There are several health conditions that women need to watch out for, and one of these is cervical cancer.

In the United States, more than 12 thousand cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year. it is encouraging to note, however, that if detected early enough, cervical cancer is a disease that is highly curable, and therefore, survivable.

Cervical cancer is characterized by the development and spread of abnormal cells in the cervix, a condition that is usually triggered by the human papillomavirus (HPV).

The initial onset of the disease is rarely accompanied by recognizable signs, but as it progresses, a patient may experience any of the following symptoms: unusual vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding between periods, bleeding after menopause, and bleeding or pain during intercourse.

HPV is a common virus, and most people who have been sexually active at some point in their lives are at risk for getting the virus. HPV, however, may linger in the body quietly, and it is possible to carry the infection for years.

Aside from cervical cancer, HPV is also associated with cancers of the vulva, vagina, and penis, as well as anal and oral cancers.

Any high-risk HPV strain that may linger in the body may trigger the development of abnormal cells in the cervix. while these precancerous growths do not necessarily mean that one has cervical cancer, it is possible that these abnormal growths may eventually give way to cancer cells.

A recent study published in the new England Journal of Medicine reports that a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is safe and effective for males. Doctors have recommended the vaccine to females for more than 10 years.

The vaccine is available at Watkins Memorial Health Center. Patricia Denning, chief of staff at Watkins, said the University helped develop the vaccine from its experimental stages to commercial develoment, serving as a test site in the 1990s.

The study reports on Gardasil, one of the two HPV vaccines currently available. The study tested the application of the vaccine among men and boys against a control group and found that it is effective in preventing infection. The vaccine also proved effective in preventing the devolopment of genital warts, which is the most common symptom of the disease in men. HPV can also cause cancers of the penis, anus, head and kneck in men.

HPV is generally considered to be a greater threat to women, as it causes 12,000 cases of cervical cancer each year. Cervical cancer is particularly dangerous because it typically does not show symptoms until it is already advanced.

About 1% of sexually active men in the U.S. have genital warts at any one time.

Each year in the U.S.:

800 men get HPV-related penile cancer

1100 men get HPV-related anal cancer

5700 men get HPV-related head and neck cancers.

Vaccination of males can be an effective means of preventing the spread of the disease if they have not already been infected. For this reason, some medical professionals recommend that the vaccine be administered to individuals before become sexually active.

The Center for Diseas Control recommends vaccination as one means of preventing infection and spread of the disease, as well as the associated symptoms. Jeff Dimond, a spokesperson for the CDC, said the data in the study was available when the vaccine was licensed for use by the FDA.

“So, this was taken into consideration when we deliberated on the vaccine in 2009,” Dimond said.

Denning said it was the policy at Watkins that patients remain seated for 10-15 minutes after a vaccination in case of a fainting spell.

Watkins administers both Gardasil and Cervarix, a second vaccine that is only administered to females. Gardasil is available to males and females between the ages of nine and 26 and offers protection against four strains of HPV, including those that cause genital warts and the various types of cancer. Cervarix protects against two strains of HPV that cause cancer.

Gardasil is administered in a series of three injections over a period of six months, each of which costs $150. Denning said the cost may or may not be covered by insurance, but students are welcome to call for information or to make an appointment.

RANSON – January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and women may want to learn more about proper health practices to prevent the disease from creeping up on them as it has done to hundreds of other local women.

Cervical cancer occurs when abnormal cells in a woman’s cervix turn into cancer cells, which usually takes several years to occur. The change is primarily prompted by a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, a sexually transmitted disease.

Many times, cervical cancer doesn’t show any symptoms, or symptoms can be easily confused with the normal menstrual symptoms that women experience.

“(Cervical cancer) is easily treated if caught early,” said Dr. James Murray, a physician at WVU Maternity & Women’s Health Center in Ranson. “It’s largely detected early with Pap smears. … Pap smears are recommended for someone 21 years of age or at three years after their age of first intercourse – whichever comes first.”

According to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition website, approximately 10,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year in the U.S., and it is the second most common type of cancer found in women. Cervical cancer-related deaths continue to decline by 2 percent each year due to the increasing use of Pap tests.

Most women whose cells progress to cervical cancer have never had a Pap test or have not had a Pap test in the last three to five years.

“The need for Pap smears cannot be stressed enough,” Murray said. “The followup for abnormal cells (found in a Pap test) is a minor surgical procedure, freezing of the cervix or to simply repeat the Pap smear after the appropriate interval. … (Treatment) depends on the abnormality, the type of abnormality and the age at which the patient got the abnormality.”

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers today. If caught early, the five-year survival rate is almost 100 percent, says the NCCC website.

“It’s so readily treated if caught at an early time, and no one should die of cervical cancer,” Murray said. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

In honor of National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, the Humboldt Community Breast Health Project wants to recognize local medical providers who provide free pap tests to income-eligible women.

Pap tests are used to screen for changes to the cells of the cervix caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. most people with HPV do not develop symptoms or health problems. But, sometimes certain types of HPV can cause cervical cancer. If detected early, cervical cancer is nearly 100 percent curable. This is why women should have routine pap tests at the age of 21. a vaccine for HPV is available and recommended for women ages 9 through 26.

Women whose incomes are at or below 200 percent of the Federal poverty level can receive free cervical cancer screening through programs known as Family PACT (FPACT) and Cancer Detection Program: Every Woman Counts (CDP:EWC). the local medical providers who participate in these programs are listed below. Jaime Winstone catches her breath and pauses to sip a glass of water. She has taken a break from her latest acting project in London to explain how her close friend Paul Nicholls died from colon cancer last year, aged only 27.

The experience has had a profound effect on Jaime, the actress daughter of actor Ray Winstone.

Indeed, watching Paul’s terrible suffering prompted her to move momentarily away from acting to front a BBC health documentary.

‘Paul began to feel unwell over Christmas 2009,’ says Jaime of her DJ friend of five years. ‘He’d recently gone on a health kick and changed his diet, so when he became severely constipated he thought it was his body’s reaction to that.

‘Within two weeks, his stomach swelled so much he said he looked pregnant but he thought it would sort itself out.

‘After visiting family in Glasgow, he boarded the train to London but spent the journey being violently sick. He collapsed when he got off the train at Euston and an ambulance was called,’ she says.

On New Year’s Eve, a colonoscopy revealed a 2in tumour in his bowel and cancer throughout his abdomen. Doctors broke the news to Paul that he had incurable bowel cancer. the condition is rare in those under 40, with about 85 per cent of sufferers aged 65 and over.

‘That sort of news takes a while to sink in,’ says Jaime, 25. ‘I was ignorant of the facts about cancer. I had no idea what the symptoms of colon cancer were or how it could suddenly be terminal. When you’re in your 20s you think you’re invincible. everyone thinks that cancer happens to other people and certainly not to those my age.

‘Paul deteriorated so quickly. Immediately after diagnosis he had chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which were gruelling and made him very poorly. But his cancer was aggressive and resisted the treatment. He was no longer able to fight it.’

Paul’s illness was the reason Jaime agreed to a BBC offer to front a health documentary.

‘Having seen the fabulous work the medical profession do, I find myself looking at those in my industry being paid millions of pounds for making movies and thinking, “What have you done to earn that money? You haven’t saved someone’s life.”‘

Famed for acting roles in the films Kidulthood and Donkey Punch, as well as appearing with her father in TV drama Vincent, Jaime was approached by the BBC soon after Paul’s diagnosis.

‘You feel so helpless,’ she says. ‘Suddenly you have a loved one with cancer and there’s not a thing you can do about it.

‘I couldn’t make Paul’s illness go away or ease his pain. I asked my parents what they thought about the idea of me presenting a documentary about cancer. They said I should do it and were proud of me for wanting to do something to help, as was Paul’s mum.

‘Paul was deteriorating before my eyes. Chemotherapy had debilitated him and he was unable to eat much. He was wearing children’s jeans and even they were big for him.’

The documentary tackles the link between the human papillomavirus (HPV) and rising numbers of head and neck cancer cases among young Britons, described as ‘an emerging epidemic’ by Cancer Research UK. Rates of these cancers are up by 50 per cent in men since 1989 and rising by three per cent a year in women. Oral cancers kill 1,800 a year in the UK.

Data from America published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that 70 per cent of oropharyngeal cancer cases are now caused by HPV.

‘The documentary isn’t about the same cancer that Paul died from but it’s the one that’s increasingly affecting people of my generation,’ says Jaime. ‘The most important message to get across is that we must all take responsibility for our health, regardless of how young we are.’

Paul died on August 29 last year. during the course of the film, Jaime discusses HPV and the rising number of head and neck cancers with Professor Margaret Stanley, a world leading expert on HPV from Cambridge University, and Hisham Mehanna, a head and neck consultant specialist at University Hospital, Coventry. He now sees one or two patients a week with this form of cancer. A decade ago it was just a few a year.

Prof Stanley explains that HPV lives in our skin and is so common that about 80 per cent of the sexually active population will acquire it at some point, although almost all will get rid of it. Even so, about one in ten people will not, because their immune system cannot handle it, and that is when problems occur.

Prof Stanley says: ‘These specific cancers are associated with oral sex, but we don’t want to scare people or for them to feel they are at huge risk. the key preventative measures are to limit the amount of partners with whom you have oral sex.

‘Many young people have oral sex because they deem it to be safe, hence the soaring rates of HPV-related head and neck cancers in younger people. if you smoke or drink heavily then you dramatically increase your risk of these types of cancers, too.’

Head and neck cancers associated with the HPV virus seem to respond well to treatment  -  surgery, aggressive chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.

‘They occur in very specific places  -  either on the tonsils or at the base of the tongue,’ says Prof Stanley. ‘Symptoms include difficulty swallowing and hoarseness, but are unlikely to be accompanied by a temperature or fever as they would if you were suffering from tonsillitis or a throat infection. if you have persistent symptoms for two weeks you must see your GP.’

Vaguely aware of HPV through having cervical smear tests, Jaime admits she thought it was a virus only girls could catch and that led to cervical cancer. HPV is recognised as the cause of cervical cancer in women, so two years ago the Government introduced a national vaccination programme for teenage girls.

Now, however, there is a growing argument for boys to be included in the vaccination programme because of the links between the spread of HPV and head and neck cancers.

As part of her investigation, Jaime speaks with various teenage girls about their reluctance to have the free vaccine.

‘I don’t understand why some girls aren’t having the vaccination. They don’t understand that it can prevent cervical and also oral cancer.’

According to Dr Lesley Walker of Cancer Research UK, vaccination against HPV should reduce the level of infection.

‘Evidence suggests that people are more likely to have an HPV-linked cancer if they have had multiple partners, whether they are men or women,’ says Walker.

‘From what I’ve learnt during filming, I strongly believe the vaccine needs to be made available to both sexes,’ says Jaime.

‘It can be bought privately but how many people have ?400 to spend on a jab?’

Has she had the vaccine? ‘Of course. I’m a young woman and I like to have fun. But as a result of Paul’s death and the documentary I’ve made, I know the risks of my behaviour and how to educate and protect not just myself but my generation.

‘If the documentary leads to just one person taking responsibility for their health then it will have been worth it.’

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 29, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Gen-Probe Incorporated (Nasdaq: GPRO) announced today that the Company has submitted a Premarket Approval Application (PMA) to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its APTIMA® HPV (human papillomavirus) assay, a new molecular test that detects high-risk HPV infections that are associated with cervical cancer and precancerous lesions.

“Developing and testing our APTIMA HPV assay was our largest and most complex R&D program for a new diagnostic test, so we are very pleased to have filed for regulatory approval ahead of our year-end goal,” said Carl Hull, Gen-Probe’s president and chief executive officer. “We believe our assay, if approved by the FDA, could contribute significantly to women’s health by reducing the number of ‘false positive’ HPV test results that lead to unnecessary and expensive medical procedures. from a business perspective, this regulatory submission represents the last of five we have completed in the United States this year. When approved, we expect these new products to start an important new sales growth cycle for the Company.”

Gen-Probe’s pivotal study, known as the CLEAR (CLinical Evaluation of APTIMA HPV RNA) trial, involved more than 13,000 women undergoing routine Pap testing at 19 U.S. clinics. the trial included two arms to validate clinical utility, consistent with consensus HPV testing guidelines recommended by leading U.S. medical organizations. One arm enrolled women whose Pap results were classified as atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US), meaning they were neither normal nor clearly indicative of changes associated with progression to cervical cancer. In these cases, HPV testing can help determine appropriate patient management. the other arm enrolled women over age 30 whose Pap results were normal. This arm assessed the ability of the APTIMA HPV test to identify women who were at greater risk for cervical cancer.

Gen-Probe is seeking regulatory approval to run the APTIMA HPV assay on the Company’s fully automated, high-throughput TIGRIS® instrument system. Approximately 200 TIGRIS systems are being used today by U.S. clinical laboratories to test for Chlamydia and gonorrhea, two common bacterial sexually transmitted diseases.

About the APTIMA HPV Assay

The APTIMA HPV assay is an amplified nucleic acid test that detects 14 high-risk HPV types that are associated with cervical cancer. More specifically, the assay detects messenger RNA (mRNA) from two viral oncogenes, E6 and E7, which are more prevalent in the severe cervical lesions likely to progress to cervical cancer. Gen-Probe believes targeting E6/E7 mRNAs may more accurately identify women at higher risk of having, or developing, cervical cancer than competing assays that target HPV DNA.

Previous studies of the APTIMA HPV assay from outside the United States have been published in peer-reviewed journals including the International Journal of Cancer and the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer. These studies have shown that the APTIMA HPV assay is highly sensitive for the detection of cervical cancer and precancerous lesions, while generating fewer “false positive” results for cervical disease than DNA-based HPV tests.

The CLEAR trial is the first large study of the APTIMA HPV assay in a US patient population. Gen-Probe intends to present the results of the trial at a future medical meeting.

About HPV and Cervical Cancer

HPV is a group of viruses with more than 100 types, 14 of which are high risk for the development of cervical cancer. most women will be infected with HPV at some point, but the majority of these infections are transient and resolve without clinical symptoms or consequences. However, a small number of HPV infections persist and result in disease ranging from minor dysplasia to cervical cancer. Since most HPV infections do not result in cancer, more specific tests are needed to identify women at greater risk of developing that disease.

The most common test used for cervical cancer screening in the United States is the Pap test. Pap screening has dramatically reduced the number of deaths from cervical cancer. Even so, the American Cancer Society estimates that there will be more than 12,000 new cases of invasive cervical cancer in 2010, and more than 4,000 deaths from the disease.

Despite the success of Pap testing in reducing cervical cancer mortality, it does have limitations. One such limitation is poor sensitivity for detecting cervical disease from individual Pap smears, which means the test misses cancers or precancerous changes. As a result, regular and repeated Pap testing is required to effectively detect a high proportion of cervical cancers. Another limitation is that approximately 2 million of the 50 million Pap tests performed annually in the United States have equivocal results, which are known as ASC-US. These women are often subjected to additional invasive tests, including biopsies, most of which prove negative for cervical disease.
