is it possible to have a cold or sinus probs with no congestion?

my right ear hurts, my throut is a little sore, my head is a litte sore, behind my eyes are uncomfortable, i feel quite achy around neck etc, im getting flushes (fever) and i feel like poo…but i dont have any congestion, my nose is dry… my dad has a cold he caught sunday his symptoms started and i stayed with him all last week so maybe ive picked something? but i dont have congestion or anything its weird it feels like i have something but i dont know what… thanks for any advice

when I get these symptoms, it's my TMJ acting up. That's a condition of the jaw joint, and can cause hearing loss, headaches, sinus pain, tooth and jaw ache and all the problems you're describing, including swollen glands. You can research TMJ on the web, you will learn alot and be surprised at all the complications.

For painful headaches and sinus pain especially, you need to attack the pain at the source. try a saline nasal RINSE (not a spray.) a full warm water saline rinse goes in one nostril and out the other. it soothes with warmth, it draws out the entire gunk and shrinks the tissue (like swimming in the ocean, but without the eye stinging).

Buffered salt doesn't 'sting' as much as plain salt water. You can use a new method like Nasopure, or the vintage, Netipot

You can do this as often as you like with no side effects.

You don’t need a prescription for this therapy. If you live in a state like mine, they’ve pretty much “outlawed” sudafed medicine. Drug-free is really the way to go on a frequent-use basis

I spent the last month fighting this same thing. I felt the pressure and just felt crappy but there wasn't any blowing of my nose and there was a strain to talk and more. the worst part is that everything but water had a terrible rotten taste to it for at least 2 weeks. I ended up getting the full blown flu after a bit and that consisted of 104 temperature and alot of sleeping. the only thing that made feel better was cough syrup (lots of it) with a mix of Tylenol, IB profen and Excedrin migraine. I know it sounds like to much medicine but I was desperate. Good luck and I'm sorry that some else has to live thru all the crap too.

I work at a daycare center/private preschool and a lot of our students have behavioral problems. There is a boy who is not directly in my classroom that has a lot of health problems. He is allergic to a lot of things including wheat and dairy products. Besides his allergies, he has a lot of problems when it comes to social behavior. a lot of the staff has been pushing his mother into believing he has autism; however, he does not have a lot of the symptoms for it. He doesn't stim objects, he makes eye contact when you call his name and when he runs out of the room (like a lot of my children do) he'll only run about two feet from the door and waits for someone to notice him.

I have worked with a lot autistic children in the past and I am not an expert or anything, but he doesn't follow any of the classic symptoms. The only thing that he does do is hum a lot. He hums when he's playing by himself or with other children.

Could he possibly have a hearing problem?

This is not medical advice. 1 in 9 children who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD have an undiagnosed or untreated hearing loss. in addition, autism can be associated with hearing loss. I know of multiple cases that have gone both ways (i.e. child was diagnosed as autistic, was found out to have hearing loss, and child was diagnosed with hearing loss and later diagnosed as autistic as well).

Children with allergies tend to be more congested, and that can create temporary or fluctuating conductive hearing losses of up to 40 dB. Since that's the level of normal conversation, that can be quite significant, especially at the age where they are developing language.

So, it could be any number of things, but a hearing screening can't hurt. They can start with the basic 25 dB test at the pediatricians office (you have to make SURE the kid isn't watching or smart enough to figure out the nurses patterns and "game" the test) and if anything wonky shows up there, follow up with an ENT.

yes hearing impairment can mimick autism. I am a speech language pathologist who works with children with developmental delays and autism. We once had a child get diagnosed with autism. They later found out that he had severe hearing impairment, once he got hearing aids the "autistic" behaviors ceased.

It can….& it works the other way around as well.

My youngest son is severely & profoundly Autistic, yet we thought he couldn't hear for the first three years of his life.

Only doctors who specialize in either hearing problems or in developmental disabilities can make the call on which it is, though.

Ah, ok–the first red flag is the allergies. My little sister has a fatal peanut allergy, and I have worked at several summer camps with children with allergies and other disabilities. this child absolutely does not have autism, nor does he have a hearing impairment. Allergies can greatly affect a child's behavior; he or she becomes frustrated and confused with his or her own body, perceiving it as a threat to itself which, in essence, it is. this is incredibly difficult for any young child to understand. They also are victim to a lot of teasing from other children who do not understand the health issues that the child faces.

My best advice would be to encourage the mother to talk to the child's physician or to take the child to see a therapist. a certified child therapist will be able to help the boy deal with his allergies and understand his body and the emotions he feels.

No. There are many more symptoms of autism and simply having a loss of hearing does not mock those of autism. Autism is more of a social and cognitive issue. Children with autism tend to not make eye contact, play alone, avoid other children, abnormal play, repetative behavior…etc…simply having a hearing loss without other symptoms in my opinion does not comply with an autism diagnosis.

The Autism Spectrum is so broad that many things can mock autism and vice-versa…. if there are concerns/ yellow flags then it is best to test them as soon as possible.

Allergies mock Autism for sure!!! especially Wheat/ Gluten and Dairy… best to check out Jenny McCarthy's Book concerning her son and Gluten/Dairy allergies and how when she controlled her sons diet Autism symptoms lessened.

I'm with you… it could be hearing problems. I was always told that eye contact is the most important. and also if he is wanting attention then that is a good sign he isn't. I worked at a daycare and we were not allowed to point out problems like this to parents.
Glue ear may lead to Auditory Processing Difficulties, which contributes to reading and spelling problems in Dyslexia. Auditory Stimulation rectifies this.

Two of the common symptoms of dyslexia are reading and spelling problems – both made worse by ‘glue ear’ or ‘conductive hearing loss’. this may occur in a child who suffered from frequent colds and throat infections in the first five years of his life. this in turn may lead to Auditory Processing Difficulties, in which the developing brain does not make the links between the sounds it hears. Auditory Stimulation can rectify this; by ‘training’ the ear to be sensitive to the frequencies in which letter sounds appear, while limiting background noises that distract the child.

‘Glue ear’ contributes to a delay in phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear that words are made up of smaller sounds and syllables, like ‘c-a-t’ or ‘in-ter-est-ing’. if a child cannot hear clearly, it will be unable to hear the difference between words like ‘pin’ and ‘thin’, or ‘fan’ and ‘van’. this delay in phonemic awareness may cause lifelong difficulties, diagnosed as ‘dyslexia’, if it is not corrected at a very early stage.

The most common treatment for ‘glue ear’ is the insertion of a tiny tube or grommet into the child’s ear. It allows the fluid to drain off so that the child’s hearing is restored. another treatment is the removal of the tonsils, which are sometimes the cause of repeated middle ear infections, contributing to ‘glue ear’.

Although the resulting delay in phonemic awareness is still present, this may contributes to further Auditory Processing Problems/Difficulties that usually are not picked up until the child goes to school and fails to learn and progress in reading and writing. It is best to take the child for professional assessment by a Language and Speech Therapist for Auditory Processing Disorder.

Due to ‘glue ear’ or the reoccurring middle-ear infections the child’s sensitivity to hear certain frequencies of sound is reduced. this results that the child hears sounds incorrectly because the frequencies in which speech sounds are heard are usually mostly affected.

Auditory stimulation can be very useful in this situation. It stimulates/trains the ear to hear the sounds correctly, which it heard incorrectly before. An example of such stimulation, also known as ‘Sound Therapy,’ is the auditory stimulation program called JIAS. It was developed by Dr. Kjeld Johansen, of the Baltic Dyslexic Institute. The child listens to an individualized music CD for 10 minutes a day, for six days a week. Every eight to twelve weeks the child is re-assessed, by using an audiometer, to determine the child’s sensitivity to different frequencies. After each assessment, a new individualized CD is produced, to which the child listens to for the following 8-12 weeks. this procedure is very affordable for parents.

Dyslexia characteristics such as difficulties with spelling, are due to phonological processing problems/difficulties. this is the matching of letters to the sounds they make; both on their own and in pairs or groups. as we’ve seen, ‘glue ear’ contributes to phonemic awareness problems, worsening phonological processing problems.

Observing spelling errors in short, simple words is a way in which most dyslexic children first come to the teacher’s attention. Examples of such words, which cause particular difficulty are: ‘any many, island, said, they, because, enough’ and ‘friend’.

Other words that may be spelled incorrectly are the words that are not spelled in the way that you would expect them to be spelled, if our English spelling system were rational or sensible (phonic). Examples are ‘does’ as ‘dus’ ‘please’ as ‘pleeze’, ‘knock’ as ‘nock’, ‘search’ as ‘serch’, ‘journey’ as ‘jerney’ and ‘blue’ as ‘bloo’.

Dyslexic children also experience difficulties with ‘jumbled spelling’. These are words in which all the correct letters are present, but they are written in the wrong order. Examples includes the following words: ‘deos/does’, ‘freind/friend’, ‘siad/said’ ‘bule/blue’ ‘becuase/because’ and ‘wores/worse’.

Problems with ‘jumbled spellings’ show that a child is experiencing difficulty with visual memory. during visual memory, our brain creates a memory of things we have seen. The child with phonemic awareness problems due to ‘glue ear’ may then try to remember the shape and ‘picture’ of a word. but the visual memory of a dyslexic child may not be adequate for this task.

This problem of insufficient visual memory and phonemic awareness can make reading difficult. These phonemic awareness problems may also make other dyslexic problems such as difficulty with visual tracking, writing letters or numbers backwards, confusion over left and right (laterality), sequencing problems, difficulties copying words, word order and following two- or three-step instruction during spelling instructions, worse.

Doing an phonics program after the auditory stimulation can improve overall phonemic awareness, which in turn can help improve other dyslexic characteristics also.

A European research team headed by Professor Paul Saftig from Christian-Albrechts-Universit?t zu Kiel (CAU) has developed a form of therapy as part of the Alpha-Man project, which will receive around six million euros from the European Union for its next stage of trials. this will enable the first clinical trials to be conducted on people.

Alpha-mannosidosis is a dangerous hereditary disease which is caused by an enzyme deficiency. this in turn leads sugar to build up in cells, impairing the cell function. “Children who are affected by this disease often appear normal at birth, but their condition worsens increasingly over time. until now there was no possibility of stopping this development”, explains project manager Paul Saftig. “The therapy being developed in our project can drastically increase life expectancy and quality of life.”

The Alpha-Man project is building on two earlier project phases in which research was conducted over a period of roughly ten years, initially at the molecule level and most recently with studies on mice. It was possible to develop the enzyme Lamazym as a therapeutic agent in the course of these projects. “Our approach is to introduce the new agent into the patient’s bloodstream, from where it is absorbed by the cells and can replace the missing enzyme. until now, this method of treatment has shown itself to be the most successful”, says Kiel co-coordinator Dr Judith Blanz.

The clinical trials on patients with Alpha-mannosidosis are to prove how safe and efficient this method is. as soon as the three-year test phase is over, the researchers hope to be able to make the treatment accessible to all those affected by the disease. At the same time, it may be possible to obtain fundamental knowledge of other neurodegenerative diseases, i.e. slowly progressive diseases of the nervous system, in the event of success.

Background information:

The forerunner of the Alpha-Man project was the “Euroman” project, which ran from 2001 to 2004 and received 1.6 million euros in support from the European Union. the project was a systematic and multi-discipline approach to research and therapy of the hereditary lysosomal storage disorder Alpha-mannosidosis. this was followed by the Hue-Man project from 2006 to 2009 (Towards the development of an effective enzyme replacement therapy for human Alpha-mannosidosis), which was provided with a total of 3.2 million euros.

The project is a cooperation of organisations from Germany, Denmark, Belgium, England, France, Norway and Poland.
