<p>Twelve Iowa football players &#119;&#101;&#114;&#101; hospitalized &#111;&#110; Monday suffering &#102;&#114;&#111;&#109; exertional rhabdomyolysis.</p>
<p>The Cedar Rapids Gazette first-reported the player&#8217;s condition &#111;&#110; its website Tuesday.</p>
<p>Rhabdomyolysis &#105;&#115; &#097; condition when &#116;&#104;&#101;&#114;&#101; &#105;&#115; an acute breakdown of muscles fibers &#097;&#110;&#100; myoglobin &#105;&#115; released into the bloodstream. &#105;&#110; severe cases, it &#099;&#097;&#110; &#099;&#097;&#117;&#115;&#101; permanent kidney failure.</p>
<p>The identity of the players hasn&#8217;t &#098;&#101;&#101;&#110; released &#098;&#117;&#116; those admitted &#119;&#101;&#114;&#101; &#100;&#111;&#105;&#110;&#103; fine &#097;&#110;&#100; the school released &#097; statement &#111;&#110; Tuesday that &#115;&#097;&#105;&#100; that the students had &#098;&#101;&#101;&#110; hospitalized &#097;&#110;&#100; &#119;&#101;&#114;&#101; &#100;&#111;&#105;&#110;&#103; well.</p>
<p>“The student-athletes &#119;&#101;&#114;&#101; admitted throughout the course of Monday evening,” the University of Iowa Hospital &#097;&#110;&#100; Clinic staff physician &#115;&#097;&#105;&#100; &#105;&#110; the statement. “All of the individuals are responding well &#116;&#111; treatment &#097;&#115; of Tuesday morning. All are &#105;&#110; safe &#097;&#110;&#100; stable condition. At this time &#119;&#101; are not sure when any of the individuals will be discharged. Hospital discharge will be &#111;&#110; &#097; case by case basis.”</p>
<p>According &#116;&#111; the school, the players &#119;&#101;&#114;&#101; involved &#105;&#110; NCAA allowable workouts &#097;&#110;&#100; the symptoms they suffered &#119;&#101;&#114;&#101; likely attributed &#116;&#111; one of the workouts.</p>
<p>Iowa athletic director Gary Barta &#115;&#097;&#105;&#100; that head coach Kirk Ferentz, &#119;&#104;&#111; was &#111;&#110; &#097; recruiting visit, was aware of the situation.</p>
