There are some people who are always sick while others are okay. People become sick due to pathogens. ‘pathogen’ means disease, a pathogen is an agent that produces a disease. it means suffering; it is an infectious agent, or germ, that causes disease or illness to the living organ. Many of these pathogens can make us sick and some can cause death. for pathogens to be successful and cause disease they must be able to overcome certain challenges to survive. they must; (1) find a host, (2) Attach and colonise, (3) Invade and evade the host’s defenses, which causes damage to the host, and (4) be able to survive outside of the host.

The body contains many natural defenses against some of the common pathogens in the form of the human immune system and by some ‘helpful’ bacteria present in the human body’s normal flora. however, if the immune system or ‘good’ bacteria is damaged in any way (such as by chemotherapy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), or antibiotics being taken to kill other pathogens), pathogenic bacteria that were being held at bay can cause harm to the body. such cases are called opportunistic infections.

Groups of pathogens or germs;there are five main groups of pathogens; viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa (which include the malaria parasite) and intestinal parasites (such as flatworms and roundworms). .

Viruses: Consist of genetic materials surrounded by a protective coat of protein. they are capable of latching onto cells and getting inside them. The cells of the mucous membranes, such as those lining the respiratory passages that we breathe through, are particularly open to virus attacks because they are not covered by protective skin.

Bacteria: are organisms made up of just one cell. they are capable of multiplying by themselves, as they have the power to divide. Their shapes vary, and doctors use these characteristics to separate them into groups. Bacteria exist everywhere, inside and on our bodies. most of them are completely harmless, and some of them are very useful. But some bacteria can cause diseases, either because they end up in the wrong place in the body, or simply designed to invade us.

Fungi: Fungi are a group of organisms and micro-organisms that are classified within their own kingdom, the fungal kingdom, as they are neither plant nor animal. Fungi draw their nutrition from decaying organic matter, living plants and even animals.

Protozoa: The protozoa are one-celled animals and the smallest of all animals. most of them can only be seen under a microscope. they breathe, move, and reproduce like other animals. they live in water or at least where it is damp. they can be free-living or parasitic in nature. While protozoa can be an important source of food for animals like snails, they can also cause serious infections in humans. Protozoa can be transmitted to the body by eating contaminated food or water, person-to-person contact, or through the bite of an insect like a mosquito or fly. While many protozoan infections are more common in the tropics and subtropics, they can also affect people in temperate zones as well, a common example of protozoa is malaria and some sexually transmitted  infections.

Intestinal worms: Intestinal worms are living organisms with many cells such as; tapeworms, pinworms, and roundworms. Risk factors for intestinal worms include; living in or visiting an area known to have parasites , international travel, poor sanitation (for both food and water), poor hygiene, age — children are more likely to get infected  and HIV or AIDS. Symptoms of parasites include; diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, gas or bloating, dysentery (loose stools containing blood and mucus), rash or itching around the rectum or vulva, stomach pain or tenderness, feeling tired, weight loss and passing a worm in your stool.

ANGLE’s (LON:AGL) medical diagnostics business, Parsortix, has made another important breakthrough.

Its cell separation device can capture prostate cancer cells, it was revealed today, having already been used successfully to capture cultured breast cancer cells added to human blood.

The latest results support the thesis that the device can be used to screen for any solid tumour cancers without need for modification.

If this is indeed the case, then it marks the Parsortix technology out as potentially being far more effective than the existing cancer tests, which are cancer-specific and often return false negative results.     

ANGLE founder and chief executive, Andrew Newland, said: “The successful capture and identification of prostate cancer cells added to blood further substantiates the potential for the Parsortix separation technology to become a market-leading product, which is simple, effective and affordable.”

Parsortix is the jewel in the crown of the ANGLE portfolio. its small, devilishly simple separation device has all sorts of ramifications for the way the disease is treated and monitored.

For a start it may be possible using the device to determine which treatments are working, and which are not.  

Now this promises a huge improvement in the way chemotherapy is administered. 

The device also has the potential to monitor patients in remission, and to pick up early signs of the return of the cancer, ahead of the patient experiencing any symptoms.  

The earlier the treatment, the greater the likelihood the patient will survive.

Furthermore, it may be possible to develop a simple blood test to provide routine screening of healthy people to check for early signs of cancer ahead of any symptoms.

Although still in its infancy, Parsortix technology may ultimately have the ability to identify all the hard tumour types, without knowing in advance which cancer is expected.  

This is a step on from the existing means of identifying circulating cancer cells, where the tests are specific to each cancer type and even then are not totally reliable.  

“we think ours has a much more universal application – hopefully to all solid tumours,” said Newland in a recent interview with Proactive Investors.

The company is currently in discussions with leading cancer research groups including the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research in Manchester. 

The idea of this and other similar collaborations is to field test the device using blood taken from cancer patients. 

It also allows for development of the separation device and the supporting equipment in a real world setting. 

The potential clinical market is huge and is conservatively estimated by the company to be worth around US$4 billion annually in the United States alone.

However, to be sold for use in hospitals the device requires what’s called 510k approval from the all powerful US Food & Drug Administration and a CE Mark here in Europe. 

That process is likely to take a further 18 months of research, development and testing – and cost around £5 million.

Although the company is talking to potential partners, ANGLE may bankroll the development itself. 

It has options to achieve this, including the sale of one of the businesses in the company’s portfolio.

Alternatively it could fund the work by licensing selective use of the separation device to big pharmaceutical companies developing drugs for cancer as what’s called a companion diagnostic.

“that way we would get a big partner working with us, but wouldn’t give away the crown jewels,” Newland said.

“there is the potential to take the separation device rapidly into the research sales market as this does not require regulatory approval and that is our first target.” 

ANGLE owns 90 per cent of Parsortix.

Many times when you think lung cancer, many people think of the stereotype of an older person who has smoked all their life, but doctors say that just isn’t true.

24-year-old Jessica Watson of Rocky Mount is a mother of a 3 year old and never smoked a day in her life. about a year ago she had a cough she just couldn’t get rid of. Her co-worker convinced her to go to the doctor, and that’s when a specialist found a tumor in her left lung.

Watson couldn’t believe she had lung cancer. she says, “Most of the time when you think of lung cancer, you think of somebody that’s been smoking half their life. I never smoked a cigarette in my life. So I was like where did this come from. It surprised me.”

Watson had her entire left lung removed and underwent chemotherapy treatments after that. she is thankful that the cancer was detected in the early stages.

She says, “Sometimes you sit back and think why do things happen, but I’m glad because if I didn’t go to the doctor there’s no telling where I would be right now.”

One of Watson’s doctors at the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center in Greenville, Oncologist Paul Walker, says more and more “never smokers” are getting lung cancer. “It is becoming an epidemic. Anyone can get lung cancer. Unfortunately somebody who has never smoked can get it. many times no one thinks of lung cancer and therefore there’s a delayed diagnosis or they get blamed you must have done something you really did smoke.”

Walker also says another problem is that people ignore their symptoms because they don’t think lung cancer can happen to them. He hopes that stories like Watson’s will open the door for discussion about lung cancer and people will realize it doesn’t discriminate.

Only 15% of us survive five years or more while breast, prostate, and colon cancers have 90%, 99% and 65% survival rates respectively. 80% of newly diagnosed lung cancer cases are in never smokers or former smokers who had given up smoking decades ago. no one deserves to get lung cancer. We shouldn’t blame the victim. If blame is to be placed, it should be on tobacco companies who have put addidtives in cigarettes which are carcinogenic and make them more addictive. the Lung Cancer Alliance (lungcanceralliance.org) provides advocacy and patient support services for those who have or are at risk of lung cancer.

My Brother told me today that my mum might have lung cancer but ive not said anything.. and he sed she was telling him and my dad because she is coughing up blood etc.. and he sed if she has it she might not have long to live.. my mum is everything to me… soo is there a cure or anything? im really worried :'( x

Got lung cancer 5 years ago, i had a lung resection ,which is just cutting out the infected part( 1/2 of one lung), i was in and out of hospital in 4 1/2 days, i was 45 at the time so not that young and then i had chemotherapy for 3 months and have been clear ever since. i started going out jogging and excercising and now my lungs are in better condition than when i was 30, i did smoke for 30 odd years but not since the surgery, so there is hope for your mum, make sure she does what the docs say, chemo is brutal but works,or it did for me so good luck and god bless

SHE may have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but Rosemaree Willett counts herself lucky to have survived the disease.

The 54-year-old was diagnosed in April 2008 and is one of the survivors sharing their stories as part of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Ms Willett said after her menstrual cycle lasted three months she knew she had to seek medical help.

The mother of one said she can still clearly remember where she was when she got the call saying her fears had been confirmed.

“The day I was diagnosed I don’t even remember walking out of the supermarket,” Ms Willett said.

“normally I don’t let things worry me, but this sort of thing you tend to only hear about the bad cases. you don’t hear that they can cure people.”

The Silkstone resident said just days later she was undergoing treatment for the disease.

“I was lucky the cancer hadn’t metastasised,” Ms Willett said.

“As they caught it early there was no chemotherapy or radiation.

“I just had to have a hysterectomy.”

she said the diagnosis had changed her outlook on life and she was now proactive about encouraging others to have regular health check-ups, keeping in closer touch with family and “not putting much off”.

Ovarian Cancer Australia chair Paula Benson said the aim of the month was to ensure women knew as much about ovarian cancer symptoms as they did about breast cancer symptoms.

“this year more than 1200 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and, sadly, around 800 will die from the disease,” she said. “currently, 75 per cent of women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the advanced stages and don’t live beyond five years. And yet, if diagnosed early, the majority of those women can survive.”

People are also encouraged to hold an event on Teal Ribbon Day on February 23 to raise funds and awareness of the disease.
