In a recent workshop for RTLBs I discussed all of the different diagnoses which are given to children today with learning or behaviours difficulties.

We now have ADHD, ADD, GDD, PDD, ODD and PDAD together with dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and Aspergers. The list seems to be endless and no doubt there will be more added as time goes by. However it has been my experience that these are just descriptions of symptoms. it is only in recent years that any real understanding of underlying causes has emerged. 

Development disruption

These ‘alphabet kids’ are all struggling with a neuro developmental delay which began in the first four months of life. Dr Robin Puac, a functional neurologist, has found that at four months of age there is a sudden change in brain development, with the sudden growth of spindle cells, heralding the unfolding of the frontal cortex. The alphabet kids almost all show a disruption at this crucial stage of development.

Audrey McAllen, who developed “The Extra Lesson” intervention programme for these children, also noted that the underlying faculties required for learning (spatial orientation and body geography) also begin to develop in this crucial period of life.

Sally Goddard, in “Reflexes Learning and Behaviour” found that the primitive reflexes babies are born with (to ensure survival after birth) should all be suppressed by the baby’s own movement on the floor in these crucial first four months. When these remain they interfere with the processes of thought and memory. A direct cause and effect relationship can be seen between specific symptoms and specific retained reflexes.

Learning struggles

So what has happened to our beautiful children? they are all struggling with their learning equipment. they are asking the question “how do I get into my body and make it work well for me?”

The average age when a woman goes into menopause is 51, even though medical professionals have long recognized that some women have early menopause symptoms as early as 10 to 15 years before menstruation stops completely.

Each woman is different, as are the fluctuating hormones that signal the start of early menopause symptoms. If a woman does not menstruate for 12 consecutive months prior to age 40 it’s considered premature menopause. Sometimes it can even hit as early the 30′s or even in the 20′s. “Many people have symptoms they attribute to other reasons,” said Dr. William Madland with Saint Alphonsus Medical Group. “But when you evaluate them and get detailed histories and hormone studies you can determine that many of their symptoms are caused by the process of menopause.”

There is no consensus on what is causing women to have early menopause symptoms at much younger ages. some believe it’s the result of diets that are made up of processed foods high in refined carbs and low in protein. Others blame chronic exposure to environmental toxins and the heavy use of artificial hormones. some studies place the blame on over production of estrogen from emotional and physical stress due to fast paced and hectic lifestyles. whatever the cause, most women experiencing early menopause symptoms prior to age 40 don’t want to believe they are going through the change of life. While there is nothing a woman can do to halt menopause once it begins, knowing when it is going to happen can relieve some of the fears and help women develop a plan for menopause treatment. to help, doctors can perform tests that measure different hormone levels, like FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and estrogen. And now there is a new blood test available that can determine if a woman has the four genes linked to early menopause. Knowledge about what is going on is a powerful tool for understanding early menopause symptoms and helping women feel in control of their bodies.

Parkinsons Medicine, How we use It to Treat Parkinsons Disease

To date, there is no known cure for Parkinson’s, despite the ongoing research efforts of scientists across the world. having said that, there are a number of treatments available which can substantially relieve the pain many patients feel as a result of the symptoms of the disease. It is not the case that every patient will require medication and drugs to treat their condition, and these will only be administered where the severity of the symptoms has a strong adverse affect on the patient’s lifestyle. the course of Parkinsons Medicine offered to a patient will vary with the amount of disruption the symptoms cause, the state of the patient’s condition and the severity of the condition within the patient. even in these cases, it is not always a guarantee that the symptoms will be helped, although these treatments will go someway to making life more comfortable.

The most effective treatment for the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease by a long shot is the drug levodopa. This is derived from a naturally produced chemical in plant matter and animals, and works with the nerve cells to produce the dopamine which has been eroded by the patient’s condition, and is thought to be an underlying cause of the disease. the drug allows the majority of patients to extend the period of time in which they can lead their normal lives, effectively stalling the development of their Parkinson’s. Unfortunately, this treatment is only really effective in helping rigidity and bradykinesia, and may be of no help to the tremor or balance problems the patient may be experiencing. the drug is so effective, many patients forgot they are suffering from the disease as they continue to lead their lives as normal. however, levodopa is only a short term solution, as it can never replace the nerve cells which have been irretrievably damaged within the brain.

As with most medications, there are a number of side effects with levodopa, including restlessness, low blood pressure and vomiting. in some cases patients may also occasionally feel confused as to their surroundings , although this is a rare occurrence. It is important for physicians and patients to work together to come up with a happy medium between the benefits and side effects when using levodopa.

When combined with the drug tolcapone, Parkinsons medicine significantly reduces the effects of the disease, and helps block the destruction of dopamine which worsens the condition. having said that, this tends to increase involuntary movement and twitching over a long course of treatment, and is sometimes withdrawn for several days at a time to ensure its continued effectiveness. however, patients should never completely cease treatment with levodopa without their physician’s guidance, due to the extreme and serious side effects that can emerge as a result.

Although there is no cure for the disease, Parkinsons medicine can go a long way to suppressing the debilitating and disabling symptoms of the condition, and making life more bearable for the many thousands of sufferers around the world.
