Hello,

It's been more than a month now that I've been having a running nose and a strong cough. These past few days, I've been feeling tired and weak. My ears are also blocked and sometimes have a hard time hearing. What do you guys think about these symptoms? Someone told me it might be chronic cough but not too sure.. anyone have any ideas on what it might be. Thanks

P.S. I have no allergies.

Viruses(common cold) and bacterial infections cause the same symptoms. on the cellular level its all the same. There's something interfering with the cell's regulatory processes.

If you have a cold then you need to support your immune system with vitamin C. the cold will leave your body within 2-3 weeks.

If you still feel sick after 2-3 weeks, ask for an antibiotic. Take the whole course.

If you still feel sick after taking the full course of antibiotic, you may want to look into getting tested for infectious mononucleosis, std's, etc.

You may have developed sinusitis or an ear infection which would explain the tiredness and weakness. the cough can be cause by mucus draining down the back of the throat and irritating the lining of your bronchi. Go to your doc if you are still not better by tomorrow. He may prescribe an antibiotic to combat the infection. better safe than sorry.

It could be bronchitis.. have it checked.. I have your same symptoms but have not been to the docs yet… trying to wait it out….I know eventually it will go away on its own and I really don't want to take any antibiotics for it…

(Go to the doctor and ask him.) I think you are having a longlasting cold

in california, do you believe it is possible for a heroin addict to get medical marijuana for the pain of withdrawal symptoms from kicking and getting completely off of heroin. Lets just say, they already are on methadone but are having are hard time detoxing. (please – no stupid answers)

I've known a few heroin addicts. most who didn't die from the habit have managed to kick it using marijuana to help. not sure about getting a recommendation for that purpose, but I do know it helps. If at all possible, kick heroin and pass on the methadone. its way harder to get off!! If already on methadone, best bet is rehab as the detox for that drug is awful, but worth it to get clean.

I can see the logic behind it – I know Mary-Jane is not as hard as heroin- so I would see it as an improvement. I know it sounds dumb but it makes sense to me.
then the person can gradually reduce the use of marijuana until they are completely drug free- Marijuana is not as difficult to quit as heroin.

I have asthma but my fam really can't afford to go to the doctor for it. I had a pretty bad attack the other day and it got me concerned. What could I do to strengthen my lungs and prevent more painful attacks? I've heard singing lessons actually help in some cases… I also heard to do aerobic exercises.

If anyone can find it it would be much appreciated. I HATE having this problem

Definitely work on cardio conditioning. usually helps strengthen the lungs too. Walking, jogging, etc. unfortunately, there is no guarantee that these things will fix the asthma, as the physiology of the attack is unrelated to fitness. (Believe me, I've tried my whole life to be "fit" enough to not have asthma…to no avail). there are some other things I do when I'm having a particularly hard time with my asthma.

1. Sleep with a humidifier. Moist air is much easier on the lungs than cold/dry.
2. Use Vicks on your chest at night if you feel tightness. I'm not sure if it actually does anything but I seem to feel better at least.
3. Sleep on a couple of pillows. Lying flat makes breathing much harder.
4. During an episode, try to breath in through your nose and out with your mouth.

whats are some symptoms of autism?

the severity of the symptoms vary.
but here are some:
failure to establish friendships with children the same age,
lack of interest in sharing enjoyment, interests, or achievements with other people,
lack of empathy,
problems taking steps to start a conversation,
having a hard time learning the language,
frequent crying,
no real fear of dangers.

i hope those help you!

I think that one of the most frustrating things about autism or Asperger's syndrome is trying to relate to your child. Kids don't come with a manual that tells you what their limitations are; you find that out as you go along. so many times they are reacting to something they perceive as scary, uncomfortable or annoying. they are not able, being young children, to discuss the problem with you; they just react. they may scream, shut down, start spinning. . . you just never know what the problem is until you have figured out the pattern to the child's behavior. And, at times, once they have started into the reaction mode, it's difficult to get them out of it, even if the offensive stimuli is removed. I have found with my grandson, that as he's gotten older he can reason and take on more responsibility for his own behavior. But when he was little it was hard to relate to him.

You're having a hard time fighting off the cold BECAUSE you take an immunosuppressant! Do some online research about the drugs you take.

Diabetes can affect an individual from head to toe. Perhaps itsmost noticeable consequence is on the peripheral nervous system. These are the nerve fibers that lie under the skin, outside of thespinal cord.

Nerves are like wires, which allow the brain to communicate withthe body. they are involved in most body functions, such asproviding sensation, controlling muscles, and regulating skintemperature and perspiration.

About 40 percent of diabetics will experience symptoms involvingthe nerves in the arms and legs, often referred to as diabeticperipheral neuropathy, or DPN. These symptoms can be especiallynoticeable in the foot, because the foot contains the longestnerves in the body.

Diabetics often complain that their skin does not feel normal, and they describe a sense of tightness or the skin feeling likeleather. Patients have a hard time describing the symptoms, butthey often say it’s like walking on marbles or gravel. Manydiabetics are unable to wiggle or fan their toes.

These symptoms tend to be annoying but usually require notreatment. But the sensations may worsen, and the patient oftenwill develop sharp pains, burning and a “pins and needles” feeling, often worsening in the evenings and disrupting sleep.

Perhaps the most serious consequence of DPN is numbness in thefoot. Diabetics who have loss of protective sensation (LOPS) are athigh risk of developing ulcers, or sores in the skin frompressure.

Pressure from shoes or the ground may actually rub a hole in theskin that the patient is unaware of. These ulcers often becomeinfected and lead to about 85 percent of all amputations in thelower extremities.

There is no cure for diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Tightcontrol of blood sugar will reduce symptoms, but it is not aguarantee of success.

Multiple medications are available for diabetic neuropathy. These medications are designed to control the painful symptoms ofneuropathy. they do not cure the condition and do not reverse lossof feeling.

The B vitamins, vitamin D and a nutritional supplement calledalpha lipoic acid have been shown to be beneficial for somepatients. Other therapies such as nerve stimulation, infrared lighttherapy and surgical nerve decompression appear to be of limited orno value.

As loss of protective sensation is very serious, all diabeticsneed to be aware of their sensory status. this can be easilydetected using a soft piece of plastic called a monofilament thatis pressed against the foot. a diabetic who cannot feel thisplastic on the bottom of his or her foot is considered to haveLOPS.

Although sensation cannot be increased, the foot can beprotected to prevent diabetic sores from forming. Proper careincludes moisturizing the skin to keep it supple, wearing diabeticshoes (usually paid for by insurance companies), conducting dailyinspections of the foot and scheduling regular visits to apodiatrist.

Dr. Jeffrey Boberg is a podiatrist on staff at SSM DePaul HealthCenter. His offices are located at 12255 DePaul Drive, Suite 100,in the North Medical Office Building. you can reach him at314-739-7100.
