Sadly as a woman with endometriosis which has spread to the pelvis and bowel with adhesions there is no way I would be able to differentiate the symptoms of ovarian cancer from my current disease

Another symptom is constipation. my best friend complained of this for almost a year. Eventually she went to the doctor for a checkup and found after some investigation that she had cervical cancer. it was a less aggressive type of cancer that triggered the release of an enzyme that caused constipation.That was really her only symptom.

I also have had endometriosis with adhesions and I found that acupuncture virtually cured it, leaving me pain free and happy again. Western medicine seems to have no cure, but acupuncture has worked for other people I know with endo too, I can not recommend it highly enough.

Sadly, I do not know of a better treatment or diagnosis for ovarian cancer

My mother died of ovarian cancer last November.

All I can say is that if you are unsure, keep going back to your doctor and demand more scans and check ups. She persisted, and after some months doctors found a football-sized tumor in her abdomen! this was removed and she underwent preventative chemotherapy. it came back again about four months after her treatment and this saw a fast decline.

My thoughts are with those who have this sad, agressive disease, or those who are in the scary place where they feel they have symptoms but are unsure of their origin. Sadly, ovarian cancer does not get a lot of publicity. even though it isn’t as common as breast cancer, it surely has a much higher mortality rate.

The more we talk about this disease, the better.

What I also find worrying is that there is no way a woman can go to a doctor and have a routine test, be it an ultra sound or something else to check on the health of her ovaries.Why isnt anyone discussing this?I had, sadly unsuccessful, IVF attempts where I was internally ultra sounded every month or so on the ovaries to check the growth of follicles. Couldn’t the same thing be done for all women on a regular basis to check for lumps etc?can anyone answer this for me please?

i read recently where drs are angered at people checking things on the net..so i do feel guilty saying ‘i read this & it sounds like me..’ with my dr replying im sure lots of people have a few painful spots in their bodies !?? my small pain has been dismissed by the dr & large gyno hospital here but to me its becoming more prominent as a lump ..whats next ..i think of the money i will make sueing these people if it is discovered i actually do have something..how much longer with all the knowledge of the net available to us are we to be treated like naughty children by drs !??

During our reproductive years and beyond, we are advised to have biennial pap smears to detect cervical cancer. After age 50, we are invited to have mammograms and continue our pap smears. also, bowel scan kits will be sent to you at age 50. perhaps it would make good sense that when we go to the doctor for our pap smears from age 40 onwards, we ask our doctors to screen us for ovarian cancer as well. As previous correspondents have pointed out, the vagueness of symptoms matches many other conditions we can suffer from. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing.

Ive been checked now for kidney stones, gall stones, appendicitis, ovarian cancer and now endometriosis. they found endo in my left uretur. now here is my problem. My pain is on my RIGHT side and goes down my right leg. its a dull pulsing pain that has been causing trouble for 2 years now and they say since the endo is on my left it may not be causing the pain on my right. does anyone know of a similar condition that exhibits symptoms like endometriosis? they also say that it could be referred pain but I never feel pain on the area where they found a problem. Im desperate! Im so tired of being in anonymous pain!!!

I have been experiencing pelvic pain, pressure, and cramping in addtion to lower back pain for the past few weeks. it feels similar to the uncomfort I feel during menstruation. I am only 29 years old but seem to be experiencing several of the symptoms listed for this particular cancer. I would appreciate any information you may have on the subject. thanks.

Lower pelvic pain can come from many sources. Ovarian cancer usually does not show symptoms until it has advanced, thus it is known as a silent killer. if you have a family history (mother, sister) of either ovarian or breast cancer, you may want to request having a blood test (CA-125). However, this is also not an end-all test, as the numbers can be elevated if you endometriosis, infection, or other type of cancer.

First and foremost, you need to have a pelvic exam. if there is a growth, they MAY be able to feel it during this exam. if nothing can be determined from the physical exam, they will probably send you for a pelvic ultrasound (you can also request to have one done if your Dr. does not suggest it). During this exam, they will first use the ultrasound on your abdomen with a full bladder. Next, after you empty your bladder, they will use a wand (internally) to view your ovaries & uterus. they use color to see blood flow in your ovaries and anything that may be there. it could be something as simple as a cyst on the ovary. if there is a cyst, depending on the size, it could be a 'wait and see' if it goes away after a cycle. if it does not or is extreamly large, it may be suggested that it be removed.

Also, what side is it on? if it is on the right, they will rule out everything first before jumping to the cancer conclusion. it could be the apendix, gall bladder, or the GI tract. if it is on the left, it could be the pancrease or GI tract.

The only way to KNOW it is cancer, and even endometriosis for that fact, is to surgically look at it and do a biopsy.

Otherwise, symptoms of ovarian cancer are:
Abdominal/pelvic discomfort or pressure
Back or leg pain
Bloating
Changes in bowel function or urinary frequency
Fatigue
Gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g., gas, long-term stomach pain, indigestion)
Malnourished or wasted appearance
Nausea or loss of appetite
Unusual vaginal bleeding

Most of these are due to the growth on the ovary causing the discomfort. Just so you know, a motto most Dr.s go by is "if you hear hooves, look for a horse, not a zebra", in other words, they will look for the common problem, the obvious, not the needle in the hay stack.

Many times, pelvic pain cannot be 'diagnosed', or it could be referred pain, coming from a totally different source, such as your back. There are nerves that run from your spine and wrap around to the front to the top of the inner thigh. if these are damaged or irritated, they can cause pain in the pelvic region.

The most important thing is to be your own advocate, because no one else will. if you don't like an answer, get a second opinion. Until they can tell you what it is or until they can rule everything else out, don't stop trying to get an answer.

I say this because I have just gone through the same thing. Back in may of 06, I started having pelvic pain. I thought it was a re-occuring cyst and just called my Dr. for some pain pills. she told me to come in since I hadn't seen her for this in over 6 months. she sent me for an ultrasound. Well, I had no resolution at that point and it still really hurt (we did find cysts & a gallstone that had to come out). During the course of the next two months, I saw 13 different doctors and had just about every procedure done below the waist. We tried medical management with birth control to help the cysts and finally, on December 30th 2006, I had my right ovary & fallopian tube removed. Good news, no cancer, no endometriosis. it turned out to be a very fiborous cyst producing ovary. Now, a month later, my pain has subsided substantially.

Under my sources, I have included two web sites, one for ovarian cancer and one for endometriosis. make an appointment with your gynocologist, write down ALL of your symptoms and take that list with you to your appointment. Write down any changes your body has shown, even if you don't think it's related. when you write it down and take it with you, it helps make sure you don't forget to tell the Dr. everything.

Good luck! the chances are it's nothing super serious, but make sure you keep those Dr.s working until you are satisfied with the results.

Is there any history of ovarian cancer in your family? Some women have a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation which increases your risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Ovaries are a tricky thing to monitor. your symptoms sound like it could be a variety of things – take a list of questions to your doc, get an ultrasound and report any changes to the doc. Many women with ovarian cancer feel very few symptoms which is why it is often not caught until a later more deadly stage. Listen to your body and be good to yourself. Any docs or women with histories of breast or ovarian cancer with early age onset out there that are not aware of BRCA1 or BRCA2- get educated on this mutation.

Ovarian cancer often shows no obvious signs or symptoms until late in its development. Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may include:

Biopsy is the removal of tissue for examination under a microscope. a pathologist studies the tissue to make a diagnosis. to obtain the tissue, the surgeon performs a laparotomy (an operation to open the abdomen). if cancer is suspected, the surgeon performs an oophorectomy (removal of the entire ovary). This is important because, if cancer is present, removing just a sample of tissue by cutting through the outer layer of the ovary could allow cancer cells to escape and cause the disease to spread.

If the diagnosis is ovarian cancer, the doctor will want to learn the stage (or extent) of disease. Staging is a careful attempt to find out whether the cancer has spread and, if so, to what parts of the body. Staging may involve surgery, x-rays and other imaging procedures, and lab tests. Knowing the stage of the disease helps the doctor plan treatment.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – In some teenage girls, very painful menstrual periods that interfere with daily life may signal an increased risk of developing the most extensive form of endometriosis, a preliminary study suggests.

In a study of 229 women undergoing surgery for endometriosis, French researchers found that those with the most extensive form — known as deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) — were more likely to have had particularly painful periods as teenagers.

As a group, they were four times as likely as women with non-DIE endometriosis to have used birth control pills to treat severe menstrual pain before the age of 18. And they were 70 percent more likely to say they'd missed school days because of menstrual symptoms.

The findings, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, suggest that such problems in adolescence can sometimes predict a later diagnosis of DIE.

In endometriosis, pieces of the tissue that lines the uterus (the endometrium) also grow outside the organ — often on the ovaries, the fallopian tubes or elsewhere in the pelvis. like the endometrium, this misplaced tissue changes with each menstrual cycle, thickening and then breaking down and bleeding.

This leads to a buildup of adhesions, or scar tissue, outside the uterus, with symptoms including pelvic pain and heavy, painful menstrual periods. Some women also have difficulty becoming pregnant.

There are three forms of endometriosis: superficial endometriosis, ovarian endometriomas and DIE, with the latter being the most extensive. Women with DIE usually have adhesions in multiple areas of the pelvis, including the vagina, bladder, bowel and the ligaments attaching the uterus to the pelvis.

Endometriosis can be tricky to diagnose, and many girls and women go years before a diagnosis.

The condition may, for instance, be mistaken for other causes of pelvic pain, like ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease or, depending on the symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome. In addition, while a pelvic exam or ultrasound test are often used to help diagnose endometriosis, the only way to definitively diagnose it is through minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to take a tissue sample.

Compared with the other forms of endometriosis, DIE appears to have a longer delay to diagnosis.

So for the new study, Dr. Charles Chapron and colleagues at Universite Paris Descartes tried to find out whether women undergoing surgery for endometriosis had any early symptom history that was associated with a greater likelihood of having

The study included 229 women who had surgery at a single medical center between 2004 and 2009; 43 percent had DIE, while the rest had the less-extensive forms of endometriosis. all of the women were interviewed about their symptom history; their average age at the time of surgery was 32.

Overall, 58 percent of women with DIE had ever been prescribed birth control pills to treat severe menstrual pain, versus 26 percent of women with non-DIE forms. Similarly, 21 percent of women with DIE had their first prescription before the age of 18, compared with 6 percent of those in the non-DIE group.

When it came to missed school days, 38 percent of DIE patients said they'd had absences due to menstrual symptoms, versus one-quarter of women in the non-DIE group.

Women with DIE were also more likely to report a family history of endometriosis; 13 percent did, compared with just under 5 percent of women with non-DIE endometriosis.

The study has a number of limitations, including the fact that it surveyed women at one time point and asked them to recall symptoms from adolescence. a study that followed young women over time to see whether symptoms predicted a later diagnosis of DIE would be more informative.

These findings now set the groundwork for such a long-term study, Chapron told Reuters Health in an email.

but the "crux of the issue," he noted, is whether diagnosing endometriosis earlier will eventually lead to fewer cases of DIE and less need for surgery.

"Today, there is no effective way to prevent the progression of endometriosis to its most severe stage, DIE," Chapron said.

And the current results, he noted, suggest that treating severe menstrual pain with birth control pills does not prevent progression to DIE, as a history of such treatment was linked to the condition. Chapron also pointed out, however, that this does not mean that birth control pills contributed to the development of DIE either.

Still, even though it is not clear whether progression to DIE can be prevented, an earlier diagnosis of endometriosis would at least allow girls and women to know the cause of their symptoms.

according to Chapron and his colleagues, girls and women with severe menstrual pain that does not respond to pain relievers like ibuprofen should see their doctors, and, if appropriate, be evaluated for endometriosis.

Besides painkillers and birth control pills, non-surgical treatments for endometriosis include several types of hormonal medications that inhibit the growth of the endometrial tissue.
