Going a fairway to help charity

a NEWPORT man took on a dawn til dusk golf challenge in memory of his wife who died just 23 days after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Phillip Mitchell, 64, completed the 14-hour fundraiser at Caerleon Golf Club on Sunday to raise money for the Eve Appeal, which researches gynaecological cancer.

during the marathon game Mr Mitchell played 72 holes with two birdies without taking a break or leaving the green. Although he played on his own, friends brought him supplies during the 14 hours.

Mr Mitchell, of Ringland, decided to take on the challenge in tribute to his wife Dawn who died ten days before her 50th birthday on January 3 this year.

mrs Mitchell was diagnosed with ovarian cancer just 23 days before, having shown no obvious symptoms of the disease.

He said: “It’s my way of putting something back into helping research to try and stop somebody else suffering the way Dawn did and the rest of the family.”

Security officer Mr Mitchell described his wife as being full of life and fun and said she was well respected by everyone.

the father-of-one to Ceri Periam, 35, hopes to raise £1,000 from the challenge as well as raising awareness of the disease.
