my dog is a toy poodle, her nipples are swollen, and she dosnt sleep like she used to. she used to sleep on her stomach, now she sleeps on her side! oh…and all she wants to do is eat and sleep! shes usually very playful and energetic, but now shes a lazy girl!!! could she be pregnant, or is that normal for a year old toy poodle?

If she is, she is at major risk for health complications during and after the birth.

See a vet immediatly, and consider aborting the pups.

the signs of pregnancy in a dog is

1) enlarged nipples
2) clingy to her owner (wanting more cuddles etc)
3) change in apetite (usually they eat more and 48 hours before giving birth she will go off her food completely
4) finding a nesting place and begin building a nest (shredding paper etc etc
5 weight gain
6) more lazyier
7) increased urination

if your dog is pregnant take her to the vets asap even if your not sure a one year old can safetly have a healthy pregnancy although it is not advised i have had 2 dogs at a year old been pregnant and they were absolutly fine hope this helps

Take her to the Vet and get her Spayed…that will solve this problem and you won't have to worry about this in the future.

No it is not normal for her to have swollen nipples. and the fact that her demeanor has changed as well could be a warning sign. is she eating normally and going to the bathroom normally? a dog that is pregnant will usually not show many signs for the first couple of weeks and then some will get some morning sickness for a short time. then their nipples will start growing and you may notice some swelling in them but not drastic until closer to delivery. the milk usually comes in, in time for delivery. My dog maybe slept a bit more but not anything unusual. she would still get up and run around and play. if she is pregnant, and has pups inside, she is not going to be able to comfortably lie on her stomach like she used to. do you have reason to believe she is pregnant? Was she in heat? do you have an unnuetered male dog in the house? Did you see them breed? or did she get out of the house and take off and possibly get mated by another stray? another option could be that she may have some type of infection or condition going on in her nipples. if she is lethargic and is sleeping a lot, it could mean she doesn't feel well. I would make an appointment with your vet ASAP. they can do an x-ray or ultrasound to determine if she is pregnant or not. It's not cheap but worth it for the peace of mind. if she is pregnant and acting like that, her electrolytes might be off or her blood sugar could be low, especially if she is not eating enough, and if she is carrying a large litter for her size. if the xray or ultra sound comes back negative the vet can advise you as to what needs to be done next. I wouldn't wait on something like this, especially if you don't know what's wrong with her. there are sites on the internet that will give you information on dog pregnancy. Don't be uneducated if you are going to have an unspayed female dog and allow her to run around free, especially when she is in heat. Dogs that small can have complications during delivery if a pup is to big, you need to be prepared. I would visit my vet as soon as possible.

No it isn't normal for any dog of any age. I take it she's not spayed and she's had contact with unneutered male dogs? Have you any idea when she may have been neutered? when did her season start, and was it her first?

Your dog does sound kind of pregnant. is her abdomen swollen at all? Dog are only pregnant for 63-65 days so you don't have a lot of time to sort out what you're going to do. if her nipples are swollen, she's already half way through her term, and too late for a termination.

I strongly advise you to take the dog to the vet, since this is the only way you're going to find out for sure if she's a) pregnant and b) in good health. You'll also need a TON advice about caring for a pregnant dog and puppies. and if she isn't pregnant, you need to know what's going on here – and you need to get her spayed asap!!
