You are probably less contagious after a few years with no additional abnormal cell detected…the same would hold true of genital warts you would probably be less contagious after a year or so. You can’t guarantee that a new sex partner will not share your HPV infection. HPV can lie is a silent state for years after the initial infection.

I personally feel that being up front and honest is important in any relationship…the discovery that a person withheld the knowledge that they had/have HPV could cause serious consequences in a relationship that I had with the person…trust is the base of all good relationships…lies and deceptions are just not good with me…I am very open about my past HPV infection.

Yes you should share the information of any past abnormal pap smear or external genital warts with any new sex partner. The American Social Heath Association can help you with ways to tell a new sex partner.

Today is World Tuberculosis Day. every year on March 24th, the Stop Tuberculosis Partnership (STP) has chosen this date to create awareness about tuberculosis (TB). Historically, this date was also the birthday of when Dr. Robert Koch discovered the bacteria, tuberculosis bacillus as the cause of this deadly disease in 1882.

With more than 100 years since the discovery of TB, it still remains an epidemic in much of the world today. Tuberculosis is the world’s seventh-leading cause of death. 1.8 million people died from tuberculosis last year, and it is estimated that three people died from TB every minute. it is one of three most deadly diseases that affect the underprivileged, with the other two being AIDS and malaria.

This year’s theme is “On the move against Tuberculosis” with the goal of eliminating tuberculosis by 2015. besides leveraging on more resources at all levels to accelerate the fight against tuberculosis, STP aims to promote this day as a day of inspiration for both individuals and companies to participate in their action plan.

to achieve their goal, they are seeking the public to help them:

• Find new and Better Tools to Fight Tuberculosis

  More resources must be allocated to turn scientific discoveries into new and better drugs, diagnostics and vaccines. it is also essential to increase the availability, accessibility and efficiency of tuberculosis services to the masses. according to the report, there were calls for commitment of US$ 1.1 billion for tuberculosis research in 2010, but there was a US$ 0.6 billion funding shortfall. With nearly two million people dying from tuberculosis annually, such research cannot be relegated to the backseat.

• Forge new and Stronger Partnerships to Reach the Global Targets

  With only 5 years to go before the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to combat tuberculosis, it is important that innovative approaches are put in place in the most efficient manner. all stakeholders, such as drug manufacturers, donors, public health officials need to collaborate and accelerate in making these new medical breakthroughs a standard of care as quickly as possible in order to meet the MDG target to stop TB.

We are optimistic that the MDG goal of stopping tuberculosis can be realized by 2015, as long as individuals take the initiative to seek treatment upon suffering symptoms, and researchers continue to source for better treatments for patients worldwide.

Tuberculosis is a contagious respiratory disease. it is akin to the common cold as it spreads through the air when infectious people cough, sneeze, talk or spit. a person needs only to inhale a small amount of airborne germs to be infected. You don’t get TB through physical contact, such as touching the clothes or shaking the hands of someone who is infected. Instead, TB is spread primarily from person to person by breathing infected air during close contact.

Tuberculosis is generally classified as being either latent or active. Latent TB occurs when the bacteria are present in the body, but they are inactive. Hence, latent TB is not contagious. Infected people may not feel ill or show any symptoms if their immune system can keep the bacteria under control. their chest X-ray even looks normal, so the only way to diagnose is through skin test or tuberculosis blood test.

Fortunately, latent TB is curable and can significantly reduce the likelihood of developing active TB. Treatment with isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide for first two months, followed by isoniazid and rifampicin for four months has known to be successful.

In fact, being infected by latent TB is not uncommon. according to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 2 billion people in the world are currently infected with it. however, only about 5% – 10% will become sick with active TB at some time in their lives, usually within two years of the infection. People living with HIV are at a much higher risk. The vast majority of TB deaths are in the developing world, with majority of them happened in Asia as a third of new cases come from India and China.

Tuberculosis primarily affects the lungs, but it can also affect organs in the central nervous system, lymphatic system and circulatory system. When a person becomes infected with tuberculosis, the bacteria in the lungs would multiply and usually cause a local lung infection called pneumonia.

Common symptoms of pulmonary TB are

• a cough that lasts for more than two weeks
• blood stains when coughing
• feeling weak or fatigue
• fever
• loss of appetite
• pain in the chest
• sweating at night
• unexplained weight loss

if you have these symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately. an early stage of TB is curable. go to a local communicable disease centre (CDC) for tuberculosis testing now!

You can play a part to help prevent the spread of tuberculosis by:

• covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze
• not spitting on the ground
• seeking treatment if you suspect you have tuberculosis symptoms
• ventilating your houses, offices or other enclosed areas by allowing the movement of fresh air
• washing your hands frequently especially when you have been around people suffering from chronic coughs
• wearing a mask when you go to crowded public areas

Given the widespread of latent TB around the world, it is important to keep yourself fit and healthy knowing that the onset of active TB only triggers when your immune system is weak. You can keep yourself in the top condition by having a balanced diet daily, exercising regularly and abstaining from alcohol, drugs and smoking. Well, what can I say to express the relief I feel at finding this site?? if I said right now I’m brought to tears by the discovery, it wouldn’t be a lie.you see, this last year with the disease has been the worst of what I call “my UC life”, & I was beginning to think that I really was going to have to deal with it all by myself. As daft as it sounds, I had no idea that sites such as this even existed.Thankyou thankyou thankyou Adam! And to all those who post their stories. you have no idea how it’s made me feel

So, my story.well, back in 2004/5, I was working at retail management level for a internationally known fashion accessories retailer, & under A LOT of stress. I had started to notice a definite lack of energy, appetite & general feelings of being unwell, but put it down to work stress.until, one day, I was finally unable to eat more than a bite, the food I WAS able to eat tasted like ash in my mouth, my concentration & co-ordination was deteriorating & most of all, I just wanted to sleeeeeeeeep ALL THE TIME. I woke up at 2am that night throwing my guts up until there was nothing left in me, but still retching, & nauseous as hell. I was rushed to A&E.I spent the next week in hospital while many tests were undertaken, & was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. I had never heard of it before in my life. I wasn’t scared, just confused. what the hell was it?I was sent home with Prednisolone & Pentasa, & was off work for 3 months. I suffered with panic attacks & extreme fatigue. I couldn’t go anywhere alone. that was when I got scared. thanks to the steroids, I looked about 6 months pregnant & I had people coming up to me asking when the baby was due. I could’ve died of embarrassment – I didn’t know what to say, I was so ashamed of my illness, so I just went along with them, saying “not long now!”. A real low point. However, after a few weeks, I started to pick up. my energy came back, & slowly did my lust for life. Miraculously, I went into remission. for 2 years! I was lucky.Then, a re-lapse. I went back to my consultant gastroenerologist, who re-started me on Mesalazine. it seemed to work so well, that, after a couple of months, I was told I didn’t need to return to him. So I didn’t.and didn’t, and didn’t – even though my relief turned out to be short lived & I continued to have up to 6 small flares in a 12 month period. I just thought I had to keep taking my Mesalazine & just, well, deal with it. and so this was how I ‘managed’ my UC for 18 months or more. each flare got worse than the last, more frequency of ‘going’, more quantity of blood, until I realised that the disease had taken over my life. I was no longer working full-time permanently, & had been unable to for some time, & was living in fear of my own body. something had to be done.back I went to the consultant.Mesalazine again, but this time, an upped dosage. No other meds were discussed. No follow up appointment made.and therefore, no real change. I was put on a low-fibre diet which had some effects, but I gained 10 lbs in the process & constantly felt slow & sluggish. Yet I have carried on like this ever since. I have moved away from my old area where all this took place, & now live in North Nottinghamshire (Robin Hood country!) & have a new consultant, but the meds & treatment I have recieved have been the same! is this right?????it came to a head in October last year when I had the worst flare of all. Very late one night, after a week of bad symptoms, I had started to ‘go’ every 10 minutes. Yep, you didn’t mis-read – 10 MINUTES. Then the ‘going’ started to have an added complication – vomiting. Then came the cramps. my God, the pain. Excruciating. I knew something was seriously wrong, so at 7am I was again taken to A&E.and in hospital I stayed for more than a week while I was drip fed steroids to get the inflammation under control, & given Movicol to remove a blockage.upon being discharged, I was prescribed a 3 month course of Prednisolone & yet more Mesalazine. the Pred did it’s job, & I started to believe I could live a bit more ‘normally’. the side effects were horrendous though, & I didn’t ever remember it being like that before. the weight gain was the same, but the moon face, body aches & pains, & depression certainly wasn’t.I couldn’t bring myself to look in the mirror as the steroids had changed my face so much, I didn’t look like me. I didn’t feel pretty, or feminine in any way & it made me feel so low. my boyfriend has always had a problem dealing with my illness & how it affected me, so this was affecting our relationship pretty badly at this point, too. So understandably, I couldn’t wait to be off the meds. I thought I would have some off the same good luck I had when I was first diagnosed, & I would finally have my life, & myself, back.how wrong I was! the steroid course finished in January this year, & within a week of ending the course, the symptoms were back. I had suffered a viral throat infection over New Year, & put it down to that. But, after 2 weeks with no change, I thought “I’m NOT going through this again!” & took myself to A&E. I was kept in for 2 days, one of which was my 32nd birthday. not the best I’ve ever had!Tests showed that my inflammation was borderline, but constipation was causing my symptoms. I couldn’t believe it!!! I was ‘going’ all the time – how could I be constipated???So, I was sent home with Movicol & a shorter course of gastro-resistant Pred, and the ever present Mesalazine.and here we are. that brings us to right now. and how am I?F*@~^ing ill, is the answer. and VERY p@**ed off. I mean, can these docs ever get anything right???? the steroids were on a gradual lowered dose, so upon reaching 20mg of Pred a day, I started to bleed. HEAVILY. I mean, I can’t even see the bottom of the pan as the water is deep red. and this is every time I ‘go’. I’m currently visiting the ‘old porcelain friend’ up to 20 times in 24 hours. I’ve been off work for a week, & am finding it hard to do the basic household tasks.I’ve been feeling so ill & so alone, I’m sure some of you will understand that feeling. I have a consultant appointment in 6 days, but I have no hope.

A mutated gene has been found in a third of patients with the most common form of kidney cancer.

The researchers said the discovery of a second major gene linked to renal cancer was a major advance.

The study, published in the journal Nature, shows the gene is involved in packaging DNA in the body's cells.

The Institute of Cancer Research said the study provided a better picture of how the cancer formed and paved the way for future therapies.

Kidney cancer is incredibly good at evading detection; in around half of cases the sufferer has no symptoms.

In 2008, nearly 4,000 people in the UK died from the illness.

Completing the picture

Scientists have been gradually unravelling the genetic nature of kidney cancer for years.

The main gene involved, the tumour suppressor VHL, is mutated in eight out of 10 patients, but is not the whole picture.

Researchers at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute have discovered several other genes which play a part, but have now discovered a gene, PBRM1, which is mutated in around a third of cases.

Professor Mike Stratton, director of the Sanger Institute, said: "Our discovery is a major advance.

"We think we may have an almost complete understanding of the set of abnormal genes which drive this cancer.

"this insight will provide us with many new therapeutic directions."

Kidney cancer is the seventh most common cancer in men and the ninth in women.

Dr Elizabeth Rapley, Institute of Cancer Research, said: "this cancer has a poor prognosis with fewer than 50% of patients surviving their disease for more than five years.

"the research provides a better and more complete picture of the genetic changes needed for renal cancer to develop.

"It highlights the importance of genes that wind and unwind DNA in renal cancer and paves the way for the development of personalised cancer therapies that exploit these mutations."
