The difference between staying well and suffering days of misery depends on which of two contradictory ways the immune system reacts to infection by the flu. One strong reaction releases inflammatory chemicals leading to sickness, researchers report online August 25 in PLoS Genetics. an equally strong but opposite reaction produces anti-inflammatory compounds and fights off the flu without producing symptoms. 

Most of what researchers know about influenza’s effect on people comes from studies of people who are already sick. but Alfred Hero and his colleagues wanted to know how some people seem to be able to avoid getting sick. the researchers infected 17 volunteers with a strain of seasonal flu called H3N2/Wisconsin.

Nine of the volunteers got sick. some of the others reported feeling under the weather, but had no clinically discernible symptoms. the researchers drew blood before the flu inoculation and every eight hours for five days after the initial infection. the team then examined the activity of about 22,000 genes in each blood sample.

“The persistent patterns that came out of this were striking to say the least,” says Hero, a computer scientist and electrical engineer at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Gene activity patterns could predict up to 36 hours before symptoms peaked how sick people would get, the researchers found. Those who got sick activated immune chemicals that trigger inflammation and stress responses. “In asymptomatic people the immune response is just as active, but dramatically different in nature,” Hero says. People who stayed well not only repressed the stress response, but also activated anti-inflammation and antioxidant genes.

“This is really exciting data,” says Octavio Ramilo, the head of pediatric infectious diseases at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. the study illustrates that gene activity analysis may help doctors determine which patients are most in danger of getting seriously ill. but the current study hasn’t put the entire story together yet, he says. Researchers still need to determine whether the different patterns of responses depend upon the person’s genetic makeup, properties of the virus or other factors. Hero adds that the people in the study may react differently to other flu strains or even to the same one under different circumstances.

The technology may one day help doctors diagnose which viruses are infecting babies with fevers and predict which infants will end up in the intensive care unit and which ones can go home.

Such tests may also be important public health tools for preventing flu pandemics, Ramilo says. People who stayed well tended to spread fewer flu viruses than people who got sick, the study showed. so health care workers might be able to test people exposed to a virus and determine from gene activity patterns who needs to be quarantined to limit the spread of infectious diseases.

Blood tests: Tumor markers are measured in the blood test.  This test helps to monitor the disease.

The goal of the treatment is to relieve the patient from the symptoms and control the growth of the cancer. This will improve the quality of life of the patient. the treatment for the secondary bone cancer is given via hormone, chemo, radiotherapy or surgery. the treatment may be given either alone or in combination.

The treatment is given based on number of factors such as the symptoms, the spreading of the cancer in the bone, the type of tumor, and health condition of the patient.

Hormone therapy: hormone therapy includes the use of the drugs Tamoxifen and the aromatase inhibitors. Hormone therapy is the first choice of treatment for the secondary bone cancer.

Chemotherapy: if the secondary bone cancer does not respond to the hormone therapy then chemotherapy is given. Anti-cancer drugs are used to control the cancer and they are given alone or in combination.

Radiotherapy: the aim of radiation therapy is to decrease the pain and prevent possibility of the fractures. it is given as a single dose or the dose is divided for a few days. This reduces the side-effects of the treatment.

Bisphosphonates: These are the drugs that target the parts of the skeleton where the osteoclasts have become overactive. Quitting smoking is a popular new Year’s resolution, and quitting smokeless tobacco is just as important for the sake of your health. “Smokeless” does not mean it’s harmless, and it still has a multitude of risks.

Smokeless tobacco can harm your health and place you at risk for developing certain types of cancer.”

In 2005, the five largest tobacco companies spent more than $250 million on smokeless tobacco advertising, according to the Federal Trade Commission. their main targets were young men. “Each year, doctors find more than 35,000 new cases of mouth and throat cancer,” Johnson says. “Approximately half of those people will die within five years.” recent research shows that spit tobacco use may cause problems beyond the mouth. it also has been associated with cancers of the esophagus, larynx, pancreas and stomach, as well as an increased risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases.

Besides causing cancer, smokeless tobacco also can affect your smile. according to the American Dental Association, smokeless tobacco can lead to gum disease and tooth loss. Johnson says that medications and nicotine replacement products are available to help with tobacco cessation, and your physician can discuss which options are best for you. in addition, it’s helpful to take tobacco cessation classes and attend a support group. “Classes can help by providing education and support in the quit attempt, and they increase your chance for success,” Johnson says. “Classes can help a person in identifying triggers, and help to develop a plan for situations that may tempt a person to return to dipping or chewing. Classes include discussions for dealing with stress and improving overall health, without the use of tobacco.”

Hepatitis is a kind of inflammation of the liver due to the liver being injured. In medical jargon an inflammation that lasts for a period of less than 6 months is termed acute hepatitis. Inflammation that continues beyond the 6 month mark is termed chronic hepatitis.

The causes of liver inflammation have been broadly classified by doctors to form two main categories. There is viral hepatitis and non infectious hepatitis. Viral hepatitis is a very confusing disease and is categorized into five viruses named from Hepatitis A to Hepatitis E. Each of the viruses causes a different type of hepatitis and spreads differently as well. some forms of the disease are infectious as well.

Strangely enough some people do not have any symptoms when they get infected with the hepatitis C virus despite the fact that it damages the liver. it is possible that the symptoms may emerge at a later stage and can even take months or as long as 20 years to appear. it is also possible that a person can develop the disease and the immune system will work to eradicate it completely without their knowledge.

When the symptoms for hepatitis C do appear, they may include: nausea, vomiting, flu like symptoms, loss of appetite, diarrhea, jaundice, fatigue, itchy skin and pain over the liver, just under the rib cage.

Make time for your health this year — take steps to reduce your risk of cancer.

There are many causes and kinds of cancer, but a combination of enough physical activity, proper nutrition, avoiding tobacco and regular screenings can help reduce your risk for many types of cancer.

Physical activity

Regular physical activity can reduce your risk of being overweight and obesity, which are known to increase the risk of breast and colorectal cancers.

Make it a priority to get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five days a week, or 20 minutes of vigorous activity 3 days a week.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, you should do this as well as include eight to 10 resistance-training exercises involving all muscle groups, two or three days a week.

Nutrition

Monthly/yearly screenings

- Breast cancer — The American Cancer Society recommends a breast exam by a doctor every two-to-three years for women in their 20s and 30s, and a mammogram every year for women over age 40.

- Cervical and ovarian cancer — Women should begin pap tests and pelvic exams three years after they become sexually active and all women should begin these screenings annually after age 21.

- Colorectal cancer — The most common screening tests include the fecal occult blood test and colonoscopy.

Baseline colonoscopy screening should be done at age 50. Your doctor will determine how often you need to be tested.

- Prostate and testicular cancer — Men need to schedule screenings for prostate health, starting between ages 40-50.

Sometimes this cancer can be detected through a blood test before you have any symptoms.

Be sure to ask your doctor about this exam as well as how to do a testicular self-examination.

Researchers have been able to detect “markers” in the blood that identify the disease three to five years before any memory loss occurs.

The breakthrough means that treatment for the disease could be started before irreversible brain damage has been caused – dramatically slowing down progression.

The same technology could also make it easier to spot other disease such as Parkinson’s and hard-to-detect cancers, said the researchers.

Around 750,000 people in the UK suffer from dementia, more than half of whom have Alzheimer’s.

At present the only way for sure to know if someone has suffered from the condition is to carry out a brain examination after their death.

Scientists have long been trying to discover ways of detect antibodies, chemicals and other substances in the blood that identify the body is fighting the condition.

But this has proved elusive until now.

In the new study, scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in Florida, have come up with a new approach by manufacturing thousands of molecules in different shapes – known as peptoids -designed to react with antibodies.

This suggests these antibodies are unique to the condition.

Further tests on six patients and laboratory mice showed that it was 93 per cent accurate and could eventually be used to detect the condition up to five years in advance.

Professor Thomas Kodadek, who led the research, said tests on thousands more patients was needed to test the accuracy of the test.

“If this works in Alzheimer’s disease, it suggests it is a pretty general platform that may work for a lot of different diseases,” he said.

Experts described the research as exciting but cautioned that it is still in the early stages.

Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research at the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “This is a refreshing new approach to diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease which holds promise.

“Early diagnosis is very important and a simple non-invasive blood test for Alzheimer’s disease would be invaluable.

“However, this research is in the early stages and more investigation is needed to find out it if it can be developed in to a reliable and practical test for the future.

“As a million people develop dementia in the next 10 years we urgently need more funding to find reliable tests for the diseases that cause dementia.”

Dr Bryce Vissel, head of research into neurodegenerative diseases at the Garvan Institute in Australia, said: “This exciting study has significant implications for advancing understanding and treatments of diseases like multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease.

“This is a step towards being able to develop better treatments because we may now be able to identify people early in the disease and test drugs on them before the disease is too advanced.

“Perhaps even more importantly, the study offers a new approach to identify disease markers in the blood which could have significant implications for accurately diagnosing a range of diseases.”

The research was published in the journal Cell.
