Pet owners should be especially cautious about two other plants common in Florida: the sago palm and the zamia. Visually appealing to pets, these can cause liver damage, said David Barber, associate professor of toxicology at the University of Florida.

“Every year there are quite a number of dogs that chew on them,” Barber said. “It basically only takes one seed — they crack it and chew on it — that’s enough to cause liver failure.”

But just because these plants are toxic to pets doesn’t mean pet owners can’t have them in their yards, Barber said. “Just be aware that they could cause problems, and try to prevent pets from ingesting them,” he said.

Lisa Schroeder, office manager of the Magnolia Animal Hospital in Ocala, agreed with Barber.

“If you have a dog that goes in the backyard, plant them (potentially hazardous plants) in the front yard,” Schroeder said.

However, if a pet owner notices his or her animal has ingested a toxic plant, it’s best not to wait to contact a vet, she said.

“Even if it’s on a weekend or night, you don’t want to wait till the next day to have treatment,” Schroeder said. “Don’t wait for symptoms to show up. With treatment, some things are savable.”

The best solution of all? if you don’t know what the plant is, don’t let your pet chew on it, said DeClementi of the ASPCA. “When people are on a walk with their dogs, it may be good to avoid big clumps of green stuff if it’s not grass.”

In March ’04, I had a difficult stone to pass and required a Dr ‘s assistance. Inflammation is a normal and beneficial process that occurs when our white blood cells and other chemicals protect us from foreign invaders like viruses, bacteria or tumours. Lifestyle changes go a long way in reducing chronic inflammation:

- Avoiding pro-inflammatory foods like fried fatty foods, sugar and white grains cooked at high temperatures. Increased consumption of fish oils, grapes, turmeric powder and vitamin C help reduce inflammation, along with eating a 50% raw food diet, focusing in particular on fruit and vegetables.

- Consider limiting or eliminating your intake of grains and sugars until you optimise your blood sugar.

- Exercise is a great way to lower inflammation without the side effects.

- Quit smoking. Cigarettes increase inflammation!

- use healthy outlets for stress. High levels of stress hormones can lead to excess inflammation, so be sure to use tools like meditation, prayer and yoga for relief.

- Increase your vitamin D levels. Most people are not aware that vitamin D can have a profoundly dramatic impact on your immune inflammation responses.

Although the above are long-term solutions, herbs can be useful in the short term. Bromelain found in pineapples is a natural anti-inflammatory. Ginger is anti-inflammatory taken as a tea. Resveratrol is a potent anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory found in pomegranates, red wine and cocoa.

Inflammation may be a normal response that can be protective but, like anything in this life that becomes excessive, there is a cost. it is important to live life to the fullest, to enjoy ourselves. it is good to savour every drop provided that we leave a little for later; we must be careful not to burn ourselves out.

And some day we might even discover that inflammation was the missing link, the secret to keeping one’s cool in an existence that often seems to be perpetually inflamed by stress.

Twelve Iowa Hawkeye Football players were admitted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on Monday night.

the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported that the 12 players are suffering from a kidney ailment known as exertional rhabdomyolysis, which is a breakdown of muscle fibers that releases myoglobin into the bloodstream. this is reportedly caused by excessive exercise and can lead to kidney failure.

Iowa has released two university statements, an initial statement and a follow-up clarification statement.

"the student-athletes were admitted throughout the course of Monday evening. All of the individuals are responding well to treatment as of Tuesday morning. All are in safe and stable condition," said a University of Iowa staff physician.

 it is not clear when the athletes will be discharged from the hospital, but the statements have said it will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

“The Hawkeye football players admitted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics were all participating in NCAA allowable winter workouts. the symptoms, for which the student-athletes are being treated, are likely related to those workouts.”

Freshman linebacker Jim Poggi, junior defensive back Jordan Bernstine and freshman linebacker Shane DiBona all had Facebook statuses in the past week that addressed how difficult their football workouts had been, which the Gazette reported included 100 squats followed by sled work.

"Coach Kirk Ferentz is out of town recruiting, but he is aware of the situation and is being kept abreast of the progress being made," said Iowa's director of athletics, Gary Barta in the released statement. "Our No. 1 concern is the safety of our student-athletes, so we are pleased with the positive feedback. Our next step is to find out what happened so we can avoid this happening in the future."
