEGATIVES and that's why lyme has to be based on a clinical diagnosis- most of us have our bodies messed up with meds given in error (esp steroids) and by the time we do get the right test, alot are falsly negative… Meds, CMV EBV Mono, etc can all alter the test.. let me know if you have any questions.. Sometimes my spelling is off/lyme brain but the knowledge is there.. be your own and his own advocate. the best of docs won't know this unless Lyme literate.. Trust me! It's everywhere, mosquitoes, fleas, not just ticks. Heck they have even found the bacteria in DUST…

for example if you are not sure weather or not this wound is rabies infected and you go to the doctor because it has been years for the wound to cure. will the doctors know that you are infected of rabies when symptoms have not appear. if so how would they do that?

There is no way that rabies takes more than a year to manifest itself with symptoms, Although know that rabies is only treatable BEFORE the symptoms show.

A blood test would show that you had contracted the rabies virus.

Can anyone relate to this? I have many of the classic symptoms of hypothyroidism but I don't have low thyroid. I just got the call that my blood test showed normal. I have been living with these awful symptoms for two years now, what do I do now?

hypothyroidism mimics obesity and depression.those things need to be taken care of.improve ur lifestyle.

It means that your thyroid is not always functioning properly, and that it is eventually not going to be functioning. Continue to go back to your doctor every 3-6 months an request further blood tests

I had the symptoms also but my test was normal,turns out I have poly-cystic ovarian syndrome(pcos) ask your Dr to refer you to a Gynecologist just to be checked.

they should recheck it again, and again. i had the same thing happen, and had a test that came back normal, then one that was abnormal, then another abnormal, then again a normal one. so….sometimes, things are out of whack one day and not another.

Some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism are puffiness, fatigue, hair loss, water retention (hands and feet), memory loss, fibromyalgia.

Without getting too clinical, if your TSH is normal, I would suggest having your hormone levels checked. Fluctuations hormones also manifest similar symptoms. Other endocrine problems should be ruled out, as well. a battery of tests including lymphoma is also performed routinely nowadays, so I suggest having that done.

I am not sure your age group, but it is highly likely that your condition is benign. sometimes, depression, stress, anxiety may cause some of the above smptoms.

You need to see an endocrinologist and be checked for Cushing's and PCOS – two diseases that can mimic the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

You also need to get the exact levels of your TSH. Some offices have different ranges for normal, and different people feel different at different ranges – for example, my mom had a TSH of 80 and felt only mildly lethargic, whereas some people might have a TSH of 4 and feel like they're going to die. You need to obtain those test results and get tested several more times.

Only women can be tested and/or vaccinated from HPV.
There are many different kinds of HPV.
It is very common and can be transmitted even when using condoms during sexual intercourse.
It can even be passed on through oral sex, and can lead to throat cancer.
Some variations have few/no symptoms while others can lead to genital warts.
The vaccine (for women only) can prevent the HPV virus from developing and resulting in symptoms and even cancer (if you have a mild form of HPV), and will prevent the acquisition of other forms of HPV.
If you are a guy and aren't sure whether you have it, the only way to confirm this, is to get your partner to get tested.
HPV is permanent an incurable. Prevention is the best way to avoid HPV.

Most people with HPV have no symptoms, but when there are symptoms they include warts and itchiness and color change in skin.

There is a way to test for HPV antibodies in your blood, but this test is exclusively performed in HPV vaccine clincal trials. If you doctor orders conprehensive blood tests, there will no HPV performed. in fact, if you ask your doctor for an HPV blood test, your doctor will most likely tell you that no such test exists.

There is actually no way to reliably determine that anyone is free of HPV.

There also is no blood test that can determine whether you have cancer.

Men can be immunised againse HPV because they can get it just like women do. in men the symptoms are few apart from genital warts. Blood tests are not useful for detecting HPV. Blood test are very poor at diagnosing cancer, some cancers have markers in the blood ,these are useful for following treatment not for diagnosis.
