Enfield pensioner Susan Hughes who moved to Spain killed by sandfly bite

AN Enfield hotelier who moved to Spain with her husband to enjoy a retirement has died after contracting a deadly disease from a sandfly.

Susan Hughes, 67, who moved to Malaga with husband Tony in 2004, died of black fever – a parasitic disease extremely rare in the UK – which she got in August through the saliva of the fly which had bitten her.

After being rushed to hospital, doctors gave her a blood transfusion but were unable to save her. The mother-of-two passed away on September 11.

She developed black blotches on her arms and chest and scabs on the roof of her mouth – typical symptoms of the deadly disease, which is the second-biggest parasitic killer in the world, after malaria.

Mr Hughes said that his wife’s immune system was vulnerable because of a liver transplant she had in 1983 – she had been given just six weeks to live before having the operation.

He said: “They tried everything but she couldn’t fight it because her immune system was low from the liver transplant.

“It’s just a shame we came to Spain for a good life, and yet if we’d stayed in the UK she’d have still been alive.

“She did have a chance to enjoy it and we had a good life together – it’s just a shame it was so short.”

The couple met in Wolverhampton in 1983, just months before she had the liver operation that was to grant her 28 extra years of life.

After the operation the couple moved to Wales and ran a hotel in Llandudno, Wales, until deciding to take early retirement in Spain – spending two years living in a caravan while their house in Malaga was built.

A tasty treat is helping battle a deadly disease in Lackawanna County. Pizza by Pappas is raising money for pancreatic cancer research.

Mary Coolican’s family knows the hurt the deadly disease can cause.

Coolican recalled, “My mother died of pancreatic cancer at age 61, and had no symptoms before she got sick.”

So Coolican became a volunteer with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. now she’s teaming up with the crew at Pizza by Pappas on Washington Avenue in Scranton.

Pizza by Pappas Co-Owner Bill Sheakoski remarked, “It’s really a terrible cancer. they all are. But I mean, this is one that really deserves the recognition and the awareness that hopefully fundraisers like ours can provide.”

Organizers tell us 50% of every pizza purchase here Tuesday and Wednesday will help out the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. so the more pizzas you buy, the better.

And even though pancreatic cancer has only a 6% survival rate, volunteers say money for research is severely lacking.

Coolican explained, “It is one of the least funded by the National Cancer Institute. I think they only receive 2% of the funding. Yet it’s the fourth deadliest cancer in the United States.”

Sheakoski noted, “They don’t always get the recognition that a lot of the other organizations do. And we just wanted to help out.”

So Pizza by Pappas is encouraging everyone to swing by for a pizza pie. Their goal is to unload at least 1,000 pizzas over the next two days to help fight pancreatic cancer.

Sheakoski added, “It’s a win-win situation. It’s the easiest fundraiser you can do. We don’t ask you for anything. just come down- have lunch, have dinner- and we’ll donate the money on your behalf.”

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will also host a Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Night on November 27th.

43 people are being urged by the Haywood County Health Department to undergo treatment for rabies.  this after they say a baby raccoon, that was treated like a pet, dies of the deadly disease.

Health officials say the family picked up the baby raccoon on the side of the road and cared for it.

Since it died of rabies the health department wants those who handled it to get the rabies treatments.

In North Carolina it is illegal to have a wild animal as a pet.  Wildlife officials say when it comes to taking in a wild animal, especially one like a raccoon which is prone to rabies, you’re playing with fire.

“I am very sympathetic with what they’ve done.  I’m sure they thought they were doing the right thing when they picked up a baby raccoon that didn’t have a mother around, these are the consequences,” says Mike caraway, a wildlife biologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

Haywood County health officials say this is the first positive rabid raccoon found in the county since 2008.

Incidentally this is the second mass post rabies exposure incident in Haywood County this summer.  Health officials say last month 31 people were treated to prevent rabies after it was discovered there was a bat in their cabin.

The Haywood County Health Department says that about 43 residents who may have been exposed to rabies as a result of a baby raccoon a family was caring for that later died and tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon died of rabies infection on Aug. 13. Prior to its death it was handled by many adults and children during the time that it was not yet showing symptoms. The letter advised any person who may have been exposed to the raccoon between June 21 and August 16 to be seen by their doctor or health care provider for a rabies Post Exposure Prophylaxis assessment.

This is the second incident since early July where dozens of people may have been exposed to rabies through situations that could have been prevented.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  website reports, “Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. The vast majority of rabies cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) each year occur in wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes.

The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death. The early symptoms of rabies in people are similar to that of many other illnesses, including fever, headache, and general weakness or discomfort. As the disease progresses, more specific symptoms appear and may include insomnia symptoms, anxiety, confusion, slight or partial paralysis, excitation, hallucinations, agitation, hypersalivation (increase in saliva), difficulty swallowing, and hydrophobia (fear of water). Death usually occurs within days of the onset of these symptoms.
