Signs and symptoms that someone’s liver is growing enlarged generally indicate that there is inflammation and swelling in the liver resulting from one of a number of potential developing liver disorders. A patient with enlarged liver symptoms should seek medical treatment as soon as possible. often, by the time enlarged liver symptoms are diagnosed, consequential liver damage has in all probability already occurred. If the problem is not slowed, it may in the long run lead to liver failure. Once liver failure has occurred, the only way to keep the patient alive is by means of a liver transplant.

The medical name for an enlarged liver is hepatomegaly.

An enlarged liver is not regarded as a disease. but it is definitely a sign that there is liver trouble of some sort.

There are no early indications of liver enlargement. but if the underlying disorder is not diagnosed and treated, the liver will ultimately enlarge so much that the following indications will begin to present themselves.

* pain in the abdomen and stomach area

* a feeling of bloating in the stomach or abdominal areas

* abdominal fluid accumulation (a problem called ascites)

* A lack of interest in food and a lack of desire for food

*Painful joints and muscles

* a cough that’s not due to a respiratory ailment

* irregular bowel habits that include bouts of diarrhea or constipation

* weariness and weakness

* vomiting, fever and queasiness

* Urine is sometimes murky or dark

Patients with indications of liver enlargement often have an unusually strong sensitivity to light that is called photophobia. the individual’s sense of smell may well also be heightened, and certain odors may well become offensive.

Jaundice is one of the rare identifiable symptoms of a liver disorder. when you have jaundice, your skin and the whites of your eyes appear yellow. Jaundice results from the accumulation of a bile pigment known as bilirubin.. Abnormal amounts of bilirubin destroy liver tissue, which in turn causes indications of liver enlargement.

There are numerous other ailments which indicate that some form of liver disease or damage has started. One is cholestasis, which happens when the flow of bile from the liver has been blocked. another example is portal hypertension, which is unusually high blood pressure in the portal vein. This blood vessel transports blood from the intestines to the liver.

The physician will want to get the results of diagnostic tests to ascertain how far liver enlargement has progressed. the tests usually include a liver biopsy, liver function tests, an ultrasound or a CT scan.

Every so often both the liver and spleen become enlarged together. when this is the case, the disorder is called hepatosplenomegaly.
