My friend is having trouble getting a diagnosis because of the city she lives in, and she is currently in the hospital.

Her symptoms: High fever, dizzy, racing heart, coughing, severe headaches, constant throbbing "all over", increased need for sleep, and feels as though she will pass out at any given moment.
Can someone figure out the illness?

I can't really describe much of anything else because she lives awhile away from me, and this is all she has mentioned, but hopefully it'll start somewhere!

The dizziness and fatigue, accompanied by a racing heart are all symptoms of a cardiac ailment, such as an arrhythmia. She has probably had an EKG, and if that was normal, she may need further cardiac testing, such as an Echocardiogram or stress test. The coughing and fever point to a bacterial or viral infection, possibly originating in the lungs. I assume that she has probably had a chest x-ray since she is in the hospital. The doctors are probably trying to narrow it down from a list of infections with blood tests.

Surely the hospital will do blood work to check for lots of things. these symptoms could be from any number of health problems but they need to check her for the following (although the high temp is a sure sign of an infection somewhere)
1) H1N1 (or general flu)
2) Lyme disease (was or has she been outdoors a lot?)
3) Diabetes
4) Thyroid
Or any other numerous conditions that could have these symptoms but, like I said, the high temp is a sign of some type of infection!

sounds exactly like me, however i have a few more symptoms, but it sounds like anxiety, it's really horrible

6 months ago a did some blood work to see how things looked in there. I've been on a drinking binge for years up to that point. they said my triglyceride level was too high (462) and I was at risk for panreatitis. Being the drunk that I was I continued drinking and had this funny pain, but mild in my abdominal area. I looked up symptoms for pancreatitis and noticed I experienced some in the past, such as feeling nasuas in the morning, stincky poo, once I remember feeling sore in the abdominal area at one other time, but I never had any serious pain. well I quit my old ways, but after a few weeks I started drinking occasionally, about once a week or two and never more than 3 or 4 beers. for the first time in my life I've been able to control my drinking, simply out of this great fear that if I kept up my ways, I would eventually be hospitalized. well in this past half year I haven't had any of those symptoms, but I'm afraid those 3 or 4 beers once every week or two will still screw me over one day. I don't wanna quit completely, I think this fear will continue to control my ways, but what do you think? does this sound serious enough to where I should quit completely?

Current methods used to diagnose and treat Lyme disease preventsome patients from receiving necessary treatment, said onetick-borne disease researcher.

Tom Grier, from Duluth, Minn., a biology and chemistry graduatefrom the University of Minnesota, spoke Saturday morning at theWinona Public Library about methods used to test for the diseaseand treatment guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention and the Infectious Disease Society of America.

“Everything is in place to create a disease that’s hard totreat,” Grier said.

Lyme patients should be diagnosed and receive treatment based onsymptoms, not on blood-work results, Grier said.

“We’d be better off if there had never been a test,” hesaid.

The blood tests used are problematic because they detectantibodies produced by a body’s immune system, not the bacteriathat causes the disease, Grier said. within the first four to sixweeks of infection, patients won’t test positive for the diseasebecause not enough antibodies are produced, he said.

As the disease progresses, Grier said, bacteria moves out of thebloodstream and into a person’s tissues. Antibodies can no longerbe detected at that point, rendering the tests useless, hesaid.

Patients would be better served if physicians focused on Lymesymptoms and did away with blood work, Grier said.

For many Grier’s more than 25 audience members, his presentationhit home.

Doctors diagnosed Sharon Kirkpatrick with the disease 20 yearsago. her husband was infected 14 years later. both have battled thedisease since they were diagnosed, she said.

IDSA guidelines now prevent Kirkpatrick and her husband fromreceiving treatment at Winona Health specifically for Lyme disease.Previously, they said they’d been receiving antibiotics in the pastto control the disease.

“I’m just getting sicker,” Kirkpatrick said.

Physicians at Winona Health voted in October to not treatpatients who may have symptoms similar to Lyme disease, but don’tmeet the criteria, as if they have the disease. Winona Health optedto treat patients with the disease only if they meet the guidelinesset by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and theInfectious Disease Society of America, according to an internalmemo obtained by the Daily News. many other regional health centersalso follow the same guidelines.

The health experts say Lyme disease patients should be treatedwith antibiotics for about a month and that longer treatments putpatients at risk. In April, the IDSA released results of afour-year review into its own standards for treatment that showextended treatment with antibiotics can cause dangerous healthcomplications, like blood infection, diarrhea and other drugreactions.

But some Lyme disease patients say the affliction haslong-lasting effects. they want the health groups to adopt abroader definition of the disease that recognizes antibiotics as anacceptable treatment, even years after an initial diagnosis.Opponents say the guidelines ignore the complexity of tick-borneillnesses and discount a number of people who suffer ongoingsymptoms.

Winona Health issued a one-paragraph e-mail response in Decemberto its adopted guidelines:

“Winona Health considers the diagnosis and treatment of LymeDisease a serious and important topic,” the statement read. “As wehave done with a number of medical conditions, we supportevidence-based research and protocols which are the establishedstandard of care.”

Kirkpatrick said she believes the disease has attacked thetissue in her husband’s brain and caused severe dementia.

“He only knows he was once a teacher because I tell him he was,”she said.

Kirkpatrick said she is fearful that without antibiotics, herdisease will progress in a fashion similar to her husband’sillness.

“There’s an agenda out there to prevent antibiotics from beingoverused,” Grier said, “and it’s affecting the treatment ofpatients.”

My dog was outside and when he crossed the threshold to come back inside his back arched really high, he started shaking, and his legs were folded up and we're almost paralyzed looking (he could not walk). his upper body was normal and so was his face and expression. The vet thinks he possibly had a seizure but my dog was coherent while exhibiting these symptoms and he wasn't drooling or unresponsive. The shaking/paralyzed legs only lasted around two minutes and then he was back to his normal, playful self. has this happened to anyone else's pet before? Thank you for your help!

Yes, it surely could have been a seizure. .They can escalate or increase in number and severity.
Medications can control seizures & the animal should be monitored.
Other animals may become alarmed and it can promote an attack.
It doesn't state how old your animal is,any recent injuries etc.
Should this happen again, get to a vet asap for evaluation.

Definitely sounds like a seizure. Maybe a localized seizure that only encompassed the back end. have the vet do some blood work if it happens again. It could get worse, so be prepared.

It could have been a seizure, but it could also have been a stroke or some sort of poisoning. take him to another vet for a second opinion.

Most STD's do not present with symptoms. some common ones are iching, burning, redness, odor, discharge. you should always go in for a routine check up if your not sure.

Im not sure about symptoms surfacing, but if you go to the doctor to get blood work done for STD testing they say to do it at least 6 months after your most recent partner, because all STDs surface within 6 months, but Im not too sure for the ones that have no symptoms. I would advice calling a doctor or a telehealth line for all the complete details, or even do some online searches to find out.

WILLINGBORO — Marcus Randolph has a new lease on life.

And it’s thanks to his wife, Trisha, his teenage sweetheart and mother of his son Marcus Jr., 8, and 8-month-old daughter Tristen.

He now walks around with her left kidney keeping him alive.

“She gave me a good kidney, she may have even given me the better one,” he joked. “For me, it’s like I’ve got a whole new beginning. she basically gave me a new beginning; an extra life.”

He quipped he feels like a character from the Super Mario Brothers video game that just got a one of the mushrooms that gives another life.

Three years ago, the now 29-year-old visited a doctor for what he thought would be a standard check-up. It was Trisha who urged him to go. she felt since they were getting older, he should get a look over.

“Just to start the New Year off,” he said of the visit. “I was going just to go.”Within a few weeks, his life was turned upside down.

Levels on some of his blood work indicted a problem with his kidney function. He was soon diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, a kidney disease in which scarring of the organs occurs, preventing them from filtering blood properly.

According to the University of North Carolina’s Kidney Center, those who suffer from the disease often experience no symptoms. Randolph was one of those.

An athlete who played football and baseball when he was younger, he never had any health issues. As he toured all over the United States and around the world as the drummer with Robert Randolph and the Family Band, he was always the picture of health.

The condition changed that picture.

In 2008, he started dialysis for about a month and when that seemed to stabilize his vitals, he was treated with medicine. the steroids changed his appearance, causing bloating, Trisha Randolph said.

“When I got on dialysis, it did set in,” he said. “(Dialysis) drained me. I didn’t want to be there. It just made me weak and got me down. I’m looking around like ‘Wow, what I am doing here?’ ”

All the while, his wife suffered along with him. the two, who met at age 17 and 18 at a dry cleaner bsuiness, moved to Willingboro five years ago. Both are originally from Irvington, Essex County.

“It has been the hardest time of my life,” Trisha Randolph said. “It’s like a ton of bricks hit me.”

Her husband’s condition was treated with medicine for two years. He remained on tour with his band, which he formed 10 years ago with his cousins, Robert Randolph and Danyel Morgan.

The well-established band, which he terms as “funk with a gospel rock twist,” has released a live and three studio albums. Their latest, “We Walk this Road,” released in June 2010, was produced by T-Bone Burnett.

The band has toured with such notable acts as Eric Clapton, B.B. King, the Dave Matthews Band, Santana, the Black Crowes, and Al Green.

“It’s always good to have an occupation you like and love to do,” he said. “There is no greater feeling than being able to play in front of thousands of people.”

During a tour stop at the House of Blues in New Orleans last September, Randolph noticed he wasn’t feeling well.

“I just felt sick,” he said. “I was throwing up. I couldn’t hold food down.”

He decided to fly home and try to “sleep it off.” His wife and mother, Sylvia, were having none of it. they made him go to the hospital.

“My blood pressure was like 206 over 114. It was bad, just a crazy number,” he said.

He learned he was in full renal failure and needed to start dialysis again. He started four months of dialysis on Sept. 9 and by December, his name was put on a kidney transplant list.

“My wife was the first person to step up,” he said.

She said she had a feeling they would be a match.

“I just always had that in my mind,” she said. “I prayed a lot to be a match. He is just this great spirit. I just wanted to see him not have to worry about his illness.”

Marcus Randolph feels fate set in when they met and their “love story” began, and not just because he now carries an organ of hers in him.

“We’re definitely meant to be,” he said. “I’m so thankful and glad I met her. she is a great wife and a great mom.”

During preparations for transplant surgery on Jan. 25 at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, Trisha Randolph was told the procedure would be harder on her.

She admits recovery has been tough and that she is just now starting to feel her normal self again. but, that is no matter.

“I am definitely relieved, it’s like a huge weight has been lifted,” she said.

Through it all, their faith sustained them, the couple said.

“We are a very spiritual family,” Trisha Randolph said. “We know God. He has strengthened me to get me through.”

The last few years were difficult on Marcus Jr., the couple said. Their father-son bond is tight and through it all, Marcus Randolph has tried to continue going to the all of the youngster’s sporting and school events.

“It’s through the grace of God that things worked out,” he said. “We’ve got to give thanks to God.”

Moving forward, he will need to make trips to the doctor twice a week for a bit longer, watch his diet closely and take medication to fight off rejection. He will need to be medicated for life.

None of that bothers him.

“Now, I’ve got a fresh kidney and no more dialysis and am just happy,” he said.

His mother and Trisha’s mom, Fay Gayle, have helped with the kids and duties around the house. Things are starting to get back to normal now. Marcus

Randolph hopes to be back on the road with the band in may, with his new outlook on life intact.

“Everything I do, I am going to go hard and make sure my family is stable,” he said. “I feel it’s over now and we can move on with our lives.”

I was diagnosed with anxiety about 2 years ago and recently i have been under lots of stress and been feeling weird symptoms. I have done blood work and everything is fine.
I am worrying i might have a brain tumor even though there is no cancer in my family. I have been reading the symptoms are so identical.

You were diagnosed with anxiety (disorder?) but what have you done about it since then? are you seeing a therapist? are you on anxiolytics? Anxiety can do odd things to a person. with the help of a competent therapist, either LCSW or pshychologist, you can identify the sources of your anxiety, the triggers and learn the techniques to control it. Finding a therapist should be your first priority.

Odds are you are just fine, your fear of having a brain tumor is probably whats causing your anxiety/panic attacks… Many people who start thinking they have a disease cause anxiety in theirselves, and nothing is physically wrong with them… P.S. stay off the internet for med. advice, you'll think you need an amputation for an ingrown toenail if you keep looking at stuff too long, you'll make yourself crazy

I am a 19 year old male and about a week and a half ago i started getting dizzy and having diarrhea. it hasnt stopped since. I get dizzy at all times of the day. any hints as to what it could be?

Did the diarrhea start first? U may be dehydrated, Sound like a virus or some kind of food poisoning .if U can go get some blood work done, if you have an HMO Insist they do blood work rite now or they will send U home to die saying "come back if there is no improvement"

well it sounds like stomach flu…. you should go visit a doctor and get some prescriptions…..

About a week ago I had a pain in my abdomen, it wasn't that bad of a pain, but it was noticeable so I went to the ER. after pushing around on my stomach the doctor said he thought it was a pulled muscle, but would wait until my blood work came back to be sure. sure enough my blood showed slightly elevated levels of lipase (level was 150) and so I was diagnosed with a mild case of acute pancreatitis. I later got a CT which showed a mild inflammation of the tail of my pancreas. The next day I had an ultrasound and everything including my pancreas looked normal, no inflammation. they do not know the cause but they say it could have been that I drank excessively during a graduation party 4 days prior. my question is it normal for pancreatitis brought on by a weekend of drinking to take 4 days to show symptoms (ie abdominal tenderness)? again the pain was mild and only felt when I laughed or coughed. also my doctor said that I can only drink one beer at a time now for the rest of my life…I'm 26 years old.
