Anxiety and racing thoughts concerning the call prove to her that she messed this conversation up also, just like she always does. sometimes she gets embarrassed just thinking about the call.the above situation is just a glimpse into one of the many situations that can trigger social anxiety and its effect on a person. many people experience feelings like these when they interact with others, leading them to avoid social interaction. Social anxiety affects approximately 15 million people in the United States. it is equally common among men and women, and typically begins in adolescents. Physical symptoms such as: confusion, pounding heart, sweating, shaking, blushing, muscle tension, and upset stomach may also be present. People with social anxiety are often mistakenly perceived as being shy, uninterested, nervous, and unfriendly. in fact, they want to be friendly and open but feel too anxious to act on that desire.A person’s friendships are not the only relationships impacted by social anxiety.
Let’s face it, there are some things in life that are just plain hard to share and talk about, even to close friends, family and coworkers.

due to feelings of embarrassment and shame, chronic diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis go unacknowledged and continue to negatively affect millions of lives.

these diseases, also known as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), can harm one’s ability to lead a normal life both socially and physically.

Jo Bloom, an IBD support group facilitator in Las Cruces since 2006, said she has seen people of all different ages and backgrounds feel “isolated and alone” from being unaware of what is happening or what to do.

“People just want to be able to talk about it, share horror stories and share the small victories,” Bloom said.

There is no known cause or cure of these chronic intestinal disorders, but it is manageable and treatable on an individual basis.

in addition to discussing the everyday dealings with IBD, Bloom said the support group members discuss doctors and treatments that have worked for them, and may be helpful to others.

“The first thing I would tell someone who has IBD is to keep a food chart,” Bloom said. “Eating the right foods won’t make it go away, but eating the wrong foodscan make it worse.”

The most common symptoms people with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis suffer from are frequent and uncontrollable bowel movements as well as excruciating intestinal pain.

According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), IBD is a biological disorder, which is not caused by emotions such as anxiety and stress, although these factors may worsen symptoms.

Las Cruces resident Carmella Myers was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2001, and started attending the support groups, where she said she was more optimistic than most.

“I just see so many other things like cancer and lung disease that can kill people,” Myers said. “as far as I know, I’m not going to die from this, because it is treatable.”

unfortunately, Myers said, it is younger people who don’t deal with the issue well and need the most help and support.

“Parents will come with their children to seek help, and it’s really comforting for them to be open and frank about what is happening,” Myers said.

According to Bloom, finding the right doctor to create an appropriate treatment plan is just as important as telling the people in your life what is happening.

“unfortunately, it can be a very expensive disease because you can’t just go (to the doctor) once and find your magic cure,” Bloom said. “everyone is different.”

the ulcerative colitis andCrohn’s disease support group meets from 3 to 5 p.m. the second Sunday of each month in the Community Education room ofMountainView Regional Medical Center.

As I mentioned previously, it can be difficult to accurately determine if you are overtrained without a lab coat and fancy equipment. However, here are some clues you can use to help you determine if you’re recovering properly.

Heart Rate

During overtraining, you may have a higher than normal heart rate while resting and while sleeping. Record your heart rate each morning as soon as you wake up and before you get out of bed. keep a small notebook by your night stand where you can record the data each day. if you find an extended period of time where your heart rate increases in the morning, you could be suffering the effects of overtraining.

Caveat: Heart rate can be affected my numerous factors outside running fitness or your training state. Stress, hydration, caffeine and hours of sleep are just some of the variables than can effect heart rate. Don’t get too worried about small fluctuations, instead look for ongoing trends.

Moodiness

Overtraining can lead to a decrease in hormone production, specifically the hormone catecholamine, which can influence the sympathetic nervous system. This can lead to increased feelings of stress and moodiness. if you’re feeling increasingly irritable or stressed, it might be a sign that you’re training too hard.

Susceptibility To Sickness

Overtraining impairs the immune system, which leaves you more susceptible to contracting colds, the flu, and other viruses. if you find yourself getting sick more than usual, especially repeated bouts of the same virus, it could be a sign of overtraining.

Disturbed Sleeping Patterns

Finally, overtraining interferes with the bodies circadian rhythms, which can cause you to have trouble sleeping. Symptoms include waking up much earlier than normal or trouble getting or staying asleep.

Caveat – circadian rhythms are also effected by seasonal changes in the amount of daylight available. if you’re having trouble sleeping during a change in seasons, it could be a natural reaction to when the sun rises and sets.

While non of these symptoms should be taken as a clear indication of overtraining on their own, if you find that you’re experiencing three to four of these indicators, it could be time to take a little rest.

My emotions tend to run from I Want a Nap -> Where’s my People Magazine? -> I Want a Cheeseburger, so it’s safe to assume that I’m as deep as a mud puddle. When I have these things that normal people call “feelings,” I’m at a loss. I can barely identify them, let alone fix them.

I got pregnant with my middle son after months and months of trying and I finally had it all. a baby on the way. a house in the suburbs. a loving husband. I even had a dog.

I was Living La Vida Aunt Becky. it was all that I’d ever wanted and more.

So why was I so miserable that I could barely slog out of bed every day? Prepartum Depression.

I’d always suffered from a touch of situational depression, but my life kinda read like a bad country song, it wasn’t that surprising. Months of being unable to conceive, a threatened miscarriage, and a job that I hated had taken a toll on me.

Finally pregnant, I’d expected to glow and radiate and maybe sit in a field of sunflowers wearing a big floppy hat.

When I found that I could barely leave the house, I was vexed. When I could no longer talk to my friends — or anyone — on the phone without bursting into tears or having an anxiety attack, I was perplexed. I’d never so much as had a single panic attack. While I’d often listed “napping” and “eating” as two things I excelled at, I could no longer do either. I was as confused as I was nauseated.

These were the months before I had a blog to confess this to, so I kept my trap shut. No one knew how utterly miserable I was.

I mean, I was creating a new life inside of me! What’s more magical than that? And how could I possibly be a good mother if my only “glow” I radiated was from barfing?

Thanks to Andrea Yates, the world knows about postpartum mood disorders. I got a slew of packets about the signs, symptoms, and what to expect if I ever felt like killing my offspring after my first son was born. We studied postpartum depression in nursing school, too. But depression while pregnant? Antenatal depression? well, that wasn’t covered.

After my son was born healthy and pissed off at the world, it was like a veil lifted and the clouds gave way to the sun. I felt like myself again. I could take on the world.

It was then that I finally got a name for what had happened to me (and it didn’t involve the words “bad mother”): antepartum depression.

It clicked into place: I wasn’t a bad mother. I wasn’t a bad wife. I wasn’t a bad friend. I was simply suffering from depression. While pregnant.

When I got pregnant with my daughter, I fully expected the depression to come back, and it did, but this time I knew what it was. I knew that it would pass. I knew that it wasn’t my fault. Turns out, knowledge IS power.

And that’s why I speak out about it. It’s important to give these dark things a name. To bring them to light and tell the world about it in the hopes that someone, somewhere will read this and know that they are not alone. that being depressed and pregnant happens to some of us.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it is beautiful.

Have any of you suffered from prepartum or postpartum mood disorders? how did you manage it?

However, recent research by British scientists at the University of Exeter shows that a brisk 15-minute bit of exercise can halt that craving …
