Thank you.

About 90% of gall bladder disease provoke no symptoms at all. If problems do develop, the chance of developing pain is about 2% per year for the first 10 years after stone formation, after which the chance for developing symptoms declines . On average, symptoms take about 8 years to develop. The reason for the decline in incidence after 10 years is not known, although some doctors suggest that "younger," smaller stones may be more likely to cause symptoms than larger ones.

Erie County’s number of reported flu cases is expected to decrease for the fourth straight week.

But it doesn’t mean flu season is finished, said Charlotte Berringer, R.N., director of community health for the Erie County Department of Health.

“Oh, no. We typically see flu cases through the end of May,” Berringer said. “All this tells us is that fewer people are getting tested and testing positive for flu.”

Berringer said no flu season is normal, but this season is more typical than the swine flu outbreak in fall 2009.

Not as many people are getting the flu. only 768 cases have been reported in Erie County this season compared to 1,587 cases during the outbreak.

This season also started in earnest around New Year’s Day. Flu season usually arrives here between January and March.

“This season started just a little earlier than normal and its peak was where we usually see it,” Berringer said.

Thirty-four cases were reported to the county Health Department this week through Friday at 3:30 p.m. It’s a decline from 48 cases the week before and 90 cases the week ending March 12.

Though the reported number of cases continues to drop, local physicians are still seeing patients with flu-like symptoms.

“We have seen a steady number in recent weeks,” said Tony Snow, M.D., a member of the Erie County Board of Health and medical director of Community Health Net. “It’s not as many as we had geared up for at the start of the season, but flu isn’t gone.”

Flu vaccine remains available, but demand isn’t what it was in the fall of 2009 during the swine flu outbreak, said Carla Picardo, M.D., a Health Board member and obstetrician/gynecologist with Erie Women’s Health Partners.

“We’ve seen a lot of pregnant women refuse flu shots this season,” Picardo said. “They were knocking down our doors last (season).”

balancedhealthtoday.com http balancedhealthtoday.com Symptoms: About 90% of gallstones cause no symptoms. There is a very small (2%) chance of developing pain during the first 10 years after gallstones form. After 10 years, the chance for developing symptoms declines. on average, symptoms take about 8 years to develop. the reason for the decline in symptoms after 10 years is not known, although some doctors suggest that “younger,” smaller stones may be more likely to cause symptoms than larger, older ones. Acalculous gallbladder disease will often cause symptoms similar to those of gallbladder stones. Biliary Pain or Colic the mildest and most common symptom of gallbladder disease is intermittent pain called biliary colic, which occurs either in the mid- or the right portion of the upper abdomen. Symptoms may be fairly nonspecific. A typical attack has several features: • the primary symptom is typically a steady gripping or gnawing pain in the upper right abdomen near the rib cage, which can be severe and can radiate to the upper back. some patients with biliary colic experience the pain behind the breast bone. • Nausea or vomiting may occur. • Changing position, taking over-the-counter pain relievers, and passing gas do not relieve the symptoms. • Biliary colic typically disappears after 1 to several hours. if it persists beyond this point, acute cholecystitis or more serious conditions may be present. balancedhealthtoday.com balancedhealthtoday.com

Sexual Discrimination and Lyme Disease

Much as we might like to think otherwise, sexual discrimination is still all around us, even at the doctor’s office. Lyme disease is often underdiagnosed in women because not everyone who contracts it develops the familiar “bull’s eye” lesion, which has long been associated as the main identifying factor of lyme disease. Much of the time, the patient will not even realize that a tick bite has even occurred, making diagnosis that much more difficult.

When hormonal levels drop at the end of the menstrual cycle, the symptoms of lyme disease in women become that much more pronounced. While many doctors who are very familiar with the appearance of lyme disease symptoms and how they affect women will be able to discern whether or not the discomfort and other symptoms are related to lyme disease, many doctors are unable to do this and simply point the finger at “female problems.”

Lyme Disease and Pregnancy

The first choice antibiotic in the treatment of lyme disease is doxycycline because of its high level of effectiveness in this case. Since it is also harmful to the fetus, it is not administered in the case where the patient is pregnant. instead, if the disease is caught early enough, erythromycin will be administered because even though it is not as effective, it has the benefit of not being harmful to the fetus. Antibiotics are given orally in the case of early detection, as it is believed that lyme disease does not cross the placental barrier, but some doctors prefer to give antibiotics intravenously as an added precaution.

If the lyme disease has progressed to the later stages before a diagnosis has been made, the treatment regimen is going to be somewhat different. Rather than simple taking the oral antibiotic and possibly an IV antibiotic, late stage lyme disease treatment in pregnant women will almost always rely on intravenous injections of antibiotics. this is done to provide a more intense treatment in order to help protect the fetus.

If you suffer from bloating, chronic headaches, general fatigue, diarrhea, eczema or a number of other symptoms, you may have an allergy or food intolerance. One of the most common food allergies or intolerances is an allergy to wheat. unfortunately for someone who is intolerant to wheat, wheat is found in many foods. Food manufacturers use it as a cheap substitute for a large number of substances more expensive. The good news is that a wheat-free diet can help combat all the symptoms.

it is also possible that you can only have intolerance soft wheat. in fact, many people eat wheat as your body begins to decline slightly. Thus, although wheat is said to be very healthy people, many end wheat intolerance. If sometimes dizziness, nausea, sneezing without apparent reason or meets inexplicable pains and pains then your body might be rejecting wheat slightly, without even realizing it. most people tend to dismiss these symptoms, thinking they have a mild cold, worked very hard that day or just too tired. If you are intolerant to wheat, but wheat-free diet can help relieve symptoms, if, unlike most people, you may realize that the processing of wheat is a real problem.

on the other hand, you may need a full-blown allergy to wheat. If you are experiencing severe chronic headaches, eczema, psoriasis or any other symptoms, more intense, your body can completely reject all wheat products.

A sometimes, if you have a mild intolerance, might be able to go back to eating wheat over time, but not likely. If you have a full allergy Wheat, no but there is no way I can return. Your body is simply not allowed to re-introduce wheat products.
Rabies is a disease humans may get from being bitten by an animal infected with the rabies virus. Rabies has been recognized for over 4,000 years. Yet, despite great advances in diagnosing and preventing it, today rabies is almost always deadly in humans who contract it and do not receive treatment.

Rabies can be totally prevented. you must recognize the exposure and promptly get appropriate medical care before you develop the symptoms of rabies.

Where rabies is found: Human rabies is quite rare in the United States. only 27 cases have been reported in people in the United States since 1990. Yet in some areas of the world (for example, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America), human rabies is much more common.

The incidence of rabies in people parallels the incidence in the animal kingdom. The great strides that have been made in controlling the disease in animals in the United States and in other developed countries is directly responsible for this decline in human rabies.

Although rabies in humans is very rare in the United States, between 16,000 and 39,000 people receive preventive medical treatment each year after being exposed to a potentially rabid animal. some regions of the country have more cases of rabies than others do. Rabies in wildlife accounts for greater than 85% of animal rabies in the United States.

Animals that carry rabies: Raccoons are the most common wild animals infected with rabies in the United States. Skunks, foxes, bats, and coyotes are the other most frequently affected.

Bats are the most common animals responsible for the transmission of human rabies in the United States, accounting for more than half of human cases since 1980, and 74% since 1990. Rabid bats have been reported in all states except Hawaii.

Cats are the most common domestic animals with rabies in the United States. Dogs are the most common domestic rabid animals worldwide. almost any wild or domestic animal can potentially get rabies, but it is very rare in small rodents (rats, squirrels, chipmunks) and lagomorphs (rabbits and hares). Large rodents (beavers, woodchucks/groundhogs) have been found to have rabies in some areas of the United States. Additionally, fish, reptiles, and birds are not known to carry the rabies virus.

For a human to get rabies, 2 things must happen. First, you must have contact with a rabid animal. second, the contact must allow for the transmission of infected material, which will involve exposure to the saliva of the infected animal usually through a bite or scratch.

Contaminated tissue in the rabid animal includes saliva. other potentially infectious tissue is in the brain or nerve tissue. The virus is transmitted only when the virus gets into bite wounds, open cuts in your skin, or onto mucous membranes (for example, into your eyes or your mouth). The virus then spreads from the site of the exposure to your brain and eventually spreads throughout your body’s major organs.

Moreover, bites are the most common source of transmission. Scratches by infected animals are far less likely to cause infection but are still considered a potential source of rabies transmission. Bites or scratches are often not confirmed in cases of human rabies traced to bats. therefore, treatment might be necessary after a close encounter with a bat.

In the 20 cases (since 1990) of human rabies associated with a bat, a definite history of a bat bite could be confirmed in only 1 case. it is unclear how the virus was transmitted in the other cases perhaps by an undetectable bite.

Rabies has rarely been transmitted by other means. Examples include inhaling a large amount of bat secretions in the air of a cave by 2 cave explorers and inhaling the concentrated virus in laboratory workers studying rabies.

Animals infected with rabies may appear sick, crazed, or vicious. this is the origin of the phrase “mad dog.” However, animals infected with rabies may also appear overly friendly, docile, or confused. They may even appear completely normal.

Seeing a normally nocturnal wild animal during the day (for example, a bat or a fox) or seeing a normally shy wild animal that appears strange or even friendly should raise suspicion that the animal may have rabies.

Furthermore, the average incubation period (time from infection to time of development of symptoms) in humans is 30-60 days, but it may range from less than 10 days to several years.

Most people first develop symptoms of pain, tingling, or itching shooting from the bite site (or site of virus entry). Nonspecific complaints of fevers, chills, fatigue, muscle aches, and irritability may accompany these complaints. Early on, these complaints may seem like any virus, except for the shooting sensations from the bite site. Gradually, however, you will become extremely ill, developing a variety of symptoms, including high fever, confusion, agitation, and eventually seizures and coma.

Typically, people with rabies develop irregular contractions and spasms of the breathing muscles when exposed to water (this is termed hydrophobia). They may demonstrate the same response to a puff of air directed at them (termed aerophobia). by this point, they are obviously extremely ill. Eventually, the various organs of the body are affected, and the person dies despite support with medication and a respirator.

A rarer form of rabies, paralytic rabies, has been linked to vampire bat bites outside of the United States. in this form, the person who was bitten develops a paralysis, or inability to move the part of the body that was bitten. this spreads gradually throughout the body, and the person ultimately dies. Hydrophobia is less common in paralytic rabies than in classic rabies.

When we are beyond a certain age and we find that there is a decline in our memory, many of us may fear that we are suffering from dementia symptoms.

The idea of losing our mental abilities is terrifying to many of us. The good news is that most people do suffer a certain amount of memory impairment as we age. Learning the symptoms of dementia can help us identify when it is dementia and get the help we need for our loved ones or ourselves.

Unlike regular memory loss due to age, there are specific issues that come with dementia.

There are several types of dementia including vascular dementia and Alzheimer?s disease and the symptoms can vary depending on which one of these conditions we have.

Here is a look at these two disorders and the symptoms that you or someone you love may show if either of these two disorders are present.

Alzheimer?s Disease

Alzheimer?s is perhaps the most well-known form of dementia. not only is there a gradual memory loss, there is also an inability to learn new skills or retain new information.

Therefore, a person with Alzheimer?s may be incapable of remembering that they have moved or that there have been changes to their life.

They tend to repeat themselves when speaking and may become confused and misplace objects that they use. as the disease progresses, they also tend to become restless and wander more.

Their personality may change and they can become irritable, anxious and depressed.

Vascular Dementia

There is a second form of dementia called vascular dementia. unlike Alzheimer?s disease, which is a gradual process, there may be a sudden loss of memory or mental function.

There may be other signs of mental impairment that can be quite similar to a stroke in many ways.

These can include a loss of motor skills, an inability to walk and paralysis.

Other physical symptoms can include a loss of bladder or bowel function.

If you think that someone in your life is suffering from either of these forms of dementia, it is very important that they get a proper medical diagnosis so that treatment can begin.
