WACO, Texas, July 27 (UPI) — the greater the severity of a child’s attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms, the more negative the child’s quality of life, U.S. researchers say.

Dr. Christine Limbers, assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University, says the study compared children with ADHD in different types of treatment settings.

The researchers surveyed nearly 200 families and evaluated health-related quality of life and family functioning, such as physical, emotional, social and family relationships, from both the perspective of children with physician-diagnosed ADHD and their parents.

Researchers then compared those results to a sample of healthy children and to children with ADHD being seen in a psychiatric clinic.

The study, published in the Journal of Attention Disorders, found that children with ADHD treated by a pediatrician had better overall health-related quality of life and family functioning than children with ADHD being treated in a psychiatric clinic.

“These findings have potential implications for the healthcare needs of children with ADHD,” Limbers says in a statement.

“The finding that overall agreement between children and parent ratings of the child’s quality of life was low underscores the importance of evaluating both children’s and parents’ perspectives regarding quality of life in routine assessment in clinical practice and clinical trials for children with ADHD since their different perspectives potentially provide unique information.”

Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a very serious disease that has been diagnosed more frequently each year, it seems. ADHD Symptoms in Children is extremely frustrating for parents because it can often be difficult for a parent to accurately assess. Of course only a specialist can make the best diagnosis. However, the fact is that there is a wide range of symptoms that can become manifest in a child. Often times the key is to keep an eye on the overall situation as it concerns your child and possible ADHD. There are many things that can contribute to this disorder, and there are of course treatment regimens that can be prescribed. so in this article, we would like to talk more about ADHD symptoms in children, and offer you several symptoms that can be seen. but do realize there are more symptoms that exist.

There are quite a few forms of behavior you should focus on if you suspect your child may have ADHD. also, there are particular qualities to different behaviors, as well, that are important to be aware of. an ADHD child will show pervasive and highly consistent inability to focus and pay attention to things. you may see your child bouncing from one thing to the next. That behavior may have a hyperactive quality to it and may also remind you of something bordering on compulsion. What is also very important is that if you observe this kind of behavior for at least about six months. if you do, then it’s probably best to talk to your doctor.

All children, once again, forget things. this is such an amazing type of symptom for obvious reasons. we all forget things on occasion. That happens to everyone and even institutional settings because we have all read about it.

So, of course, the ADHD child will forget things in much more frequency than what seems normal. you, as a parent, have a pretty good handle on what is normal more or less. you know when something like forgetting or being forgetful is happening far too much and seems to have been going on for too long. It’s just that normal children, without ADHD, will not forget as much as the ADHD child forgets. if you see this happening in your child, then the second question needs to address how long the forgetting has been going on.

Another ADHD symptom in children is the avoidance of mental effort for a greater than usual period of time. Yes, very many children would prefer playing video games or other forms of electronic distraction. we all know as well that homework has been the bane of children, and teens, since homework was invented. but still, most children do their schoolwork and are able to sustain the required effort to do so. so that is often seen in the ADHD child; the direct dislike or strong repulsion to most or all activities or tasks that do require mental effort for some greater length of time. Quite often it is seen with something like school work, or work related to school, etc.

One particular criterion for lending credence to possible ADHD conditions has to do with the amount of time certain behaviors have been observed. The typical time frame often given is about six or so months of sustained behavior that is suspect. if that is the situation with your children, then of course the next course of action is to begin the professional evaluation and assessment stage. The only place to reliably have that done is with your doctors help, and your doctor may decide to refer your child to a specialist for more accurate diagnosis.this information was brought to you by freezerpaper.org, your source for all things related on FREEZER PAPER.

Rabies is a disease, which man acquires from vertebrate animals. The disease is caused by a virus infecting the nervous tissue. Rabies causes 100% mortality if the human beings bitten by rabid animal and are not adequately vaccinated. Rabies is a disease of antiquity, having been known to mankind probably earlier than 2000 BC. Clinically, in both animals and man, rabiescan manifest either in the form of hyperactivity (furious rabies) or paralysis (paralytic or dumb rabies). Human beings if not given prophylactic vaccination after animal bite always develop furious type rabies, whereas around 25% of dogs develop furious type rabies. Excessive salivation and lacrimation may also be present in affected animals and human beings. Hydrophobia (fear from water) may also be present in majority of the cases. no drugs work after the development of symptoms of rabies and patients lapse into coma and die.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common reasons children are referred for mental health services. it affects as many as one in every 20 children. Although boys are three to four times more likely than girls to experience ADHD, the disorder affects both genders.

There are three main types of ADHD. one type is characterized by inattentiveness, one type is characterized by hyperactive or impulsive behavior, and the third type is combined — when children exhibit signs of both types. Symptoms are often unnoticed until a child enters school.

To be diagnosed with ADHD, a child must show symptoms in at least two settings, such as home and school, and the symptoms must interfere with the child’s ability to function at home or school for at least six months. Specialists have agreed that at least six symptoms from the following lists must be present for an accurate diagnosis, and symptoms must begin by age 7.

n Signs of inattentive behavior: has difficulty following instructions; has difficulty focusing on tasks; loses things at school and at home; forgets things often; becomes easily distracted or has difficulty listening; lacks attention to detail, makes careless mistakes or is disorganized; fails to complete homework or tasks.

The presence of some symptoms, however, does not confirm a diagnosis of ADHD. just because a child has a lot of energy or difficulty paying attention in school does not mean the child has ADHD. An accurate diagnosis relies on the presence of a range of symptoms and difficulties that prevent the child from performing at an appropriate level for his or her age and intelligence level. Teachers often first observe these issues, and their input should be considered seriously.

One of the prevailing disorders that greatly affects the mental and psychological condition of children and even adults is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, otherwise known as ADHD. The prevalence of ADHD is basically characterized in two main categories. Poor attention span is one of the characteristics which tend to cause the affected person to not pay attention to details, make unnecessary mistakes and fail to follow clear instructions. Poor listening ability, the inability to finish tasks, forgetfulness, unfocused and disorganized behavior are also hallmark symptoms. Hyperactivity or impulsivity is another symptom of a person with ADHD. this type of symptom causes a sufferer to be nervous, uncontrolled, have impulsive behavior, be irrational, talk excessively and be physically restless. can this kind of ADHD disease be reduced, if not totally eliminated, by way of ADD alternative medicine?

Many doctors as a first-line treatment immediately provide stimulant drugs as a key to reducing the symptoms of ADHD. as an alternative, have you ever considered using a natural remedy for ADHD? certain natural ADHD remedies can be as effective, and that do not have side effects.

Treating ADHD naturally is an alternative way to effectively reducing the symptoms of ADHD. according to studies, one of the factors in the occurrence of ADHD is a protein deficiency in the body. Proper intake of protein may help a person in reducing the symptoms of ADHD. as researched by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, protein helps the brain concentrate and stay focused.

Nutritionists also suggest that it is better to add omega-3 essential fatty acids to the diet. Additionally, deficiency in vital minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids produces imbalance and therefore affects body’s ability to perform well. Another study shows that no less than 30 percent of children and toddlers affected with ADHD benefit from the use of proper diet to determine food sensitivities.
BUFFALO, new York — Teen drivers with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are the new focus of safety advocates because they perform as poorly on simulated driving tests as drunk drivers. A University of Buffalo study is using such tools as onboard driving monitors to help improve their driving skills.

“Teens with ADHD are such risky drivers,” said Greg Fabiano, an associate professor at the University of Buffalo who is heading the study, in a phone interview with inside Line. “We have to do something to help them.”

One 2008 study showed that people with ADHD who were sober performed as poorly on simulated driving tests as drivers without ADHD who were legally drunk. The U.S. Department of Transportation is in the midst of a high-profile campaign against distracted driving.

Fabiano’s latest study, funded by a $2.8-million grant from the National Institutes of Health, uses an in-car device that monitors the teen’s driving behavior. It tracks top speed, as well as any instances of hard acceleration and braking. The teen drivers also sign a contract with their parents that rewards good driving behavior and penalizes poor driving.

“The teens actually like this (onboard) monitor because it demonstrates that they are obeying the contract, which often leads to more privileges,” said Fabiano.

The study won’t be completed for several more years. But families appear to like the approach, which includes retraining parents to stop screaming at teens from the backseat to control poor driving habits.

ADHD affects about 7 percent of the U.S. population. It is called one of the most common psychiatric disorders, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is distinguished by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Inside Line says: The distracted driving push even targets teens with ADHD. — Rene Wisely, Correspondent

THURSDAY, Feb. 3 (HealthDay News) — a special restrictive diet may significantly reduce symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in young children, a new study suggests.

When children between the ages of 4 and 8 were placed on a diet containing no processed foods for five weeks, ADHD symptoms diminished in 78% of them. and, when suspected trouble foods were reintroduced into the diet, two-thirds of the children experienced a relapse in symptoms.

“A strictly supervised restricted elimination diet is a valuable instrument to assess whether ADHD is induced by food,” wrote the study authors. “We think that dietary intervention should be considered in all children with ADHD, provided parents are willing to follow a diagnostic restricted elimination diet for a five-week period, and provided expert supervision is available,” they concluded.

Results of the study are published in the Feb. 5 issue of The Lancet.

ADHD is a common childhood disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Children with ADHD have trouble paying attention, focusing and can be hyperactive. Parents have long suspected that sugary foods might be a culprit in inducing symptoms, but there’s not a lot of evidence to support this theory, according to the NIMH. however, food additives and preservatives have recently been singled out as possibly having an effect on children’s behavior, though the evidence isn’t yet conclusive.

Since some children have negative physical reactions to certain foods — such as eczema, asthma and gastrointestinal problems — that affect different organ systems, it has been suggested that foods may also affect the brain in a way that results in adverse behavior, according to information in the study.

To test this theory, the researchers recruited 100 children from Belgium and the Netherlands. the children were between the ages of 4 and 8, and all had been diagnosed with ADHD. Most of the children were boys.

The children were randomly assigned to one of two groups. one group was placed on the restrictive elimination diet, and the other group served as a control group and received advice on healthy eating.

The restrictive diet began with a diet called the “few foods diet,” which includes just rice, meat, vegetables, pears and water. the researchers then complemented this diet with certain foods, such as potatoes, fruits and wheat. the restrictive diet lasted for five weeks.

During the next four weeks, kids in the restricted diet group received two food challenge diets, in which certain foods were reintroduced into the diet. the researchers selected foods that were considered both low- and high-IgG foods.

IgG is an antibody made by the immune system that some alternative medicine practitioners believe is linked to food hypersensitivities; however, IgG testing is controversial among many mainstream physicians and even some naturopaths, according to background information in the study.

Some complementary medicine practices test for IgG and recommend eliminating foods high in IgG, explained Dr. Jaswinder Ghuman, who wrote an accompanying editorial in the same issue of the journal.

Forty-one children completed the restrictive phase of the diet. Of those, 78% had a reduction in their ADHD symptoms, compared with no improvement in the controls. Nine children (22%) didn’t respond to the diet. on an ADHD symptom scale that ranges from 0 to 72 points, with a higher score indicating more severe symptoms, the average reduction was 24 points, according to the study.

Thirty children who had shown a response on the restrictive diet went on to the challenge test. Nineteen of those children had a relapse in symptoms on the challenge test. What’s more, it didn’t appear to matter if the children with challenged with a low- or high-IgG food.

“Measuring IgG levels in kids doesn’t seem helpful,” Ghuman said, but it does look as if the elimination diet may help some children.

“If parents have noticed that a child’s behavior seems to get worse with certain foods, it may be worth considering,” said Ghuman, who is an associate professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

“But, for this diet to work, you have to be very consistent with it, and you have to pay attention to nutrition. It should be done under the supervision of a primary care doctor, and if possible, a dietician,” she advised.

Ghuman said that this study doesn’t answer a number of questions, such as whether or not the elimination diet reduces symptoms long-term. and, she added, that clinical practice shouldn’t be changed based on the results of one study.

Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park, echoed Ghuman’s concerns.

“Since none of the children stayed on the diet beyond five weeks, it is hard to know if this dietary intervention offers sustained benefit,” he said, adding, “Since it is more difficult to enforce restricted diets in older children, this approach may not be suitable for the majority of older children with ADHD.”

Adesman also pointed out that this study is only applicable to children with ADHD, not to children who had ADD without the hyperactivity component.

Q. In your new book, “the ADHD Effect on Marriage,’’ you talk about how Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can make marriages more challenging. why is that?

A. the impact of untreated ADHD on marriage is very significant. there are high divorce rates, high dysfunction rates. the reason is that the symptoms add something to the marriage that you’re not aware of that tends to be negative.

Q. You say that many people have ADHD but don’t know it. What are the warning signs of adult ADHD?

A. when they talk about chronic distraction, that’s one indicator. ADHD is hereditary, so if you have a child who has it, that’s a good indicator that at least one parent probably has it. If there’s really chronic nagging and anger and frustration due to repetitive action of one spouse, that’s an indicator. Parent-child dynamics, where one person has taken over control and the other plays the role of an irresponsible child, that’s another indicator. It’s not a little bit of distraction or a little bit of nagging or a little bit of anger. It’s really chronic. It affects everything.

Q. You say that it’s common in ADHD relationships for the ADHD spouse to act one way when the relationship is building and a totally different way a year or two later.

A. What happens during infatuation is that your brain is flooded with dopamine and feels great. ADHD to some degree is a lack of dopamine, so this flooding of the brain is a completely new state for somebody with ADHD. They’re exceptionally attentive and really energetic and it’s a wonderful happy time. That’s the person the non-ADHD partner gets to know. and then the newness and the infatuation wears off and so does the dopamine, and suddenly you’re back to the more typical pattern of an ADHD person — which is a lot of distraction.

Q. What do you recommend to turn things around?

A. It’s important that people do something to help change their brain physically to address the dopamine and neurochemical issues. Medicine is a very effective way for most people to do that. But it’s not the only way — there’s exercise, fish oil, and getting enough sleep, etc.

Q. You describe the second leg of treatment as “changing behaviors and habits.’’ What do you mean by that?

A. by the time you’re an adult who has had undiagnosed ADHD your whole life, you have a whole lot of coping mechanisms that are not in your best interest. You have to change those coping strategies. An easy way to think about these habit changes is creating external structures to compensate for the fact that you don’t have a lot of internal structures.

Q. and the third?

A. To create interactions that are ADHD-sensitive, I teach them certain kinds of conversational techniques and verbal cues. If you are an ADHD person who has gotten distracted during a conversation, it’s better to say, ‘Wait a minute, I spaced out for a second, can you repeat that?’ — and have both members of the couple think that that’s a positive thing to say. the other option is to fake it, which is one of those bad coping strategies that people with ADHD use all the time.

Q. You also talk about the role of humor in an ADHD relationship.

A. You have to be able to laugh at a lot of this stuff, just to be able to keep your priorities straight. KAREN WEINTRAUB
