New research out of Scotland’s University of Sterling, published this month in the journal Mental Health and Physical Activity showed that walking had a “large effect” on reducing the symptoms of depression. The challenge, especially among those currently experiencing symptoms of depression, is motivating individuals to move more throughout the day. The researchers analyzed more than 14,672 articles focusing on eight trials involving 341 patients. Study results reported that walking posed a significant effect on depression symptoms but cautioned that individuals should undertake walking regimens under the supervision of physicians if their aim is to eradicate symptoms of depression.

A CDC report on the mental health of Americans showed an estimated 9% of U.S. adults meet the criteria for clinical depression. The state by state breakdown reported the lowest rate in North Dakota at 4.8% and the highest rate of depression in Mississippi at 14.8%. A regional breakdown showed the highest rates of adult depression in the Southeast.

Lela McKnight-Eily, a clinical psychologist and epidemiologist at the CDC related these higher concentrations may be due to higher rates of obesity, heart disease, stoke and sleep patterns all of which are caused in part by sedentary lifestyles. these conditions are mitigated by continual daily movement as offered by the TrekDesk Treadmill Desk.

This is not the first study to show the curative powers of walking and its effect on depression. A major study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, showed that adults aged 20 to 45 with mild to moderate depression who participated in 30-minute aerobic exercise sessions three to five times a week reduced their symptoms by almost 50 percent. Studies at Harvard University found similar results and found that symptoms were impacted in as little as three weeks and walking was more effective than the most commonly prescribed drugs to fight depression. all studies stressed the importance of physician care and oversight to monitor the patient.

Well, now I know for sure what my answer will be when my almost 11-year-old daughter‘s pediatrician asks if we want the HPV vaccine at her next check-up: An emphatic “NO.” I was leaning in that direction anyway, for various reasons (more on those in a minute), but the latest news on Gardisil pretty much sealed the deal — and if you have a tween girl, it might do the same for you.

In a study of 900 girls and young women between the ages of 11 and 26 who received the HPV vaccine, it was the 11- to 12-year-old group who experienced the worst side effects, from pain, dizziness, bruising, and swelling at the injection site to (in rare cases) fainting. These symptoms generally showed up about two weeks after the vaccine was administered.

What bothers me about these findings isn’t that any of the side effects are so horrific or life-threatening — though of course it doesn’t help that my daughter happens to be at the riskiest age. what bothers me is that researchers are still in the process of finding out what Gardisil is capable of doing to kids, but the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics are acting like it’s perfectly safe.

Maybe it is perfectly safe. Unfortunately, we don’t know that yet. Unlike all of the other vaccines my kids have gotten so far, the HPV vaccine is new — so new that it’s impossible to tell at this point what the long-term “side effects” could be. and like I said, maybe there aren’t any. But why should I allow my daughter to be a guinea pig?

The cause of a mysterious condition that haunts its sufferers with sensations of crawling bugs and fibrous material embedded in the skin may be one step closer to being found, a new study suggests.

The condition, commonly referred to as Morgellons, does not appear to be contagious, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“This alleviates concerns about the condition being contagious between family members and others,” said mark Eberhard, Director of CDC’s Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria.

People with Morgellons report having symptoms manifesting on their skin. These include non-healing skin lesions, the emergence of fibers or solid material from the skin, and disturbing sensations, such as crawling, stinging or biting. Some patients report fatigue, memory loss and a substantial decline in quality of life, according to the study.

The study was undertaken after the CDC received a number of calls over the last 10 years with reports of the condition, Eberhard said.

“We had no idea what it was or might be,” Eberhard told MyHealthNewsDaily. “We felt very compelled to do something. it was quite clear that people were suffering.”

The report still does not identify a cause of the condition, and Morgellons is not recognized as a distinct medical disorder. however, by ruling out an infectious cause, researchers have begun to narrow down what health care providers need to look for when patients report signs of the condition, Eberhard said. And it’s likely that different factors contribute to individual cases.

“I don’t think there’s going to be a single diagnosis that will fit across the spectrum of it,” Eberhard said.

Unexplained disease

Eberhard and colleagues identified 109 patients with this condition by searching the electronic medical record database of Kaiser Permanente of Northern California. The researchers estimate the condition is rare, found in about four out of every 100,000 people.

Patients were put through a battery of tests to identify possible causes, including a medical exam, skin biopsies and psychiatric and blood testing. Fibers and solid material was extracted from the patients’ wounds, and their composition was examined.

“There’s been a great deal of fixation, on everybody’s part, with those fibers,” Eberhard said. Previous reports included patients bringing fibers they said had emerged from their skin to their doctors, but “there was no way to validate, scientifically, where the fibers came from,” Eberhard said.

The researchers concluded the fibers were coming from external sources, mostly from cotton. Fibers from clothing or carpet may become stuck in an open wound before it clots over, and appear to be coming from the wound, Eberhard said.

The majority of patients were middle-age white women. about half had evidence of other medical conditions, mostly psychiatric illnesses. Also, about half of patients were found to have been using drugs, including amphetamines, opiates and cocaine, according to the study.

Most of the lesions had the appearance of wounds caused by scratching, Eberhard said. Other potential causes for some of the cases include eczema and bug bites.

Seeking help

Eberhard emphasized that the study cannot say whether certain factors, including drug use and scratching, are a cause or an effect of the condition.

People who suspect they have Morgellons should speak with their health care provider, Eberhard said. Eberhard recommends that both the patient and doctor keep an open mind about the diagnosis.

However, “we would propose that they not focus on an infectious cause, or an environmental link,” Eberhard said.

Although no treatment for Morgellons is available, patients should be given standard therapies for any co-occurring conditions they may have, the researchers say. in addition, patients may benefit from therapies used to treat psychiatric conditions with similar symptoms.

The study is published today (Jan. 25) in the online journal PLoS ONE.

When I was pregnant with my daughter last year, my OB/GYN recommended that I receive the pertussis, or “whooping cough” vaccine right after delivery. Hearing the words “whooping cough,” made me think of polio or smallpox, diseases that had been eliminated in the U.S. years ago.

Yet pertussis is a real threat, particularly in infants who not only have the greatest risk for contracting pertussis, but the most reported cases. in 2010, there were more than four thousand babies who were known to be infected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Plus, newborns younger than 2 months old, the age that the first vaccine is administered, are most likely to have complications like pneumonia, convulsions, even death. Sixty-three percent of babies under one year are hospitalized each year and 25 babies died from pertussis in 2010. And because some cases are undiagnosed or go unreported, experts agree these numbers may be even higher.

The reason that rates of pertussis have been on the rise in recent years and tend to peak every 3-5 years is because of a waning of immunity, according to Dr. Thomas Clark, a medical epidemiologist for the CDC.  The disease is very easily transmitted so if there’s a portion of the population that’s susceptible because they haven’t received the booster vaccine, which is recommended during the adolescent and adult years, then the bacteria will transmit more readily.

What To Look ForPertussis is a bacterial disease that causes severe fits of coughing—so severe, that it forces all the air out of the lungs and results in a “whoop” sound when the person is finally able to inhale. yet initially, symptoms may be similar to the common cold and include a mild cough or low-grade fever.  And in very young infants, whooping cough can cause apnea, or a pause in breathing, which is a sign of a very serious infection, according to Clark.  Babies often contract pertussis from someone in the home – mom, dad, or a caregiver, although they can also catch it in hospitals and daycare settings.

Protect Yourself and your BabyIf you’re pregnant, you should receive the pertussis booster vaccine (Tdap) during the late second or third trimester, according to a revised recommendation by the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices issued last year. Women who don’t receive it during pregnancy are urged to get it immediately after giving birth. Family members and caregivers should get vaccinated, too, and it’s important to keep your baby away from anyone who has cold or cough symptoms.

Babies should receive the pertussis vaccination series on time, starting at 2 months old, then at 4 and 6 months old and booster doses between 15 and 18 months and then between 4 and 6 years old. “Protection wanes actually pretty quickly,” according to Clark who says booster doses are important to ensure your child is protected.

LAKE COUNTY — the wetter than normal spring has resulted in an explosion of ticks in Lake County.

one Kelseyville resident reported recently he has been picking ticks off his body on a daily basis. He said that even a short walk through the grass where he lives results in ticks.

Ticks are the primary carriers of Lyme disease in California and Lake County.

If a person is bitten and gets infected and does not receive prompt treatment, it can have devastating consequences for a lifetime.

While the chances of catching Lyme disease are not high, people who frequent the woods in Lake and Mendocino counties are urged to be on the lookout for ticks that carry the bacteria.

Adult ticks will wait in on low-lying vegetation until they can grab onto a passing host. Immature ticks can be picked up by humans directly from the soil or leaf litter.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Lyme disease is a bacterial disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi.

the disease is spread by the bite of a tick. in California it’s the western black-legged tick that transmits the disease.

the tick bites an infected animal such as a mouse, bird, deer or lizard and then becomes a carrier of the disease.

the symptoms of Lyme disease varies.

Within one to two weeks of being infected, a person may have a “bull’s-eye” rash along with a fever, headache and muscle or joint pain. Some people have Lyme disease and do not have any early symptoms. other people have a fever and other flu-like symptoms without a rash. in its early stages Lyme disease can be effectively treated with antibiotics. However, if left untreated it can cause arthritic or neurological problems that will require extensive medical treatment.

After several days or weeks, the bacteria may spread throughout the body of an infected person. People infected with the disease experience a wide array of symptoms from arthritis to heart and neurological problems. there have been very few deaths caused by Lyme disease, however, the crippling effects of the disease can last a lifetime.

there is a blood test for Lyme disease and according to the CDC the test is about 80-85 percent reliable, however, it doesn’t always pick up the disease. It can also lay dormant in your body for years before becoming active.

the people most at risk for catching Lyme disease are hunters, hikers, campers or workers who spend a good deal of time in the woods. a controlled study done by world renown entomologist Robert S. Lane PHD of the University of California, Berkeley listed the five greatest risk behaviors for catching Lyme disease. the study consisted of researchers doing various tasks in the woods and the number of ticks were counted that attached themselves to the individuals. Sitting on a log drew most of the ticks. that was followed by gathering wood, sitting against a tree, walking through the woods and sitting in leaf piles.

According to Lane, only nymphs (Immature ticks) and adult female ticks can transmit the Lyme disease bacteria to humans. Lane says that it’s the nymphs, which are about the size of a poppy seed, that are most dangerous because they’re hard to see and difficult to remove.

Only a small percentage of ticks carry the Lyme disease bacteria. Studies have shown that in Lake and Mendocino counties less than 3 percent of the ticks are actual carriers.

the good news is that it normally takes at least 24 hours after a tick attaches itself to a human before the person is infected. If the tick is removed promptly the chance of getting Lyme disease is very low.

If a person is bitten by a tick the CDC advises that you remove the tick carefully to prevent breaking off the head.

the best method is to use a small set of tweezers. Grab the tick as close as possible to the head and pull straight out.

the symptoms of Lyme disease are a red bulls-eye rash that occurs at the location of the tick bite within a few days after being bitten.

other symptoms are headache, stiff neck, fever and flu-like symptoms. Sometimes there are no early symptoms at all.

in its early stages Lyme disease can be effectively treated with antibiotics. However, if left untreated it can cause arthritic or neurological problems that will require extensive treatment.

Most physicians automatically prescribe antibiotics when they see an infected tick bite or the family red bulls-eye.

Ticks can be repelled by applying a tick repellent to clothing. the most common repellents have the ingredient DEET.

Check your body carefully for several days after returning from the woods.

Ticks like to attach themselves in the groin area, underarms and other places where the skin is soft.

Health Departments React with Alarm to new CDC Surveillance Data

Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released national sexually transmitted disease (STD) surveillance data for 2007. The report shows persistent and staggeringly high rates of STDs as well as a disproportionate burden of infections on youth, minorities, and women. Upon the release of this information, the National Coalition of STD Directors called for a renewed commitment from Congress and President-elect Obama to fight the STD epidemic in the U.S.

In 2007, more than 1.1 million Chlamydia cases were reported, which is the largest number of cases ever reported to CDC for any condition. Rates of primary and secondary (P & S) syphilis increased by 15% from 2006, and 65% of all P & S syphilis cases were among men who have sex with men (MSM). In addition, the report shows persistent and growing racial disparities in Chlamydia, Syphilis, and Gonorrhea infections. In 2007, Blacks were 19 times more likely to become infected with Gonorrhea than whites.

“this report should serve as a wake up call to policymakers and the public that STDs remain a significant public health threat in the U.S., and a scaled up investment of funds are desperately needed for prevention and treatment,” stated Don Clark, NCSD’s Executive Director.

CDC estimates that approximately 19 million STD infections occur each year, and nearly half are among those aged 15-24 years. African American women between 15 and 19 are particularly hard hit, accounting for the highest rates of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea of any group. The consequences of untreated STDs include infertility, pregnancy complications, cervical cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, birth defects and an increased risk of HIV transmission.

While rates of STDs have continued to increase, federal funding for CDC’s Division of STD Prevention has steadily declined since Fiscal Year 2003. this has significantly hampered the ability of STD programs in state and local health departments to deliver critical prevention and treatment services, as well as conduct surveillance. “State and local health departments are responsible for controlling this epidemic and often are the medical providers of last resort for persons with STDs. There needs to be a systematic reinvestment in the public health infrastructure to provide the necessary clinical services to diagnose and treat STDs and contact exposed partners to insure that they are treated and further spread is prevented,” stated Dr. Peter Kerndt, NCSD Board Chair and STD Program Director from Los Angeles County.

“In addition to the need for a greater investment of resources for CDC’s Division of STD Prevention, NCSD strongly urges Congress and President-elect Obama to support evidence-based prevention programs to prevent STDs, particularly for young people,” stated Don Clark. More than $ 1.6 billion in federal funds have been spent on abstinence-only-until-marriage programs, which have been unable to demonstrate effectiveness at delaying sexual activity, or reducing rates of STDs, including HIV/AIDS, or unintended pregnancy. Clark continued, “it is time to end these ineffective and harmful programs, and invest in science based approaches to STD prevention, including comprehensive sex education.”

(CNN) — whether it’s to a swimming pool or a doughnut store, Michael Browne knows where he wants to go — and since he doesn’t have the words to say so, he’ll just dart off.

Michael, who’s about to turn 10, has a severe form of autism. People with the developmental disorder typically have difficulty communicating and socializing. But another sometimes dangerous aspect of autism has received less scientific attention and causes endless stress for parents: a tendency to run away from home or adult supervision.

"we constantly have our eye on the door and on Michael, and it’s a hard way to live," said Melanie Browne of Katy, Texas. "I think that’s the hardest part of raising him, is just the wandering issue."

Autism groups are calling for greater awareness and study of what they call "wandering" or "elopement" behavior, referring to this habit of fleeing a place at any moment. neither of those words accurately describes the phenomenon, but there’s no better shorthand at the moment, says Dr. Paul Law, director of the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Interactive Autism Network.

Wandering is probably the leading cause of death among children with autism, Law said. Only limited data are available, but drowning seems most common among these fatalities.

Promoting an understanding of wandering in autism is important for Browne, who has dealt with police, teachers and neighbors who seem to blame her for Michael’s behavior, as if bad parenting were the cause. and she feels misled by doctors who suggested that with enough early intervention, Michael’s autism symptoms would markedly improve. despite specialized programs beginning at age 2, he still can’t have a conversation and has been prone to running off since age 4.

"they want you to dream big, especially when they’re young. But then, when you realize your child is severe, there has to be some support for that, and you have to come to terms with that," she said. "You end up grieving more."

Toward greater knowledge of wandering

The Interactive Autism Network is looking for families affected by autism to participate in a survey regarding wandering behavior, as a step toward better understanding it. What differentiates those children who run away from those who don’t? What triggers it? What helps stop it? these are all open questions.

Survey findings may affect the debate over a proposal to make wandering a specific diagnosis. It would give wandering that is related to autism and other developmental disorders a "diagnostic code," a classification for clinical and insurance purposes. a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention committee talked about the issue in March.

Browne, other parents and groups like Autism Speaks and the National Autism Association are supporting this effort. Autism spectrum disorders affect 1 in 110 children in the U.S., according to the CDC, but it’s not known how common wandering is.

A specific diagnostic code would help clinicians as well as police understand what the behavior means, gauge how frequently it occurs and allow for broader insurance coverage for interventions, such as tracking devices, advocates say. a diagnostic code is already in place for wandering in the context of dementia.

But the Autistic Self Advocacy Network joined several other organizations in writing a letter to the CDC against the proposal, partly because of a concern that a diagnostic code could put restrictions on people with autism in educational settings and elsewhere, leading to further isolation. The diagnostic code could also be used in situations where a child is deliberately trying to escape abuse and has no other way to express discomfort, these groups argue.

And among children, wandering behavior isn’t unique to autism. a variety of different developmental disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, can also lead to children running off at any given moment, said Dr. Max Wiznitzer, a pediatric neurologist at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland.

Since there are so many associated conditions that begin in childhood, Wiznitzer does not find it appropriate to single out autistic wandering in the way that some groups are advocating. The CDC’s proposal is not limited to autism; even so, creating a new code isn’t sufficient for understanding what drives a particular person to bolt at any moment, Wiznitzer said.

For autism specifically, current codes and physician recommendations are sufficient for insurance coverage, he said. Wandering is a serious problem, but it should be studied more closely, he said.

"we need to investigate further and best determine how to best meet the needs of all children," he said.

Others say that a code for wandering in autism is necessary because the behavior may have particularly harmful consequences with this condition. a child with autism walking around alone may not be able to communicate with anyone who wants to help, said Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer of Autism Speaks.

Protecting children with autism

In late March, a train struck and killed a 6-year-old boy with autism from Geelong, Australia, who had wandered from home, Australian media reported. in the U.S., at least eight children who have autism, ages 3 to 8, died after wandering in 2010, according to the National Autism Association. in February of this year, two children with autism drowned, the organization said.

Worst-case scenarios fuel the fears of parents like Browne every day. Michael has an obsession with water, as she wrote in her iReport in 2008, which means he might try to go swimming alone, or get caught in traffic along the way.

"You live in fear that he’s going to get out, and then when he does, the police are going to be upset with you, even though you know you’re a great parent," she said. "You’re just hyper-aware."

There are a variety of reasons why children with autism may wander off; a common underlying factor is impulsivity, Wiznitzer said. they may feel stress or sensory overload from a situation and want to leave it; or, they may be attracted to a certain place and try to go there. An underlying condition such as anxiety should be treated, including with medication if necessary, he said.

Parents should also do whatever they can to prevent their children from wandering off alone, he said. The Browne household has deadbolt locks and an alarm system that beeps when any door or window is opened, which has kept Michael in so far. (The last time he got out, only the door had an alarm, and he found a spare key.)

Other parents equip their wandering-prone children with removable GPS tracking devices, such as a bracelet or anklet, so they can be found more easily. Michael’s mother looked into that, too, but couldn’t find any with a range wide enough for her son’s unexpected travels. and as far as a name bracelet, she fears Michael would hurt himself trying to take one off.

Many times, as children get older, the wandering behavior improves, Wiznitzer said. But there’s a subset of people who do not get better, and no one knows why.

Browne wishes there were more support for children like Michael who have severe autism. Her insurance stops covering therapy for autism at age 6, and the emphasis in many autism initiatives is on higher-functioning kids.

"You feel very isolated, and you feel alone, and when you do get help, it comes by accident," Browne said.

Browne recognizes that there are some children with even more severe autism, who have trouble with basic tasks. Michael is currently schooled in a self-contained classroom for children with autism because of the wandering behavior, and he takes medication. She’s thankful for where he is, and she hopes for future medications that can help him with talking and socializing, and discourage wandering.

"they are not defective. they just have a different type of brain," she said of children with her son’s condition. "I wish that people would realize that kids with autism, no matter how severe, have value."

Fortunately for the public, gonorrhea infection rates across the United States have been on the decline in recent years. Still, the U.S. CDC estimates that approximately 700,000 new cases of gonorrhea are reported each year, and this figure doesn’t include undocumented infections. Recognizing the symptoms of gonorrhea is an essential component of battling the spread of this prevalent STD. unfortunately, the symptoms of gonorrhea aren’t always present or symptoms can be so mild they are easily ignored. Understanding how to prevent and recognize gonorrhea, with or without symptoms, is imperative for women in particular.

The Symptoms of Gonorrhea in Women
