When they tested my urine, it showed that I do have a bladder infection but it also showed sugar of 172. They are sending me for blood work on Monday. Needless to say, I am in shock. I am a 44 yr old woman, am not over weight in the least, I don't smoke, I eat extremely healthy all the time, nor do I appear to have any of the typical background of a diabetic other than I do have hereditary high cholesterol (230). but it's mostly been high HDL's (good cholestrol). Is it possible that I have some other serious illness that is messing with my pancreas/liver/kidneys, etc.? Is it more likely I could have diabetes? the only symptom I have is dry mouth/thirst. I'm pretty scared at the moment so any insight you can offer is appreciated.

Diabetes can show up later in life, and it's not necessarily genetic. Other things can affect it, such as, interestingly enough, if you've had a large baby.

Hello, that is odd …my friend who is 23 has the EXACT same issue right now!!she had a bladder infection(she was sick as a dog with it too) and sugar in her urine…and on the good note…everything turned out FINE..she didn't have any type dibetic issues or aything, she too was freaked out!I am sure you will be ok sweety…like I say her issue with identical to yours,not overweight,never smoked etc….

First off, this isn't a death sentence and because you caught this early chances are you'll be feeling fine in no time. Sounds like your pretty healthy so that's in your favor as well. As one of the answers mentioned a bladder infection could have tip the scales a bit and messed things up with your system. A bladder infection can make you pee forever and the result of this could be increased thirst. if in fact you have become a diabetic chances are that your pancreas and worn out or slowed down and is unable to submit enough insulin to handle the blood sugar. I'm not sure of other conditions that might cause similar symptoms. Other symptoms of diabetes include extreme fatigue, headaches, blurred vision, loss of appetite, nausea, irritability, loss of energy, and at it worse can cause extreme stomach pain and pain in your sides, legs, arms and eventually vomiting and you'll pass out. I've been a diabetic of over 33 years and I require insulin shots. However, if you have diabetis you may only require pills, diet and exercise.
