Chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause infertility, is steadily rising in Los Angeles County and in the South Bay, according to figures released Tuesday.

County figures show there were 44,648 cases of chlamydia diagnosed in 2010, accounting for 78 percent of all STDs reported to the Department of Public Health, which publishes an annual report on the prevalence of these diseases.

In the Torrance health district, 1,383 cases of chlamydia were found last year, or 293 cases for every 100,000 residents – a 25 percent rise over 2006. In the Harbor Area (excluding Long Beach), there were 230 cases in 2006 compared to 332 last year, a 44 percent increase.

The group most susceptible to all types of STDs tracked by the county – chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and pelvic inflammatory disease – are young, black or Latino females. Two-thirds of all those diagnosed with chlamydia were black or Latino and female, and 80 percent were under the age of 29.

“This should be a wake-up call for all of us,” said Serena Josel, director of public affairs for Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, which runs a health center in Lawndale. “This should be cause to take a look at how we’re getting accurate information out there to young people.”

The county operates several public education programs, along with other community health groups. Parents in particular need to be in the loop, encouraging their children to get tested, Josel said.

The South region of the county, which includes Hawthorne and Gardena, had by far the highest rates of all STDs. Figures show more than 10,000 cases of chlamydia were diagnosed in 2010, about a quarter of all county cases.

Chlamydia is sometimes referred to as the “silent disease” because it can go undetected for years. Symptoms are usually mild or completely absent, particularly in men.

The disease is spread through sexual contact, including anal and oral, and can be easily passed among unknowing partners, health officials say.

If left untreated, chlamydia can cause infections in the uterus and fallopian tubes and lead to infertility and potentially fatal ectopic pregnancies. the disease also makes one more susceptible to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Efforts to improve the rate of STD testing may be a factor in the increased rates, health officials said. In 2009, the county launched a mail-in testing program for chlamydia and gonorrhea that allows people to receive tests in the mail and send them to the county.

The results are made available online or by phone about a week later, and resources for treatment are accessible online. the campaign targeted young women in particular.

The county has seen the rate of gonorrhea decline, but has yet to make headway with other diseases. In the South Bay, there were 1,351 cases of gonorrhea in 2006, compared to 1,047 in 2010, a 29 percent decline. Roughly two-thirds of the local cases were discovered in the Inglewood health district, figures show.

Across the county, there were about 9,500 cases of gonorrhea, split about evenly among men and women. more than 6,000 of those diagnosed were black or Latino.

Symptoms of gonorrhea can also be mild or nonexistent, but the bacterial disease can lead to infertility in both men and women.

Young people who are sexually active should be tested about once a year or more, depending on their number of partners, health officials said. most STDs are treatable with antibiotics.

Gonorrhea cases are up significantly in Erie County, ending a three-year decline for the sexually transmitted disease.

Two hundred and four gonorrhea cases were reported to the Erie County Department of Health during the first six months of 2011. That’s nearly three times more cases than were found during the first half of 2010.

Still, public-health officials aren’t ready to panic.

“The numbers so far in 2011 are not alarming,” said Charlotte Berringer, R.N., the county Health Department’s director of community health, pointing out that 2010 was “one of our better years for STDs.”

Gonorrhea cases had been on the decline in Erie County since 2007, when 521 were reported. It also was the year Erie County’s rates for gonorrhea and chlamydia, another common STD, set all-time highs.

Only 168 gonorrhea cases were reported in all of 2010.

Berringer said she doesn’t know why gonorrhea cases have increased in 2011. Cases of chlamydia also are on the rise, with 656 cases reported from January through June 2011, compared to 530 during the same period of 2010.

Three cases of syphilis, a more serious STD that can be life-threatening if not treated, were reported in Erie County in May and June. five cases have been reported in 2011, one more than the same period in 2010.

“We usually see between two and seven cases of syphilis a year, so that number is not unusual,” Berringer said.

Most STDs can be treated with antibiotics, but people often don’t realize they have one because symptoms aren’t always obvious, said Fred Havko, M.D., a Saint Vincent Health Center emergency physician.

“Women in particular might not have any symptoms of gonorrhea or chlamydia until later, when an infection develops in their pelvis,” Havko said. “By that time, it’s a pretty serious disease.”

Untreated chlamydia and gonorrhea can scar a woman’s fallopian tubes, which can cause infertility, Havko said.

Not having sex is the only foolproof way to avoid getting gonorrhea or chlamydia. But there are ways to reduce your risk of an STD if you are sexually active.

Symptoms of Chlamydia:

If you have chlamydia, chances are that you may exhibit few symptoms.
Symptoms of gonorrhea generally appear between 2 and 10 days after infection, although it could take as long as 30 days for your symptoms to appear. if you are a woman and are suffering from gonorrhea, you may experience bleeding after sex and frequent, painful urination.
I am a gay man that is currently in, what I thought, was a mutually monogamous relationship. I have just been treated for Chlamydia. My symptoms were noticed in my penis (slight burning and mucous discharge). My question is, how is chlamydia transmitted? If the bacteria was present in my penis, how was it transmitted there? could I have gotten it from penetrating my infected partner’s anus? could I have gotten it from my infected partner penetrating my anus and it travel to my penis? could I have gotten it by my infected partner performing oral sex on me? could I have gotten it from performing oral sex on my infected partner? (Is it like a cold, once the bacteria is in your body it can go anywhere and spread as such?) Because the relationship was suppose to be monogamous, we were having unprotected sex. I am also curious as to how he got it-if he was having unprotected sex with someone else (other than unprotected oral sex). thank you so much for your help-very little information exists about this in places I have looked online-especially specifically for a gay man!

Nonethless, you stayed with her knowing it wasn’t her fault necessarily and began a real relationship.. After one year you moved in with her, and have been advancing the relationship more and more every day. She is madly in love with you and you tell her she is your other half.

Well, back in Feb (after almost 1.5yrs together) and again in March you (the boyfriend) developed a rash on your genital area but we both blew it off b/c we were totally monogomous and thought it was actually from too much sex..Well, your girl friend eventually goes in for regular pap smear and mentions these rashes to her Dr just b/c she remembered wanted to verify it could have been from friction.. (your girlfriend hasn’t had any issues/rashes/symptoms of anything) but then she gets a call that the blood test they took as precaution came back pos. for herpes..

Now, how would you handle that news being him in this situation. I have never cheated on him, I have had a limited amount of sex partners, I have never had symptoms, but I’m not blaming him. I’m just afraid he will blame this on me b/c of the past what happened. It very well could be from me, but it could be from him as well, as my Dr put it, ‘there is no way of knowing unless neither of you have ever had intercourse, or oral sex ever in your life’.. but i just think it’s strange he didn’t have any symptoms until Feb and I still haven’t had anything wrong down there.. I know it can lie dormant for months to yrs, I’ve been doing so much research so I can be educated when I break this news to him.. I plan on printing out facts about this condition and even taking him to a Dr appt with me after he calms down to have them explain all of this as well, sometimes its easier to believe the facts hearing from a Dr…. but I can’t help but be afraid he’s going to freak out, hate me and leave me. we need to support eachother through this. After all, it really is merely a viral skin condition that happens to affect an area people don’t want affected (it can actually be anywhere on your body legs, thighs, arms, face etc)

I freaked out at first too so I understand if he will.. I just don’t want him to point the finger at me, who ever gave this to either of us, probably didn’t know they had it either.

Can any males give me advice as to how u would handle this, please don’t be rude, and be serious and honest, but if it’s mean please go to another question b/c I’m very emotional about this still, thanks.
