So I worked very closely with a co-worker yesterday for several hours. Today she didn't come into work because she was sick, went to the doctor and it turns out she has swine flu. If I caught it from her when would I start to see symptoms? What are the initial symptoms? I know I would eventually have more obvious flu symptoms but I am wondering about some that I might overlook like a cough or something.

Your liver is the largest organ inside your body. It filters harmful substances from the blood, digests fats from food and stores the sugar that your body uses for energy. Primary liver cancer starts in the liver. Metastatic liver cancer starts somewhere else and spreads to your liver.

What are the symptoms of liver cancer?

The initial symptoms (the clinical presentations) of liver cancer are variable. in countries where liver cancer is very common, the cancer generally is discovered at a very advanced stage of disease for several reasons. for one thing, areas where there is a high frequency of liver cancer are generally developing countries where access to healthcare is limited. for another, screening examinations for patients at risk for developing liver cancer are not available in these areas. in addition, patients from these regions actually have more aggressive liver cancer disease.

How is liver cancer diagnosed?

In situations in which spread is limited to the liver, systemic chemotherapy may be used, although other treatment methods may be effective. when the tumor is localized to only a few areas of the liver, the cancer may be removed surgically.

Use of radiofrequency waves or injection of toxic substances may also be used to kill tumors. when larger areas of the liver are involved, liver-directed chemotherapy (infusing chemotherapy directly into the liver), or embolization (blockage of blood flow to parts of the liver) may be used.

Patients with such limited cancer may benefit from chemotherapy infused directly into the liver. Delivered by an implanted pump connected to the hepatic artery, this therapy takes advantage of the liver’s ability to metabolize some drugs, meaning that the tumor may be exposed to high concentrations of chemotherapy while the rest of the body is spared the side effects.

Herpes is a viral disease that produce blisterlike sores around the genital area and/or rectum. there are 2 types of herpes type 1 HSV-1 & type2 HSV-2 but most genital herpes are cause by HSV-2. HSV-2 is most often sexually transmitted. it usually causes genital infections, but it can also cause oral infections. HSV-1 usually causes oral herpes infections; however it can be transmitted to the genitals through oral sex. Herpes may occur on the abdomen, thighs, hands and other areas which can be spread by regular skin to skin contact. the initial symptoms of infection can include fever, headache and muscle aches small blisters, which erupt and eventually ulcerate. the ulcers are painful and cause burning or itching. Transmission of Syphilis occurs during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Syphilis is sometimes called the great Imitator because many of its symptoms resemble other STDs. the primary stage of syphilis is usually the appearance of a single sore, although multiple sores may develop. the sore is usually firm, round and painless. If not treated, it heals in three to six weeks, but the infection may advance to the secondary stage. the secondary stage of Syphilis features a wide variety of symptoms non-itching rash of the skin or mucous membranes, sometimes with low-grade fever, malaise, sore throat, headache, or swollen lymph glands. the long term effects of Syphilis may include lack of coordination, paralysis, numbness, gradual blindness and severe confusion. this STD is curable but is best to be treated early at the first sign of symptoms.

NGU (NonGonococcal Urethritis) is an infection of the urethra caused by pathogens (germs). Several types of germs cause NGU, the most common is Chlamydia which affects both males and females. the diagnosis of NGU is more commonly found in males mainly due to the anatomical differences. NGU (NonGonococcal Urethritis) symptoms for males are; discharge from the penis, burning or pain when urinating, itching irritation or tenderness and underwear stains. for women; discharge from the vagina, burning or pain when urinating, abdominal pain or abnormal vaginal bleeding, anal or oral infections which can rectal itching.

Venereal warts (Genital warts) are most common viral STD. it is caused by the human pailloma virus (HPV) which can be passed on during sexual contact. it mainly affects youth in their 20s however this does not mean you cannot get them later on in life. the symptoms are for Venereal/Genital warts are that it grows into moist tissues in your genital area like vulva, vagina and cervix in case of females and the shaft of the penis in males. They can appear in and around the anal area. If there is oral sexual contact between both partners these warts can appear in the mouth and throat. Cervical cancer is more prevalent in women who suffer from HPV.

Vaginitis is a term for any infection or inflammation of the vagina. the symptoms may be caused by itching, irritation or abnormal vaginal discharge. there are several kinds of vaginitis. these are the following symptoms; Candida (yeast infection) of the vagina is the most familiar form of vaginitis. Final Symptoms; Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by a single-cell parasite. it can cause vaginal itching, burning & soreness of the vagina & vulva as well as burning during urination. Many women don’t develop any symptoms.

Chlamydia is the most common bacterial STD in humans Chlamydia is usually transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Pregnant women can also transmit it to their infants during childbirth. In women, most Chlamydia infections occur with no symptoms at all. If they occur, the usual symptoms are vaginal or urethral discharge, burning with urination and urinary frequency. Similarly, men are often asymptomatic, but when they occur, symptoms for men can include urinary discharge, burning on urination, and sometimes swelling and tenderness of the scrotum

HIV can be contracted from a single sexual encounter with an infected person.the risk multiplies with sequential encounters during a long-term relationship with an infected person, and also with the number of partners if the individual is not monogamous. it is possible, yet extremely rare, to contract HIV from a human bite. Many may not manifest symptoms for many years although some people with HIV experience an influenza-like illness lasting a few weeks at the time of initial infection. Eventually, HIV overcomes the body’s immune defenses and symptoms occur that may include rapid weight loss, a dry cough, recurring fever, night sweats, extreme fatigue, swollen lymph glands, prolonged diarrhea, white spots in the mouth, pneumonia, blotches on or under the skin, memory loss and depression.
