When the pain becomes almost chronic. My best friend had gall bladder problems and she kept putting off the surgery. a scan showed she needed the surgery but she had kids and was worried about how "everything would get done around the house." She actually took prescription pain killers for many months. Finally it got so bad that they took her by ambulance and she needed emergency surgery. afterwards they told her that her gall bladder was completely yellow (meaning totally infected). Pls. don't wait that long. if you have chronic and severe pain on a daily basis, speak to your doctor and get his/her input. then when you have all facts as is related to you and know the risks vs. benefits, you can make an educated decision. Pls. don't wait till it's a life threatening emergency, and have to take all those painkillers. My friend was almost addicted by the time the surgery was done.

Some people experience pain different than others. My mom has a very high pain tolerance. She never had medicine for all 4 of us kids. Other than giving birth, she had never been in the hospital.

Well, one day she was at work and feeling a little discomfort on her side. She didn't think much of it, but later that day she got one sharp pain. so painful she knew something was wrong. She called her dr and he said her symptoms were serious and to come in. She called my dad and he took her to the dr. the dr immediately sent her to the hospital. they did a scan and found she had gall stones that needed to be removed. She went straight into surgery because of the size of the gall stones. When they got in there, it turned out her gall bladder was gain green. it was very serious. the dr later explained that most people would have had serious pain before my mom did.

So if your having pain, you need to have a dr check it out because everyone takes pain differently.

I don't believe in living with pain–think about it. My father is so much happier now that he had his gall bladder removed. if the pain has been bad enough that you ended up in the ER–it's bad enough.

BALTIMORE — Fresh off a pair of disappointing losses to the Yankees and Red Sox, the Orioles took another, more costly, blow on Thursday afternoon, this one knocking out the entire right side of their infield.

First baseman Derrek Lee (left oblique strain) and second baseman Brian Roberts were put on the disabled list, although given Roberts’ injury — concussion-like symptoms — the Orioles were able to place him on the newly enacted seven-day DL rather than the 15-day DL.

Neither player made himself available to the media following the announcement, although Lee said earlier in the afternoon that he understood that his presence on the active roster — while the team evaluated him on a daily basis — was handcuffing the Orioles’ bench.

“I understand the situation they are in,” Lee said of an O’s bullpen that exhausted every reliever — including Thursday’s originally scheduled starter, Jeremy Guthrie — in Wednesday’s 4-1 loss to the Yankees in 15 innings. “And at the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for your team.”

The veteran first baseman had been bothered by discomfort in his left side for weeks, but he aggravated the muscle further while running the bases during his first at-bat at Fenway Park on Monday. Roberts also started feeling the ill effects of his diagnosis in that game — which the Orioles lost despite holding a 6-0 lead in the sixth inning — following a headfirst slide into first base after he hit a ball off starter Daisuke Matsuzaka’s midsection in the top of the first.

Roberts, Baltimore’s leadoff hitter, was batting .221 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 39 games. he got off to a hot start this season but has struggled in May, which he opened with a 4-for-45 stretch through 11 games. Roberts had hit safely in his past three contests, going 5-for-15, before his headaches were brought to manager Buck Showalter’s attention.

While Lee’s trip to the DL was almost expected, given the nature of his injury, the news for Roberts is more surprising and potentially more devastating, given that the second baseman’s 2010 season ended due to a concussion from which he took months to fully recover.

“Any time you’re dealing with a concussion and heads and stuff, you’re concerned about it,” Showalter said of Roberts, who was limited to just 59 games last year due to a herniated disc in his lower back. “I was talking to Brian. this isn’t anything like the symptoms he was feeling last year. That’s good, but you still have those symptoms that we’re going to make sure that we have our arms around before we go forward.

“We’re hoping that it clears up and the doctors feel fine about it, and he’s a player [activated for] Tuesday.”

The timetable for Lee isn’t as optimistic; the first day he would be eligible to complete his stint on the DL — which is retroactive to Tuesday — is June 1. Lee, who was hitting .231 with 14 RBIs and 41 strikeouts, had tried to state his case to avoid the DL, citing his improvement on Wednesday.

But Lee hasn’t made any significant strides in recovery since then, and the Orioles — who went through a similar situation before losing shortstop J.J. Hardy to the DL for a month — weren’t willing to risk further injury.

“Talking to medical people, I don’t want to lose Derrek,” Showalter said. “I’d like to have him. he impacts our team in a lot of ways, but taking a chance on this?

“In my experience with these [injuries] over the years, there is usually a lot more going on there than you think. I hope not. I think there’s some talk about taking some form of X-rays or something that show certain inflammations to try and judge how bad it is.”

Given the dire straits of their bullpen following Wednesday’s loss, the O’s recalled left-hander Troy Patton and righty Chris Jakubauskas from Triple-A Norfolk to take the roster spots vacated by Lee and Roberts. Both pitchers were demoted after the game, and the O’s are expected to recall outfielder Nolan Reimold and purchase second baseman Ryan Adams’ contract from Triple-A Norfolk prior to Friday’s series opener against the Nationals.

The first moves of the day left the Orioles with a two-man bench for Thursday’s game: Luke Scott and catcher Matt Wieters, who was scheduled to get a rare day off.

Statistically, in both human and animal medicine, preventive care has a higher ratio of positive outcomes than reactive. in addition, early detection and treatment of disease or illness provide a much higher comfort level for people and their pets. it is also a less costly way to care for yourself and your companions. think about it: If you identify a problem early on, it is less advanced, and there are fewer complications. the sooner treatment is initiated, the greater the likelihood of a good recovery, and the less likely there will be secondary illnesses.

There are several disease processes that I see in practice on a daily basis in which the clients who participate in preventive efforts for their companions not only greatly improve the quality of life for their dogs and cats but also greatly minimize their veterinary expenses.

Heartworm prevention is often neglected. Heartworm is a life-threatening disease that is passed to both dogs and cats from mosquitoes. it is an issue in our area, and indoor pets also are at risk. There is no treatment for cats. for dogs, the treatment involves the use of arsenic, and is risky and costly. Patients need to be strictly cage-confined for several weeks following medications. for a large breed dog, treatment is almost $2,000. A year of preventive care with Heartgard for a small dog is about $55. That is less than $5 per month. for a large dog, it is less than $7 a month. Trifexis is another preventive option – it is oral and also includes flea protection. these same products also protect against some internal parasites.

Routine exams at least once a year for every pet are really important. in addition to identifying disease in the early stages, this also helps to make sure your companion is receiving appropriate care for his or her particular life stage. As your companion becomes a senior, twice-yearly evaluations as well as laboratory panels are recommended. Remember that animals age much faster than we do, and changes in organ systems can happen rapidly. Animals, especially cats, are very good at hiding illness. often you will not see symptoms of a problem until it is advanced. it is all about identifying issues in the early stages, because early detection of illness leads to better outcomes.

Dental care is a huge problem in veterinary medicine, with 80 percent of patients having some level of dental disease. it often goes undetected, and many clients are fearful of having their pets sedated for dental cleanings. Dental disease is not just confined to the mouth. As oral infections progress, bacteria from the mouth goes into the bloodstream and affects organs such as the kidney, liver and heart. There are some easy steps you can take today to help prevent your dog or cat from developing significant dental disease. first, feed a high-quality diet and eliminate or limit people food. A good diet will leave less residue on the teeth. Provide some level of routine oral care; there are many options available including brushing; treats and chews; oral drops and rinses; oral paste; and products to add to water. Schedule dental cleanings at the earliest point that this procedure is recommended. When a cleaning is done early on in the disease process, the anesthetic time is shorter, extractions are less likely, and it slows down the progression of oral pathology so your cherished companion experiences less pain overall.

Do not feed your pets people food. This is a common practice that frequently results in vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and generalized digestive upset. Blood work and X-rays are commonly taken. Antibiotics and a bland diet are common treatments. Many patients have to be hospitalized for pancreatitis and other problems. This is a lot to spend and have your companion go through because he or she shared your holiday ham.

Not only is important to try to prevent disease, but also to act quickly when a problem arises. This helps minimize the chance of secondary illnesses and provides comfort for your dog and/or cat as soon as possible. again, when problems are treated in the early stages, there is a much greater chance for a positive outcome. By acting on problems in the early stages, you often minimize costs because often a shorter cycle of treatment is needed. There is a growing awareness about cervical cancer, thanks to massive campaigns in the country featuring many high profile women, including Presidential sister and TV host Kris Aquino and businesswoman Cristalle Henares of the Belo Group.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in the country. Every year, about 6,000 Filipinas are diagnosed with cervical cancer. an estimated 12 Filipinas die of deadly disease on a daily basis. Worldwide, about half a million women are diagnosed with cervical cancer.

The good news is that it is a highly preventable disease, thanks to lifestyle modification. The first step in battling this disease is to raise awareness, to make the many women vulnerable to the disease more aware of the symptoms and causes of the cancer.

Cervical cancer is caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), specifically type 16 and 18. some factors that have been shown as conducive to the development of this deadly cancer are early sexual intercourse, unprotected sex with multiple partners, having sex with a partner who engages in sexual intercourse with other women and other high risk sexual activities, smoking and low social economic status. The transmission of the HPV virus is the most common sexually transmitted virus among women.

Vaginal bleeding is a sign of an HPV infection or cervical cancer. other symptoms include pelvic pain, loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss, as well as leg and back pain. If left untreated, it can develop into other malignant forms of cancer of the cervix, vulva, and other parts of the body. it can affect a woman’s fertility.

This May is Cervical Cancer Awareness and Prevention month. Sponsored by the Department of Health, there will be free nationwide medical screening for this disease. With a simple pap smear, early detection of the disease can be done to increase the rate of a successful recovery.

Touted at “Babae! Mahalaga Ka!” the free screening will commence at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center in Manila and will be available at 58 government health centers all over the country.

Free screening is every Monday for women of Metro Manila, Wednesdays for the rest of Luzon, Tuesdays for Mindanao residents and Wednesday for those who live in the Visayas region. The free screening is open to women aged 30 to 45 years of age.

Regional kick-off gatherings are also set at the  Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital, Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, and Davao Medical Center.

I am 25 and am sure there is something wrong with me. I last had my period and it lasted about 3 1/2 weeks. after it ended I have been having bloody discharge, sometimes brown, when I wipe on a daily basis. I also have been very ache around my pelvic area, and hurts during intercourse.I do not have a spleen so I have a very weekend immune system, so I can “catch” things easier and have nothing to fight off any infections with out antibiotics.I am not currently sexually active and was screened in the past 6 months for STD’s but have had intercourse once since the then. when I look up my symptoms I seem to always come back to Cervical Cancer – STD infection – or some other kind of plevic area infection. I do not have insurance, so I was wanted opinions on weather or not you think i should go to the ER? is this severe enough to do to the ER? and do you think they would just treat it lightly or actually screen for std and or cancer ?I just don’t want to go to the ER and they tell me oh well you need to do to the Gyno when I don’t have insurance and can’t afford it, but I am getting a little worried since the symptoms won’t let up and it’s been 2 months now. any advice is greatly appreciated.
