Vale Dyspraxia Support Group appeals for volunteer leaders

THE Vale Dyspraxia Support Group is appealing for volunteers to come forward to run the organisation.

the Barry family members who have run the group for the last seven years are moving out of the area, and they are desperate for someone to take over the reins.

VDSG provides support and advice for parents, carers, families and others that are affected by dyspraxia.

They currently provide members with monthly meetings, an advice line, and links to a range of other organisations.

They also arrange social activities including 10-pin bowling, cinema trips, boat trips and visits to the likes of Techniquest.

“We are considering moving to Oxford and we are not going to be able carry on with the group if we move there,” said one of the co-ordinators.

“After seven and a half years the group could do with some fresh leadership too.

“We are asking for people to come forward, for us to find out a little bit more about them, and see if people in the meetings feel happy for them to lead the group and take it forward from us.”

Dyspraxia is a condition where the normal process of development of physical actions that require co-ordination is delayed or disturbed.

Typically a child with dyspraxia has difficulty with their gross motor skills, including activities such as throwing, catching and running, as well as fine motor skills, such as handwriting.

Dyspraxia is part of a group of conditions that include dyslexia and ADHD, with many children having symptoms of one or more of these conditions.

Demand for Dyslexia, ADHD Treatment Sees Dore Open Centre inWellington

Strong demand from the Wellington region forits programme that helps people with dyslexia, ADHD,dyspraxia and Asperger’s has led learning difficultyorganisation Dore to open a centre in lower Hutt.

Doregeneral manager Peter Sargent says opening the lower Huttcentre will make it far more convenient for residents ofWellington and surrounding regions undertaking theprogramme, as they will no longer have to travel to Aucklandor Christchurch every three months for theirassessments.

Dore is a drug-free, exercise-based programmefor people with learning difficulties such as dyslexia,dyspraxia, ADHD and Asperger’s. It is estimated that onein every six people suffer some form of learningdifficulty.

Sargent says the programme tackles the rootcause of learning difficulties by improving the efficiencyof the cerebellum – the brain’s “skill developmentcentre” – and the part of the brain now understood toplay a significant role in learning, coordination, emotionalcontrol and motor skills. “The key factor differentiatingDore from most other treatments for learning difficulties isthat the programme doesn’t just treat the symptoms, butaddresses the root cause.”

Dore works with children overthe age of seven, teenagers and adults of any age. Theoldest client to complete the programme was aged83.

Following their assessment clients are prescribedan exercise-based programme tailored to their own particularneeds from a range of over 400 different exercises. Theexercises are undertaken for about 10 minutes twice a dayand focus on stimulating the cerebellum and making it workmore efficiently.

“Our programme helps the body toaddress the affliction from within, providing a lastingresult and, because it is drug-free, there aren’t any sideeffects”, says Sargent.

Each programme is tailored tothe individual and the average length of time to completionis about 12 months. During this time, participants oftensee a dramatic transformation in their learningability.
