Heavy use of the veterinary anesthetic turned club drug could have serious consequences. 

People who use the club drug Special K or Vitamin K (ketamine) might be at higher risk for serious bladder problems in the future. In most cases, the symptoms go away after the drug is stopped, but not always.

Ketamine also leads to problems with thinking, memory, and concentration.

Ketamine, which is used as an anesthetic in veterinary medicine, gives its users hallucinations, an “out of body” feeling, and feelings of euphoria or a dream-like state. It is swallowed, injected, or snorted. Ketamine also leads to problems with thinking, memory, and concentration.

A new study followed over 1,200 people who had used ketamine in the last year. Of the users, 17 percent were addicted to it, and 26 percent of users had experienced urinary problems, including pain in the lower abdomen, burning or stinging during urination, bloody urine, and incontinence (urine leakage).

The severity of urinary symptoms was connected to how often and the size of the dose of ketamine the participants used.

Half the participants reported that their symptoms improved after they stopped using the drug. a small minority (4%) said they continued to have symptoms after they ceased use.

Ketamine is known to cause irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes, as well as thickening of the bladder wall and kidney problems. but the exact mechanisms by which ketamine actually causes these changes in the urinary tract are not well understood.

A new international study has made a discovery that may reshape the way  schizophrenia is treated.

Some two dozen researchers from University of California San Diego School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin and elsewhere have identified a gene mutation strongly linked to schizophrenia that may be an important new target for the development of drug therapies.

Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe and disabling brain disorder, with symptoms that include hallucinations, delusions and thought disorders. It is believed to be caused by environmental and genetic factors, especially the latter: the illness occurs in 1 percent of the general population, but in 10 percent of people who have a first-degree relative with the disorder, such as a parent or sibling.

Current therapies are only partially effective with little progress being made in identifying effective new treatments over several decades.

In the last three years, researchers have discovered that rare mutations at many locations in the human genome resulted in significantly higher risk of schizophrenia.

These mutations consisted of copy number variants or CNVs ?a type of genetic variation in which the number of copies of a gene differs between individuals. The findings were the first conclusive evidence that rare mutations can cause schizophrenia, but this did not identify the specific genes involved.

In the current study, researchers scanned for CNVs in the genomes of 8,290 individuals with diagnosed cases of schizophrenia and 7,431 healthy controls.

The study confirmed CNVs identified in earlier studies, but uncovered an important new finding: duplications at the tip of chromosome 7q were detected in individuals with schizophrenia at a rate 14 times higher than in healthy individuals. these duplications impact a gene coding for the brain receptor VIPR2.

Formally known as the Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide Receptor 2, VIPR2 is expressed in the nervous system, including in the brain, blood vessels and gastrointestinal tract.

Previous studies have shown that VIPR2 helps to regulate the formation and activity of neurons in the brain. In mice, VIPR2 also has been found to play important roles in behavioral processes, including learning and timing of daily activity. The study next measured expression of the VIPR2 gene in blood cells from patients, they found that individuals with mutations had greater expression of VIPR2 and greater activity of the receptor.

“This suggests that the mutations increase signaling in the Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide pathway,” according to co-author Dr. Aiden Corvin.

“We know that this activity can be modulated by synthetic peptides (compounds where amino acids are linked together) and the next step is to see if these compounds have a therapeutic effect in mice or in cultured human cells that carry the VIPR2 gene mutation.”

The findings are published in the online issue of the journal Nature.

Malignancy

Malignant conditions like Prostate cancer, Pancreatic cancer, Leukemia and Lymphoma can also lead to this condition.

Chest Disorders

In some cases, chest diseases like tuberculosis and Pneumonia can be causes of SIADH.

Brain Diseases

Brain disorders like Meningitis are another reason behind the appearance of SIADH syndrome in many patients. Head injuries and brain tumors are other possible causes.

Mental Disorders

Major mental diseases like Psychosis are often held responsible for the showing up of this disease.

Encephalitis

This condition is characterized by an inflammation of the brain. It is caused by lead poisoning or the bite of an infected mosquito.

But while Hyponatremia is seen mostly in patients with neurosurgery, SIADH occur in patients with a number of other medical conditions like head trauma, memingitis, asthma and more.

Doctors normally diagnose this syndrome by taking blood and urine samples and checking them for any abnormality in sodium levels. If a tumor or infection is suspected, additional SIADH tests like kidney biopsies, imaging scans and some more blood examinations have to be carried out. If the condition is serious as in case of an organ failure, the person may need dialysis or oxygen therapy while diagnostic tests are being carried out. Intravenous fluids also need to be given to such people.

San Diego, California – in a major advance for schizophrenia research, an international team of scientists, led by Jonathan Sebat, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry and cellular and molecular medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, has identified a gene mutation strongly linked to the brain disorder - and a signaling pathway that may be treatable with existing compounds.

The work poses significant and immediate implications for neurobiology and the treatment of schizophrenia because the gene identified by the researchers is an especially attractive target for drug development.

“in some ways, this is the kind of gene that the pharmaceutical industry has been waiting for,” said Sebat, who is also chief of the Beyster Center for Molecular Genomics of Neuropsychiatric Diseases and a member of the Institute for Genomic Medicine, both at UC San Diego. “its activity can be modulated by synthetic peptides; and some have already been created.”

Sebat said the next step will be to test whether compounds like these have beneficial effects in mice and in cultured human cells that carry the VIPR2 gene mutation.

I was diagnosed more than ten years ago with disorganized type schizophrenia.

I had many sleepless nights because of tinnitus-like ear problems and stress. I also had bouts of mania and depression. I had delusions, and I had a hard time communicating with other people. I was very shy and rarely spoke up, especially outside of the home. I am an artist, and tended to collect things that were related to my latest art projects. I also had aural hallucinations, and often misheard people.

Severe nausea and very high fever accompanied by light headedness and hallucinations.

“Take two aspirin and call me in the morning.”  For schizophrenia?  perhaps.  New research suggests that aspirin may be of benefit in reducing the symptoms of schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a serious psychological disorder characterized by impairments in thinking that can lead to delusions, difficulty in determining reality, and hallucinations.  Sufferers are at high risk for substance abuse and suicide.  up to 2.2 million Americans suffer from the disease. 

There is no single known cause for schizophrenia, but chemical and structural abnormalities of the brain as well as genetics appear to play a role.  Treatments include antipsychotics and psychosocial therapy.

Prior research noted an improvement of symptoms in schizophrenia when patients were taking anti-inflammatories such as celexicob, a cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor.  these results suggest that inflammation may play a role in causing some of the symptoms of schizophrenia.

Dr. Laan Grobbee and his team of researchers in the Netherlands evaluated whether using a medication to treat inflammation might improve the symptoms of schizophrenia.  They used aspirin as an anti-inflammatory because cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors are known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Grobbee conducted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study with 80 patients who had had schizophrenia for fewer than five years.  Patients were randomly assigned to either 1000mg of aspirin or placebo, and treated for three months.

Patients who required antipsychotic medications (70 percent) continued to be treated with olanzapine, clozapine, or risperidone.  All patients were given a proton-pump inhibitor as a precaution to protect them from any possible stomach irritation due to the aspirin.

The Posititive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to measure the change in symptoms at the beginning of the treatment and after three months.

After three months, the patients treated with aspirin showed a significant reduction in the PANSS (4.86 points) compared to the patients treated with placebo (1.57 points). 

Cognitive function was also assessed, and there did not appear to be any negative effects from the aspirin.

These results suggest that there may indeed be an inflammatory component of schizophrenia that could perhaps be responsive to anti-inflammatory agents such as aspirin.  Grobbee noted an even greater improvement in patients with altered immune function.

The authors suggest that aspirin may also theoretically work in treatment of schizophrenia through other mechanisms such as the N-methyl d-aspartate receptor, another active area of research.

Given recent research showing schizophrenics at increased risk for cardiovascular disease and other high-risk metabolic conditions such as defects in insulin function, aspirin may be of benefit in more than one way.

It is unclear if aspirin therapy would be effective in someone suffering from the disease for many years.  perhaps after a long period of untreated inflammation, aspirin would be of little effect.

Future research in this area could include larger trials to determine how many patients might be responsive to therapy, studies to determine what other (if any) anti-inflammatory agents might be of benefit, and research to determine whether therapy might be helpful in patients with a long term diagnosis.

Who will suffer from anxiety symptoms and what causes them?

Anxiety disorders cause these (anxiety symptoms). The subconscious brain has a small organ called the Amygdala and disorders are caused when this organ reacts differently and it is known as an ‘anxiety switch’.

For a treatment to be successful you need to focus, not on the symptoms experienced, but on the Amygdala malfunction which is the root cause.

When they suffer anxiety symptoms the majority of folk are able to explain to themselves why it has happened. a wide range of strong and weird feelings and reactions can be triggered by an increase in adrenaline levels in the blood.

Other folk are unable to find a reason for suffering anxiety symptoms they experience on an irregular basis.

Well the answer is no! The anxiety condition you suffer can be treated successfully in a short space of time. Now that is great news if you want to carry on with your life as you wish it was.

Anxiety symptoms are caused by your anxiety condition which, no matter how severe, can be quickly and permanently treated. This will allow you to continue your life without anxiety, free from the anxiety symptoms that make your life so difficult.
