Drug maker Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:VRTX) said Monday Health Canada has approved Incivek tablets for patients with chronic hepatitis C.

The drug, also known as telaprevir, is approved for use in combination with pegylated-interferon and ribavirin, two standard treatments used for Hep-C. Specifically, the drug can be used in patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C, with compensated liver disease, meaning there is some damage to the liver, but the liver still functions.

About 170 million people worldwide are chronically infected with Hep-C, including some 250,000 Canadians. the serious liver disease can lead to liver damage, scarring, failure, or liver cancer.

The approval was based on three phase 3 studies of the drug of mroe than 2,500 people with hepatitis C. the results showed that people who took Incivek in combination with the other treatments achieved significantly higher rates of viral cure, compared to those that were treated with standard therapy alone.

The drug is indicated for people that are new to treatment, or did not respond to prior therapy.

“Health Canada’s rapid approval of Incivek underscores the urgent need for new medicines to treat hepatitis C,” said senior vice president and chief medical officer of Vertex, Robert Kauffman.

The company said that until recently, about 40% of people who underwent a year of treatment for Hep-C were cured.

“Incivek’s ability to nearly double that rate of cure and cut treatment time in half for the majority of patients being treated for the first time marks a turning point in the fight against this disease.”

Patients can live with the Hep C virus for many years without detecting any symptoms, leading for calls by some for increased hepatitis testing.

In 2010, the annual cost of hep-C due to medical treatment and lost productivity in Canada was estimated at $1 billion.

Vertex develops and commercializes small molecule drugs for the treatment of diseases. it is engaged in phase-one clinical trials for a host of drug candidates, which include drugs for the treatment for cystic fibrosis and influenza.

Movement and routine are basically self taught and self managed such as how they prefer to stand or certain types of movement. regardless of what the routine is, if you try to force a change they will become disturbed. taking into consideration how change affects the autistic person is an important factor in treating this condition.

There are more symptoms that are considered common in autism, and that are seen frequently in the very young child. the range of symptoms is different from one person to the next, and that is why any treatment for this condition must be constructed based on that person’s particular symptoms and situation. Autism research has been an ongoing concern for many years, and obviously more needs to be done so the disease can be unraveled and understood.

Autistic children often display symptoms such as extreme attachments to objects, repetitive movements or rituals that don’t make sense to others. for example, an autistic child may become fixated on an object such as a pencil, a rock or a shoe, staring at it for hours. or they may develop their own personal rituals, such as walking around in a circle or moving their hands around in a certain way. In some cases, this kind of behavior can be dangerous or self destructive, as some autistic children will bang their heads against a wall. for this reason, some people with autism are given medication to control their behavior or restrained to prevent them from harming themselves or others. This, however, only applies to people with severe symptoms of autism.

They can show symptoms as soon as they are born. Some are born with meconium ileus due to the thick sticky mucus and they are diagnosed straight away

Bloated stomachs and foul smelling nappies can also happen in babies.

it depends how severe the case of cystic fibrosis is.. if it is a severe case symptoms can appear as a baby but if it is a mild case they could appear in early childhood.

I like to read and I don't have problems speaking or anything like that it's just that I always get my letters mixed up when reading and I read the words as another word. Is this a symptom of dyslexia?

Dyslexia is generally diagnosed based on a failure to achieve up to potential in certain academic areas (primarily reading, writing, and spelling) despite adequate instruction. What that basically means is that a child of average or above average intelligence is preforming significantly below where he should be based on his ability and classroom setting only in certain areas.

Dyslexia, like most other learning disabilities, is diagnosed based on a deficit in certain areas relative to overall ability, and doesn't necessarily require that any skills be even below average. That means that a kid who's about average in certain areas that are effected by dyslexia might still be diagnosed as dyslexic if his overall IQ is significantly higher than average.

Not sure if that helps, but I guess the point that I was trying to make is that it's about a deficit in skills relative to what you should be able to do if you weren't dyslexic, rather than relative to the general population of people your age (which is how standardized assessments are scored).

Lord Walton of Detchant calls for clarity in determining how multiple sclerosis care will be commissioned, following proposed restructures to the health service.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system involving the brain, spinal cord and sometimes the optic nerves. it is the commonest neurological disease affecting adults, involving approximately two million people worldwide and about 100,000 people in the UK.

Symptoms vary in severity; sometimes the disease is progressive but more often it is a relapsing and remitting disorder, in that episodes of weakness, numbness or visual failure occur but then recover wholly or in part, only for further such events to occur at a later date, often resulting ultimately in progressive disability.

Since the introduction of interferons in treatment some 20 years ago, these drugs and many more discovered since have been shown to be effective in reducing the severity of symptoms, in promoting remission and in delaying progression of the disease, particularly in the relapsing and remitting variety of the condition. These are so-called ‘disease-modifying drugs’.

Unfortunately, recent evidence shows that only about 12 per cent of patients with multiple sclerosis in the UK are currently receiving these remedies, and a report published by the department of health on medicines’ usage ranked the UK 13 out of 14 comparative countries with regard to MS drugs.

This finding is not consistent with the ten-year national service framework launched by the government in 2005 relating to the treatment of long-term conditions, and it is clear that substantial improvement in the availability of these drugs is needed.

The department of health introduced a risk-sharing scheme, enabling manufacturers of these drugs to share the cost of providing them while research was undertaken over a period of ten years to ascertain their long-term cost-effectiveness. it is unclear how future MS services will be commissioned, as between the new National Health Commissioning Board and local GP consortia, and this also needs to be clarified.

my uncle is 96 years old. other than being elderly, he has no clear medical diagnosis except complete exhaustion. he sleeps all the time, although when he's awake, he's totally cognizant and fully functioning. someone suggested he just has "failure to thrive" but i think there may be something medically wrong.

Have the Drs. treated him for depression? Failure to thrive can be equated with giving up. Loss of quality l life can trigger this and also bring on depression. I don't know nor have I seen your uncle but these are possibilities.

When dealing with anxiety attacks, it has been found that more often than not, medication can help alleviate the symptoms. many people, perhaps millions deal with anxiety on a daily basis and the fears that go along with it. This type of anxiety is different from regular anxiety that we all occasionally experience over stressful events in our lives.  It can become an overwhelming issue and it’s the kind that can’t be controlled without the help of medication.

This type of anxiety needs medication treatment because it is long lasting and continually returns, no matter what you do to try and stop it. Without the correct treatment, this kind of anxiety will only continue to get worse over time.

It is unfortunate, but some people deal with those who suffer from anxiety as if it is a behavioral problem. They may say things like, get yourself together and other similar statements that only make the person feel like a failure. They may have tried many times to get it together but can’t. Anxiety can’t be wished or explained away.

When you are in the middle of an anxiety attack, the use of medication can treat the underlying cause of the anxiety. The reason anxiety isn’t something you can simply shake off is that it can have physiological or psychological roots. The possibility also exists that it can be health problems that are the cause of the anxiety. some prescribed medications can also have side effects that produce anxiety.

If you are constantly worried or anxious about these emotions, it is possible that you may have reached the point where you find you’re unable to let them go. You’re constantly dwelling on them over and over again in your mind.

Anxiety can be triggered by thinking about the worst case scenarios, thinking about the ‘what if’ situations that never happen. There are different elements to anxiety. There are also different diagnosis results from one level to the next. If you find yourself unable to relax and escape the fears and stress in your mind, you need to get help. Medication can help manage the anxiety you feel.

If you live with a deep anxiety it means that you take ordinary fears and just magnify them. for example, lets say a loved one is late getting home. You may automatically assume something very bad has happened to them. your thoughts tend to gravitate to think of the worst possible outcome in any given event.

If you are not able to prevent yourself from having an anxiety attack, you can still have peace of mind. Medication can make the attacks only a part of your life and not the focus of your life. Medication can allow you to get back to enjoying your life again.

The Public Services Ombudsman for Wales has recommended that a GP should pay a man £3000 for failing to refer his mother to a specialist for suspected cancer, from which she later died.

The sum is in recognition of the additional suffering the man – referrred to as mr K – endured due to the uncertainty about what outcome may have resulted from an appropriate and prompt referral.

The complaint was against Dr R.D. Bohra and related to failure to refer a patient appropriately.

The Ombudsman says that mr K complained about treatment that his mother, mrs K, received from her GP, Dr Bohra (“the GP”).

Mr K said that the GP failed to diagnose or refer mrs K appropriately when she presented symptoms to him. mrs K was later diagnosed with renal cancer in hospital and sadly died. mr K maintained that an urgent referral from the GP may have prevented her death.

The Ombudsman found that the GP should have referred mrs K urgently after one particular consultation. during that visit mrs K told the GP that she had passed blood in her urine and had pain in her abdomen.

The Ombudsman found that the GP should have referred mrs K to a specialist for suspected cancer. Clinical guidelines indicate that blood in the urine should lead to such a referral under what is known as “the two week rule”. This means that a patient is seen by a relevant specialist within the two weeks. By not doing so in this case, the GP made a significant error.

The Ombudsman concluded that mrs K would have had a much better chance of survival if the GP had made the referral.
