PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — a U.S.-based health group in Haiti says it saw a huge drop in the number of patients seeking treatment for cholera in the Caribbean country.

Partners in Health says the number of hospitalizations fell by 57 per cent at its 15 cholera treatment centres from July to August. The drop mirrors the caseload doctors saw before the spring rainy season.

But the group was still concerned about cholera. Partners in Health said the 5,400 hospitalizations in August are a reminder that cholera will be in Haiti for the foreseeable future.

The findings were released Monday.

Haiti’s Health Ministry says cholera has killed more than 6,200 people and sickened almost 440,000 others. a U.N. battalion from Nepal has been blamed for introducing the disease to Haiti.

MIAMI (AP) – A Haitian man who was among the first group deported to the Caribbean country since last year’s earthquake has died after suffering cholera-like symptoms in jail.

Family members and Miami-based immigrant advocates group say 34-year-old Wildrick Guerrier was detained after he arrived. He suffered from vomiting and severe diarrhea in jail and died at a relative’s home.

A cholera epidemic in Haiti has killed at least 4,000 and sickened 200,000 more.

Guerrier and 26 others were deported to Haiti on Jan. 20. all but one had been convicted of a crime in the U.S.

The advocates say at least one other deportee is suffering from cholera-like symptoms.

Several legal and immigrant rights groups want the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to stop the U.S. from deporting Haitians.
