I am a 22 year old male current non smoker. I used to smoke 2 packs a day between the ages of 15 and 17. once a month or so, I go through periods of about 1 week of heavy marijuana smoking using aluminum and other household items. For the past 2 years I've had severe sore throat on a daily basis, and just recently have been noticing increased shortness of breathe during physical activity and an increase in severe headaches along with several other minor health changes. I feel a "heaviness" in my right lung that is new. I also dry cough almost every day. (One or two coughs only) I have been to several ENT's and they've all told me that my sore throat and cough is a result of acid reflux. I do remember having taken an x ray of my chest one year ago (ENT ordered it) and it came out negative for cancer. out of all the lung cancer symptoms I've read about the only one that I do not seem to have is coughing up blood. All of the other symptoms I seem to have with the first being my shortness of breathe and my chronic sore throat. I am wondering if my history of heavy cigarette smoking along with my current heavy marijuana smoking and all of my weird lung symptoms could be enough reason to go to the ER first thing in the morning? thanks.

You have been to SEVERAL ENT's? That is highly unusual. Most people never see an ENT in their whole life. Is there another part to this story? I can't imagine several(three?) ENT's blowing off your symptoms for GERD. Maybe see a pulmonologist this time and get to the bottom of the symptoms for sure.

The first question about cancer should be what are the common symptoms in all kinds of cancers.

So far as my knowledge goes – All types of cancer are found in people with low stomach acids. In cancer patients the glucose in cells does not burn in the presence of oxygen to produce 38 units of energy. In cancer patients the glucose ferments to produce 2 units of energy.

There are no other common symptom in all various types of cancers.

It has been found that in most of the cancer patients there is accumulation of acids just under the skin of cancer patients. but lot of people have been found to be very less acidic or highly alkaline.

All the disease have something to do with stomach. Now let us start with stomach and down till excretion.

Whatever we eat goes in the stomach. There is Hcl acid in the stomach and lot of other enzymes are added to the food and chyme (paste) in stomach or while going down in the small intestines or elsewhere.

The food remains in the stomach for 4.30 to 5.00 hours. The food starts moving into small intestine after 20 to 30 minutes after eating. The stomach vibrates at the rate of 3-4 vibrations per minutes in order to mix the acids and enzymes and make a fine paste of food so that the same can be pushed in the small intestines.

During this process of mixing of acids, enzymes and food lot of acidic gases are produced. since these gases are light in weight it creates a pressure and pushes the food in the small intestines.

Now if one drinks water or other liquids with the meals and goes to bed shortly afterwards. so solids and liquids in the stomach the person will feel discomfort and will tend to sleep towards left side. That will cause the acidic gases and acidic liquids to escape from the stomach. That will reach to blood. High acids in the blood will cause the gap in the tissues to increase to allow the acids to be stored outside the blood system. during the course of sports these acids are reabsorbed in the blood system. but usually sportsman are found to be drinking huge amounts of water shortly after sports and hence become suspectible to cancer.

I have done small experiments in respect of last statements. If a person drinks water with meals and goes to bed immediatelt thereafter and gets up after 1 or 2 hours he will feel very thirsty. but if a person drinks water early say at 7 pm and eats dinner at 8 pm and goes to bed after 10 without drinking water or other liquids he will not feel thirsty after 1 or 2 hours of going to bed.

Now when one starts drinking water before meals the entire process which causes cancer starts getting reversed. Within 7 to 10 days he has water trapped in the body which needs to be released. but since the fluid levels in blood system are sufficient this can not come back. That excess of water and acids outside the blood system is the reason for none burning of the glucose in the presence of oxygen.

So after about 10 days the cancer patient should be given water fast for 24 hours. this water fast should be repeated every 7 days till the reports of the cancer patient becomes all right.

During water fast the cancer patient should not be given any water or any other liquids. but the person should take normall meals. Sudden exposer to dehydrating environment should also be avoided. The should reason in bed or indoors so that dehydration does not take place at a fast pace. Slow dehydration is the key to cure cancer.

One should expect recovery from cancer in 2 to 3 months. though there could be complete recovery from cancer but the above system should be followed and person monitored for at least 1 year.

Do you have GPs where you are. (Doctors based in your community- first line for non emergency cases- such as yourself). If you do it would be more appropriate to see them first.

On a different but extremely important note. your smoking of an illegal (again depends on where you live) substance.

A CAIRNS woman who claims she was left deaf and blind after failing to be diagnosed with a potentially fatal fungal disease is suing her doctor and Queensland Health for $7.8 million.

Nancy Leanne Mules, 46, has lodged documents in the Cairns Supreme Court against Dr Kaylene Joy Ferguson and Cairns Base Hospital over claims there was a delay in diagnosing and treating her for cryptococcal meningitis.

Symptoms of the disease include fever, fatigue, chest pain, dry cough, headaches, blurred vision, confusion and swelling of the abdomen.

The former Queenslander Hotel operations manager is now permanently blind, profoundly deaf in both ears and requires 24-hour care.

The documents claim that in June 2008, Ms Mules went to see Dr Ferguson, a Cairns-based general practitioner, after experiencing rushes of blood to her head and dizziness.

Ms Mules, represented by Shine Lawyers, claims she was told by her doctor she could be starting menopause and should have a mammogram.

Three months later, she returned to see Dr Ferguson complaining of increased neck pain, bad headaches and "rushes" up to 12 times a day.

The documents claim the doctor failed to perform a clinical examination of Ms Mules and ordered her to continue taking pain relievers Panadol and Mersyndol and receive chiropractic treatment.

The documents state there were two more occasions where Ms Mules saw her doctor, who failed to perform a physical examination of her and referred her on to have a CT scan. The following day, Ms Mules returned to see Dr Ferguson, who advised her the CT scan found she had five bulging discs.

On September 25, 2008 Ms Mules returned to see Dr Ferguson and complained of worsening pain.

The doctor organised her admission to the Cairns Private Hospital and the following day she was observed as suffering from symptoms including profound deafness, sluggish pupils, bilaterally swollen neck, facial weakness and decreased reflexes and power.

The documents claim she was later diagnosed with a cryptococcal infection and was transferred to the hospital’s intensive care unit where she had hypertension on arrival.

Ms Mules now lives with her parents and requires full-time care. Her damages include past loss ($156,000), loss of earning capacity ($765,000), future special damages ($791,000), post gratuitous care ($583,087) and future gratuitous care ($5.15 million). A defence has not yet been filed.

I have a persistent cough but it only happens when I felt hot. sometimes it also occurs during sleeping. I've had this about more than a month. I have no loss of my appetite and no loss weight too. I think you dont have tuberculosis, maybe just an allergy on air thats why you cough when exposed to it. if you already consulted a doctor and still not getting well after taking his medicine prescription, then its time to change your doctor

WHAT IS INFLUENZA (FLU) AND HOW IS IT CAUSED?

Influenza is a contagious disease caused by a virus. A virus is a germ that is very small. Influenza viruses infect many parts of the body, including the lungs.

When someone who has influenza sneezes, coughs, or even talks, the influenza virus is expelled into the air and may be inhaled by anyone close by.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET INFLUENZA?

When influenza strikes the lungs, the lining of the respiratory tract is damaged. The tissues become swollen and inflamed. Fortunately, the damage is rarely permanent. The tissues usually heal within a few weeks.

Influenza is often called a respiratory disease, but it affects the whole body. The victim usually becomes acutely ill with fever, chills, weakness, loss of appetite and aching of the head, back, arms and legs. The influenza sufferer may also have a sore throat and a dry cough, nausea, and burning eyes.

For anyone at high risk, influenza is a very serious illness. you may be at high risk if you:

Many experts now recommend that any person who wishes to avoid the flu should be vaccinated. This includes those suffering from asthma. A recent American Lung Association;reg study found that the flu vaccine is safe for, and well tolerated in, people with asthma. Another recent study suggested that the vaccine may be important for infants.

HOW ARE INFLUENZA AND COMPLICATIONS PREVENTED?

Influenza can be prevented with a high degree of success when a person receives the current influenza vaccine or influenza shot. This vaccine is made each year so that the vaccine can contain influenza viruses that are expected to cause illness that year.

The viruses in the vaccine are inactivated so that someone vaccinated cannot get influenza from the vaccine. instead the person vaccinated develops protection in his or her body in the form of substances called antibodies.

The amount of antibodies in the body is greatest 1 or 2 months after vaccination and then gradually declines. For that reason and because the influenza viruses usually change each year, people should be vaccinated each fall with the new vaccine.

October 15th to November 15th is the best time to get your influenza shot. such a yearly vaccination has been found to be about 75 percent effective in preventing influenza. It may also reduce the severity of influenza and can be lifesaving. However, it's OK to get the shot earlier. Since the vaccine takes about 2 weeks to begin its effect. A later vaccination can also provide substantial protection. until the flu season is over, it's never "too late" to get a flu shot.

The influenza shot is covered by Medicare and some other health plans.

At the first sign of influenza symptoms see your doctor. Some doctors use a new rapid point of care test given in a doctors office which can diagnose all strains of influenza A and B. Many physicians now use antiviral medications when they are confident of the diagnosis.

Two antiviral drugs called amantadine and rimantadine can be used to help prevent and treat influenza A. Newer antiviral drugs, Zanamivir and Oseltamivir, are active against both A & B types.

WHAT ABOUT REACTIONS TO THE VACCINE?

Most people have little or no reaction to the vaccine. One in four might have a swollen, red, tender area where the vaccination was given.

A much smaller number, probably more children than adults, might also develop a slight fever within 24 hours. they may have chills or a headache, or feel a little sick. People who already have a respiratory disease may find their symptoms worsened. Usually none of these reactions lasts for more than a few days.

In addition, adverse reactions to the vaccine, perhaps allergic in nature, have been observed insome people. these could be due to an egg protein allergy because the egg in which the virus is grown cannot be completely extracted. these people should be vaccinated only if their doctorbelieves it necessary and if the vaccine is given under close observation by a doctor.

WHO SHOULD BE VACCINATED?

People at high risk should be vaccinated yearly against influenza. In addition, those who provide care to high-risk patients should be vaccinated.

If you are not in a high-risk group, you may want to be vaccinated to avoid the flu and its complications.

CAN YOU HAVE A RECURRENCE OF INFLUENZA?

A person can have influenza more than once. Here's why: The virus that causes influenza may belong to one of three different influenza virus families, A, B or C. Influenza A and influenza B are the major families.

Within each influenza virus family are many viral strains, like so many brothers and sisters. Both A and B have strains that cause illnesses of varying severity. But the influenza A family has more virulent strains than the B family.

If you have influenza, your body responds by developing antibodies. The following year, a new family member or a member of another family may appear. your antibodies are less effective or ineffective against this unfamiliar strain. If you are exposed to it, you may come down with influenza again.

HOW ARE INFLUENZA AND COMPLICATIONS TREATED?

For uncomplicated influenza, your doctor will probably tell you to stay in bed at home as long as the sickness is severe, and perhaps for about two days after the fever is gone. Common medications, such as acetaminophen, are used to treat fever and aches and pains.

Two antiviral drugs called amantadine and rimantadine have to be used for treating someone who develops influenza A, particularly if given as soon as possible after the onset of influenza. these drugs also can be used as a preventive measure, but for prevention it must be taken daily as long as influenza cases continue to occur in a community.

Your doctor would have to decide whether to use an antiviral drug either for prevention or treatment. If it is used for treating an early case of influenza, it may shorten this illness and reduce the severity. I developed a really bad cough over a week ago, my lungs sound like they're full of phlegm but I can't cough any of it up. And I don't have any other symptoms. It's really annoying because I can't go more than 5 minutes without coughing. does anyone have any suggestions of what this might be?

PARIS (AFP) – Swine flu can infect cells deeper in the lungs than seasonal flu, thus helping to boost the severity of the illness, a study released on Thursday said.

The paper provides the first laboratory corroboration of reports from front-line doctors that some patients with a (H1N1) virus suffer worse symptoms compared to those with run-of-the-mill seasonal flu.

Influenza viruses penetrate cells by attaching themselves to molecules called receptors, located on the outside of the cell wall.

The virus’ docking spike and the receptor are like a key and a lock. some viruses only open a few cells, while others have something rather closer to a pass key, making it possible to infect a larger cell variety.

Once inside, the virus uses the cell’s machinery to replicate, eventually bursting the cell and going on to attack others.

Seasonal strains attach themselves almost exclusively to cells found in the nose, throat and upper airway, producing a some of influenza’s signature symptoms: runny nose, scratchy throat, a dry cough.

But the new research, published in the journal Nature Biotechnology, shows that the new swine flu — by sticking to a greater range of receptors — can also breach cells deep in the lungs.

Lab-dish experiments were carried out by ten Feizi of Imperial College London and colleagues in which 86 different receptors were exposed to both seasonal and pandemic flu.

The seasonal strains only locked onto the kind of receptors found in the upper respiratory track.

But the swine flu virus was also able to latch onto receptors found deep inside the lungs, albeit more weakly. the adhesion results in a more severe lung infection.

Feizi spelt out the risk of what could happen if natural selection encourages viral strains that favour this deep-lung penetration.

"If the flu virus mutates in the future, it may attach to the receptors deep inside the lungs more strongly, and this could mean that more people would experience severe symptoms," said Feizi.

"we think scientists should be on the lookout for these kinds of changes in the virus so we can try to find ways to minimise the impact."

Using a statistical technique, epidemiologists sifting through data from other countries have found similarly disquieting patterns.

French epidemiologist Antoine Flahault has reported a 100-fold increase, compared to seasonal flu, in the number of swine flu deaths in Mauritius and new Caledonia attributed directly to the virus itself rather than secondary bacterial infections or underlying conditions.

Many of those deaths were caused by acute respiratory disease syndrome (ARDS), which requires intensive-care treatment for an average of three weeks. only 50 percent of ARDS patients survive.

I need ot know if you or anybody you know has it or had it, and what was the sypmtoms. I know at first there is no symptoms until people find a painful lump under their necks that will not go away and have no infection or sore throat and antibotics does not work as a cancer nurse told me sometimes a lump can be painful, and some are not, and I looked on the internet last night and the site toldme a dry cough it one of them. please tell me the sypmtoms, or have I already covered it? this is for personal reasons.

Cancer of the lymph nodes is a symptom of Cancer elsewhere in the body and shows that the Cancer has has spread to other vital parts of the body.The lymph nodes trap the floating cancer cells and try to prevent them from damaging the vital parts.when the protective function fails, the lymph nodes themselves get affected.. Hence if the lyph nodes show symptoms of swelling and pain , it is time for an urgent total check up for ruling out advanced stage of Carcinoma of any of the major organs of the body.

You seem to be attempting a self diagnosis based on the casual advice of the nurse . this is no way to deal with such cases. Don't imagine diseases of such seriousness. because such pre-occupations harm the delicate preventive system of the body. Go with an open mind to see a general practitioner( your family physician) .He/She will decide whether there is any cause for worry and also whether there should be any further investigation

painful to touch or even look up. I have been placed on antiboitics Keflex and it has not worked for the first time. The doctor did bloods tests today. he found out I do not have a sore throat, or a tempreture as it is normal. I feel sometimes very feverish, and very unwell. Last night at my mothers house I had a dry cough. On Thursday this week I will be going in for an ultrasound for my neck.Does ultrasouds pick up anything that is mallignant? if if shows a lump as it will My next step that may be recomemded to me is a biopsy. Most of the time it feels like I have to flu even though I do not, as it is summer here in Australia, and I feel so run down. Last Saturday evening for the first time I started gasping for air, and found it hard to breath and I though I was going to die. A lump under or shall I say in my neck and I tell you when I lift my head up it is very painfull and tonight I had a dry cough at my mothers house when I went there for dinner.I have not got a sore throat, or a fever, although it feels like I do, and I feel tired most of the time. I do not want to jumpt to conclusions here but what are the signs of Hogkins, lypmphnona(how ever you spell it). should I leave it for a few weeks to see if it goes away, or get on to it ASAP. My mother told me if it is serious and I leave it it may be too late. has anyone on here had or have got Hogkins or lymphna cancer of the lypmpnodes. What are you sypmtoms. I am 10 days late with my period and have had bowel cancer, but have not got the cancer anymore. My mother went through menopause at 34 after she gave birth to my brother. no I am not pregnant. so could this mean I am or will be going through menopause soon. I hope so.

Because last sunday morning there was a man preaching on the persecution of Gods saints through out the world, and I was the only one in the church who was 2 angels behind him that were bright, even though I could not see the features of their face, you could tell they were very tall, and they were wearing a robe and were looking at me. I had bowel cancer then, and the next day all my symptoms were gone and so was the cancer, praise God. so can Gods angels be sent for that purpose. The next day all my teasts were normal thank goodness. And everything has returned to normal.

Is it normal to have a lymphnode on your left hand side in pain and not going away?

It is awfully sore to touch and when I move my head if becomes uncomftable too, and I feel run down somedays like I have a virus. I got my temprature checked out at the doctors the other day and my tempreture was normal, My gland on my left hand side is up and has been up for quite a while, and it has been very tender the last week and I am on antibiotics but they are not wroking at all. is this normal?And my period are now 11 days late, and I am not pregnant as I am not seeing any man. Do you think I need a biopsy. this year have not been good for me as I just got over bowel cancer, and now this. I am almost 38 years old, unfortunatley. My grandmother who died of a stroke as she was diebetic, and my mother who has to take insulin all the time has it with complications. I had a blood test last week, but it was not for mu sugar level, it was mainly to check my Iron level, but did not realise they did my sugar as well. I just had lunch and drank soft drink, and had breakfast that morning too. It showed not fasting 4.6. How much difference would it have made if it was fasting in the morning and got it done then? I keep fit and run 4-5 days per week. I am not over weight, and do not smoke. I have good blood pressure, and pulse rate. I do not want to get the disease, even though my family history is very strong. My mother never ran or excersised much even when she was growing up. I had an athletic back ground, and like to go for my 40-50 runs most days. can I still avoid getting diebetes.as I do not want it. Just about everywhere you turn, it seems, ?people are coughing and spluttering. Yet a recent study by the University of Leicester found that although coughs are one of the most common ?complaints seen by GPs, only 60 per cent of people find a cause.

Coughs are mainly a protective reflex to remove foreign ?bodies, mucus or irritants such as dust from the respiratory tract, explains Alyn Morice, professor of respiratory ?medicine at the University of Hull, and one of the country’s leading experts.

‘But persistent coughs can also be caused by viruses and ?infections,’ he says.

If your cough lasts for more than eight weeks, he advises ?seeing a GP.

‘a chest X-ray should be ?performed to rule out any serious ?underlying ?disease. however, see your doctor immediately if you experience ?symptoms you’ve never had before, such as coughing up blood.’

Here, we talk to the UK’s cough experts to help you work out what’s behind your symptoms  . . .

A stubborn dry cough that comes and goes, but never quite ?disappears. it usually occurs during the day, prompting a coughing fit that lasts around ten minutes. In extreme cases, sufferers experience ?incontinence and even fractured ribs.

CAUSE: Such coughs used to be ?simply written off as ‘unexplained’. But doctors have recently ?discovered that in some cases the problem is hypersensitivity in the upper ?airways, triggered by a reflux of gas from the stomach.

‘This gas is like a mist — ?containing air, bits of food and stomach enzymes, which irritate the upper area of the throat,’ explains ?Professor Morice.

Once this hypersensitivity has set in, sufferers will have a coughing fit if anything — such as dust or cold air — touches their throat. however, not everyone who has gas reflux will develop a cough as a symptom.

TREATMENT: Some antihistamines and small doses of ?morphine, ?prescribed by a specialist, might help, says Professor Morice. for ?immediate relief, suck a strong menthol ?lozenge, such as Fisherman’s Friend.

CHRONIC, TICKLY COUGH

Although this cough doesn’t ?produce phlegm, you feel as if mucus or catarrh is dripping down the back of your throat. sometimes it can also feel as if there’s a lump in the throat.

CAUSE: This is known as a post-nasal drip — the cause of about 7 per cent of coughs, says Professor Peter Barnes, head of ?respiratory medicine at Imperial College, London.

Normally, we produce up to four pints of clear thin mucus every day from the glands which line the nose and sinuses. This usually drips ?unnoticed down your throat.

However, when mucus becomes thick or if there is a lot of it — usually due to an allergy or ?infection, such as a cold or flu — it triggers a ?coughing reflex as it drips down the throat.

TREATMENT: Products such as Otrivin, a non-steroid, can give immediate relief by reducing ?swelling in the nose and the post-nasal drip.

Administer the drops with the head down and forward, so that the ?liquid flows into the sinuses — don’t tip your head back or the drops will go straight into your stomach.

However, Professor Barnes advises only using these for a few days.

‘if used for longer, once you stop you get a rebound effect and the condition gets worse.’

If post-nasal drip is caused by an allergy, such as cats, house dust or hay fever, you might need a topical nasal steroid, such as Beconase, to dampen down the inflammatory responses ?causing the drip, says Dr Anindo Banerjee, a consultant respiratory physician at ?Southampton General Hospital. see your GP about allergy tests.

The cough might be accompanied by some wheezing, but no phlegm. it occurs at night and intermittently during the day.

CAUSE: This cough usually happens after a bout of cold, flu or other ?respiratory infections and might be caused by increased inflammation in the airways, says Dr Nicholas ?Hopkinson, a consultant respiratory physician at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

TREATMENT: In most cases, it should go away by itself after a few weeks, says Professor Barnes. Lozenges can help — choose those with a strong ?flavour, as they will promote ?salivation to help coat and soothe a sore throat.

Symptoms might also be eased by leaning over a bowl of boiling water with a towel over your head, as ?moisture from the steam will soothe and lubricate the airways. Adding a few drops of menthol might help.

SPASMS OF DRY COUGHING

A painful cough could be caused by bronchitis

A coughing fit starts as a tickle at the back of the throat; in some cases, coughing can lead to vomiting.

CAUSE: certain ?medications can cause coughing, particularly ACE inhibitors, prescribed for high blood pressure, explains Professor Barnes.

This ?usually happens in about 15 per cent of people who use them — possibly because the drugs stop the ?breakdown of a naturally-occurring chemical called bradykinin which, in turn, makes the nerve endings in the lungs more sensitive to irritation.

TREATMENT: Your GP can ?prescribe alternative blood pressure ?medications, such as ?angiotensin II receptor antagonists, advises ?Professor Ron Eccles, director of the Common cold Centre at Cardiff University.

Around 90 per cent of users who swap medication clear their cough within a week or so, although it can take up to three months.

PAINFUL, HACKING COUGH

A constant cough, that is ?particularly bad in the morning. it tends to bring up thick yellowy/grey or green/rust-coloured mucus. there might also be pain behind the breast bone, a sore throat, ?wheezing and a blocked nose.

CAUSE: the likely cause is acute bronchitis, an infection of the large airways of the lungs (bronchi), which causes them to become ?irritated and inflamed. This often starts after a respiratory infection, such as a cold.

Acute bronchitis itself is usually caused by a virus — but around 5 to 10 per cent of cases are triggered by bacteria; in bacterial infections, the phlegm will be green or rust ?coloured, says Dr Sneh Khemka, medical ?director of BUPA International.

This cough could be confused with a swine flu cough. however, a cough caused by swine flu would usually be accompanied by a high fever (usually above 38C) sore throat, headache, aching muscles, chills and shivers, a fever, upset stomach and general exhaustion, says Dr Banerjee.

TREATMENT: Bed rest and drinking lots of fluids to prevent ?dehydration and to thin the mucus, making it ?easier to cough up. Over-the-?counter products might relieve your cough, although they cannot speed up your recovery.

‘look for medicines containing linctus,’ says Professor Morice, ‘as this ingredient lessens the cough by lining the back of the throat.’

Products such as Robitussin ?contain the cough suppressant dextromethorphan. however, many over-the-counter cough ?medicines also contain ?paracetamol, so if you are already taking it to relieve your headaches or fever, make sure you don’t exceed the maximum dose.

If you are breathless, feel unwell or the cough lasts longer than a week, or the phlegm coughed up is a green, rusty colour, see your GP.

THROAT-?CLEARING COUGH

It feels like you have a lump in your throat and coughing leaves you with a nasty, bitter taste in the mouth. the cough can be ?triggered by talking, laughing, singing or eating particularly dry food. it also tends to occur at night.

CAUSE: the most likely cause is stomach acid splashing up the ?gullet — this affects about 25 per cent of the adult Western ?population and is known as reflux. As the lining of the gullet is extremely soft and sensitive, this leads to inflammation, which ?triggers a coughing fit.

Reflux can lead to a condition called Barrett’s Oesophagus — this causes ?abnormalities in the cells and raises the risk of ?oesophageal cancer.

TREATMENT: Over-the-counter ?antacids such as Alka-Seltzer can neutralise acid in the stomach.

Other drugs, known as H2 ?blockers (available both on ?prescription or over the counter) act on acid production. cut back on ?exacerbating factors, such as ?coffee, high-fat food or going to bed shortly after a large meal, and try to avoid eating after 9pm, says Professor Morice. if you suffer with reflux for a ?couple of months, see your GP.

DRY COUGH WITH WHEEZE

You tend to cough more during the night or first thing in the morning.

CAUSE: one likely culprit is asthma. ‘Ten per cent of asthma sufferers don’t realise they have it,’ says Dr Keith Prowse, of the British Lung Foundation. when someone with asthma comes into contact with something that irritates their airways, the muscles around the airways tighten.

An asthma cough can be triggered by a cold, exposure to certain foods or irritants, such as pollen. it is not known why the cough is worse at night or in the morning.

TREATMENT: Your GP can normally diagnose asthma with tests. the first line of ?treatment involves inhalers to open up the airways and make it easier to breathe.

If inhalers are ineffective, inhaled steroids can ease a severe or ?prolonged attack of asthma and reduce the inflammation in the airways.

BREATHLESS, PAINFUL COUGH

A persistent cough ?accompanied by shortness of breath.

Other symptoms might include coughing up blood, loss of ?appetite, losing weight and a dull ache or sharp pain in the lung area when you cough or take a deep breath. This cough is unrelenting and ?happens most of the time.

CAUSE: one possibility is lung ?cancer. ‘the problem is that it is possible to mistake these ?symptoms for a chest infection,’ explains Dr Jesme Fox, medical director of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

‘the difference is that the cough persists for weeks, with little sign of getting better.

‘though lung cancer is quite rare, it’s vital you don’t ignore these symptoms and get checked out by your GP, just to be sure,’ she adds.

TREATMENT: This depends on the type of lung cancer — though often it involves surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. 

This brings up lots of phlegm — and there can be wheezing, chest ?tightness and some ?difficulty breathing.

It’s often worse in the mornings and the ?winter, as it’s exacerbated by viruses that affect the lungs.

CAUSE: Chronic Obstructive ?Pulmonary Disease (COPD) — the ?collective name for lung ?conditions, such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD is commonly caused by smoking.

However, about 10 per cent of cases happen in non-smokers due to exposure to dust, air pollution and family history.

It usually affects people over 40, as the damage to the lungs that causes COPD happens gradually.

‘the ?important thing is to notice symptoms that haven’t happened before, such as this chesty cough or breathlessness,’ says Dr Keith Prowse, of the British Lung ?Foundation.

‘it could be a sign of the disease and they should see their GP.’

TREATMENT: there is no cure for COPD, but the damage can be slowed. the most important steps are to stop smoking, avoid ?passive exposure and exercise as much as you can.

Short and long acting inhalers will help with breathlessness by widening the airways.

Steam inhalation and ?humidifying rooms can also help by ?loosening mucus.

Jefferson County Public Health reported Monday that there are now 150 confirmed cases of whooping cough in the county.

The illness, also known as pertussis, has been spreading rapidly this month.

On November 8, officials first announced whooping cough was present in the county with nine confirmed cases.

Lewis County now has three cases, which is up from one.

St. Lawrence County has one case.

Whooping cough may begin with cold-like symptoms or a dry cough that progresses to episodes of severe coughing in about 1 to 2 weeks.

Pertussis is primarily spread by direct contact with discharges from the nose and throat of infected individuals.

Adult Vaccination important to Prevent Whooping Cough in Children

WATERTOWN, NY – November 22, 2010 – Pertussis cases continue to increase in Jefferson County.  as of November 21, 2010, 150 cases have been confirmed through physician and health care provider testing.  Jefferson County Public Health Service urges all adults to have the Tdap vaccination.  even though most adults received this vaccine as children, over time the protection wears off and a booster is needed.

Tdap vaccination will protect adults and their family from pertussis (whooping cough).  Protection occurs within 10-14 days of vaccination.  This is not a treatment.  If someone has already been exposed to whooping cough this will not prevent them from developing the disease.  even with this vaccination any antibiotic treatment that has been started to treat or prevent pertussis should be finished as prescribed. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend immunization for all adults and adolescents as the best way to prevent the spread of pertussis among young children.  Babies are most vulnerable before they can have their first vaccine against pertussis at two months of age, however, babies under six months are still very much at risk.  This youngest age group is most vulnerable to severe disease and death from pertussis. Children are not fully protected until they have been vaccinated with the entire primary series, usually by age 6.

Because immunity from early childhood vaccination decreases over time, adults and teens can become infected with pertussis time and again, putting themselves and young children at risk. Boosting reduces the risk of contracting pertussis and can decrease severity of disease.

Only combination vaccines are used to prevent diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis including DTaP and Tdap.                    

DTaP is usually given to children younger than 7 years of age. Tdap is licensed for those 10 to 64 years of age, however, as of October 2010, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has recommended that it be given to children over the age of 7 (if underimmunized or their vaccination status is not known) and adults 65 years of age and older. Studies have shown that children who received three or four doses were 80%-85% less likely to develop pertussis than unvaccinated children. Tdap vaccine is believed to be similar in effectiveness and duration of immunity as pediatric DTaP vaccines. to provide optimum pertussis vaccine coverage, children ages 2 months to 6 years should receive all age appropriate doses of DTaP vaccine which includes a booster dose between the ages of 4-6 years, prior to school attendance. This will result in 5 doses being administered which exceeds the current NYS school requirement, but is recommended to provide maximum coverage. in 2005, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended a dose of a combination tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine or Tdap for use in 11 through 64 year olds.

Here are the key recommendations for using Tdap to date, including new ACIP recommendations:

- among adolescents who have completed their childhood pertussis vaccinations, Tdap is routinely recommended as a single dose with preferred administration at 11 to 12 years of age. Tdap vaccine is required for school attendance by NYS Public Health Law. This includes grades 6 through 9 for the 2010-11 school year.

- If an adolescent patient was not fully vaccinated for pertussis as a child or to meet school requirements, check the ACIP recommendations and catch-up schedule to determine what’s indicated. Children ages 7 to 10 years who are underimmunized against pertussis or for whom vaccination status isn’t known can and should  receive a dose of the Tdap vaccine.

- Any adult 19 through 64 years old who has not received a dose of Tdap should get one. This can replace one of the 10-year Td booster doses.

- People older than 64 who have contact with infants younger than 12 months and/or haven’t received the Tdap vaccine should receive Tdap in place of the Td vaccine.

- it is no longer necessary to wait the typical 10 years to get the adult dose of Tdap after the last dose of Td.

- Women should ideally receive Tdap before becoming pregnant. Pregnant women who were not vaccinated previously with Tdap should receive Tdap in the immediate postpartum period before discharge from hospital or birthing center. although pregnancy is not a contraindication for receiving Tdap vaccine, healthcare providers should weigh the risks and benefits before choosing to administer Tdap vaccine to a pregnant womanincluding the possibility of increased risk of contracting pertussis during a community outbreak. Keep in mind that Tdap is not just for moms, it’s for all family members and caregivers of the infant.

- Healthcare personnel who work in hospitals or ambulatory care settings and have direct patient contact should receive a single dose of Tdap as soon as feasible. Priority should be given to vaccination of healthcare personnel who have direct contact with infants 12 months of age and younger.

- Tdap is preferred to Td for adults vaccinated >5 years earlier who require a tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine as part of wound management. Adults aged 19 years and older who require a tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine as part of wound management should receive Tdap instead of Td if they have not previously received Tdap.

- The Tdap vaccine is a killed vaccine that protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. – The body makes antibodies to fight off the pertussis bacteria in the vaccine. – These antibodies remain in the body’s immune system. – If the body is exposed to pertussis bacteria, the antibodies respond and fight it off. – Protection from pertussis decreases over time. – Vaccination with a booster is needed every ten years to stay protected. – The risks associated with pertussis, tetanus or diphtheria infection are far greater than the possible side effects of the DTaP and Tdap booster vaccines that prevent these deadly diseases among young children, adolescents and adults. – The Tdap booster vaccine extends protection against tetanus and diphtheria as well as pertussis among adults and adolescents.

Jefferson County Public Health Service offers both Tdap and DTaP vaccine at their immunization clinic on Wednesdays from 12:30-3:30 P.M, at 531 Meade St., Watertown.  Adults and children ages 7 and older who are underimmunized against pertussis or for whom vaccination status isn’t known can receive Tdap.  At this time there is no charge for Tdap.  DTaP is available for children age 2 months to six years that are underimmunized or unimmunized.  there is a charge of $5 per family for DTaP.  for additional information about obtaining vaccinations, please contact your primary care provider or call the Jefferson County Public Health Service at 786-3720.
