DALLAS, Dec. 6 (UPI) — Recognizing possible symptoms of gynecologic cancers can lead to diagnosis and timely treatment, a U.S. gynecologic oncologist says.

Dr. Debra Richardson of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas said women who have gone through menopause, for instance, should not experience any menstrual bleeding.

“Any bleeding — even spotting — after menopause is not normal and should be checked out by a gynecologist,” Richardson said in a statement.

Some common causes of postmenopausal bleeding include:

– Polyps are usually non-cancerous, but these growths can develop in the uterus, on the cervix or inside the cervical canal.

– Endometrial atrophy: the tissue that lines the uterus can become very thin after menopause.

– Endometrial hyperplasia: sometimes the lining of the uterus becomes thick, usually due to too much estrogen and too little progesterone. Some patients may have abnormal cells that can lead to endometrial cancer.

– Cancer: Bleeding after menopause can be a sign of endometrial or uterine cancer.

if it is not diagnosed until symptoms such as abnormal bleeding/heavy periods occur? Anyone know what the odds are of surviving if it is left undiagnosed until the symptoms show?

Was it just an abnormal pap, or true cancer? There are many treatments for cell changes on the cervix, such as freezing (cryosurgery) and scraping. This kills/ removes the cells and causes the body to generate new (healthy) cells. the treatment depends upon how severe it is. please provide more info – do you have a diagnosis from a doctor, if so what is the exact wording of the diagnosis?

it is fatal but the drs see that its not too far gone they can do chemo and other treatmetns to help out. im so sorry about it its very hard to have cancer or to deal with it. i wish u and whoever else so much love and luck

It really depends on how aggresive the cancer is and how advanced. Just because it has not been diagnosed until symptoms present themselves it does not mean it will definitely be fatal.

Obviously smear testing is very important in the prevention and detection of cervical cancer, but with treatment patients can and do survive.

SYMPTOMS

• Nucleic acid amplification (PCR and LCR) tests. these tests look for genetic material of the organism. these are the tests of choice because they are the most sensitive (more than 90% accurate) and the most specific. They are also convenient because they can be performed on urine samples and do not require a pelvic exam.

An infected person should contact all partners within the last two months so that they can be treated for chlamydia.

Infected pregnant women should be given erythromycin for seven days, instead of other drugs, because this drug is safer during pregnancy.

Follow-up testing is done four weeks after drug treatment to see if the infection is eradicated. If tests continues to be positive, the patient will be given another course of antibiotics.

A woman’s prognosis depends on the duration of infection, whether the infection has spread through the uterus and the fallopian tubes, and the number of previous chlamydial infections. If caught early, the disease can be completely cured with antibiotic treatment in seven days. However, if left untreated, chlamydia can spread through the uterus to the fallopian tubes and cause chronic pelvic inflammatory disease. Infertility may occur as a result of serious damage to the female reproductive tract. Potentially fatal tubal pregnancy is also a risk.

Prevention is the most important means of stopping the spread of this disease. The following practices are recommended to prevent the spread of this and other sexually transmitted diseases:

• Abstinence. Abstinence is the only 100% way to prevent chlamydia and other STD infections.
• Monogamy. having a mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner reduces the chance of getting STD infections.
• Avoiding a sexual relationship with an unknown partner or a partner whose infection status is unknown.
• If having sex with an unknown partner, using a barrier contraceptive such as a condom (for men) or diaphragm (for women) is recommended. However, condoms (or diaphragms) are not 100% effective against chlamydia or other STDs.
• Refraining from douching.
• Avoiding sex soon after giving birth or undergoing an induced abortion.
• Getting tested for chlamydia at yearly pelvic examinations.

The chlamydia bacterium is similar to gonorrhea in the symptoms it produces and the way it is spread. Like gonorrhea, it can live in the cervix, urethra, throat, and rectum. Infected persons, both men and women, may lack any symptoms and can spread the disease unknowingly to other sexual partners.

Chlamydia symptoms usually  become evident in one to three weeks after infection.  however, chlamydia is one of the silent STDs because some people show no symptoms at all.  It is estimated that about 75 percent of women and 50 percent of men exhibit no signs of the disease.

In women, chlamydia symptoms include vaginal discharge, burning or painful urination, abdominal pain, and lower back pain, pain during intercourse, fever, nausea, and vaginal bleeding between periods. in men, common symptoms include burning or painful urination, penile discharge, burning or itching around the opening of the penis, and swelling of the testicles.

Symptoms for men and women include a burning sensation while urinating. Chlamydia can travel up the fallopian tubes in women and cause abdominal pain, pain during intercourse, nausea and fever. Symptoms may include a vaginal discharge which may contain pus, pain during intercourse, frequent urination, burning pain when urinating. in chronic cervicitis the cervix may swell and cysts may develop.

Symptoms of an infection will initially include an abnormal vaginal discharge, such as an increase, followed by a foul smell. It may also burn when trying to urinate. Symptoms and signs, which can take anywhere from two to 30 days to appear, include a burning sensation when urinating, or a white, yellow or green discharge from the penis. sometimes men with gonorrhea get painful or swollen testicles. Women who have chlamydia only infecting the cervix, where it does not go up and actually infect the fallopian tubes, will probably maintain pretty normal fertility rates. on the other hand, repeated episodes of fallopian tube infection with either chlamydia or gonorrhea increase a woman’s risk of infertility due to tubal blockage and scarring. Women with damaged tubes do occasionally fall pregnant, but there is an increased risk of the pregnancy developing in the tubes rather than the womb. This is called an ectopic pregnancy. Women frequently develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can cause infertility (not being able to get pregnant), chronic pelvic pain, tubal pregnancies, and the continued spread of the disease.

Women with chlamydia may also experience abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding and painful sexual intercourse, while men with chlamydia may also experience slimy discharge from the penis and testicular pain. Chlamydia is easy to treat if it’s caught early. Women infected with chlamydia are also up to five times more likely to contract HIV if exposed, than women with a healthy reproductive system.
