March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and the Centers for Disease Control and Management (CDC) estimates that as many as sixty percent of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented if all men and women aged 50 years or older were screened routinely.

Cancer of the colon or rectum, referred to as colorectal cancer, is the 2nd highest cause of death for men and women in the United States. however, when found early through screening, it is highly curable and in many cases preventable. because colorectal cancer can have no symptoms in the early stages, the key to detection is through screening beginning at age 50 and repeated every 5 to 10 years as directed by your physician. Earlier screening may be advised if you have a history of inflammatory bowel disease or a family history of polyps or colorectal cancer. In females a history of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, or polyps in themselves or family members is also a reason to start screenings earlier than age 50. Colorectal cancer often begins as polyps or benign growths in the surface of the colon and removing these polyps early prevents them from becoming cancerous.

Symptoms that may indicate later stage cancer can include rectal bleeding, stomach pain or change in bowel habits resulting in constipation or diarrhea. these symptoms should be reported to your physician immediately.

The best type of screening is a colonoscopy. This is a painless procedure that may take place on an outpatient basis, and does not take a large amount of time. A light anesthesia is used, and a tiny camera is sent through the colon where it can detect abnormalities and polyps. If polyps are found, they can be removed at this time without difficulty. the scope, in which the camera is attached, also has a small loop that is placed around the polyp to remove it by shaving it off the lining of the colon. the polyp is sent to a lab for biopsy, which will reveal if it is cancerous or benign. It is important to know that benign polyps may turn cancerous if not detected and removed early.

A virtual colonoscopy uses CT scan images to construct a 3-D model of the colon. It can detect polyps, tumors and other abnormalities just as a colonoscopy using a camera does. the main drawback is that if a polyp is found, even a small one, a colonoscopy will then be needed to remove and evaluate the polyp.

X-rays of the colon can also be performed using barium as a contrast agent. the barium is inserted through an enema and must be held in the colon until the x-rays are completed. again if any polyps, tumors or abnormalities are found, a colonoscopy must be done to remove and evaluate the polyp.

The CDC encourages that colorectal cancer survival rates are high when detected early.

The American Cancer Society recommends regular physical activity and exercise along with achieving and maintaining a healthy weight and, while not conclusive, some medical experts recommend a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fruits, vegetables and grains in order to reduce risk. This type of diet, according to the CDC, may reduce the risk of other chronic conditions as well, such as coronary artery disease or diabetes.

Taking these steps along with routine colonoscopy screening, may reduce your odds of developing colorectal cancer. Talk with your doctor soon about this simple yet effective evaluation.

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and accounted for 7.6 million deaths (around 13% of all deaths) in 2008. 1 ? Tobacco use is a major risk factor for cancer. harmful alcohol use, poor diet and physical inactivity are other main risk factors. ? Certain infections cause up to 20% of cancer deaths in low- and middle-income countries and 9% of cancer deaths in high-income countries.? More than 30% of cancer deaths can be prevented.? Cancer arises from a change in one single cell. The change may be started by external agents and inherited genetic factors.? Deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue to rise to over 11 million in 2030. Cancer is a generic term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body. Other terms used are malignant tumours and neoplasms. One defining feature of cancer is the rapid creation of abnormal cells that grow beyond their usual boundaries, and which can then invade adjoining parts of the body and spread to other organs. this process is referred to as metastasis. Metastases are the major cause of death from cancer. The problemCancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and accounted for 7.6 million deaths (around 13% of all deaths) in 2008. The main types of cancer are:? lung (1.4 million deaths)? stomach (740 000 deaths)? liver (700 000 deaths)? colorectal (610 000 deaths)? breast (460 000 deaths). more than 70% of all cancer deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue to rise to over 11 million in 2030.What causes cancer?Cancer arises from one single cell. The transformation from a normal cell into a tumour cell is a multistage process, typically a progression from a pre-cancerous lesion to malignant tumours. These changes are the result of the interaction between a person?s genetic factors and three categories of external agents, including: ? physical carcinogens, such as ultraviolet and ionizing radiation; ? chemical carcinogens, such as asbestos, components of tobacco smoke, aflatoxin (a food contaminant) and arsenic (a drinking water contaminant); and? biological carcinogens, such as infections from certain viruses, bacteria or parasites.Ageing is another fundamental factor for the development of cancer. The incidence of cancer rises dramatically with age, most likely due to a build up of risks for specific cancers that increase with age. The overall risk accumulation is combined with the tendency for cellular repair mechanisms to be less effective as a person grows older.Risk factors for cancersTobacco use, alcohol use, unhealthy diet, and chronic infections from hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and some types of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) are leading risk factors for cancer in low- and middle-income countries. Cervical cancer, which is caused by HPV, is a leading cause of cancer death among women in low-income countries. How can the burden of cancer be reduced?Knowledge about the causes of cancer, and interventions to prevent and manage the disease is extensive. Cancer can be reduced and controlled by implementing evidence-based strategies for cancer prevention, early detection of cancer and management of patients with cancer.Modifying and avoiding risk factorsMore than 30% of cancer could be prevented by modifying or avoiding key risk factors, including: ? tobacco use ? being overweight or obese? low fruit and vegetable intake? physical inactivity? alcohol use? sexually transmitted HPV-infection? urban air pollution? indoor smoke from household use of solid fuels.Prevention strategies? Increase avoidance of the risk factors listed above.? Vaccinate against human papilloma virus (HPV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV).? Control occupational hazards.? Reduce exposure to sunlight.Early detectionCancer mortality can be reduced if cases are detected and treated early. there are two components of early detection efforts: Early diagnosisThe awareness of early signs and symptoms (such as cervical, breast and oral cancers) in order to facilitate diagnosis and treatment before the disease becomes advanced is important. Early diagnosis programmes are particularly relevant in low-resource settings where the majority of patients are diagnosed in very late stages. ScreeningThe systematic application of a screening test in an asymptomatic population, it aims to identify individuals with abnormalities suggestive of a specific cancer or pre-cancer and refer them promptly for diagnosis and treatment. Screening programmes are especially effective for frequent cancer types that have a screening test that is cost-effective, affordable, acceptable and accessible to the majority of the population at risk.Examples of screening methods are: ? visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) for cervical cancer in low-resource settings; ? PAP test for cervical cancer in middle- and high-income settings;? mammography screening for breast cancer in high-income settings.Treatment Treatment is the series of interventions, including psychosocial support, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy that is aimed at curing the disease or considerably prolonging life while improving the patient?s quality of life.Treatment of early detectable cancersSome of the most common cancer types, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, oral cancer and colorectal cancer have higher cure rates when detected early and treated according to best practices.Treatment of other cancers with potential for cureSome cancer types, even though disseminated, such as leukemias and lymphomas in children, and testicular seminoma, have high cure rates if appropriate treatment is provided.Palliative carePalliative care is treatment to relieve, rather than cure, symptoms caused by cancer. Palliative care can help people live more comfortably; it is an urgent humanitarian need for people worldwide with cancer and other chronic fatal diseases. It is particularly needed in places with a high proportion of patients in advanced stages where there is little chance of cure.Relief from physical, psychosocial and spiritual problems can be achieved in over 90% of advanced cancer patients through palliative care. Palliative care strategiesEffective public health strategies, comprising of community- and home-based care are essential to provide pain relief and palliative care for patients and their families in low-resource settings. Improved access to oral morphine is mandatory for the treatment of moderate to severe cancer pain, suffered by over 80% of cancer patients in terminal phase.WHO responseIn 2008, WHO launched its non-communicable Diseases Action plan. WHO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the specialized cancer agency of WHO, collaborate with other United Nations organizations and partners in the areas of international cancer prevention and control to:? increase political commitment for cancer prevention and control; ? generate new knowledge, and disseminate existing knowledge to facilitate the delivery of evidence-based approaches to cancer control;? develop standards and tools to guide the planning and implementation of interventions for prevention, early detection, treatment and care;? facilitate broad networks of cancer control partners at global, regional and national levels;? strengthen health systems at national and local levels; ? provide technical assistance for rapid, effective transfer of best practice interventions to developing countries; and? coordinate and conduct research on the causes of human cancer, the mechanisms of carcinogenesis, and develop scientific strategies for cancer prevention and control.

LONDON (Reuters) – Fewer than 1.3 million people will die from cancer in Europe this year as death rates from the disease fall, researchers said Wednesday, except that more women are dying of lung cancer in every country except Britain.

The downward trend in cancer death rates in the region is being driven mainly by falls in breast cancer mortality in women, and lung and colorectal cancer in men.

But the overall number of deaths is likely to remain similar to four years ago because populations are aging and expanding, the researchers said, and the number of women dying from lung cancer is increasing steadily everywhere except in Britain.

"Despite these favorable trends in cancer death rates in Europe the number of cancer deaths remains approximately stable, due to the aging of the population," said Carlo La Vecchia of the University of Milan in Italy, who led the study.

Cancer death rates in wealthy countries are being reduced by better, more targeted medicines and wider use of screening programs to detect tumors earlier, making them easier to treat before they spread to other parts of the body.

The researchers plan to repeat the study to predict cancer deaths for 2012 because accurately predicting death rates can help countries plan allocation of resources and strategies for preventing, treating and managing cancer.

For this year, La Vecchia noted that there was a gap between lower cancer death rates in western Europe, and higher rates in central and eastern parts of the region.

"this is likely to persist for the foreseeable future," he said in a statement on the findings.

La Vecchia's team used a new mathematical model for predicting cancer mortality. they looked at overall rates in the 27-member European Union and at individual rates in six countries: France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Britain.

Their findings, published in the cancer journal, Annals of Oncology, predicted there would be 1,281,466 cancer deaths in the EU in 2011 compared with 1,256,001 in 2007.

Converted into world standardized rates per 100,000 of the population, the figures show that in 2011 there will be a fall since 2007 from 153.8 per 100,000 to 142.8 per 100,000 in men, and from 90.7 to 85.3 in women — a drop of seven percent in men and six percent in women.

But trends in lung cancer were worrying. Britain has had the highest death rates in women for a decade and is now seeing a leveling off, the researchers said, but female lung cancer death rates are rising everywhere else in the region.

World standardized death rates from lung cancer in women in the EU will rise to 13.12 per 100,000 in 2011 from 12.55 in 2007, they found, and lung cancer has overtaken breast cancer as the top cause of cancer death in women in Poland and Britain.

Lung cancer is often caused by smoking or being exposed to secondhand smoke. Only around 15 percent of people diagnosed with it are still alive five years later, in part because the disease usually spreads silently for years before it causes clear enough symptoms to be detected.

MONMOUTH — Forty-years-ago cervical cancer was the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. but increased awareness and preventative treatment has lessened the deadliness of cervical cancer. as of 2007, cervical cancer was not even in the top 10 cancer deaths, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. "It's (cervical cancer) is one of the most preventable cancers out there," OSF Holy Family physician assistant Ann Gummow said. though the disease is dwindling in America — January is cervical cancer awareness month — it remains a cause of concern in other nations, Gummow said. she attributed the success in America to preventative medicine. "it used to be the leading cause of death in women until the Pap smear," she said. because of the Pap smear cervical cancer is being detected earlier. Gummow said cervical cancer has a 95 percent survival rate in Stage 0-1 and less than a 20 percent survival rate in Stages 3-4 when the disease often begins to show symptoms. Gummow said a women older than 21 should have a pap smear every two years. If the women has three pap smears that show no complications then she can have a pap smear every three years. "I would say everyone should get a yearly check up," Gummow said. "most basic insurances cover that." Women can receive pap smears from most family practioners. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine also helps. HPV is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer. currently, the shot is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for people from 9 to 26. The shot is actually a series of shots over six months. Gummow said she recommends the vaccination. "I think it's a good idea," she said. "There's always the possibility of adverse circumstances, but there are less adverse events than average vaccines." but Gummow said that, according to FDA, less than 6 percent of people report anything negative. and she believes the U.S. has made a lot of progress in battling cervical cancer. "People are getting better about getting their semi-annual Pap smears," she said. "Between the Pap smear and vaccinations the U.S. is doing pretty well."

JOLIET — Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States today and the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the country. Oftentimes colorectal cancer can be detected and prevented if simple steps are followed.

“Ninety percent of colorectal cancer cases can be cured when found and treated at an early stage, so regular screenings are important,” said Dr. Riten Sheth, chairman of the endoscopy committee at Silver Cross Hospital.

Researchers are learning more about what causes colon cancer and how it grows and progresses. although no one knows the exact cause of colon cancer, medical professionals know some of the risk factors.

Research indicates that a high-fat diet, lack of fiber, inactivity, obesity, environmental exposure to carcinogens and genetic predisposition are factors. to help protect yourself, eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, exercise regularly and get screened before you experience symptoms.

your chances of developing colon cancer are higher if you have any of the following:

a history of ulcerative colitis

Precancerous changes in the lining of the colon

A history of large polyps (growths in the colon)

A first-degree relative — mother, father, sister or brother — who had colon cancer before age 65.

Two first-degree relatives who had colon cancer at any age

Age also plays a role. Colon cancer risk is noted at age 50. most cases occur in people older than 65. Fewer than 2 percent of cases occur in those individuals under 40 years of age.

many people don’t know they have colorectal cancer because there are no warning signs in the early stages of the disease. The concept of screening is being tested when a person is feeling fine and has no symptoms or problems.

The best way to know if you have colorectal cancer — before you have symptoms — is to be screened for the disease.

Anyone can be stricken with colorectal cancer. Men and women over age 50 have the greatest risk. “You should have screenings earlier and more frequently if you have a family or personal history of colorectal cancer or polyps, or have a personal history of chronic inflammatory bowel disease,” said Sheth.

However, when symptoms do occur, they may include:

any change in the usual pattern or frequency of bowel habits

Diarrhea, constipation or a feeling that your bowels have not emptied completely

Blood in the stool that is either bright-red or very dark

Stools that are narrower than usual

Frequent gas pains, cramping or bloating.

Up to 90 percent of colon and rectal cancers can be prevented just by finding and removing polyps before they become a cancer.

For a referral to a physician who performs colon cancer screenings, including colonoscopies, call the Silver Cross physician referral service at 888-660-4325 or visit silver cross.org.

“Other conditions may be responsible for these symptoms, so it is wise to visit your doctor and let him or her determine the cause and treatment. But always keep in mind, early stages of colon cancer may not show any symptoms,” said Sheth.

The majority of colon cancer cases begin as small, noncancerous growths called polyps that can become cancerous over time. Polyps may appear in either the colon or the rectum, both of which are part of the large intestine.

Cost Of Lung Cancer Treatment

It is the leading cause of cancer deaths for both men and women in the United States with more than 170,000 cases being diagnosed each year. Cost Of Lung Cancer TreatmentThe level of occurrences for women is rising rapidly. Unfortunately, early treatment for the disease is rare because early detection is rare.

Risks factors: what are the causes. Facts about this disease. How do you get it?

Cigarette smoking is the main cause of this disease and is believed to be responsible for over 80% of the occurrences. Cigarette smoking is not only the chief cause of this cancerous growth in the lung, it is also the single biggest cause of cancer deaths. Ironically, it is one of the most preventable causes of cancer deaths in our society. other causes of malignancy in the lung include over exposure to asbestos, arsenic, beryllium, chromium, coal products, ionizing radiation, iron oxide, nickel, petroleum, uranium, and various other chemicals.

Detecting lung cancer early is difficult. the symptoms of this malignancy include:

Persistent cough Breathing difficulty Wheezing and fatigue Chronic upper respiratory tract infections Pus or blood-streaked sputum Chest tightness or chest pain Repeated attacks of bronchitis or pneumonia

Dealing with the effects of lung cancer and finding a cure for it is rather illusive especially given the fact that early detection is difficult.

Traditional treatment

Surgery Surgery is the most effective treatment, but only one-half of the cases can be treated by surgery by the time the disease is detected. Surgery is not performed if cancer cells are found in nearby lymph nodes. Drugs Radiation and chemotherapy Radiation is used to treat localized lesions and malignancies not treatable by surgery.
