How many died?

Because data are poor, historians arrive at different estimates of the number that died. in the period 1846–1851 between 1,000,000 and 1,500,000 people died: we cannot be certain of the number. besides, births and marriages dropped significantly. those hardest hit were the agricultural labourers, the class that had increased most rapidly in numbers in the decades before the Famine. As Karl Marx stated, ‘The Irish famine of 1846 killed more than 1,000,000 people, but it killed poor devils only’ (Capital, i, pt vii, chapter 25). The poor were the first and the most to die. The unprecedented scale of deaths was not due to starvation alone: infectious diseases such as typhus, relapsing fever, and cholera, killed very many.Famine deaths and diseases

Starvation is a slow killer. first the body uses up all its deposits of fat. The metabolic rate sinks and physical and mental activity declines. Blood pressure falls. The internal organs, including the intestines, degenerate. The skin grows paper-thin, dull, grey and blotchy. Fluid is retained in the body (famine oedema). Normally, one-third of body weight is lost before death occurs. The final stages are uncontrolled diarrhoea and cardiovascular collapse. Children under the age of five are particularly vulnerable. they suffer from muscle waste, a wizened and shrunken appearance that makes them look like old men and old women, swelling of the abdomen and lower limbs, lesions and darkening of the skin, and diarrhoea. Reports describe these conditions:

… a vast number of impotent folk, whose gaunt and wasted frames and ghastly, emaciated faces were too obvious signs of the suffering they had endured. The little boys and girls presented a hideous sight. in many instances, their heads had become bald and their faces wrinkled like old men and women of seventy or eighty years of age. [Thomas Armstrong, My life in Connaught (London 1906) 13; repr. in L. a. Clarkson & E. Margaret Crawford, Feast and famine: a history of food and nutrition in Ireland, 1500–1920 (Oxford 2001) 140]

… we entered a cabin. Stretched out in one dark corner … were three children huddled together, lying there because they were too weak to rise, pale and ghastly, their little limbs … perfectly emaciated, eyes sunk, voices gone, and evidently in the last stages of actual starvation. on some straw … was a shrivelled old woman, imploring us to give her something,—baring her limbs partly, to show how the skin hung loose from the bone. [William Bennett, ‘Extracts from an account of his journey in Ireland’, Transactions of the Central Relief Committee of the Society of Friends during the Famine in Ireland 1846 and 1847 (Dublin 1852) 163; repr. Clarkson & Crawford, ibid.]

With hunger came the vitamin deficiency diseases: scurvy, pellagra and xerophthalmia that get worse the longer hunger continues. Scurvy is caused by deficiency of vitamin C. Symptoms are swollen bleeding gums with loosened teeth, soreness and stiffness of the joints and lower extremities, excruciating pain, bleeding under the skin and in deep tissues, and eventually death by haemorrhage. It had been rare in Ireland because potatoes have adequate vitamin C. now it became common. Sudden deaths of workers on relief schemes can be attributed to scurvy. Pellagra, caused by a deficiency of niacin (part of the vitamin B complex), is characterised by dermatitis, diarrhoea, and dementia. This was caused by malnutrition, mostly over-dependence on a relief diet of Indian corn. Xerophthalmia is an eye disease associated with vitamin a deficiency and malnutrition in general. Children aged from three to five are particularly vulnerable. Symptoms are night blindness and, later, ulceration of the cornea, leading to blindness. all these conditions are reported during the Famine.

In famines, most people do not die of hunger but of hunger-related fevers and diseases. The most important of these are typhus, relapsing fever, dysentery, and cholera.

Epidemic typhus is caused by the bacterium Rickettsia prowazekii, which is carried by the human body louse (Pediculus humanus; Irish míol cnis). Lice become infected by feeding off an infected human: there is no known animal reservoir. when infected lice feed on a human, they may defecate. when the person scratches the bite, the faeces (which carry the bacteria) are scratched into the wound or into the mucous membranes. Typhus can also be caught by inhaling the faecal dust of lice in bedding and clothing. The incubation period is seven days. Symptoms are headache, coughing, muscle pain; abrupt onset of high fever, chills, prostration; and mental confusion. By the sixth day, a rash appears on the trunk and spreads, and may become haemorrhagic and necrotic. other common manifestations are delirium, photophobia, eye pain, kidney failure and enlargement of the spleen. without modern treatments, nearly 100% of patients die of the disease in epidemic conditions.

Louse-borne relapsing fever is caused by the spirochete bacterium Borrelia recurrentis. No animal reservoir exists: pediculus humanus is the vector. The louse feeding on infected humans acquires the bacterium which then multiplies in the gut of the louse. The louse bite itself will not transmit the bacterium to another person. when an infected louse feeds on an uninfected human, the organism gains access when the victim crushes the louse or scratches the area where the louse is feeding. Borrelia recurrentis infects the patient either through the scratches or through mucous membranes (including nasal ones) and then invades the bloodstream. The incubation period is 2 to 14 days. The patient develops a sudden-onset high fever. The initial episode usually lasts 3–6 days and is usually followed by a single, milder episode. The fever episode may end in a “crisis”—shaking chills, followed by intense sweating, falling temperature, and low blood pressure. This stage may result in death after several cycles of fever, patients may develop dramatic central nervous system symptoms such as seizures, stupor, and coma. The disease may also attack heart and liver tissues, causing inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) and inflammation of the liver (hepatitis). Diffuse bleeding and pneumonia are other complications. Mortality rates from 30 to 70% are reported in untreated patients during epidemics.

Typhus and relapsing fever spread rapidly where there is poor hygiene and where lice-infested starving people crowded together in workhouses, fever hospital, feeding centres, and crowded ships without sanitation; and in the squalid, decrepit, and hideously over-crowded urban areas to which famine victims fled. Unwashed clothing and bedding are an ideal environment for the proliferation of lice. Irish mortality rates are those typically reported for untreated typhus and relapsing fever epidemics.

Dysentery is an illness involving severe diarrhoea, often with bloody faeces, vomiting, septicaemia, and fever. It is caused by the bacterium Shigella dysenteriae and is highly contagious. It is a major threat in crowded areas with inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene, and bad water because it is spread by faecal contamination, whether by personal contact or water-borne. Epidemic dysentery is fatal in about 5–15% of cases—particularly to children, the elderly, and the under-nourished. Deaths from dysentery rose sharply in 1846–7, and remained high until 1849.

Cholera appeared in 1849. It is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by infection of the intestine by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. when the infection is severe it is characterised by profuse watery diarrhoea, vomiting, and leg cramps. Rapid loss of body fluids leads to dehydration and shock. without treatment, death can occur within hours. The disease is got by drinking contaminated water or eating contaminated food. in an epidemic, the source is usually the faeces of infected persons and cholera spreads rapidly where there is inadequate treatment of sewage and drinking water. its effects were most severe about the ports. It was the principal killer after typhus and relapsing fever.

Mortality from other diseases—especially tuberculosis, measles, scarlet fever—rose rapidly in a population whose immune system was lowered by hunger and exposure.

This fellow is the lone surviving lamb. they didn’t even get a fresh ewe out of the deal. It might be useful for political leaders to consider the story of how you can spend money and actually loose capital by not properly managing things.

The autumn before, Marsha’s neighbours had gotten a big, black ram. his appetite, combined with that of the three ewes was a bit much for their small, unmanaged pasture. It turns out there’s a big difference between different kinds of grass. (Consider, all our grains are grasses of one sort or another.) Aside from some rudimentary shelter, their diet was not augmented. As such they went into winter with little body fat. in addition to this, they were sheared too late and went into Oregon’s uniquely wet season with only a thin fuzz to keep them dry.

Marsha doesn’t know if the other lambs (there should have been at least three) were spontaneously aborted or still-born, but it is clear they died somehow from poor nutrition and/or exposure. Poor planning here resulted in suffering and loss. The investment in the ram turned into a negative when these people failed to consider how the various aspects of their system actually worked.

This sad outcome didn’t exactly surprise me, as these were the same people whose sheep turned green with algae one year when they just didn’t get around to shearing them in time.

To sum up: an animal’s ability to do work for you is highly correlated to its overall well-being and your ability to utilize its natural talents. Humans have evolved to be partners with animals.

things were beautiful and successful for her at the surface, but below that there was one thing she was not: secure.

In an address in front of 500 attendees at Emens Auditorium Monday night, Kole presented her personal account of a struggle with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, detailed the specifics of two eating disorders, and shared her realization of complete recovery from a potentially life-threatening disorder.

Kole began with a clip from the movie “Miss Congeniality” to help attendees evaluate their impressions of pageants and pageant contestants. She then recounted how her self-image was battered by interactions with fellow contestants at the 1998 Miss USA pageant in Louisiana.

“As contestants, we had talked big to one another about ourselves, but deep inside we were all so insecure,” Kole said. “Even the most perfect people by society’s standards feel insignificant.”

Kole admitted feeling “insecure ever since I can remember.”

her search for significance led to a bout with anorexia that developed at age 16.

“My once very directed life seemed aimless,” Kole said.

She cited national statistics that 8 million to 10 million Americans – 90 percent of them women – suffer from eating disorders. three of the four women in her college suite, including her, had battled eating disorders, she said.

“That was when I realized I had to take some action,” Kole said.

Kole has researched and advocated eating disorder education and prevention for the past decade. a Biola University graduate, she also received a master’s degree in Biblical studies from Dallas Theological Seminary.

An expert on eating disorders, Kole has written two books on the subject and received the Phoenix Sun’s Quality of Life Award for her work.

She has worked with Congresspeople to pass eating disorder legislation and recently spoke at Sen. Harry Reid’s national symposium on eating disorders.

Kole detailed symptoms and preventative and coping measures of both bulimia and anorexia. She reminded her audience not to discount the effects of another often-overlooked disorder, compulsive over-eating disorder, and that eating disorders can also affect men. Ten percent of men have such a disorder.

“There are a lot of people with bulimia or anorexia who don’t fit the stringent criteria,” Kole said.

Kole cited a study that anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness, possibly as high as 20 percent. Bulimia is also potentially life-threatening, she said.

Kole said the two reasons for eating disorder development are cultural pressure and emotional vulnerability.

She suggested that people should educate themselves then talk to a loved one in a supportive manner if they suspect he or she has a disorder. Persistence is key, she said.

“Ninety-two percent of eating disorder sufferers said in a study that they would welcome help,” Kole said.

Kole said the turning point in her struggle came during a counseling session. She hearkened back to her fourth-grade teacher’s personal motto, the verse John 10:10 from the Bible: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

“Eating disorders are not so much about having empty stomachs as having empty hearts and souls,” Kole said. “So few people are living full lives and are without purpose.”

Kole described how coming to know Jesus Christ as her personal savior restored meaning to her existence.

Kole was able to gain complete recovery from her disorder by accepting God’s loving provision for her life, and she gained all the fullness she needed through him, she said.

“For the first time, I had hope. someone loved me unconditionally,” Kole said. “My soul found its worth through a relationship with God.”

She left her audience with a parting message directly from her teacher’s favorite Bible verse: “Live life – to the full.”

Kole’s presentation directly affected some audience members.

“I related to her because I have had problems with both bulimia and anorexia,” freshman Erin Marie Whitacre said. “She was honest, and her gospel presentation was truthful.”

others also saw the talk as having a genuine impact.

“I liked that she covered satisfying a starving soul, adding the gospel for an effective presentation,” sophomore Kaitlyn Snyder said.

Sophomore Medea Curry said, “I liked how she incorporated the gospel into her talk.”

After the presentation, Kole reverberated the reason for her redemption.

“There is hope for people struggling with eating disorders and self-image issues,” she said. “I found my hope through a relationship with God.”

Kole is a national speaker who regularly travels to colleges, high schools and women’s groups to speak. her talk was sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ, Greek Life, Student Government Association, and Chi Omega, Alpha Omicron Pi and Delta Zeta sororities.

Eating disorders have one of the highest mortality rates of any illness —about 10 to 20 percent. furthermore, there is a .5 percent prevalence nationwide, a statistic that is much greater in the case of both college students and athletes. These circumstances added to the meaning and significance of “Before and After Image,” a discussion panel on eating disorders sponsored by the Student Health Center and Personal Counseling Center.

the panel provided students with information about eating disorders from a variety of professionals in the medical, psychological, and nutrition fields. They gave significant details of symptoms and trends to audience members to look for if they suspect that one of their friends have a eating problem.

Suzanne Bornschein, M.D., medical director at the Student Health Center, spoke about how disorder eating is like any other illness — there is a spectrum of mild and severe circumstances.

in addition, there are different kinds of disorder eating that involve restricting diet as well as binging and purging. it is not only females who suffer from this illness. About 10 percent of those who have an eating disorder are male. it is common in wrestlers who have to make their routine weight requirement.

“Just because you do not fit into a certain criteria does not mean you do not have an eating disorder,” said Bornschein. “You do not have to fit a category in order to be suffering and to be hurt.”

the panel went further than to merely explain the physical symptoms of disorder eating, many of which are common knowledge to the general public. They discussed how people with anorexia nervosa are usually in denial of the seriousness of their actions.

“They have ignored hunger long enough that they lose all understanding of their body,” said Bornschein.

“It becomes a personal competition with themselves, an obsessive-compulsive behavior.”

she also pointed out that people with eating disorders are often motivated, driven individuals who do well in school. They are often the people who would never be suspected of crying out inside.

“It is extremely hard work to do all of these things and to live a normal lifestyle,” said Bornschein. “It takes a lot of drive, which causes a lot of individuals to have anxiety as well.”

Michelle Smith, a dietician in Providence, also reflected on her experience working with people who practice disordered eating.

“It is hard to identify individuals suffering from bulemia because they actually eat,” said Smith. “You can look for signs of them going to the bathroom regularly within 30 minutes or one hour after eating. often they will be strict all day, and binge at night.”

Symptoms also include pushing food around on their plate, cooking for other people, or talking about food and never actually consuming.

the speakers urged students to talk to professionals at the Student Health Center or Personal Counseling Center if they are concerned about their own eating habits or those of a friend.

by Erin McGinty, LPC

At Castlewood, we believe in treating the underlying causes of our clients’ eating disorders. many of the clients we treat struggle with anxiety disorders in addition to the significant levels of anxiety they experience around eating disorder-related issues such as food, weight, body image, and so on.

In fact, many of our clients struggled with their anxiety disorders even before the eating disorder appeared; some studies have shown that this is true for as many as two-thirds of people struggling with both of an eating disorder and an anxiety disorder (Kaye et al., 2004).

Clients with anxiety disorders who come to Castlewood typically describe their eating disorder and their anxiety to be intricately linked together. Anxiety is among one of the many contributory factors found to be at the root of eating disorder symptoms, and results in higher degrees of perfectionism, obsessionality, avoidance, and body image dissatisfaction among clients who experience both an eating and anxiety disorder (Kaye et al., 2004). Anxiety is also an emotion that our clients have difficulty regulating without using their eating disorder or self-injury, and therefore becomes a trigger for many self-destructive behaviors.

Clients often have had either treatment exclusively for their eating disorder, or only for their anxiety disorder; many have not had treatment for both simultaneously. given the identified links between the two disorders, Castlewood’s treatment philosophy is that both disorders need to be treated at the same time in order to give clients the best chance at long-lasting recovery.

Castlewood utilizes exposure and response prevention therapy, a specific type of cognitive-behavioral therapy, to treat anxiety disorders. Clients are asked to identify anxiety-provoking situations that they typically avoid altogether or have difficulty tolerating without using ritual or harmful behaviors. we then gradually and repetitively expose clients to these situations, while requesting that they not engage in ritual behaviors to cope with the anxiety or fear that they experience. With this consistent exposure to feared situations, clients allow themselves to see that what they fear will happen in a given situation will not actually occur, and as a result their anxiety about a previously feared situation reduces naturally.

In conjunction with exposure and response prevention therapy, Castlewood also utilizes other cognitive and behavioral therapies in the treatment of anxiety disorders that allows us to challenge belief systems that maintain fears and ritual behaviors, as well as to provide clients with alternative skills to help them in managing their anxiety.
