Autism tends to go hand in hand with a variety of other mental and behavioral conditions in kids, suggests a new study that highlights the fuzzy nature of autism diagnoses themselves.

Researchers said that other disorders that often go along with autism – such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or learning disabilities – may complicate the diagnosis, or slow down any improvement in kids who do get diagnosed and treated early.

“The most important message that (the study) underscores is that these children tend to have multiple disabilities, not just autism,” said Johnny Matson, who studies autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge but wasn’t involved in the new research.

Dr. Andrew Zimmerman from Massachusetts General Hospital for Children in Lexington and his colleagues found that the conditions they typically saw occurring together with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis varied depending on the age of the child.

Learning disabilities were more common in the youngest kids with an autism spectrum disorder, while anxiety, speech problems and seizures were more often seen in elementary school kids and teens.

The study also found that one-third of kids who had ever been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder no longer had the diagnosis at the time their parents were surveyed.

The researchers note in their report, published in Pediatrics, that past studies have also found that some kids who originally have an autism spectrum disorder eventually lose that diagnosis and are no longer considered autistic.

Whether that’s due to a mistaken first diagnosis or actual changes in kids’ brains and behaviors is controversial.

Autism spectrum disorders include autism, Asperger’s syndrome and “pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified,” or PDD-NOS. the number of kids diagnosed with one of those conditions has spiked in recent years, with about one in every 110 kids in the United States now considered to have an autism spectrum disorder, according to estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

An upcoming revision of psychiatrists’ Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is expected to narrow the definition of autism and related disorders, potentially shrinking the number of children and adults who qualify for the diagnosis.

The new study included data from a phone survey of about 92,000 parents of kids age 17 and younger in the U.S. in 2007 and 2008.

Parents were asked if a doctor had ever told them their child had an autism spectrum disorder and if the child had one of the disorders currently, as well as if kids had a range of other mental and behavioral conditions such as anxiety and developmental delays.

In total, 1,366 of the parents surveyed said their kid had a past or current diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder. in 453 of those cases, kids had at one point been diagnosed as having one of the disorders but didn’t anymore, parents said.

Compared to kids who had lost their diagnosis, the youngest kids that were still considered autistic were more likely to have a learning disability or delayed development, while elementary school kids had more anxiety disorders and teens more often had a speech problem or mild seizures and epilepsy.

In her own studies, “the kids that had more co-occurring diagnoses tended to be diagnosed (with autism) later,” when an autism diagnosis may be more definitive and stable, said Dr. Susan Levy, an autism and child development researcher from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

In addition, she told Reuters Health, “The kids that had more co-occurring diagnoses had a lot more difficulties and their progress may have been impeded,” making it harder for their autism-related symptoms to improve with treatment.

Some of the kids who ended up not having an autism spectrum disorder may have originally been diagnosed incorrectly, especially if they got the diagnosis when they were very young, researchers said.

Kids and teens in the study that had once been considered autistic but weren’t any longer were more likely to have hearing problems than those who still had an autism spectrum disorder — suggesting that those problems might have been originally mistaken for autism.

But experts disagreed about whether it’s possible for kids who are diagnosed correctly with one of the autism-spectrum disorders to improve to the point where they are no longer affected.

“When you’re autistic, you’re autistic. It’s a very stable condition,” Matson said, noting that even when symptoms improve, people with autism have to keep getting treatment and work to maintain that progress.

Zimmerman argued that recognizing autism early and starting treatment can increase the likelihood for real, lasting improvement.

“It’s not unusual to see a child start out with more severe autism and then become more moderate and even mild as the years go by. a lot of the kids are improving, and we don’t really know why, except we know there’s a lot of moldability of the developing brain,” he told Reuters Health.

“We think that earlier treatment is essential and there are reasons to think that we can improve the kids. I’m very optimistic.”

A defense neuropsychologist diagnosed Marco Topete with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but said his results were “dead in the center” of average on other tests.

Burlingame-based neuropsychologist Nell Riley testified Tuesday in the case against the accused cop killer.

Topete, 39, is charged with murdering Yolo County Sheriff’s Deputy Tony Diaz on June 15, 2008. He could face the death penalty or life in prison if convicted. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Riley interviewed Topete for the first time in June 2009. She also interviewed him in December of that year.

“My diagnosis was that mr. Topete’s IQ was normal, memory and motor function was normal … but he did have a problem on a test set to test attention deficit disorder,” Riley said.

Riley had Topete take a computer-assisted ADHD test, which she said “was the only test where he had difficulty.”

Riley said symptoms of ADHD include not being able to pay attention but also being impulsive and not looking at the consequences of behavior.

The neuropsychologist also interviewed Topete’s family and looked at school records to see the suspect’s history with ADHD, which tends to start when people are young.

Under cross-examination from the prosecution, Riley said she also came to the conclusion Topete suffered “conduct disorder,” which is the adolescent equivalent of antisocial personality disorder.

“(Antisocial personality disorder) is a very controversial diagnosis,” Riley said.

She said the definition of antisocial personality disorder includes impulsiveness or failure to plan ahead, reckless disregard of the safety of others and lack of remorse. But Riley did not diagnose Topete with antisocial personality disorder.

Defense counsel Hayes Gable III said the defense hired Riley to conduct neuropsychology tests, not personality tests.

Further testimony from mental health experts will continue today, Wednesday and Thursday.

Gable said defense counsel would rest its case Thursday, anticipating rebuttals from the prosecution. Gable had initially said the defense’s case would take a month.

During opening statements Monday, Gable said Topete had suffered regular “night terrors” after he was released from prison on parole in March 2007.

On Tuesday, Dom Garcia, 18, testified his stepfather Topete would “wake up screaming” from nightmares.

Garcia’s mother, Angelique Topete, said during testimony Monday her husband would get little sleep as a result of the nightmares.

But Garcia also talked about the relationship he had with Marco Topete. He said they hung out “all the time” but Topete would watch his back more.

When asked about the day of the murder, Garcia began to cry and put a hand over his face. Judge Paul Richardson excused the jury for a few minutes so Garcia could gather himself.

Topete had asked Garcia to spend time with him that day, which happened to be Father’s Day. But Garcia decided to spend the day with his biological father in Merced.

“Marco was disappointed,” Garcia said.

On Father’s Day 2008, Topete went to a horse race with his cousin, Eduardo “Lalo” Velasco, who testified Tuesday to how much they were drinking that day.

THURSDAY, Feb. 3 (HealthDay News) — A special restrictive diet may significantly reduce symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in young children, a new study suggests.

When children between the ages of 4 and 8 were placed on a diet containing no processed foods for five weeks, ADHD symptoms diminished in 78 percent of them. and, when suspected trouble foods were reintroduced into the diet, two-thirds of the children experienced a relapse in symptoms.

“A strictly supervised restricted elimination diet is a valuable instrument to assess whether ADHD is induced by food,” wrote the study authors. “We think that dietary intervention should be considered in all children with ADHD, provided parents are willing to follow a diagnostic restricted elimination diet for a five-week period, and provided expert supervision is available,” they concluded.

Results of the study are published in the Feb. 5 issue of The Lancet.

Makes sense to me – feed your kids like humans and they may be human

Around 400 young people – including a pair of twins from Surrey – are taking part in a new study funded by children’s charity Action Medical Research, to try to find new ways to predict whether or not children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are likely to grow out of the condition.

The research being carried out at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, involves using a variety of tests with the youngsters – aged 15 – 25 – including EEG (electroencephalography) which measures brain activity using electrode sensors placed on the scalp.

They are also assessing the volunteers’ IQ and gathering detailed information about what sort of symptoms their ADHD is causing and how their lives are being affected. The research team is being led by Dr Jonna Kuntsi.

The team were awarded a research grant of £194,528 over three years, by Action Medical Research, with support from the Boshier-Hinton Foundation.

Around one in 20 children worldwide have ADHD.[1] Children with ADHD can have serious difficulties, with schoolwork and relationships, for example. Adults with ADHD can face additional problems – with drugs, crime and unemployment, to name but a few.

Around one third of children grow out of their disorder during adolescence, while others find their problems persist into adult life.[2] The researchers are trying to find out why, with the ultimate aim of improving care and treatment for people with ADHD.

The disorder usually starts in early childhood. Children with ADHD tend to be overactive and impulsive, with a short attention span. They may seem restless, are easily distracted and often fidget constantly. There is no cure for ADHD, though both medical and psychological treatments can help control symptoms.

Dr Kuntsi said: “We are investigating why some children with ADHD grow out of their disorder during adolescence while others do not. around 100 of the youngsters taking part in our study were diagnosed with ADHD during childhood, the others are their siblings, and pairs of siblings who do not have the disorder as this can also tell us if these markers of ADHD run in families.

“They all took part in a study seven years earlier, so we have detailed information on their development during childhood.

“We are studying how their brains are developing, and how they are functioning, looking for differences between children who recover from their ADHD as they get older and those whose disorder persists. we hope to identify new ways to predict whether or not children are likely to grow out of their ADHD,” she added. The researchers are leading experts in how risk factors for ADHD change the way the brain functions, and in studying how brain processes and behaviour develop and change in children with ADHD over time. They have successfully completed several large-scale studies on ADHD, including the precursor to this follow-up study which took place using the same children with ADHD 7 years ago. This makes the researchers ideally placed to carry out this new study. The research is taking place at the MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre at the prestigious Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. The centre houses a state-of-the-art EEG laboratory, which is a key resource for this project.

Alexandra Dedman, Senior Research Evaluation Manager for Action Medical Research, said: “The project aims to benefit the large numbers of children with ADHD who don’t grow out of their disorder. The number of adolescents treated for ADHD, and requiring transition to the care of adult mental health services, is increasing.[3]

“The researchers hope to find new ways to predict whether or not children with ADHD are likely to grow out of their disorder. They hope to learn more about why some children grow out of ADHD, while others do not.

“Ultimately, the researchers hope their work will guide the development of new treatments that will help provide long-term solutions for children with ADHD,” she added. NOTES TO EDITORS:

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common reasons children are referred for mental health services. it affects as many as one in every 20 children. Although boys are three to four times more likely than girls to experience ADHD, the disorder affects both genders.

There are three main types of ADHD. one type is characterized by inattentiveness, one type is characterized by hyperactive or impulsive behavior, and the third type is combined — when children exhibit signs of both types. Symptoms are often unnoticed until a child enters school.

Specialists have agreed that at least six symptoms from the following lists must be present for an accurate diagnosis, and symptoms must begin by age 7.

n Signs of inattentive behavior: has difficulty following instructions; has difficulty focusing on tasks; loses things at school and at home; forgets things often; becomes easily distracted or has difficulty listening; lacks attention to detail, makes careless mistakes or is disorganized; fails to complete homework or tasks.

n Signs of hyperactive behavior: is fidgety; leaves seat when should not; runs or climbs inappropriately; talks excessively; has difficulty playing quietly; is always on the go; blurts out answers; has trouble waiting turn; interrupts.

The presence of some symptoms, however, does not confirm a diagnosis of ADHD. just because a child has a lot of energy or difficulty paying attention in school does not mean the child has ADHD. An accurate diagnosis relies on the presence of a range of symptoms and difficulties that prevent the child from performing at an appropriate level for his or her age and intelligence level. Teachers often first observe these issues, and their input should be considered seriously.

Children and adolescents with ADHD are more likely than children without the disorder to suffer from other mental disorders. About half of all young people with ADHD have oppositional defiant disorder; about a quarter have an anxiety disorder; as many as one-third have depression; and one-fifth have bipolar disorder. Adolescents with untreated ADHD are at higher risk for substance abuse disorders.

Children with symptoms of ADHD should be referred to and evaluated by a mental health professional who specializes in treating children, unless your primary care doctor has experience in treating this disorder. The diagnostic evaluation should include behavioral observation in the classroom and at home. a comprehensive treatment plan should be developed with the family, and, whenever possible, the child should be involved in making treatment decisions. Educational testing should be performed when learning disabilities are present.

Magnesium deficiency may result in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder symptoms. The reasons for this involve understanding what Magnesium is and how it works in our bodies.Magnesium is a mineral. it is the 4th most abundant element in your body. Studies have shown that Deficiencies in magnesium can bring about a host of problems and symptoms are among the symptoms that have been linked to nutritional Inadequacies of this mineral. The majority of teens in this country have, according to ADHD studies performed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Unites State Department of Agriculture, significant magnesium Deficiencies.Magnesium is necessary for hundreds of chemical reactions in the body. our muscle and nerve function depends on magnesium as do our skeletal system and our immune system. Magnesium is needed to maintain normal blood sugar levels and a normal blood pressure. Perhaps the most important role that magnesium plays is in protein synthesis and energy metabolism.Magnesium works with calcium to power the cells in our body but according to the 2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and published in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, what we Eat in America, 2006-2007 Report, most of our kids have magnesium Deficiencies. many younger children and adults do as well but the statistics are most alarming for teens. Eighty-nine percent of boys and seventy percent of girls aged 14-18 have inadequate nutritional intake of Magnesium.Scientific studies have found that magnesium can be used to improve a host of conditions including anxiety and depression. there is some scientific evidence that magnesium may be able to regulate neurotransmitter function. Deficiencies in magnesium, which can bring on by excess perspiration or by decreased nutritional intake will worsen these conditions.these Inadequacies may bring on faulty neurotransmission as well as anxiety, depression, migraine headaches, mood disorders, hyperactivity and decreased concentration. Low magnesium has also been linked to sudden cardiac death, mitral valve prolapsed, diabetes and hypertension.several Studies have shown that supplementation with 80 mg to 200 mg of magnesium daily improves anxiety, depression and ADD and ADHD symptoms. Most multivitamins have between 20mg to 50 mg of magnesium. this may be plenty of supplementation if you, or your children, are eating foods that are rich in magnesium such as green leafy vegetables, lot of whole grains, walnuts, cashews, and peanuts, beans, fish, pumpkin, bananas, avocados, raisins, milk products and tomato paste but is likely not enough if you are not and if this is the case then supplementation is required.Magnesium is an essential nutritional element that may be deficient in the diet of most Americans. Teen age children in particular, are likely to have magnesium Inadequacies. Magnesium is lost through respiration and sweating and active people are more at risk for having borderline low magnesium levels than people who are sedentary. Eating foods high in magnesium or supplementing your diet with a magnesium vitamin is essential to avoid the poor health outcomes that result from low magnesium levels.Check your multivitamin to insure that you and your children are getting enough magnesium. Those of us, who like hot chocolate and coffee, have yet another reason to drink more of these beverages. it turns out that cocoa and caffeine both contain a fair amount of magnesium. some of the mood lifting effects of chocolate and coffee could be attributed to these magnesium levels. The Attention Deficit Disordercommunity has been quick to recommend fatty acid supplementation to improve the behavioral symptoms that bring on problems in people with ADD and ADHD. The research community is only now learning that nutritional substances such as calcium, magnesium and zinc also play a role in moderating our mood and our behavior. By supplementing our diets with magnesium we may avoid worsening the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and may, in the process not only improve our overall health but also diminish the incidence of developing conditions such as depression and anxiety that often accompany a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 11, 2011) — Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder are two to three times more likely than children without the disorder to develop serious substance abuse problems in adolescence and adulthood, according to a study by UCLA psychologists and colleagues at the University of South Carolina.

"This greater risk for children with ADHD applies to boys and girls, it applies across race and ethnicity — the findings were very consistent," said Steve S. Lee, a UCLA assistant professor of psychology and lead author of the study. "The greater risk for developing significant substance problems in adolescence and adulthood applies across substances, including nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and other drugs."

Lee and his colleagues analyzed 27 long-term studies that followed approximately 4,100 children with ADHD and 6,800 children without the disorder into adolescence and young adulthood — in some cases for more than 10 years. These carefully designed, rigorous and lengthy studies, Lee said, are the "gold standard" in the field.

The research by Lee and his colleagues, the first large-scale comprehensive analysis on this issue, is published online this week in the journal Clinical Psychology Review and will appear in a print edition later this year.

The researchers combined all the published studies that met rigorous criteria and analyzed them together. They found that children with ADHD were at greater risk for serious problems such as addiction, abuse and trying to quit but being unable to, Lee said.

"any single study can be spurious," he said, "but our review of more than two dozen carefully designed studies provides a compelling analysis."

ADHD is common, occurring in approximately 5 percent to 10 percent of children in the U.S., and figures in many other industrialized countries with compulsory education are comparable, according to Lee.

Symptoms of the disorder are common in children and include being easily distracted, fidgeting, being unable to complete a single task and being easily bored. however, to receive a diagnosis of ADHD, a child must have at least six of nine symptoms of either hyperactivity or inattention, and the child’s behavior must be causing problems in his or her life. The vast majority of children with ADHD have at least six symptoms in both categories, Lee said.

In addition, the symptoms must have started before age seven, must be present in multiple settings — at home and school, for example — and must be adversely affecting functioning. They must not be explainable by any medical condition or any other mental disorder.

As children with ADHD enter adolescence and adulthood, they typically fall into three groups of roughly equal size, Lee said: one-third will have significant problems in school and socially; one-third will have moderate impairment; and one-third will do reasonably well or have only mild impairment.

Parents should monitor their children, said Lee, who noted that early intervention with a mental health professional is often helpful. A diagnosis of ADHD must be made by a mental health professional such as a child psychologist or psychiatrist and not by a parent or teacher.

Co-authors on the study are Kathryn Humphreys, a UCLA graduate student in clinical psychology; Kate Flory, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of South Carolina; Rebecca Liu, a UCLA undergraduate who worked in Lee’s laboratory; and Kerrie Glass, a graduate student in psychology at the University of South Carolina.

Chalk up another point for video gaming’s health benefits. This time, a new study suggests that kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have shown symptom relief after engaging in a five-week working memory-training program revolving around “game-like” software.

The study, published in The Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology, demonstrates that students who participated in the experiment were shown to have improved working memory, or the ability to retain information long enough to complete a task (such as remembering a phone number long enough to dial it).

“Working memory is critical in everyday life, and certainly for academic success, but it is one of the things that is very difficult for children with ADHD,” says Christine Hanson, a graduate student in Psychology at Ohio State University, who worked on the study.

The game itself was developed by Swedish Company Cogmed in partnership with Karolinska Institute, a medical university in Stockholm. according to the study, students — from a specialized Columbus school for children with disabilities ranging in ages 7 to 17 — who played the game for 30-40 minutes a day were rated to show improved ADHD symptoms such as reduced inattention and a better working memory.

The game itself isn’t exactly Mass Effect 2; rather, a robot may say a set of numbers and the students are expected to type them back in the correct order. (Fun!)

“At first the kids love it, because it is like a game,” says graduate student Synthia Puffenberger, who also worked on the study. “But the software has an algorithm built in that makes the exercises harder as the students get better. So the children are always challenged.”
