Pyelonephritis is a medical condition, in which bacterial infections of 1 or both kidneys occurs.

The bacterium called Escherichia Coli, that is usually discovered in the large intestine, resulting in approx. 90% of kidney infections among individuals living in the community, but only 50% among hospitalized individuals.

The infection commonly ascends from the person’s genital part to the bladder. Pyelonephritis may also be carried to the kidney from another body’s part through the blood. For example, a staphylococcal infection of skin may spread to the kidney through the blood. other causes that increases the risk of the Pyelonephritis include diabetes, pregnancy, and any conditions that decreases ability of the body to fight infections.

The symptoms of Pyelonephritis commonly starts abruptly with vomiting, chills, nausea, fever, and kidney’s lower part pain on either back side. Approx. 1/3 of patients with Pyelonephritis also experience lower urinary tract infection symptoms, such as painful, frequent urination. one or both kidneys can be enlarged and tender. In some cases, the abdominal muscles are tightly contracted. A patient can have intense pain, resulted from one of the ureters spasms (renal colics). A spasm can be resulted from the passing of a kidney stone or irritation from infection.

In children, Pyelonephritis’ symptoms are frequently mild and more difficult  to define. In a chronic Pyelonephritis (long-standing infection), the fever can come and go, or not occur at all and the pain can be vague. Chronic Pyelonephritis happens only in individuals with major underlying defects, such as urine backflowfrom the person’s bladder into the ureter in young children, large kidney stone that persist, or urinary tract’s obstruction.

Chronic Pyelonephritis may damage the kidney so severe that it may no longer function normally and cause kidney failure. Specific symptoms of a Pyelonephritis (kidney bacterial infection) lead a doctor to make 2 common laboratory examinations to define whether the kidney is infected: culturing urine’s specimen bacteria to define which bacteria is present and to determine whether the kidney is infected. Additional examinations should be done for individuals with intensive back aches from renal colic; males, because they are very rare progress a kidney infection; those patients whose symptoms quickly returns after treatment with antibiotics finished; and those who do not respond to antibiotics treatment within 2 days.

X-Rays and ultrasound scans should be done in such situations. such studies can show structural abnormalities, kidney stone, or other urinary obstruction causes.

Colin Sweetland, 11, is now enjoying the typical life of a fifth-grader — looking forward to when the bell rings at 3 p.m. so he can play with friends or rush home to practice his chess moves, the trombone or strum his guitar.But Colin has experienced and survived an ordeal most young children have not. now, approximately three years into recovery from surgery for ulcerative colitis, Colin began experiencing severe symptoms from the disease in 2006, when he was just 6 years old. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are digestive disorders of the intestines. The illnesses are also collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon (or large intestine), while Crohn’s disease effects all layers of the intestines and may occur in both the small intestine and colon. according to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, an estimated 1.4 million Americans summer from the IBD and approximately 30,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. But thanks to a surgery Colin underwent in December 2007, Colin is all but cured from a disease that caused anemia, severe abdominal pain and rapid weight loss, among other symptoms. Colin’s Mom, Heidi Sweetland, said that by the time Colin had his surgery, he was down to 45 pounds, suffering form frequent abdominal pain and was so anemic he had had three blood transfusions. “He was in a lot of pain,” Sweetland said, adding that it was also taking a toll on her. “To sit there and watch your child suffer with this disease and not be able to do anything is unbearable,” Sweetland. “I felt so helpless.”

The walk is on may 14. Registration begins at 4 p.m. a Derryfield Park in Manchester and walk begins at 5:30 p.m. This year marks the third year Colin and his Mom are participating in the walk, which averages between 400 and 500 participants each year. for the past few years, Colin has been an “Honored Local Hero,” during the walk. But this will mark the first year Colin will kick off the walk by giving a speech. Money raised for the walk goes toward the Foundation’s research as well summer camp programs for children with IBD. To that end, on April 12, from 5 to 9 p.m., there is a fundraiser for Colin and the walk at Patrick’s Pub and Eatery in Gilford. Sweetland said genetics may play role, but it could also be caused by bacteria or viruses. “That’s why we need money for more research” Sweetland said. The Foundation said that approximately 20 percent of people with IBD have another family members with disease. Symptoms of IBD range from mild to severe, including life-threatening symptoms.Symptoms include persistent diarrhea; abdominal pain or cramps; blood passing from the rectum; fever and weight loss; joint, skin or eye irritation; and delayed growth is children. both of the diseases, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s, are unpredictable, with some patients suffering a single attack and then going into remission for years, while others require frequent hospitalizations or surgery. Without proper treatment symptoms may worsen and cause serious complications such as abscesses, obstructions, malnutrition and anemia. Colon cancer is also more likely to develop for people suffering from long-term ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease of the whole colon.While Crohn’s is incurrable, there are medications that can alleviate inflammation and reduce symptoms.according to the Foundation, common IBD medications are corticosteroids, immunosuppressants and 5-ASA preparations, such as sulfasalazine and newer versions of the drug that have fewer side effects. Antibiotics are sometimes for Crohn’s disease affecting the colon. Ulcerative Colitis can often be cured by surgery. Sweetland, said that when Colin was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in the summer of 2006, he had been suffering from worsening symptoms for several months.”He was rushed to hospital,” Sweetland said, after his father, who is divorced from Sweetland, discovered blood in his stool. a year-and-a-half later, when Colin was eight, he underwent a colectomy. a colectomy is the surgical removal of the colon, cures ulcerative colitis.according to the Mayo Clinic, Ileoanal pouch anastomosis (more commonly called J-pouch surgery) is newest form colectomy and it allows patients to not have to have a permanent outside colostomy bag. It involves removing the large intestine (or colon) and taking a portion of the small investing and turning into a pouch to hold the body’s waste until it can eliminated normally.Sweetland said now, roughly three years after the surgery, Colin’s symptoms are all but cured. he still has to take anti-diarrhea medication, and he is more prone to infection.he also takes fiber supplements. But this nothing compared to amount of medications he had to take just after surgery. Sweetland said Colin was on some 30 different types of medication. The Surgery was done at Massachusetts General Hospital, Sweetland said, praising the doctor who did it. Colin could not eat regular food for three-and-a-half weeks after the surgery, so Sweetland said he devoted his first meal of crackers. Sweetland said while he was at hospital, before an after the surgery, he met many other children with the disease. until then, she said she and her son were not aware of too many other children with the disease. “That’s why we now do the walk, to help inform people about IBD and that effects thousands of people, including hundreds of children in the new England area. she said for both children and adults, it’s disease that no one talks about because of the type o symptoms involved, which some consider embarrassing. “It’s the silent disease nobody wants to talk about,” Sweetland said.

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that affects about one in every 500 people in the UK. it is a chronic (long-lasting) condition that causes inflammation and ulcers to develop in the lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum.

If you have ulcerative colitis you may have inflammation problems in other areas of your body, such as arthritis or red and painful skin or eyes.

Ulcerative colitis can occur at any age and affects men and women equally.

No one knows exactly what causes ulcerative colitis. it may run in the family – about one in seven people with ulcerative colitis have a close relative who also has the condition. most experts think that things in your environment, such as certain foods or an infection, are also needed to trigger it.

Will it clear up itself?
Ulcerative colitis is known as a "relapsing and remitting" condition. This means that your symptoms can disappear and then flare up again from time to time. you may have weeks or even months with few or no symptoms at all.

A recent survey of patient members of the National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease found that 55 percent of people with ulcerative colitis have flare-ups every few months, with some people having monthly or even weekly recurrences. Others have more flare-ups less often.

Symptoms
The main symptom of ulcerative colitis is frequent, watery diarrhoea that sometimes has blood and/or mucus in it. you may also have cramping abdominal during bowel movements.

Other symptoms include:

feeling like you haven't finished on the toilet
nausea
loss of appetite
weight loss
tiredness
inflammation (redness or pain) in the eyes, skin or joints.
These symptoms aren't always due to ulcerative colitis but if you have them you should visit your GP.

Complications
Having ulcerative colitis increases your risk of developing colon cancer. the risk depends on how long you have it for, and how extensive it is.

Because of this, if you have ulcerative colitis you should have regular colonoscopy's (See Tests) to check for any signs of cancer developing. If these are present you may need surgery to remove the affected area of colon. Talk to your GP or gastroenterologist (doctor who specialises in conditions that affects the digestive system) for more information about this.

Causes
Ulcerative colitis is caused by inflammation and ulcers in the lining of your large intestine and rectum. you get diarrhoea because water isn't easily absorbed by your inflamed colon. sometimes ulcerative colitis only affects the rectum – this is called proctitis. Proctitis is less severe than ulcerative colitis. you may not have diarrhoea, but will still tend to have rectal bleeding.

Diarrhea that may contain blood and mucus, pain in the abdomen when it's time to go or while going, anemia. It's not fun. the anemia would come from the blood in your stool. Symptoms of anemia would be tiredness/lack of energy, being cold, and feeling weak. If you have any of these, please see a doctor.

Many people with colon cancer experience no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. when symptoms appear, they'll likely vary, depending on the cancer's size and location in large intestine.
In early cases there may not be any symptoms.
Common symptoms are—–
* A change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool for more than a couple of weeks
* Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool
* Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain
* Abdominal pain with a bowel movement
* A feeling that your bowel doesn't empty completely
* Weakness or fatigue
* Unexplained weight loss

The truth is that sometimes colon cancer doesn’t present any symptoms. unfortunately for some people the first symptom of colon cancer doesn’t reveal itself until the disease has progressed into an advanced stage. here are some colon cancer symptoms:

Bleeding blood in the stool. this is the most commonly experienced form of cancer symptom.

Weight Loss. The pain from the tumor can cause a loss of appetite.

Abdominal Pain. Swelling and pain of the abdomen occurs when the intestine is blocked by a tumor.

Changes in Bowel Habits. if you suffer from constant diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating and/ or producing thinner stools then this might be an indication of colon cancer.

At one point in her 20s, Kimberly Tucker-Bowman thought she’d never enjoy a normal life, such as having a full-time job, getting married or traveling.

The James Island resident, 34, has ulcerative colitis, a chronic, autoimmune disease that affects the colon or large intestine. the disease, which along with Crohn’s is under the umbrella of irritable bowel disease, can cause an array of symptoms, including bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, rectal pain, the constant urge to use the bathroom and/or inability to do so, pain, fatigue, dehydration and significant weight loss.

If left untreated, the colon may be damaged, be prone to cancer and/or need to be removed.

Tucker-Bowman’s symptoms began in the spring of 2003. For eight months, she was using the bathroom 25 or more times a day and was withering away. Months of scary medical scenarios passed before she even heard about ulcerative colitis.

“I was a healthy, productive 27-year-old living her life,” recalls Tucker-Bowman, adding that the symptoms became so severe that she couldn’t work. “It took a three-week hospitalization at Duke for me to be diagnosed.”

Relief, however, didn’t come until the summer of 2004 when she began treatment at the Medical University of South Carolina with a intravenous drug called Infliximab, known by its trade name Remicade, that is used to treat several autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis. like others, Tucker-Bowman must get ongoing treatments every six to eight weeks, but she doesn’t mind.

“It (the treatment) has given me my life back. until then, I wasn’t living. I was wasting away,” she says.

In February, Tucker, who works for an event rental company, did what she once thought would never be possible. she got married and honeymooned in England.

She gives large credit to Merriman Dowdle, a physician’s assistant at MUSC’s department of gastroenterology & hepatology, for working with her on fine-tuning her treatments.

On a daily basis, Dowdle sees the toll the disease takes on patients as well as their loved ones.

“This disease affects everyone in their (the patient’s) life,” says Dowdle. “There have been divorces over it because some spouses just can’t cope with it.”

The difficulty often involves the need to use the bathroom up to 30 times a day as well as painful cramping and fatigue.

Dowdle says because it’s an “intimate disease,” often involving diarrhea, many don’t want to talk about it, and that can hinder diagnosis. But she added the problem doesn’t just lie with patients, but doctors who may not have it on their radar screen and, therefore, not order tests for it.

“The earlier the diagnosis, the better because once scarring takes place (in the intestines), the intestines don’t work as well,” says Dowdle.

While the lack of communication may be one factor in delaying diagnosis, another factor is that the disease affects everyone differently, and some may have a flare-up once and not experience problems again for months or even years, says Dowdle.

Because of the nature of the treatment, Dowdle and patients become close. she often gets invited to their weddings and baptisms.

Both she and Tucker-Bowman also are committed advocates for treating the disease.

This past year, Tucker-Bowman joined forces with the Voices of Ulcerative Colitis, a group of 1,000 patients — including former “Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek, whose mother has it — who share their experiences in their various communities in an effort to help others.

“What I try to emphasize is that there are resources out and that you can get treated,” says Tucker-Bowman.

What Causes Appendicitis, Symptoms of Appendicitis

Appendicitis results from inflammation of the appendix. (The appendix is an outpouching from the right side of the large intestine.) This often occurs because the appendix has become obstructed, or blocked. However, no one really knows why this blockage happens in the appendices of some children and not in others, so it probably cannot be prevented.

Appendicitis is one of the most common causes of emergency abdominal surgery in the United States. Appendicitis usually occurs when the appendix becomes blocked by feces, a foreign object, or rarely, a tumor.

What Causes Appendicitis?

Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes blocked, often by stool, a foreign body, or cancer. Blockage may also occur from infection, since the appendix swells in response to any infection in the body.

In most cases, a blockage inside the appendix probably starts a process in which the appendix becomes inflamed and infected. if inflammation continues without treatment, the appendix can rupture. A ruptured appendix spills bacteria-laden intestinal contents into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis, which may result in a life-threatening infection. A rupture also may cause an abscess (a pus-filled pocket of infection) to form. In a woman, the ovaries and fallopian tubes may become infected, and the resulting blockage of the fallopian tubes may cause infertility. A ruptured appendix also may allow bacteria to infect the bloodstream – a life-threatening condition called sepsis.

So, what exactly is appendicitis, and what are the symptoms a person can look for? Appendicitis is when the appendix becomes inflamed for no apparent reason. It can happen to anyone at any time, though it tends to strike more when an individual is between the ages of 10 and 30. As far as symptoms, the most signature one is pain in the abdomen. It should be noted that appendicitis pain is not like the type of pain you get from gas or indigestion. It is very excruciating and can debilitate a person. Laying on one’s side with their knees towards their chest can ease the pain a little bit, but for the most part the only way appendicitis pain can be gotten rid of is through removal of the appendix.

You may also experience other appendicitis symptoms along with the pain. they are important to pay attention to, especially in children who may not be able to communicate the pain location properly. These appendicitis symptoms include abdominal swelling, diarrhea and constipation. There may be a loss of appetite accompanied by a low grade fever. Likewise, appendicitis sufferers may experience a lack of ability to pass gas to relieve any of the other appendicitis symptoms.

* Daily diet: regularly eating a diet high in fat and cholesterol and low in dietary fiber increases your risk for gallstones

Age: people over 60 typically secrete more bile than younger folks

* Diabetes: people with diabetes usually have high triglycerides, which increases the risk of gallstones

* Gender: women are twice as likely as men to develop gallstones due to estrogen production

Treatment for gallstones includes the removal of the gallbladder and/or prescription medication. Your gallbladder is not necessary for you to live; therefore, doctors may remove it with no adverse side effects. Prescription medication may help dissolve gallstones; however, since they generally recur after being dissolved, total gallbladder removal is usually the best treatment.
