It can be somewhat discouraging to investors when a home remedy of lemon juice, honey, or spinach takes on drugs created by the likes of Merck (NYSE:MRK) and Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY), and the home remedy actually holds its own in the fight. Fortunately AtheroNova Inc. (OTC:AHRO) is in a position to redeem the pharmaceutical industry. The battleground is the war against cholesterol, or more specifically, the negative health effects of too much so-called bad cholesterol (LDL). Merck unveiled Zocor to treat the condition, and Bristol-Myers Squibb launched Pravachol; there are about thirteen major anti-cholesterol dugs out there right now. As time passes though, the pros of these treatments – mostly statins – are starting to diminish, while the ‘cons’ are starting to swell. It’s a trend that the likes of Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb should be worried about, since $40 billion worth of annual anti-cholesterol drug sales are at stake. It’s a trend AtheroNova Inc. is reveling in though, as it’s not missing the boat its bigger pharma brothers missed. As it turns out, lowering your cholesterol doesn’t necessarily decrease your odds of heart attack or cardiovascular health risks… once the root cause of those risks sets in. that root cause is plaque-covered arteries. Pravachol, Zocor, and all of their statin peers have been shown to remove cholesterol from the blood, but they generally don’t undo atherosclerosis – the covering of artery walls with hard, fatty deposits – unless dosed in dangerously-high quantities. AtheroNova’s lead drug candidate is an actual treatment for the dangerous condition. The AHRO biotechnology is founded on bile salts rather than on a statin molecule designed to inhibit HMG-CoA reductase. Statins crimp the amount of enzyme that ultimately leads to the creation of mevalonate – the molecule created right before ‘cholesterol’ is formed in the liver. The problem is, by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, the drug’s mechanism has also been observed to cause other problems, including the inhibited production of so-called ‘good cholesterol (HDL). Bile salts occur naturally in the body, in that they’re reduced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, for the purpose of digesting some fats and to prevent certain toxins from being stored in the body’s fat. in many ways, bile salts are a body’s garbage men. It’s not exactly a new idea for the health-savvy. Bile salts have been used as OTC health supplements to treat psoriasis, septicemia, and constipation just to name a few. and, people at heart disease risk who are also health supplement consumers are no stranger to putting heart-related ailments on the list of targets. everything from fish oil also vera gel to garlic to lemon juice have been used with the intent of eating away at arterial plaque. AtheroNova Inc. is taking a similar ‘organic’ approach, but building its drug directly based on the mechanism that the body itself uses to fight artery plaque as best it can. That’s where Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merck, and others fall short. It’s still a long road to pave for AHRO owners, but that’s biotech. any milestones met in the meantime as the drug makes its way through the development gauntlet are likely to be rewarded.

A lot of people ask me whether stress can cause heart disease or whether anger can cause a heart attack. People who are under stress cannot sleep well and cannot exercise because the body is tired. some people resort to smoking to relieve stress, others eat a lot of food to overcome bad moods.

People who are stressed become weaker due to the lack of exercise and too much food, which can cause high blood pressure, as well as high blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Smoking makes it even more likely for the person to have narrowed arteries.

However, if a stressed person deals with stress by exercising rather than smoking and/or bingeing, the chances of developing heart disease isn’t much higher than a non-stressed person. It only matters that you know when you are stressed.

As for anger, it can cause a heart attack because anger raises you blood pressure instantly, especially in emotionally unstable people. the heart will beat faster and blood pressure will go through the roof when you are really angry. You can see that angry people are red-faced. have someone take a photo of you when you are angry and you will see that you look like you are about to eat someone alive. Older people with heart problems should avoid getting angry. Buddhist meditation is a really good practice to control your anger.

When anger rises, adrenaline is released, making the heart beat faster, the blood pressure rise and the coronary arteries contract.

A study was done in fully fed cats who were later angered. It was found that food lingered in their stomachs for three to six hours longer. This means anger can cause indigestion.

Anger makes the heart unclear. It happens when the person encounters something unpleasant. if the emotion cannot be controlled, anger rises. It can eventually lead to a heart attack. Once anger visits and the person holds on to it (without knowing), it eats the heart up with negative thoughts and bad wishes for the other person, such as hoping for failure and illness to befall the person. Vengeance can also cause stress, which in turn causes narrowing of the arteries _ and you are another step closer to death.

There are many ways to get over anger, but we neglect to consider them because most of the times we don’t even know we are angry. To name a few ways, you can realise the negative effects of anger, have mercy on the person you are angry with, and think that it was a result of something you’ve done to the person in the past. do not respond to anger with anger because it will be your loss.

A patient of mine in his early 50s had chronic high blood pressure. He was rather plump as he didn’t like to exercise. His blood sugar level had also been high for years, but he never had any treatment before he came to see me about a stabbing pain in the right side of his chest, which he often felt after he fought with his wife, and the pain would last five to 10 minutes.

Later, he found out it was because of his anger, because whenever he felt angry, he would feel pain in his chest. He solved the problem by walking away from his wife as soon as it started.

I recommended a contrast agent injection to ascertain if his coronary artery could be treated with balloon angioplasty, but he did not want this, so I gave him some medication to help with the problem. His symptoms persisted (did his wife follow him when he walked away?), so he had be admitted to hospital. He still refused a contrast agent injection. He told me that he had hearing problems. if he walked away far enough, he wouldn’t hear his wife, and his anger would fade away! Good to know he realised his own anger.

One day, he was taken to hospital in the middle of the night due to acute myocardial infarction, a heart attack and protracted chest pain. He said it happened after a fight with his wife _ yet again! _ but when he tried to walk away, she followed him. He got so angry that he was shaking, his face turned red (according to his children) and suddenly he was caught by a pain in his chest, and his pills couldn’t help.

That time, he spent more days in the hospital because of acute myocardial infarction and he also had heart failure. His heart was working at only 30% and he needed to depend on urine medication and blood pressure medication for days.

A Doppler colour test did not found any clogging in the heart muscles’ arteries. I assumed that when he got angry, the blood vessels contracted so much that blood did not reach his heart muscles, causing myocardial infarction.

His hearing problem also worsened before he returned home. It could have been a side effect of the treatment. I asked him to see an ear specialist, but he refused.

After that, he did not have any chest pain, but his hearing problem grew worse. I had to yell into his ear to make him understand what I said. Every time he came to see me, I ended up with a sore throat! however, I noticed that he was much calmer. His children also said that he no longer fought with his wife. When I asked (at the top of my voice) what his secret was, he shouted back, “It’s easy! My hearing is so bad I can’t hear my wife nag anymore!”

Hypertension, or ‘high blood pressure,’ is the leading cause of stroke, and also increases the risk of having a heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease, and other life-threatening diseases. in Iowa, nearly three of every ten Iowans (28 percent) have high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is often called the ‘silent killer’ because unlike a toothache or backache, high blood pressure may not produce any symptoms. if blood pressure rises and stays high over time, it can damage the body in many ways. “To know if your blood pressure is high, you first need to know what’s considered normal,” said Terry Meek of the IDPH Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention program. “120 over 80 is considered normal and healthy. a blood pressure level of 140 over 90 or higher is considered high blood pressure.”

However, there are things you can do to keep your blood pressure at a healthy level: Quit smoking.
Most Iowans consume too much salt each day, often more than twice the recommended limit for most adults. most of the sodium we eat comes from packaged, processed, store-bought and restaurant foods. It becomes so severe you are double and bent over with pain. you will also be very sick and nauseated. my gallbladder was so full of stones it was ready to burst. you will also feel very tender and sore below your ribs.

I had my gallbladder out when I was 21 years old. Ugh, the attacks were horrible!!

I started noticing that whenever I ate something really greasy or spicy I would get this horrible pain under the right side of my ribcage. It didn't happen immediately, but about 2 to 12 hours later. It would last for a day, and nothing I did would make the pain lessen.

This happened the first time after I ate pizza when I was about 5 months pregnant. I got this pain, and it was so bad that I threw up. I didn't think anything about it at the time, thought the baby didn't like Pizza Hut.

The next time it happened, my son was about 18 months old. I had eaten a chicken burrito from Taco Bell. It was so bad this time (and I had just graduated from college in nursing) that I knew what it was and had my friend take me to the emergency room. I had pain under my rib cage across my entire belly, down the right side of my chest from my shoulder to the end of my rib cage, and down both sides of my back.

The doctor in the ER knew what I was having, and gave me pain medication. They did an ultrasound of my gallbladder, and, sure enough, there were the stones.

I had my gallbladder removed in 1995 and it's a wonderful life.

Gallbladder attacks can be in many varying degrees, don't think that you don't have them because you only have a little heartburn. keep track of what you ate before the attack.
Study Shows Improvement in Heart Disease Symptoms for Patients with Depression

March 8, 2011 — Collaborative care for depression — started in the hospital — improves the symptoms of heart disease as well as depression, a study shows.

In collaborative care, a non-physician care manager coordinates a patient’s care with both a primary doctor and a psychiatrist. The care manager also educates the patient about depression, treatment options, and depression’s effects on heart disease. he or she also follows up with the patient to assess how well the patient is doing and whether the patient is sticking to the prescribed treatment.

In this six-month study, published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, researchers followed 175 heart disease patients who had also been diagnosed with depression. The treatment the participants received began while they were still in the hospital, where they had been admitted for an abnormal heart rhythm, unstable angina, heart attack, or heart failure. according to the researchers, this is a critical time to intervene.

“That patients were easily identified and effective treatment begun before discharge is a crucial aspect of our study — with a minimal amount of effort, those patients most in need for treatment received effective therapy before discharge, when the likelihood for missed opportunity to apply effective treatment rises,” the researchers write.

Early Intervention Pays Off

At the six-week mark, nearly 60% of the patients in the collaborative care group reported that their symptoms of depression had dropped by half. Only a third of the patients who received standard care experienced similar improvements.

At 12 weeks, the comparison between the groups held steady, for the most part. There was a slight decline in improvement among the study group. By six months, these effects had begun to wear off and there was no significant difference in improvement between the two groups.

The study had another significant finding. while medical outcomes did not change for either group, the patients who received collaborative care reported fewer cardiac symptoms and greater adherence to a healthy diet and exercise regimen at six months after the start of the study. this finding, the researchers write, is intriguing and requires further study to understand the link between relief from depression and subsequent reduction in heart disease symptoms.

“Depressed patients may need improvement of their mental health condition before they are able to take on improvement of their cardiac health behaviors,” they write.

As the researchers acknowledge, the collaborative care model they used for this study was not very intense. Patients only received three follow-up phone calls over the course of six months. however, the fact that such a minimal intervention could have such a significant short-term impact leads them to speculate that more intense follow-through could improve outcomes dramatically.

“Future collaborative care studies in this population should include larger cohorts and longer follow-up, provide greater intensity and duration of care manager interventions and an evidence-based psychotherapy option, and may consider specific interventions for health behaviors and physical symptoms, to allow a greater chance of reducing major cardiac events and mortality in this vulnerable population,” the researchers conclude.

Andrew was astonished by what the expert told him — his lack of breath was due to a heart attack.

In fact he’d had not one, but two — with no obvious symptoms.

like most people, Andrew associated heart attacks with high drama — people suffering crushing pain and clutching their chest in agony while collapsing to the floor.

Shock: Andrew Frankish and wife Verona, who thought he was paranoid. He had two heart attacks – but with no obvious symptoms

In his surgeon’s opinion, however, he’d suffered what is known as a silent heart attack — where symptoms are vague or even non-existent.

This can be just as serious as a ‘classic’ heart attack — sometimes worse, as the damage can go undetected for many years, with worrying consequences.

There are around 124,000 heart attacks recorded in the UK each year — and experts believe thousands more go undetected.

‘It’s estimated that between 25 and 30 per cent of all heart attacks are silent,’ explains Dr ever Grech, a consultant cardiologist at the Northern General Hospital and BMI Thornbury Hospital in Sheffield.

‘with silent heart attacks, you don’t get the typical crushing chest pain. Some people may get vague symptoms such as feeling generally unwell for a few hours, accompanied by a bit of jaw ache as the pain can spread, or what they think is indigestion, but nothing like the classic symptoms.’

Yet despite the lack of symptoms the heart can still be damaged. any heart attack usually begins with a sudden blockage in one of the coronary arteries that supplies the heart muscle with blood, causing part of the muscle to die.

Once the heart is damaged and scarred from a heart attack, it can’t repair itself.

‘If any heart attack symptoms go unnoticed then it’s not unusual for someone to go on and suffer heart failure as a result,’ says Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director at the British Heart Foundation.

‘in fact, unrecognised heart attacks are often only picked up when the patient presents with symptoms of heart failure, such as breathlessness, and we track backwards to work out why.’

Andrew, from Nottinghamshire, is the managing director of a financial services company. He only realised something was wrong when everyday tasks suddenly became more arduous.

‘I found myself short of breath when I took the bins out or carried the kids upstairs at night,’ he recalls.

‘I couldn’t understand it, as I play quite a lot of football and squash so have always considered myself to be quite fit and healthy. I’ve never smoked and I am by no means a heavy drinker.

‘at first, I presumed because I was nearly 40 that everything was slowing down and it was going to be harder to keep in shape. But as the weeks went by, I felt increasingly out of sorts.’

Andrew’s GP suggested he might be suffering from a bug. But four weeks later, he felt no better. ‘It wasn’t anything that stopped me from working, but I just knew I didn’t feel right.’

Andrew only realised something was wrong when everyday tasks suddenly became more arduous

Because heart problems run in his family — his father survived a heart attack at 51 and two of his brothers have had heart issues — he asked to be referred to a specialist under his private medical care.

‘My wife Verona thought I was being paranoid and my GP was actually quite sarcastic, but I didn’t want to take any chances.’

It’s a decision that probably saved his life. Referred to a cardiologist in Sheffield in January last year, Andrew had an exercise electrocardiogram (ECG) test, where patients run on a treadmill to see how their heart copes.

‘after a few minutes I began to feel quite uncomfortable and breathless and had to stop much earlier than the average person my age — I was told I should be able to run for ten to 15 minutes. that really worried me.’

Andrew then had an angiogram — where a flexible tube is inserted to check for narrowed or blocked arteries. He was completely unprepared for the news that followed.

‘the doctor said that two out of the three major arteries in my heart were blocked. the third was also significantly narrowed.

‘I was told I’d almost certainly suffered two heart attacks. and I was heading for a third, and probably fatal, one. No one could say when I’d had the attacks, but it’s likely my arteries had been blocked for a few years.’

Despite his diagnosis, Andrew could not recall any previous occasion when he felt pain.

‘I can only think that one of the heart attacks might have happened when I was playing Wii (a computer game where players mimic real-life exercise) with the family and I thought I’d pulled a muscle in my chest from over-exertion.’

But why do some people like Andrew feel nothing when they suffer a heart attack?

Usually in a heart attack the body produces chemicals that then affect the nerves, causing symptoms such as chest pain.

In some cases the nerves aren’t stimulated, perhaps because fewer chemicals are released.

‘the problem with heart attacks is that when it comes to a patient noticing them there are various shades of grey,’ says Prof Weissberg.

‘I always ask my patients whose ECG shows they’ve had an unrecognised heart attack to really think back.

‘they can normally remember a time when they had an odd sensation but put it down to indigestion or the odd twinge.’

Occasionally, people don’t feel a heart attack because over time the heart has successfully managed to compensate for the lack of blood supply by using other coronary blood vessels.

This appears to be what happened in Andrew’s case.

‘Fortunately for him, the little capillaries around the blockage had created their own bypass around the artery. Effectively, the heart had done its own bypass,’ explains Dr Grech, who treated Andrew.

‘There are some patients, however, who have no idea they’ve suffered a heart attack until they present with symptoms such as lethargy and severe breathlessness — and we discover they are suffering heart failure following the undiagnosed heart attack.’

So who is most at risk? Diabetics, because high blood sugar levels can damage nerve endings so they are less likely to feel tell-tale chest pain, according to studies.

And Dr Grech says evidence suggests that women and those over 65 are also more at risk.

But while heart attacks are linked to heart disease, smoking and high cholesterol, for Andrew it was his genes that let him down.

‘Family history is a very important independent risk factor, regardless of how healthy you may think you are,’ explains Dr Grech.

‘Patients like Andrew who have a parent or other first-degree relatives with premature coronary disease (less than 55 years) will have to be extremely careful.’

Andrew also believes his weight didn’t help. at 6ft 3in and 17st, he needs to lose about 3st to be considered a healthy weight.

‘I know I am overweight, but I didn’t think I was heading for a coronary at 37,’ he says.

‘I’m sure there are lots of men like me who think they’re “not that bad” — hopefully my experience will make them think about their health.’

Fortunately — and unusually — Andrew has not suffered any severe long-term damage. He was lucky his blocked arteries could be opened up using stents (small metal tubes) rather than undergoing major heart surgery.

Like all patients with stents, he now takes blood-thinning drugs to prevent clots from forming around them.

‘I feel great now,’ says Andrew. ‘I can run around the garden with my three-year-old son and six-year-old daughter and have a lot more energy. I feel very lucky that my problems were caught.’

Although silent heart attacks often have no symptoms, doctors have identified some signs that can be easily overlooked but could signal something is wrong.

When most of us think about heart health and warning signs of heart trouble, we usually focus on symptoms involving the chest, not the legs. However, chronic leg pain may signal peripheral artery disease, a condition that shares a common cause with heart disease: hardening of the arteries.Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, is the primary cause of peripheral artery disease, or PAD. As we age, fatty deposits of excess cholesterol and calcium – also known as plaque – build up in the arteries. Over time, these fatty deposits accumulate, narrowing the blood vessel. Blockages develop, or the arteries stiffen, making blood flow difficult. this can happen not only to the arteries close to the heart, but also, in other locations of the body. when arteries in the leg become blocked, they cannot deliver sufficient blood and oxygen to the body’s extremities. this causes the legs to ache or feel numb.PAD increases the risk for heart attack, stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA, also known as a “mini-stroke”). if left untreated, PAD can sometimes lead to severe infection or gangrene, the deterioration of leg tissue; and possible amputation of a leg or foot.Peripheral artery disease affects 8 to 12 million people in the United States – one in 20 Americans over age 50, and one in three people over age 70.
