African Americans who reported in a survey that they experienced more instances of racial discrimination had significantly higher odds of suffering generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) some time during their lives, according to Jose Soto, assistant professor, psychology.

Generalized anxiety disorder has both psychological and physical symptoms that are so severe that they can significantly affect everyday tasks and job performance. People with the disorder may have chronic worrying, intrusive thoughts and difficulty concentrating. Physically, the disorder may manifest such symptoms as tension headaches, extreme fatigue and ulcers. Some of these symptoms are associated with “racial battle fatigue,” a term coined by William a. Smith, associate professor, University of Utah.

“The results of our study suggest that the notion of racial battle fatigue could be a very real phenomenon that might explain how individuals can go from the experience of racism to the experience of a serious mental health disorder,” said Soto. “While the term is certainly not trying to say that the conditions are exactly what soldiers face on a battlefield, it borrows from the idea that stress is created in chronically unsafe or hostile environments.”

The researchers, who reported their findings in the current issue of the Journal of Anxiety Disorders, examined data from the National Survey of American Life, a study of 5,899 American adults. The study collected data on, among other topics, mental health and experiences of discrimination from 3,570 African Americans (60.5 percent of the total study population), 1,438 Afro-Caribbeans (24.4 percent) and 891 non-Hispanic Whites (15.1 percent).

Of the African Americans surveyed, more than 40 percent reported they experienced some form of racial discrimination, and approximately 4.5 percent reported suffering from GAD. about 39 percent of Afro-Caribbeans reported examples of racial discrimination, but only 2.69 percent had ever developed GAD.

The experience of racial discrimination, however, was not associated with GAD for Afro-Caribbeans. Soto, who worked with Nana Dawson, graduate student in psychology and Rhonda BeLue, assistant professor, health policy and administration, suggested that because Afro-Caribbeans have a different history from African Americans, they may both define and manage racial discrimination differently.

While non-Hispanic whites had higher rates of generalized anxiety disorder than both African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans, only 7.79 percent of non-Hispanic whites reported incidents of racial discrimination. Although experiences of racial discrimination among non-Hispanic whites were not associated with the development of GAD, experiencing other forms of discrimination, such as age and gender discrimination, was associated with the disorder.

“One interesting finding from the study is that non-racial discrimination seems to be associated with the development of GAD for all three groups in the sample,” Soto said. “About 49 percent of non-Hispanic whites said they suffered other forms of discrimination.”

Soto said the connection between racism and severe anxiety underscores the negative impact that discrimination has on society.

“This is just one instance of how powerful social stressors can impact healthy functioning,” Soto said. “And I would suspect, if we could wave a wand and eliminate racism from our past and our present, we would also eliminate a lot of health disparities.”

The influenza situation in Thailand was worrisome, after 470 people fell ill and 2 died in the 1st month [January] of 2011, Disease Control Department chief said yesterday [1 Feb 2011].

Manit Theerathantikanon also urged people to see a doctor immediately if they had influenza symptoms such as high fever that won’t go away in 2 days, coughing, chest pain, and often gasping for breath.

H1N1 cases reported in northern Viet Nam—————————————-Doctor Nguyen Hong Ha, deputy director of the Hanoi-based National hospital for Tropical Diseases, claimed on [30 Jan 2011] that the number of H1N1 infectious cases in Hanoi and the northern provinces had risen.

The Infection Department at the hospital had received nearly 70 suspected cases within the last month of which 48 had tested positive. This was more worrisome, as 6 of the 48 cases were pregnant women.

Dr Nguyen Hong Ha saw a rise of the deadly disease within the last 2 weeks and attributed the spread to the prolonged cold weather.

The Ministry of Health warned people to wear face masks, exercise caution in crowded public places, such as bus stations and markets, and maintain good personal hygiene like avoiding wiping the nose with one’s hand, exercising regularly, and eating nutritious meals.

People most susceptible are pregnant women, children, and chronically ill patients. Anyone suffering from a prolonged bout of fever or cough must not take any chances, but report to the nearest hospitals or medical clinics.

[According to the newswire above, 48 confirmed influenza A (H1N1) cases were reported in Hanoi and the Northern provinces of Viet Nam in January 2011. According to WHO's influenza update, dated 28 Jan 2011, available at who.int/csr/disease/influenza/2011_01_28_GIP_surveillance/en/, several countries of southern Asia have seen increasing trends recently, mainly due to H1N1 (2009).

In Asia, Singapore and Hong Kong report crossing their epidemic threshold of respiratory disease activity with the largest fraction of samples tested being H1N1 (2009) and an increase in H1N1 (2009) positive samples is also reported from Southern China. Data from South East Asia indicate only small numbers of influenza virus detections and no increases in respiratory disease activity.

You may have a problem with your kidneys, it might not be your prostate; and regardless of what it is, I seriously doubt that excessive sex has anything to do with it, except if you were inadvertently or intentionally injured during rough or kinky sex. usually the physiological and psychological benefits of a healthy and active sex life outweight any negative things, but in your case there is of course still a possibility of a sexually transmitted disease involved and especially so if you have been engaging in any unprotected sexual relations as part of your sexual activity to date.

Women who have had chlamydia are at greater risk of an ectopic pregnancy because of a lasting effect of the infection, according to new research.

A study by Edinburgh University experts has shown for the first time of how the sexually-transmitted infection can increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy.

An ectopic pregnancy is when an embryo implants in the Fallopian tube.

Women who have had chlamydia are more likely to produce a protein in their Fallopian tubes, the study said.

Increased production of this protein, known as PROKR2, makes a pregnancy more likely to implant outside of the womb.

Sexually transmitted

The study follows on from research, also at Edinburgh University, which showed that production of a similar protein increased the likelihood of smokers having an ectopic pregnancy.

Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK. It can be treated but often goes undiagnosed because it can occur without symptoms.

The infection is known to cause infertility as it can lead to scarring and blockages in the Fallopian tube.

The research shows, however, that chlamydial infection linked to ectopic pregnancy causes "much more subtle changes" in the Fallopian tube, without evidence of severe scarring.

The study, published in the American Journal of Pathology, was funded by the Wellbeing of Women and the Medical Research Council.

Dr Andrew Horne, of Edinburgh University's centre for reproductive biology, said: "we know that chlamydia is a major risk factor for ectopic pregnancy but until now we were unsure how the infection led to implantation of a pregnancy in the Fallopian tube.

"we hope that this new information allows health care providers to give women accurate information about risks following chlamydial infection and to support public health messages about the importance of safer sex and chlamydia testing."

Twenty-year-old Ariel has been living both with anxiety and depression since the eighth grade. she says, “It got so bad where I just slept all day, I didn’t get out of bed, I didn’t do anything.”

That is in addition to attention deficit disorder. Ariel says, “I was already upset and depressed about the fact that I had ADD and had to take medications for that. When I found out I had two more things, I was like, ‘Oh my God! What’s going on?’”

Research from Harvard University shows girls with attention deficit are 19 times more likely to be depressed…and 15 times more likely to have bi-polar disorder than other girls.

Dr. Richard Winer, an Atlanta-area psychiatrist, says, “There is a very high likelihood that there will be something else besides ADHD going on, probably at least a 70 percent chance if not more.”

Why is one person so likely to have several disorders? Researchers say the conditions are genetically linked…and tend to aggravate each other.

Ariel says, “I try to do something, but I can’t because of the ADD, and it frustrates me. Then that makes me very nervous and anxious and that goes to the anxiety. and then when I get like that, I’ll go ‘Oh my god! I can’t do anything! I can’t do anything!’ and that leads to the depression.”

Experts say girls like Ariel often need one medication for ADHD and another for depression.

Dr. Winer says, “I generally will try to treat ADHD first if I think there is also mild to moderate depression alongside. If the depression appears to be extremely severe in nature, then that takes precedence over treating ADHD in terms of what do you treat first.”

Ariel often skips her medication. she says it’s a crutch, but it does work. her mom Arlene says, “She started taking some anti-depressants, and all of a sudden she was back to the way she had been six months earlier.”

Another study out of Harvard University shows boys with ADHD are also at risk for having another mental health problem, but the statistics are slightly less dramatic than they are for girls.

Many parents seem to be ignoring medical advice when it comes to treating their child’s attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). a study conducted at New York University reveals that of 500 parents whose children have ADHD, 45 percent say behavioral therapy has been recommended, but less than one-quarter (21 percent) say that their child actually participates in it. in addition, 89 percent of parents with an ADHD child say medication has been prescribed for their child to help manage symptoms, but only 55 percent report their child is taking medication.

The study also included the following findings:

• More than twice as many parents of children with ADHD (43 percent) than parents of children without ADHD (18 percent) believe their child is likely to be picked on at school.
• Nearly half (49 percent) of parents of ADHD children say their child is likely to have difficulty getting along with other neighborhood children (compared to 18 percent of parents of children without ADHD).
• Seventy-two percent of parents of ADHD children report their child has trouble getting along with siblings or other family members, compared to 53 percent of parents of children without ADHD.
• Less than half (48 percent) of parents of children with ADHD say their child adapts easily to new situations, compared to 84 percent of parents of children without ADHD.
• According to their parents, children with ADHD are half as likely to have many good friends (18 percent vs. 36 percent) and are less likely to play with a group of friends (38 percent vs. 50 percent), compared to children without ADHD.
