I've got a chronic pain in my prostate region. sometimes the specific area of pain moves to different areas, such as down into my thigh, but the pain is always on the right side. I occasionally have a discomfort in the tip of my penis, like a chafing feeling. It's not sore to the touch, and goes away after several days. Blood tests are clear, it's not STD. My first doc(GP) thought it might be epididimitis, and I've been on Cipro, Zithromax, and Doxycycline, but nothing fixes it. I had a testicular ultrasound which was clear. The urologist diagnosed porstatitis and prescribed Avodart, which I've been on for over a month now, while continuing Doxycycline. The pain comes and goes, but never goes away completely. Muscle relaxers and ibuprofen provide little to no relief. The question is, are these symptoms common for CPPS or Prostatitis? What other medications or treatments can I try? could it be something else? Any suggestions (other than go see another doc) would be greatly appreciated!!

Does anyone out there with chronic prostatitis ever experience a discomfort or prickly feeling inside the penis? I will occasionally experience a "prickly" feeling inside the penis, closer to the tip than the base, There's no additional discomfort during urination, but it's mild to fairly uncomfortable at different times. The tip of the penis is also sometimes very sensitive, but I gather this is more common. these symptoms seem to go away when I'm taking antibiotics (doxycycline, cipro, or zithromax), but they usually come back after a while. I know it's not STD related or anything, but it's an unusual phenomenon. Maybe a urinary tract problem related to the prostatitis, or maybe something like a small kidney stone?? Anybody?

If you have a sex partner, have your Doc medicate both of you. Some infections will go to your wife and then back to you. Its not V.D.

I've had serious pain in my prostate area for almost three months now. sometimes it's pretty centralized in my groin area, and other times it feels like it has moved down into my inner thigh area. This started not too long after I had a pretty serious urinary tract infection. Other than the "prostate" pain, I also have "hot flashes" in my pubic region. Feels like I'm sweating, but there's no moisture. Also, there is sometimes a prickly feeling in or around my urethra! There is no discharge that I can tell. good grief!!!

I went to my physician. My prostate is enlarged (3 on a 10 scale). he said it sounded like a prostate infection, and prescribed antibiotics. I've taken three weeks worth of doxycycline and two weeks of cipro. It hasn't made much if any difference.

The "prostate" pain is much worse if I do a lot of sitting. if I'm up moving around a lot or lying down, the pain lessens after a while (like by the next day).

My partner (f) got an STD screen and was negative. Now what?

I took Cipro for 10 days, Septra for 10 days, now doxycycline for 10 days. each time, things cleared up greatly for a few days, then symptoms returned. I know that sometimes you have to take anti-biotics for 4-12 weeks to get better. does that mean that my symptoms won't improve for a few weeks and I shouldn't be concerned yet? I'm terrified that I have one of those cases of prostatitis that never goes away. I know this happens sometimes but just don't know if I'm overreacting because it's taking some time to get better. I'm miserable! Pain, no sexual function…I'm basically incapacitated. Has anyone had prostatitis that took a long time to clear up? Please help!! I'm only 32!!

I hear your frustration but on the other end. my husband has had chronic prostatitis for a year now too. we are trying to start a family too. he has seen numerous urologists all whom have given him various antibiotics. usually around the 4th round, symptoms like you described come back in full force. he even went the natural route for awhile – off antibiotics, took lots of omega-3's, no sugar or dairy, lots of protein in diet, and took probiotics to build his immune system. his pain decreased dramatically although never fully went away. after 4 months of doing this, symtoms have come back with a new one – pain radiating from his testicle down his leg. he saw an infectious disease doctor about a month ago who put him on a strong antibiotic (750 mg of levaquin). he just started taking it. i have studied the stanford protocol too but not many doctors are familiar with it. CP is a disease that can take over your life. i wish i had some advice for you but like you we are seeking answers too. the good thing is that your wife can get pregnant while you have CP. i did several months ago when my husband was at the worst with this infection. unfortunately i miscarried but it was totally unrelated to the CP.

I was diagnosed with Lyme in July and after 21 days of doxycycline I felt better but continue to have some days where I am tired and feel like I want to take a nap. overall,I am not debilitated by any means but I just don't feel the same as I did before being diagnosed. Yesterday I received a Tetanus shot and today I feel a little icky…..kinda tired…no fever or full blown Lyme symptoms but I am wondering if the shot may not have been such a good idea???

I was diagnosed with lyme disease in '93. could I still be having some symptoms now? I know when I went to the doctor after a camping trip, I had the tell-tale bullseye rash. they said it was lyme disease and I think all that they gave me was tetracyclene. Coluld that cure lyme disease?

Lyme disease is a tick-transmitted infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. Symptoms include an erythema migrans rash, which may be followed weeks to months later by neurologic, cardiac, or joint abnormalities. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, but acute and convalescent antibody titers may be helpful. Treatment is with antibiotics such as doxycycline or, for serious infections, ceftriaxone.

Although uncommon, it is possible to develop a relapsing type of malaria months to even years after traveling to a malaria infected country, even if you were taking the appropriate malaria medications to prevent the illness. Any returning traveler who develops a fever that lasts more than a few days requires prompt medical attention to screen for a malaria infection.

While malaria medications such as chloroquine, doxycycline, or mefloquine (Lariam) can prevent symptoms of acute malaria from developing by suppressing the infection in the bloodstream, they do not prevent relapses of infection caused by certain strains of the parasite that have a persistent liver phase. Fortunately, the most common type of malaria is the P.falciparum strain that has no relapsing phase, so malaria medications will prevent any symptoms of this infection.

However, it is necessary to continue such medications for four weeks after a possible exposure to ensure that the infection has run its course before the medication can be safely stopped. Other strains of malaria such as P. vivax, ovale, or malariae can infect the liver and persist in a dormant state for months, or even up to several years, after exposure. Because of this risk of relapse, travelers to malarious areas are not allowed to donate blood for up to three years after returning.

In the unfortunate event that you do develop a relapsing case of malaria, it can be easily treated by suppressing the acute symptoms with chloroquine and then erraticating the liver infection with a medication called primaquine. this medication is more toxic and has more adverse effects than chloroquine, especially in individuals with an inherited deficiency in the blood enzyme G6PD that can be easily screened for with a simple blood test prior to treatment.

The best way to prevent relapsing malaria is to prevent getting infected in the first place. this is why it is very important to avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellents and mosquito netting in addition to taking malaria medications. If you do develop a fever and flu-like symptoms after returning from a malarious region, you need to be aware of the possibility of a malaria infection and should see a physician as soon as possible for further evaluation.

COLUMBIA – A high fever, chills, sore throat, sweats. Those sound like symptoms of the flu, right? one researcher at the University of Missouri wants you to think twice about whether or not you’re actually suffering from the flu this winter season.  Guoquan Zhang, an assistant professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, is working on a vaccine for Q fever.   while there’s never been a documented outbreak in the United States, the recent rash of the disease in the Netherlands has prompted the CDC to issue travel advisory to Americans planning on visiting the country. Infection can only be confirmed by a blood test, and doctors use the anti-biotic doxycycline to treat the disease effectively–though without treatment, the infection usually takes several months to run its course. It’s fatal in only about 1 to 2 percent of cases.   of particular concern to Missouri is the ability of Q fever to take hold in livestock, and then tranfer to humans. the Netherlands ordered a slaughter of 35,000 milk goats during the epidemic in 2009.   unlike the flu, there’s no vaccine available in the United States approved by the FDA. the vaccine available around the world causes a severe reaction if the Q fever pathogen is already present.   Zhang’s research focuses on creating a vaccine that doesn’t cause a skin reaction.
