I want to have further tests. has anyone had a similar experience? My start to the new year was energetic, but lately I am like a wind-up toy that is almost wound down! I could take a nap at almost any time of the day with no problem.

I have thyroid disease and have known it and been on medication for it for about 9 years. The years that I was undiagnosed were so frustrating. I felt like a really bad mother because many days (which developed into years) I could not hold my head up, much less be a fun and energetic mom. When I look back I want to cry for those lost years. But, thanks to a wreck where we were rear-ended (!), a doctor felt of my neck for whiplash and discovered the swollen thyroid.

Having a doctor to palpate the thyroid, not just go by blood work numbers is KEY. I had had so many “normal” blood workups. Medication made for a slow but steady recovery, and I have enjoyed lots of good health since. It makes me sad for the thousands who are undiagnosed, though. And sad for the years I lost.

From emedicinehealth.com:

Symptoms of hypothyroidism in adults include:

Easy fatigue, exhaustion

Poor tolerance to cold temperatures

Carpal tunnel syndrome (pain at the wrists and numbness of the hands)

Poor appetite

Weight gain

Dry skin

Hair loss

Intellectual ability worsens

Deeper, hoarse voice

Puffiness around the eyes

Depression

Irregular menstrual periods or lack of menstrual periods

If you or someone you know is struggling with undiagnosed “feeling bad”, don’t give up! Keep seeking the solution. Perhaps you need a different doctor or someone to go with you who will be persistent.

Stress can contribute to the destruction of the thyroid. Learn how to manage your stress and delegate. Raising a child with special needs can be stressful!

What’s your favorite stress buster?

This kind of hair loss — which experts call alopecia areata — can also occur at the temples or at the part line. Diabetes can trigger the onset of such hair loss in some people. And it can continue to spread; in extreme cases, sufferers lose all their hair or lose hair over their entire body.More clues: Alopecia areata can also cause the eyebrows or eyelashes to fall out, which in addition to the circular pattern can distinguish it from other types of hair loss.
10 Things Your Skin says About Your Health

Seborrheic dermatitis coexists in a “chicken-and-egg” relationship with a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of a yeast that’s normally present on our scalps and skin. The yeast organism, Pityrosporum ovale, takes advantage of skin already irritated by dermatitis and inflames it still more. some experts now believe that the yeast overgrowth may occur first, setting off the inflammatory reaction of the dermatitis, but that hasn’t been proven.More clues: one way to differentiate seborrheic dermatitis from plain dry skin: when skin is dry, you’ll typically also see dry, scaly skin between the eyebrows and by the sides of the nose, says California dermatologist Raphael Darvish. Also, seborrheic dermatitis tends to be seasonal, flaring up during the winter and disappearing in the summertime. It may be triggered by stress as well.

How to find more ‘Me’ Time

What to do: See a dermatologist to make sure it’s seborrheic dermatitis. if so, “there are great prescription shampoos and creams that can correct this,” says Darvish. The most effective treatment for yeast overgrowth is ketoconazole, a newer drug that works by damaging the fungal cell wall, killing the fungus. It comes in the form of pills, creams, or shampoo under the brand name Nizoral. however, as an oral medication it has many side effects, so if you and your doctor decide on an oral treatment, an alternative antifungal, fluconazole, is preferable.to calm flare-ups as quickly as possible, Darvish recommends using a prescription steroid cream. however, long-term use of these creams can thin the skin, particularly on the face, Darvish warns, so doctors recommend using them in short-term doses known as “pulse therapy.”To prevent recurrence, it’s necessary to get the skin back in balance, and many experts recommend garlic for this purpose. You can either eat lots of fresh garlic, which might annoy those in close proximity to you, or take a garlic supplement.Red Flag no. 8: Gray HairWhat it means: Many people perceive gray hair as a red flag, worrying that it’s an indication of stress or trauma. And history abounds with stories like that of Marie Antoinette, whose hair was said to have gone snow white the night before she faced the guillotine.Experts tend to dismiss such fears and stories, explaining that how our hair goes gray or white is primarily influenced by our genetics. however, in recent years research scientists have reopened the debate. while they can’t yet prove or explain it, many researchers now believe that stress may trigger a chain reaction that interferes with how well the hair follicle transmits melanin, the pigment that colors hair.
Dear Pharmacist: I’ve felt sick for 10 years, and no one hashelped me. I read on the Internet about Candida, and I have everysymptom possible. I’ve eliminated sugar already, and after 2months, I feel better. I just found your site and hope you canteach me more about this infection. – N.H. San Francisco,Calif.

A: just amazing, 10 years and YOU had to find out what’s wrongwith yourself on the Internet? Candida is a fungus, and even thoughmost physicians dismiss this organism as harmless, I don’t. It ispart of the normal flora in the gut, but it can be dangerous forsome people. Eat the standard American garbage diet, and you willdestroy your intestinal microflora and then get yeastovergrowth.

Candida is a highly invasive micro-organism that can make youvery sick. there are about 80 potential symptoms of systemic yeastovergrowth, including athlete’s foot, yellowish-green toenailfungus, vaginal yeast infection, intolerance to perfume,iron-deficiency anemia, hypothyroidism, diarrhea/constipation, gas, cystitis, prostatitis, spots in front of eyes, joint pain, acne, headache, brain fog, memory loss, bad breath, heartburn, belching, allergies, mouth sores, hemorrhoids, painful intercourse, eczema, psoriasis, chronic fatigue, asthma, itchy/burning eyes, depression, gluten or dairy allergy, and inability to gain weight (or wasting)because the Candida is ‘eating’ everything you put into your systemso you develop malabsorption.

See how confusing this gets? Doctors may overlook or dismiss asystemic Candida infection in a person and just begin prescribingmedications for one illness after another.

There are tests, treatments and dietary changes that I willshare in future columns and Facebook posts.

Candida can spread to your organs. The fungus grows like a plantdoes, spreading “roots” that poke holes in your intestinal wall;then it invades your sinuses, lungs, skin, reproductive organs, pancreas, liver and so forth.

Some health experts believe that Candida fuels cancer growth. The problem is not so much the fungus itself, but more the toxiccompounds it produces, about 75 toxic substances.

One Candida by-product is a potent neurotoxin calledacetaldehyde. That’s the same exact substance you make when youdrink alcohol or get drunk. I believe wholeheartedly that this iswhy Candida sufferers experience so much brain fog or hangoverfeelings.

Candida is a mold, so it thrives in heat and in humidity. Thisexplains why many of you feel better in dry or cool climates.

Another surefire way to kill Candida is to eliminate sugar andstarches from your diet while taking antifungal supplements orteas. I’ll outline those in a future column.

Certain medications or lifestyle choices can cause Candidaovergrowth: birth control pills, steroids, antibiotics, chemotherapy and many blood pressure pills, alcohol and processedfood.

Did you know: Studies suggest that eating 20 tart cherries a day(or drinking the juice equivalent) can provide more arthritis andgout relief than aspirin or ibuprofen.
