There are very few "early" signs of digestive cancer. you usually don't get symptoms until you have a more advanced case. That's why early screening tests are very important: endoscopy, colonoscopy, occult blood in the stool test, etc. SEE YOUR DOCTOR for these tests.

There is no such thing as "leg cancer". There are many cancers that can affect the leg–the skin of the leg, the bones, the blood vessels, and so forth. But nothing generally known as "leg cancer." Again, go see a doctor for a diagnosis.

"Christin" is right – this does sound like malaria, but if you live in the USA or most developed countries this isn't very likely.

I'm guessing you meant "fever."
Fever is not a common presenting sign for any of the many types gastrointestinal tract malignancies – nor would fever be likely with an extremity cancer such as a sarcoma (muscle, bone, cartilage) or melanoma.

"Skin and eyes yellow" sounds like jaundice – elevated bilirubin. This suggest a liver problem. Along with fever, the first thing to think of is hepatitis. There are several viral types.

Hair loss can occur with any severe body stress. we don't see hair loss with cancer unless we are treating with one or more of the chemotherapy drugs that cause this as a side effect.

I hope this person is seeing his or her primary care physician.
Once in the medical care system – appropriate consultations may be obtained.

Cancer of any kind is very low on the differential diagnosis list in this described case.

Two to seven days is a rather large window, but most people tend to see symptoms within approximately five days. some people never catch it. some people will catch the virus, but will experience no symptoms. Often times, someone won’t experience symptoms for years after exposure. the virus can be passed to another individual whenever the virus is present on the skin surface. once we are exposed to genital herpes, the virus can live in our bodies for years without us even realizing it.

I'm planning a story where a character finds out he has cirrhosis, and it's in the final stages. How long is someone typically given to live if they are in the latter stages of this disease, and what symptoms might they experience?

A patient could develop fluid in the abdominal area.
This fluid is known as Ascites. it is caused because
the liver can no longer make a protein, known as
Albumin, efficiently. The fluid can keep building
up inside the patient and cause pressure to
develop against other organs and up against
the diaphragm, making it difficult for them to breathe
and feel like eatting. The doctor can remove this
fluid by a procedure known as paracentesis.
This is where they insert a needle connected to
a tube that leads to a vacuum bottle or bag. The
vacuum inside cause the fluid to be gently pulled
from the abdomen into this bottle. it is sent to
the lab to be tested then.

A person can develop fluid in other areas of the
body, also. This fluid is known as edema.
Mostly, this is seen in the legs and the feet.
It is caused because people who have Cirrhosis
of the liver tend to hold onto too much sodium in
their bodes. Most patients are told to elevate
their legs (do not massage them). they are
placed on diuretic and a "lower" sodium diet.

The patient will start to become easily confused
and disoriented. This condition is known as
Encephalopathy. it happens because certain
toxins, like ammonia, is able to pass the blood
brain barrier and go into the brain. The liver
used to take the ammonia…which is a byproduct
of the proteins we use…and convert it into urea
for the body to dispose of. The liver cells can
no longer do this efficiently…therefore the
ammonia stays in the blood.
People who have this problem are usually
placed on medications like Lactulose.
It is important they take the medication…because
they may end up in a coma, if this isn't done.
This conditions also causes them to have
sleep pattern changes and trembling in the
hands making it difficult for them to write.

Portal hypertension: As the liver cells die
off and form scar tissue inside the liver….
this blocks the flow of blood through the liver
on its way back to the heart. with Cirrhosis,
the liver is actually dying inside the patient.
The once soft, smooth organ has turned
into a enlarged spongy one with the development
of inflammation. with cirrhosis, it starts to
shrink and become hard textured.
The blood isn't able to go through the liver
and it backs up into the portal vein and into
other smaller vessels (varies)…not used to handling
this amount of blood and they can have weak spots
that can break open and bleed. These are
usually found in the esophagus, rectal area,
and belly button area. any blood seen in the
vomit, sputum, or in the rectal area is an
emergency. The doctor can go in and "band"
these varies to stop the bleeding.
The pressure inside the portal vein is known
as Portal hypertenstion.

Patients with cirrhosis tend to bruise and bleed
very easily. The liver is no longer able to make
the clotting factors that helps the blood to clot.

Patients are also extremely tired since the
body is trying to heal and also, other organs
are trying to compensate for what the liver
no longer can do. The liver does over 500
functions to keep the body well.

The doctors are the only one to determine how long
a patient may survive once diagnosed. they usually
do a liver biopsy. they then take blood tests to
see how far advanced the disease may be.
Patient are placed on the transplant list according to
how much time the doctor decides the patient may
have left to live if they do not receive a transplant.
Once on the transplant list and the doctor observes
the blood work, they are given a MELD score.
The MELD score runs from 6 to 40. if a patient is
closer to a 6, they are the healthiest on the list and
may even be taken off the list…if they continue to
get better. As the patient goes up the ladder closer
to the 40 mark: they are sicker, have more signs
and symptoms, and are more in need of a transplant
sooner. if they reach the 40 mark: they have a very
short time to live and may die if an organ doesn't
become available for them.

No. my brother just told me that they have medicine that u can take 48 hours after contracting it. You'll know u'll have it. You wake up with some raging fever. It is one of the worst illnesses that you can get and so yes, you can die from it, not like the common cold at all. There is a vaccination, but keep in mind that it's very expensive, a shot will cost well over $1000.

Swine Flu is a virus like the common cold.
The common cold has been the longest known of illness.
A virus cannot be stopped with medicine because viruses adapt. People have been dying from the swine flu.
People travel and the virus spreads through out the world. When there is an out break of an illness like this people are terrified of catching it so when people around them get it they will leave to avoid it. therefore they could already have it and they are spreading it even more. Birds migrate. The disease can be caught from there poop. say a bird poops in a cows food and the cow eats it. now the cow has the disease. then the cow gives it to the other cows. This is dangerous because its not curable and its speading fast. and its deadly. one good thing is that when the swine flu pops up in a new location the virus seems to be weeker and less people die from it. Panic is not wise. Preparation for what lies ahead is. What can you do to protect yourself and those you care about. If you read the posts online, it becomes quite clear quite quickly that a lot of people refuse to take this seriously because statistics are on their side. That's dumb logic considering you can manipulate statistics as you please…and while only a fraction of the human populous will die from this disease…what if you are a part of that fraction…or your mother, or father, sister, brother, child, etc. one death close to home and the idea of the pandemic becomes real. until then, people ignore it. and that is why it will happen. because they will continue to travel of interact as if nothing is wrong and there is no reason to make efforts to contain. just take more steps to prevent. i live in san diego which is just above Mexico and we have like 8 confirmed cases right now and a 3-year-old is hospitalized.
according to the daily press con. they all have quite mild symtoms.
i have no idea why it's so deadly across the border but it seems like it's relatively mild here in the US and that only those with weak immune system ( babies, little kids etc) need to be hospitalized, the rest can stay home and recover

Dairy food can aggravate these allergies, so if you reduce milk/cheese around the summertime that can help. Eating local honey is supposed to help as well.

medincine's like zrytec and claritin and antihistamines help…I found that singulair although an asthsma medication helps. but here's a real tip go to a health store or look on the web for something called a chinese teapot or a neti pot this is really just a small horn shaped contraption that you fill with warm water and non iodized salt and once or twice a day you run the solution through your sinuses. it has really helped me

The first stop should be your doctor. For most allergies an injection once or twice a year will keep you sniffle and itch free.(eyes) if that doesn't work, any otc medicine that says non-drowsy will help.

You need an Antihistamine there are several over the counter. My favorite is Clar*i*t*i*n, generic name is lorata*dine. Follow the directions on the box. Benadryl is also an antihistamine but causes many people drowsiness.

Take anti-allergy medication or avoid exposure to allergens as much as possible. its best to consult your doctor.

You can try over the counter antihistamines, and if they don't work for you, see a doctor and get prescription antihistimines….

When you first come to begin planning a round-the-world trip, vaccinations can seem to be a daunting, overwhelming task. I struggled to find one single website that contained everything I could possibly need to know in one place. I’ve been researching solidly for the past three months and have combined everything I’ve learned in this post.

There are so many vaccinations available to the long-term traveler. Some of them you will need, some are optional but advised, and some of them will be free. Which ones do you need and which ones don’t you? how expensive will they be? can you have lots together or do they need to be spread out? how soon before your departure date should you start getting them?

In this post, I will attempt to answer the majority of questions you may have about vaccinations and long-term travel. If I miss anything out then please leave a question in the comments below and I will do my best to try and answer it.

Note: I do live in London, so this information regarding prices will be different if you live elsewhere, but everything else should be relevant.

What vaccinations are available to me, and what are they to prevent?

Dipheria/Tetanus/Polio.

Tetanus is a toxin that is distributed via spores. The disease can be contracted by the spores entering a wound that you may have if you are injured. Tetanus has an incubation period of 3-21 days. during this time, your muscles start to become rigid, until eventually you will not be able to open your mouth, and your spine and abdominal muscles also become rigid. Tetanus can eventually prove to be fatal.

Polio is mainly contracted through contaminated food and water. Polio has an incubation period of 7-14 days. in 90% of cases, there will be no symptoms. 8% of cases will experience mild flu-like symptoms, and the remaining 2% will experience paralysis, bladder dysfunction, impaired swallowing, breathing and speech, which could be fatal.

Diphtheria is a respiratory illness contracted by water vapour in the air and from contact with infected people. Diphtheria has an incubation period of 2.5 days. It can possibly cause death.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis a is spread via contaminated food and water, mainly from shellfish, or from person-to-person contact. Travelers which are coming from modern countries that have good hygiene are more at risk, as they will not have developed immunisation from pre-exposure.

Hepatitis a has an incubation period of 3-6 weeks. over 90% of people infected will not show any symptoms. The symptoms that are experienced by the other 10% include fever, upset stomach, rash, nausea/vomiting and diarrhea. these symptoms are following by jaundice and itching.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is spread from person to person via infected bodily fluid, such as blood/blood contact, infected medical equipment and via sexual transmission.

Symptoms can include: fever, joint pain, rash and jaundice. Hepatitis B can lead to permanent liver damage and cancer.

Japanese B Encephalitis

Japanese B Encephalitis is contracted through the bite of a mosquito. these mosquitoes are normally found in rice paddles, as well as on pigs, birds and the Siberian stork. Japanese B Encephalitis sometimes will exhibit no symptoms, although some people experience fever, encephalitis, meningitis and paralysis. Recovery is slow and long-term debility is common. There is a mortality rate of 30% in children.

Rabies

Rabies infects animals mainly, but the risk for humans occurs animal contact. Transmission occurs from a traveler being bitten by the infected animal, and the virus will then transfer through the animal’s saliva. The virus will move into the infected person’s nervous system and results in either irritable (furious rabies), or depressed (dumb rabies) symptoms. The incubation period is between 20-90 days. Spasms involving the breathing muscles, generalised convulsions and cardiac or respiratory arrest follows, usually within a week, resulting in death.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis

Tick-Borne Encephalitis is transferred to humans via the bite of an infected Tick. It can also be transmitted via milk from infected animals. Tick-Borne Encephalitis is a flu-like illness, with symptoms appearing within 7-14 days of being bitten. The symptoms can include fever, headache, nausea and photophobia, which could lead to neck stiffness, convulsions and an altered mental state. It could also lead to meningitis, encephalitis and muscular paralysis.

Typhoid

Typhoid is transmitted via contaminated food and drink. The symptoms include fever, headache, confusion, abdominal pain and constipation, as well as a rash.

Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever is spread via infected mosquitoes. The main symptoms are fever, jaundice, hemorrhage and renal fever.

What vaccinations do I need for where I am going?

Tetanus is present worldwide.

Polio is mainly found in developing countries in Asia and Africa.

Diphtheria is in most of sub-Saharan Africa, parts of South East Asia and South America.

Hepatitis A is present in all countries with poor sanitation and public hygiene.

Hepatitis B is recommended if you will be visiting South East Asia, the Middle East, South and Western Pacific, and parts of the Caribbean.

Japanese B Encephalitis can occur following the rainy season in the central delta of China, low-lying regions in Nepal, northern parts of Burma, east and southern states of India, northern Sri Lanka, northern Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Occasional outbreaks have been reported in Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, Singapore, southern parts of Thailand, southern Sri Lanka and all of India.

Rabies has a greater risk in Asia, Africa and South America.

Tick Borne Encephalitis is found in European Russia, Austria, Hungary, the Balkans, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Scandinavia. It can also be found in eastern parts of China.

Typhoid is present worldwide, however it is worse where food and water may be contaminated with sewage – Africa, far East and South America.

Yellow Fever is present in tropical Africa and South America. you may be required to show a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate to enter certain countries IF you are traveling from an infected area.

How soon should I get my vaccinations?

Hepatitis a and B - The vaccine requires two doses, 30 days apart, which will provide you with one year of protection. you can then have a booster vaccination 6 to 12 months later which will give you 20 or more years of protection. It is best to have the first shot 6 months before your departure date so you can complete the full course before leaving. If this is not possible then you can have the first two shots before you leave, and have the booster shot whilst you are on the road.

Japanese B Encephalitis – three doses on days 0, 7-14 and 28. you will be immune one month after your final dose.

Rabies – days 0, 7, 21-28. you can then have a booster every 2-3 years.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis – take two does. one at 0 days and the other 4-12 weeks before that.

Typhoid – one dose will protect you for three years, so you can get it earlier than the others.

Yellow Fever – Must be given 10 days before leaving. As this is a live vaccine it has to be given on the same day as other live vaccines (Polio), or 3 weeks apart.

I realise it can be overwhelming trying to work out what vaccinations can be taken at what time. The following is an example of how you could choose to have the vaccines administered:

I have been told that if you have left it very late before sorting out your vaccinations, it is is possible that ALL of them can be administered at once at different locations on your body – but that sounds awful, so get planning early on!

How expensive are the vaccines?

The most important thing is to shop around. Don’t settle for the first quote you are given, look at lots of different companies and try to find the best prices. I started with my doctor’s surgery and found them to be extremely expensive, and after looking around for a bit, I managed to find the same vaccinations – for half the price!! Prices obviously will vary from place to place, and this is only speaking for the UK. The following will give you some rough averages of prices I’ve found from my research.

It is possible for you to be able to obtain some vaccinations for free from the NHS in the UK, and the three main ones that are normally covered are:

Dipheria/Tetanus/PolioHepatitis ATyphoid

Depending on which borough you live in, you may be able to get even more for free – I have a friend that even managed to get the rabies vaccination for free. call your doctor’s surgery and find out what’s on offer.

Any side effects to the vaccines?

All vaccines are likely to cause redness, pain or swelling around the injection site. However, it is possible to experience other side effects which are listed below, and are quite rare:Dipheria/Tetanus/Polio – Mild headaches, aching of muscles and a mild fever. Severe reactions are rare.

Hepatitis a – Fever and a headache. Less common side effects are bruising, stiffness in the neck, sore throat, tiredness, nausea, stomach cramps and agitation.

Hepatitis B – Fatigue, headache, irritability, sore throat, tiredness, weakness.

Japanese B Encephalitis – Little adverse effects.

Rabies – Swollen glands, headache, nausea, diarrhea, muscle aches, chills.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis - Apparently it is manufactured using chicken eggs(!) so if you have an allergy to chickens you should avoid this vaccine. side effects include joint pain, nausea, tiredness, fever, vertigo, vomiting, hypersensitivity.

Typhoid - Headache, muscle or joint pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, abdominal pain and mild fever. Some individuals can develop diarrhea, and allergic reactions like, skin rash, hives, itching and swelling of the eyes or face after taking the oral typhoid vaccine.

Yellow Fever – Tiredness, muscle aches. There are more serious side effects associated with the vaccine so you will have to wait at the clinic for 30 minutes after having had the vaccine to check that you are ok, and not about to have a serious allergic reaction – anaphylaxis. also rare is encephalitis and inflammation of the liver or kidney. Complications are more likely in the over 70′s.

Malaria.

I saved the most important disease until last. Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is spread via mosquitos. When you are bitten by an infected mosquito, a parasite enters the bloodstream and travels to the liver, where they multiply before returning back into the bloodstream to attack the red blood cells. these parasites continue to multiply inside the red blood cells until they burst, releasing even more parasites into the plasma. Nice!

Malaria is present in over 100 countries of 40% of the World’s population is at risk. Large areas of Central and Southern America, Africa, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia and Oceania are considered malaria risk areas, as illustrated below:

Common symptoms of malaria consist of flu-like symptoms – The chills, headache, muscle aches and fatigue. Symptoms can also include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of red blood cells, as well as jaundice and anemia symptoms.

The symptoms normally occur between 10 days and 4 weeks after exposure being bitten by the infected mosquito, with it sometimes being as late as a year.

Any traveler that becomes ill with a fever or flu-like illness whilst traveling, and up to a year after returning from the trip should immediately seek medical attention.

There is not a vaccine available for malaria, but you can take anti-malaria tablets to prevent contraction. As well as taking the tablets you should be vigilant and try to avoid getting bitten as much as possible. you can do this by wearing insect repellent, especially at dawn and dusk where the mosquitoes are most prevalent. Wearing clothes that cover a lot of your skin will also help to prevent bites.

The tablets that you should take will differ from the country that you will be visiting. The five main tablets are called Chloroquine, Paludrine, Mefloquine, Doxycycline and Malarone.

Chloroquine – Start one week before travel and continue for 4 weeks after you return. can be taken for periods exceeding 5 years. can cause nausea and mouth ulcers.

Paludrine – Start one week before travel and continue for 4 weeks after you return. can be taken for periods exceeding 5 years.

Mefloquine – Start 2.5 weeks before travel and continue for 4 weeks after you return. can be taken for up to one year.

Doxycycline -Start 2 days before travel and continue for 4 weeks after you return. can be taken up to 6 months. can make you very prone to sunburn and it’s recommended you don’t sunbathe whilst taking these.

Malarone – Start 2 days before travel and continue for one week after your return. can be taken for up to one year.

Are the vaccines really necessary?

Obviously it’s up to you if you want to take that risk, but in my opinion, yes. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Do you really want some crazy tropical disease ruining the trip you’ve been planning for months/years?! yes, it’s true, you could not have any vaccinations, and be absolutely fine, but that’s definitely not a risk I’m willing to take, and for the sake of a few hundred ££, I’d rather be safe…

As for me…

Today I visited 1st Contact Travel Clinic in London for my first consultation about vaccinations. If you live in the London area I would definitely recommend this company. They are extremely helpful, have the lowest prices I’ve managed to find anywhere, and also don’t charge for consultations or to get vaccination certificates.

My doctor’s surgery offer Hepatitis a and Typhoid vaccinations for free on the NHS, so I will be getting those from there. The rest I will be getting from 1st Contact Travel Clinic. The ones I am getting will be:

Hepatitis BJapanese B EncephalitisRabies

I left it too late to start the Hepatitis a and B vaccine, as it is less than 6 months before I am due to leave. I can have two doses a month before and a week before, and this will give me a year’s protection. I can then get a booster shot when I am on the road to protect me for 10 years. I will get my Typhoid vaccine within the next few weeks so that it is out of the way. Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies I will take together at day 0, 7 and 28.

I have a medical card and i live in Illinois , I have had kidney cancer for 5 years . They removed my kidney and my rib to get to the kidney. I had to go to Springfield IL. to get it done. St. Johns Hospital or Memorial . They are really nice people up there. There is all kinds of Dr. who take a medical card. they are giving her the run around.

I also would suggest trying to get another opinion.. Although small cysts are normal every month when you are going through your menstral cycle. Normally they disapate when you start your period and they are not a bother to most women. I have Endometriosis and it took me over 8 years to find a Dr that took me seriously enough to even LOOK and see what was going on inside of me. After I had an ovary removed and continued to have problems. I have been through about 10 Drs over the last 12 years or so. They all thought it was IN MY HEAD. But it was NOT.. Call the 800 number on the medical card to find out what Drs take the card and sometimes it is worth it to travel. I found a Dr that was 2 hours away from me that took my Medicaid card, that believed in my pain and suffering. It was WAY worth the travel.

Tell her NOT to give up on herself, Dr hunting is as important as someone giving a job interview! They work for YOU!!! YOU are hiring them!

Call the number on the back of her card and they can tell her where the closest gyn is that accepts her card. There is someone that will see her, with a medical card she just has to do all the leg work to find them.

HOSPITALS TAKE ALL THE MEDICAL INSURANCES. JUST GO AND REQUEST FULL EXAMINATION AND TESTS

I just got my breast implant Feb 18 2010, and for a week now I have been itchy and sneezing, the weather has changed (i live in Ca) but I was never one to have bad allergies? so im concerned? van anyone give some advise?
